Coming into March we are going to
begin some NEW studies for the year.
March 31 is Easter so we will be having
some wonderful Easter services planned
that we hope you will invite your
families, neighbors and friends to. On
Sunday mornings we will also begin a
study of the Sermon on the Mount. It is
without question Jesus best sermon, and
He lays out a theology in it that He will build upon for the rest of His
ministry.
On Wednesday nights we are planning some very special get-
togethers. I am sure that the Transition Team will want to meet with the
church for some Town Hall meetings in March. Some of those will help us
to have a better understanding of what we believe. We have completed
the Book of Acts and at some point we are going to start a study on what
all other religions believe in our town and around the world.
One of the comments we heard from a number of members to the
Transition Team was “Why do we not have more activities going on
during the week so our building does not just sit empty?” WELL, the last
Wednesday in February we invited Cynthia Matthews to come share with
us about her ministry to start preschool age Learning Centers in
communities around the country. Being a military wife she has started
some around the country, but now living in West Point, she had started
two Learning Centers in New Kent. The kindergarten teachers in West
point have heard how well prepared the New Kent children are for
kindergarten, and have asked Cynthia if she might start one here in West
Point. They suggested our church because of our heart for outreach. This
was an informative meeting only. If you have any questions about it,
please ask me!
One Wednesday night in March we want to introduce the Church
to AWANA, a great program that reaches children in the community.
Gavin’s father has begun AWANA in their church with over 100 children
and so we are inviting him to come and tell us about this great ministry.
Also, one Wednesday night I want you to hear one of the great speakers
that spoke at this year Southern Baptist Convention. His name is Dr.
David Pratt.
As you can see, we have a lot of GREAT things happening right
now.
See You Sunday,
Brobob

TENEBRAE… A SERVICE OF SHADOWS
We will be having a Tenebrae Service on Sunday
evening, March 24 at 6:00 p.m. If you are asking,
“What is a Tenebrae service?” an explanation of the
service is below. I hope you will make this service a
part of your Easter remembrance this season.
The word "tenebrae" is Latin for shadows, or
darkness. The purpose of the Tenebrae service is to recreate the emotional
aspects of the passion story, so this is not supposed to be a happy service,
because the occasion is not happy. Instead, the Tenebrae Service is a service
of spiritual reflection, when the worshiper examines his relationship with the
One who gave so much for them that day long ago.
The service was originally designed for Good Friday, but it can be used for
Maundy Thursday or on any other day of Holy Week as well. Both services
have long scripture narratives, which for this service are divided into seven,
eight, or nine parts, each one assigned to a different reader.
The service may include other parts, such as solemn hymns, choral anthems,
sung musical selections, a sermon, and Communion, but the core of the
Tenebrae service works like this:
· It starts out with the church in candlelight. There are as many candles as
there are readings, plus a white Christ candle.
· The readers go up one at a time, read their assigned selections, and
extinguish one of the candles, until only the Christ candle remains.
· Someone then reads or the choir sings Psalm 22, many parts of which Jesus
quoted from the cross.
· The Christ candle is then put out, leaving the congregation in near total
darkness.
· At this point, the service ends. There is no benediction and the people leave
in silence. (The lights are turned up but remain dim so that people can see
their way out.)
· The purpose of the service is to re-create the betrayal, abandonment, and
and agony of the events, and it is left unfinished, because the story isn't over
until Resurrection Sunday.
God bless,
Phillip Higgins, Minister of Music

FBC’s goal for the 2013 Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions is $4,000.00. Please prayerfully consider what amount
your family is going to give to support our missionaries and give generously; God loves a cheerful giver! Thank you in advance
for your support!
Have you ever gone a whole day or two days without food? Sadly, many children in our area are going an entire weekend with little or no food when a school meal is not available. Fortunately, Pointers Packs, a volunteer based group has been developed within West Point UMC to help alleviate childhood
hunger. Nutritious, easy to prepare food will be sent home in backpacks on Friday afternoons to ensure the child has something to eat until they return for breakfast on Monday mornings. WOM (Women on Mission) is collecting kid friendly, nutritious, and non perishable ready to eat food items throughout the months of March and April. Items such as fruit cups, vegetable cups, snack sized raisin boxes, pudding cups, juice boxes, snack mixes, individual cereals, and pop-top canned meals are needed! Thank you for your support!
