Page 13, The Cameron Parish Pilot, Graduation Issue, Thursday, May 24, 2007.Advice you neverlearned in school

Although the following listof eleven useful "rules" youdid not learn in school is typ-ically attributed to BillGates, it is actually from thebook "Dumbing Down ourKids" by educator CharlesSykes.

RULE 1: Life is not fair;get used to it.

RULE 2: The world won'tcare about your self-esteem.The world will expect you toaccomplish somethingBEFORE you feel good aboutyourself.

RULE 3: You will NOTmake 40 thousand dollars ayear right out of high school. You won't be a vice presidentwith a car phone, until youearn both.

RULE 4: If you think yourteacher is tough, wait till youget a boss. He doesn't havetenure.

RULE 5: Flipping burgersis not beneath your dignity.Your grandparents had a dif-ferent word for burger flip-ping; they called it opportuni-ty.

RULE 6: If you mess up,it's not your parents' fault, sodon't whine about your mis-takes, learn from them.

RULE 7: Before you wereborn, your parents weren't asboring as they are now. Theygot that way from payingyour bills; cleaning yourclothes and listening to youtalk about how cool you are.So before you save the rainforest from the parasites ofyour parents' generation, trydelousing the closet in yourown room.

RULE 8: Your school mayhave done away with winnersand losers, but life has not. Insome schools they have abol-ished failing grades; they'llgive you as many times asyou want to get the rightanswer. This doesn't bear theslightest resemblance toANYTHING in real life.

RULE 9: Life is not divid-ed into semesters. You don'tget summers off and very fewemployers are interested inhelping you find yourself. Dothat on your own time.

RULE 10: Television isNOT real life. In real life peo-ple actually have to leave thecoffee shop and go to jobs.

RULE 11: Be nice tonerds. Chances are you'll endup working for one.

((PPuulliittzzeerr PPrriizzee WWiinnnneerr))It's a great honor for me to

be the third member of myfamily to receive an honorarydoctorate from this great uni-versity. It's an honor to followmy great-Uncle Jim, who wasa gifted physician, and myUncle Jack, who is a remark-able businessman. Both ofthem could have told yousomething important abouttheir professions, about med-icine or commerce.

I have no specialized fieldof interest or expertise, whichputs me at a disadvantage, talking to you today. I'm anovelist. My work is humannature. Real life is all I know.Don't ever confuse the two, your life and your work. Thesecond is only part of thefirst. Don't ever forget thewords my father sent me on apostcard last year: "If youwin the rat race, you're still arat." Or what John Lennonwrote before he was gunneddown in the driveway of theDakota: "Life is what hap-pens while you are busy mak-ing other plans."

You walk out of here thisafternoon with only one thingthat no one else has. Therewill be hundreds of peopleout there with your samedegree; there will be thou-sands of people doing whatyou want to do for a living. But you will be the only per-son alive who has sole cus-tody of your life. Your partic-ular life. Your entire life. Notjust your life at a desk, or

your life on a bus, or in a car,or at the computer. Not justthe life of your mind, but thelife of your heart. Not justyour bank account, but yoursoul.

People don't talk aboutthe soul very much anymore. It's so much easier to write aresume than to craft a spirit. But is a resume a cold com-fort on a winter night, orwhen you're sad, or broke, orlonely, or when you've gottenback the test results andthey're not so good.

Here is my resume: I am agood mother to three chil-dren. I have tried never to letmy profession stand in theway of being a good parent. Ino longer consider myself thecenter of the universe. I showup. I listen, I try to laugh. Iam a good friend to my hus-

band. I have tried to makemarriage vows mean whatthey say. I show up. I listen. Itry to laugh. I am a goodfriend to my friends, and theyto me. Without them, therewould be nothing to say toyou today, because I would bea cardboard cutout. But I callthem on the phone, and Imeet them for lunch. I showup. I listen. I try to laugh.

So here is what I wantedto tell you today:

Get a life. A real life, not amanic pursuit of the next pro-motion, the bigger paycheck, the larger house. Do youthink you'd care so very muchabout those things if youblew an aneurysm one after-noon, or found a lump in yourbreast? Get a life in whichyou notice the smell of saltwater pushing itself on abreeze over Seaside Heights,a life in which you stop and

Twenty years from now you will bemore disappointed by the things youdidn't do than by the ones you did. Sothrow off the bowlines, sail away fromthe safe harbor. Catch the trade windsin your sails. Explore. Dream.Discover.

