alligraphy is a form of visual art that is related to handwriting. Like other forms of art, such as drawing, painting, photography and sculpture, the goal of calligraphy is to create, among other things, a sense of beauty, integrity, harmony and rhythm. The main difference is that with calligraphy, this is achieved through the arrangement of letterforms.

The first printed books appeared in
Europe in the mid-1400s. Printers
originally tried to print pages similar
to the ones written by scribes, and
used typefaces that resembled the
calligraphy used at the time.
Long ago, nearly all of theholy books of many of the
world’s religions were handwritten using
calligraphy.
In Europe, calligraphy began
with writing systems created
by the Phoenicians more
than 3,000 years ago.
The Greeks adapted the
letterforms, and later
the Romans did as well.
Eventually, calligraphy
throughout Europe
evolved from the
Roman writing system.

Central School of Arts and Crafts in
London.
Hundreds of years ago,
calligraphy styles and letterforms varied
greatly from one area to another. This made it very difficult for scribes from
one area to read the calligraphy used
in another area.
The word “calligraphy” is Greek for “beautiful writing.” It was introduced to the English language in
the early 1600s.

style of calligraphy was used for personal writings
while another style was used for legal
documents.
