The Parishes of

Letter from Archbishop Vigneron Remembering the 1967 Civil

Disturbance in the City of Detroit

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Matthew 5: 9

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This week marks 50 years since an early-morning raid on a “blind pig” after-hours bar at 12th Street and Clairmount sparked one of the largest civil disturbances in U.S. history, resulting in 43 deaths, nearly 1,200 injuries and millions of dollars in property damage. Although seeds of unrest were sown long before 1967, and solutions have proven elusive even 50 years on, we have made much progress in building up our community to be respectful of the rights of all its members. We can put our faith in Christ and remember His message to love one another.

As we recall these tragic events, let us lift our city, our region and one another in prayer. It is only by the grace of the Prince of Peace that we will find peace. Let us also pray for those touched by the violence of 1967, especially those who lost their lives and loved ones. Let us ask for the intercession of our patroness, Saint Anne as we mark this anniversary, and pray that the grace of healing, reconciliation and brotherhood take deeper root in every heart across our archdiocese. During the celebration of the Sunday Liturgies of July 22-23, 2017, I invite our parishes to offer several petitions during your community’s General Intercessions.

Finally, as a visible sign of solidarity and brotherhood, I wish to draw attention to an opportunity to volunteer alongside men, women and youth from all faiths for a six-day Life Remodeled blight removal and beautification project taking place in the neighborhoods hardest hit by the 1967 civil disturbance. Visit www.aod.org/liferemodeled for more information or to register. (see article on page 3: Life Remodeled)

As Detroit’s pioneer priest Fr. Gabriel Richard said following the great fire of 1805 that devastated the city: “We hope for better things; it will rise from the ashes.” As we recollect 1967, as we work toward healing, and as we move forward together in faith to unleash the Gospel in southeast Michigan, there can be no bystanders. As described in my pastoral letter, all of

us in the archdiocese are to commit ourselves to building inter-cultural competency and breaking down barriers that still divide us. In reading the signs of the times in southeast Michigan, it is clear that we are a community that is ready for renewal. Let us make our remembering of 1967 a guidepost on that path to spiritual renewal.

As disciples of Christ, let us work together side-by-side to build a better City and region so that when people see our work, they will know us as His followers.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Archbishop Allen Vigneron

Metropolitan Tribunal

Each year, millions of Catholics suffer the pain and hurt of divorce. Many end up feeling separated and alienated from both the Church and their parish community. Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal help the staff of the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Detroit offer guidance, hope, and spiritual healing to divorced Catholics.

The annulment process brings divorced Catholics back into the sacramental life of the Church. The Metropolitan Tribunal receives more than a thousand formal annulment requests a year. While processing such requests accounts for a major part of its duties, the Tribunal also reaches out to those in need through presentations by its judges at various archdiocesan parishes throughout the year.

Volunteer for Life Remodeled in Central Detroit

"Effective witness to Jesus has these attractive qualities: joy,

hospitality and generous service to the poor and the

marginalized.” Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, Unleash the Gospel Pastoral Letter

Be one of 17,000 volunteers on a six-day beautification blitz in

central Detroit neighborhoods surrounding Sacred Heart Major

Seminary, St. Charles Lwanga and St. Moses the Black

sweeping, removing litter and brush, lawn mowing, painting

and more. The project kicks off July 31 and runs through

August 5, 2017. Volunteers from AOD parishes, schools,

ministries as well as Sacred Heart Major Seminary and

Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan are invited to serve.

Q. Will we be reunited with our pets in heaven? What does the Church teach? My kids would like to know too.

A. The Catechism of the Catholic Church does not directly address this question. However, it does give us some clues which lead us in the direction of the answer. See CCC 2415 – 2418. I will try to extrapolate from the CCC without the controversy. In the broadest sense, all living things have a soul. The soul being defined as that which gives life to any organic body. When any living thing dies, its soul (its life) is separated from its body. In the case of plants and animals the soul goes out of existence. But in the case of humans, the soul remains in existence because it is a spiritual creation which is created in the image and likeness of (the eternal) God. (See Gen 1:27). The human soul differs from the souls of animals in two important respects. First, it is the center of intellect and reasoning and is where our moral conscience is seated. Because of this, we humans are held responsible for our thoughts and actions. Animals are not. Secondly, the human soul is immortal. In the light of these essential differences, it would seem almost certain that we would not encounter the souls of our pets in heaven. Children need not be saddened by this thought. We can honestly tell them that when they (hopefully) get to heaven, God can do anything, so they can ask God then to be reunited with their old pets. We know, however, that when a person is finally in the physical presence of God our Father, Jesus our Savior, the Holy Spirit our comforter, all the angels and saints, surrounded by the unimaginable glory of heaven, they will probably not be concerned about anything else.

We who are evangelized are drawn to the corporal works of mercy.

That every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood? That approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S.? That one donation has the potential to save as many as three lives? That by giving blood,

you are achieving the corporal work of “Comforting the sick.” Yes you are!!! By donating blood, you are reaching out to those who are sick. Your donations could save up to three lives and bring healing to others. If you are part of the 38 percent of the U.S. population that is eligible to donate, please consider doing so because currently, of the 38 percent, only 10 percent give each year. Holy Family will be offering the opportunity to act in the corporal work of visiting the sick by hosting a blood drive on August 13th. To assist in making this more convenient, you can schedule an appointment by visiting redcrossblood.org and enter Sponsor code: holyfamilymemphis or by calling Linda Mastej at 810-305-6333.

Week 3:

Del Wruble

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father." This beautiful image gives us a glimpse into heaven. The saints who reside there radiate a brightness, a warmth that resembles the sun itself. Gathered around the throne of God, they share in the luminous presence of the King of Kings, the true Son of the Father. Perhaps there really is something spiritual about the nearly universal craving to enjoy a tropical vacation, the trend to escape to warmer climates for the winter, or the move towards permanent residence in sunny climates. The continual presence of sunshine, the enjoyable experience of one warm day after another may be in fact like a little taste of heaven. In the Gospel, Jesus himself describes eternal bliss using the imagery of sunshine. But heat has its downside too. When it's too intense, it can actually be deadly. Think forest fire. Think desert. Think "the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth." These are not images of the four-star vacations that we want to last for eternity. No. Here Jesus is referring to the hellish habitat of "all who cause others to sin and all evildoers." That's not a trip we want to take. As uncomfortable as it may be, we need to examine ourselves to be sure we're not on board a train that's going in the wrong direction. We need to identify and acknowledge any patterns of sin that may have crept into our lives, and seek God's forgiveness. That will get us back on the right track, enabling us to be counted among "the children of the kingdom." Let's aim for a journey to that kingdom, the one true trip to paradise that lasts for all eternity.

Intercessory prayer reflects God’s own character of outgoing love and mercy.

Please pray for:

Fruits and Vegetables

Eating fruits and vegetables provides multiple health benefits, and can supply the human body with vitamins and minerals that help maintain its function. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans it is recommended to eat more than any other food group. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables can lower calorie intake, reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, heart attack, and stroke, maintain a healthy blood pressure, reduce constipation, and boost the immune system. Getting the right mix can help people get healthier now and into the future. In order to consume more fruits and vegetables, and maintain it for a lifetime people can follow these guidelines:

◊ Make half your plate fruits and vegetables

◊ Focus on whole fruits

◊ Vary your veggies