GET A LIFE Cont. from Pg. 13 Graduation advicewatch how a red-tailed hawkcircles over the water gap orthe way a baby scowls withconcentration when she triesto pick up a cheerio with herthumb and first finger.

Get a life. Pick up thephone. Send an e-mail. Writea letter. Kiss your Mom. Hugyour Dad. Get a life in whichyou are generous. Lookaround at the azaleas in thesuburban neighborhoodwhere you grew up; look at afull moon hanging silver in ablack, black sky on a coldnight. And realize that life isthe best thing ever, and thatyou have no business takingit for granted.

I learned to live manyyears ago. Something really, really bad happened to me,something that changed mylife in ways that, if I had mydruthers, it would never havebeen changed at all. Andwhat I learned from it iswhat, today, seems to be thehardest lesson of all. Ilearned to love the journey, not the destination. I learnedthat it is not a dress rehears-

al, and that today is the onlyguarantee you get. I learnedto look at all the good in theworld and to try to give someof it back because I believedin it completely and utterly. And I tried to do that, in part,by telling others what I hadlearned. By telling them this:

Consider the lilies of thefield. Look at the fuzz on ababy's ear. Read in the back-yard with the sun on yourface. Learn to be happy. Andthink of life as a terminal ill-ness because if you do youwill live it with joy and pas-sion, as it ought to be lived.Just keep your eyes and earsopen, the classroom is every-where. The exam comes atthe very end. No man eversaid on his deathbed, "I wishI had spent more time at theoffice."

I found one of my bestteachers on the boardwalk atConey Island maybe 15 yearsago. It was December, and Iwas doing a story about howthe homeless survive in thewinter months. He and I saton the edge of the wooden

supports, dangling our feetover the side, and he told meabout his schedule, panhan-dling the boulevard when thesummer crowds were gone, sleeping in a church whenthe temperature went belowfreezing, hiding from thepolice amidst the Tilt a Whirland the Cyclone and some ofthe other seasonal rides. Buthe told me that most of thetime he stayed on the board-walk, facing the water, justthe way we were sitting noweven when it got cold and hehad to wear his newspapersafter he read them. And Iasked him why. Why didn'the go to one of the shelters? Why didn't he check himselfinto the hospital for detox? And he just stared out at theocean and said, "Look at theview, young lady. Look at theview."

And every day, in some lit-tle way, I try to do what hesaid. I try to look at the view. And that's the last thing Ihave to tell you today, wordsof wisdom from a man withnot a dime in his pocket, noplace to go, nowhere to be.Look at the view. You'll neverbe disappointed!

During my second year ofnursing school our professorgave us a quiz. I breezed throughthe questions until I read the lastone: "What is the first name ofthe woman who cleans theschool?" Surely this was a joke. Ihad seen the cleaning womanseveral times, but how would Iknow her name? I handed in mypaper, leaving the last questionblank. Before the class ended, one student asked if the lastquestion would count toward ourgrade. "Absolutely," the profes-sor said. "In your careers, youwill meet many people. All aresignificant. They deserve yourattention and care, even if all youdo is smile and say hello." I'venever forgotten that lesson. Ialso learned her name wasDorothy. ~Joann C. Jones

The US News and WorldReport 2007 Career Guide iscurrently on newsstands. I’minterested in helping peoplebecome successful in theirlives and careers, so I pickedup a copy this weekend.

    An article entitled, Beyond

Graduation: Getting ThatDegree is Just the First Step, had some good common senseadvice for new grads – and foranyone interested in buildinga great career. I've highlightedthe salient points in the arti-cle, and added my thoughtsabout each point.

Consider alternatives tograd school. “Not all trainingoccurs within the halls ofacademe. If you aspire to acareer in business, you mightwant to start at the elbow of atalented manager or two.” Iagree. You can learn a lot justby watching someone who isgood at what he or she does.

Ask questions. “Thoughtfulquestions are the key to learn-ing. Plus, you will impressyour instructors and supervi-sors. That can mean strongletters of recommendation andan inside track on job leads.” Iagree with this advice too.Questions show that you arethinking and want to learn –two qualities that are alwaysappreciated by senior people.

