MESSIAH MESSENGER - SEPTEMBER 2016 PAGE 1
Dear Friends of the Living Messiah,
HAVE YOU HEARD THE GOOD NEWS? Long ago, Jesus came to earth to bring God's gracious, forgiving good news for all to hear and celebrate… but that is not all. These days, the Spirit of our risen Lord is delivering good news, and now it is for us.

SIX BAPTISMS IN THREE WEEKS! Lily, Noelle, Jack, Emilia, Natalee, and Amelia were adopted into God's Family by the sacrament of Baptism in August. In the 26-year history of MLC, we have never had so many Baptisms in so short a time. The Holy Spirit is active, blowing, giving new life.
4268.1 POUNDS OF LAYETTES, HEALTH AND SCHOOL KITS, AND 135 QUILTS SHIPPED! Once again this year, MLC will lead the 161 congregations of the SE Synod in the amount sent to Lutheran World Relief. MLC will not get a gold medal for coming in first again. It is much better than that: Count-less people around the world who are living in poverty and struggling to survive in war-torn and disaster-struck areas will be blessed by these gifts.
DID YOU HEAR THE TESTIMONIALS FROM MLC's YOUTH who traveled to Germany in June? They told their stories on Sunday morning, August 14. In gratitude, they served breakfast and lunch to those who enabled them to walk in the footsteps of Martin Luther, have the adventure of international travel, and experience life in a different culture, including staying in the homes of Lutheran families in Germany.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? At this point, I am not certain what this all means. Yet, this appears clear: The Holy Spirit is at work among us now at MLC. When the Spirit is on the move, we’d best keep our ears and eyes open--and, at the same time, hang on for a wild ride! God's Spirit is full of surprises. This is the Lord who announced near the end of our Bible, "Behold! I make all things new!" My suspicion is that God has more “newness” on the horizon for MLC. Soooo…
Whatever you do or whatever you think, please don't miss Sunday, September 11 at MLC, lest you miss…
THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD--AND YOU ARE IN IT! If you are reading this, you probably know the greatest story ever told is the story of God coming to earth in the person of Jesus. BUT did you know that you are in God's story? You are an actor in the GREATEST story--the only story that will last in this life, this world, and into all eternity! Come on Sunday, September 11. Watch and listen for your appear-ance in the greatest story. If you don't see yourself in the story that day, please talk to me. People at MLC count on me to know this story well, and I am certain that you have a role in it.
Grace and peace to you,
Pastor Scott Peterson
Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near;
repent, and believe in the good news.” --Mark 1:14-15

S eptember is here! That means it’s time for our walks! The Walk to Defeat ALS and the Walk to End Alzhei-mer’s are nearly here, so join our teams and air out your walking shoes.
Every 90 seconds, someone is diagnosed with ALS, a disease that causes the nervous system to malfunction and stop sending signals to muscles, rendering victims unable to move those muscles until their lungs eventually stop working.
Every 66 seconds, someone is diagnosed with Alzhei-mer’s disease, a disease that affects the memory and caus-es confusion, paranoia, behavioral changes, and language problems. Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.
There is no cure for either disease, which is why Messi-ah has teams to walk in both events to raise money for the care of patients and research for treatments, pre-ventions, and cures.
Mary Mast is the team captain for the Walk to Defeat ALS, taking place on September 24 at Hudson Alpha. She will also host a Wednesday Night pasta dinner in the Parish Hall on September 14 to raise money for this cause. For help registering to join the team or for information on how to donate, please contact Mary Mast.
Janice Aldaco is the Team Captain for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, a two-mile walk that will take place on September 10 at the Botanical Gardens. For more information, please contact Janice Aldaco.

HYMN OF THE
MONTH:
I Love to Tell the Story
While W.G. Fischer composed the hymn and wrote the refrain, the verses were written by Kate Hankey as part of a long poem. The poem is in two parts and is on the life of Jesus. The first part (50 stanzas) titled “The Story Wanted” was used in the hymn “Tell Me the Old, Old Story.” Content of the second part, “The Story Told,” is used in our hymn of the month, “I Love to Tell the Story”.
“I love to tell the story, for some have never heard the message of salvation from God’s own holy Word.”
This IS the Greatest Story Ever Told!

