KOSC Members learned how to Cook Thai!

The Thai Cooking class was held on 12 January at the Community Center on board MCBH. Walter from Wal-ter Eats Hawaii was our instructor the day. We all had the opportunity to make Thai Spring Rolls, Tom Yum Soup, Curries (either red, green, or yellow), Shrimp Pad Thai and Sticky Rice. He showed us how easy it is to

adapt the recipes for personal taste or food restrictions. He taught us about the ingredients used in Thai cooking, how to use them and where to find them on island. The biggest take away from this class was how surprisingly easy and fast Thai food is to prepare. Everyone had a great time making and eating (and taking a lot home) all of the yumminess he taught us how to create. If you would like more information or are in-

terested in his tours or cooking classes, you can check out his website at waltereatshawaii.com or email him directly at [email protected].

A Letter From the President

Aloha Spouses,

In a community as small as ours, the recent helicopter crash has likely

touched us all in some way. If you need assistance, or know someone

who does, please let us know if there is any way we can help.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the “Pegasus”

squadron: Helicopter Squadron 463, Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Ma-

rine Aircraft Wing.

The Marine Corps Times identified the Marines as:

Maj. Shawn M. Campbell, 41, College Station, Texas

Capt. Brian T. Kennedy, 31, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Capt. Keven T. Roche, 30, St. Louis, Missouri

Capt. Steven R. Torbert, 29, Florence, Alabama

Sgt. Dillon J. Semolina, 24, Chaska, Minnesota

Sgt. Adam C. Schoeller, 25, Gardners, Pennsylvania

Sgt. Jeffrey A. Sempler, 22, Woodruff, South Carolina

Sgt. William J. Turner, 25, Florala, Alabama

Cpl. Matthew R. Drown, 23, Spring, Texas

Cpl. Thomas J. Jardas, 22, Fort Myers, Florida

Cpl. Christopher J. Orlando, 23, Hingham, Massachusetts

Lance Cpl. Ty L. Hart, 21, Aumsville, Oregon

“I think that this is an important reminder – we as Americans should

never forget that whether our service members are training here at

home or whether they’re fighting abroad, that their lives are on the

line. They’ve sacrificed so much for our country, and that’s something

that we’ve got to honor and always remember and always be grateful

to them.” Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, January 15, 2016

In place of the normal announcements in this space, I ask you to

check the KOSC Hawaii page on Facebook for event updates.

Thank you,

Jason Pierce

President, KOSC

Red Footed Booby Tour

On 16 December, KOSC members had an amazing, very rare opportunity to visit the Red Footed Booby colony at the Ulupa’u crater which is the location of the firing range on board MCBH, while water cannons were being installed on the firing range for the protection of wildlife and vegetation. Our guide for the day was Todd, the MCBH Envi-ronmental Biologist from the Conservation Division. The Natural Resources program within the Conservation Division of the Environmental Department manages natural resources to support the military mission, while preserving, protecting and enhancing these resources. Natural resources include land, soils, beaches, dunes, native/non-native plants, landscaping, fish, birds, and other wildlife He provided a very informa-tive tour on the birds, their environment and their way of life. He taught us how the USMC protects their habitat ensuring they continue to thrive in this location. We were able to learn not only things about their habitat and lives, but also the other colonies of birds located on the small island just off of the base. If you would like to learn more about these birds and what the USMC does to protect all wildlife on board MCBH, please visit this site: http://www.mcbhawaii.marines.mil/Departments/Installations,EnvironmentLogistics/Environmental/Fish,WildlifePlants/Wildlife/NativeSpecies/LandBasedNativeSpecies/