Be picky. “Don’t jump atthe first job you are offered.Cast a wide net when you arelooking. Answer lots of ads, tell everyone you know thatyou are looking for a job. When you get an interview, ask questions to determine ifthe company is right for you. You’ll make a better decision, and you’ll impress employerswith your curiosity and confi-dence.” Again, I agree. It’s dif-ficult to be without a job, butit’s even more difficult to beunhappy with your companyand work.

Be humble. “Ask plenty ofquestions in your first fewweeks. But also do whatyou’re told and see how thingswork out. At a minimum, you’ll prove that you’re willingto pay your dues.” True. Butdon’t be afraid to speak yourmind when you encountersomething that doesn’t makesense. Just be respectful whenyou do.

Seek opportunities.“Identify the most knowledge-able and influential people inyour organization. Make apoint of asking them ques-tions and offering to helpthem. You’ll learn a lot, andmake connections that willhelp you – with career guid-ance and job tips -- in thefuture.” Great point. You’ll besurprised at how many peoplewill be willing to mentor andhelp you in your career -- ifyou’re willing to ask.

Think like a leader. “It’snever too early to start think-ing as if you are leader: some-one to whom others look up.Worker bees who simply keeptheir heads down often feellike small cogs in a largemachine. Are you ready for what liesahead once you stroll acrossthe graduation stage? Will yoube able to steer yourselfthrough the job hunt and, ulti-mately, your first job? Answerthese six questions to find out.

You might think employerswill appreciate your "I'm will-ing to do or learn anything"approach to getting a job. However, most employersinterpret that as "I'm desper-ate" or "I have no focus, so I'mjust taking a shot at whateverI stumble across."

If you're fuzzy about thetype of job you want, now isthe time to work with a careercounselor at your school. There, you can take a careerassessment test, learn howand why informational inter-viewing can help you gainfocus and talk over your spe-cific concerns with someonetrained to help you.

DDoo yyoouu hhaavvee eexxppeerriieennccee?? Employers look for evi-

dence that you've gained expe-rience in your field throughinternships, co-ops, part- orfull-time jobs, or even volun-teering. If you haven't pickedup this type of experience yet,it's a good bet many of yourpeers have and will likelyhave an edge over you in theentry-level job market.

But don't despair if youlack experience. You can get itnow or after you graduate bydoing a postgraduation

    internship, volunteering ortemping.

Imagine going into aninterview and saying, "I lovethis field and know a lot aboutit -- that's why I want to getinto it myself." The interview-er replies by saying,"Interesting. Tell me what youknow." If you've been BSing tothat point, you're in trouble.

Once you've chosen yourfield, study it thoroughly soprospective employers knowyou understand it. Researchthe field's major players byreading industry publications, visiting industry Web sites, and participating in profes-sional organizations andattending their conferencesand seminars.

You may be the best entry-level job candidate the worldhas ever seen. But if you don'tmarket yourself effectively onyour resume and cover letter,no one will ever know.

So make your resume thebest it can be. Tailor it to eachspecific job you pursue, watchout for the most common mis-takes you can make, and besure the document looks asgood as it reads. Learn howyou can put together a decentresume, even as a recent grad-uate. Monster's ResumeCenter can be an enormoushelp, as can a campus careercounselor, your professors,

    and present and past worksupervisors.

Employers have met allkinds of candidates, includingsome who have flat-out liedabout their accomplishments.

It's only natural foremployers to be a bit skepti-cal. That's why you have toeffectively support any claimsyou make on your resume orin interviews with specificexamples. Better yet, considerputting together and using acareer portfolio to prove yourpast achievements.

At times, the real worldcan be a very strange placebecause of people's diversepersonalities, agendas andwork styles. For example, decisions that ought to bemade based on tangible infor-mation and logic are some-times based on office politics. And your success (or lackthereof) on the job will dependas much on your people skillsas your technical abilities. Sobe ready to be judged on morethan your job-related accom-plishments and to judge oth-ers on more than theirs.

For many, the postgradu-ate world can be stressful andexciting at the same time. Youcan minimize your anxietyand maximize your ultimatesuccess by going in with youreyes open and your mind fullyprepared for the challengesthat await you.

After graduationwhat’s next? It’s graduation time, and