A CONGREGATIONAL EVENT ALL MESSI-
AH MEMBERS SHOULD ATTEND
This congregational mission fair event on Sunday,
September 11 serves to inform and connect Messi-
ah members to the over 60 ministries, missions, ac-
tivities and small groups of MLC.
One of the greatest ways to honor the lives lost
on 9/11 and appreciate our country’s first re-
sponders and service personnel is to re-dedicate
ourselves in humble service to others.
So come hear the great stories taking place through
Messiah. There is a 100% chance you will learn
something new about your church you didn’t
know before!
There will be two “Greatest Story” sessions, each
taking place right after each morning worship on
the 11th. “Gourmet Greg” Kilby has a myriad of de-
licious quick eats and treats planned to accompany
the event.
A personal invitation - for YOU!
Wednesday Night Café
Do you enjoy Wednesday Night Café? Have you ever invited a friend, neighbor or helped spread the word regarding Wednesday Night Café?
Each week it takes numerous volunteers to go from a list of ingredients to delicious meals served at your table. In order to continue with the great service you are accustomed to, Wednesday Night Café is seeking volunteers to help both in the kitchen and the dining room, especially clean up. If you can give of your time, weekly, monthly, as a substitute or just help at your convenience please get in contact with me. I invite you to join our kitchen fun!
A special invitation for first timers!
I would like to personally invite you to join us for din-ner this fall. If this will be your first attendance with us, please allow us to feed you for free and in good will to hopefully find you coming back for more on following Wednesdays!
This dedicated group of Messiah’s volunteers believe that sharing a meal together gives us a unique opportunity to re-connect with our “church family” each week as well as welcome visitors and form bonds of friendship.
Remember, a great deal of Jesus’s ministry happened around sharing a meal with others!
God speed,

Bring your child or grandchild on Sunday.
It’s every Sunday morning at 9:45 with classes for preschool - high school. We also have child care in the nursery with Ms. Judy.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT CAFE RESUMES SEP 7 Fellowship had a planning meeting with 27 people in attend-ance. Twenty-SEVEN! I can’t tell you how exciting it was to have so many people talking about all the small groups and plans for upcoming Fellowship activities. We discussed coffee and came up with fantastic suggestions for church-wide events, so expect fun things in the upcoming months! It’s an exciting time to be at Messiah.
Men of Messiah (MoM’s) is a primarily social group that plans to meet every fourth Thursday (except August, when it’ll be the 30th) at Old Brown Bear.
Wednesday Night Café, is an in-house café to promote socializing and help people get more involved in Wednes-day activities by eliminating the necessity of fixing your own dinner!
The Women’s Book & Social Club used to be the Mom’s Book Club, but now is open it up to all the women in the congregation. The next event is on September 12. The book they will be discussing is The Name of God is Mercy.
Foodies, a dinner club whose members gather at a dif-ferent home every meeting for food and fellowship, will resume after The Greatest Story Ever Told (Sept 11) wraps up. They are hoping to have new people join the group.
OWLS – Older, Wiser, Lutherans (with the emphasis on “wiser”) – resumes on September 24 at the Stasiak resi-dence, probably for playing dominos.
YALLs - Young Adults Lutheran League is Messiah’s new young adult group, open to ages 25 to 40 but anyone can come if they bring food! Their first meeting will be October 7, grilling at the Burtons’ home.
Fellowship (and Greg Kilby’s cooking skills) will play a major role in “The Greatest Story Ever Told – And You Are In It!” on September 11.
Looking ahead, in October, the Halloween Costume Party and Chili Cook-off will take place on one of the last weekends in the month. Volunteers and chili makers will be needed.
Thanks to everyone who participated and God Bless!

MESSIAH ’S FUTURE & YOU!
The Council met on August 11th with Council VP Mary Ann Stasiak presiding. Highlights from the meeting include:
Pete Woods reported news that plans are under-way for painting and recarpeting the Fellowship Hall at the end of August.
In Long Range Planning developments, Mary Ann Stasiak has compiled a list of suggestions from council representatives which were brought forward through the Cottage meetings. A survey is being developed on these suggestions to gauge congregational interest and support on these ideas.
Heather Neely reported that Stewardship / Com-mitment Sunday is planned for September 25th.
The Church Council is actively planning “The Greatest Story Ever and You are in it! Mission Fair for Sunday, September 11th. This event is being led by Claire Strand and will take place after each service of worship. Greg Kilby is pre-paring the food.

COUNCIL NOTES Greg Kilby, Church Council Secretary [email protected]
Cottage Meeting Summary
May – July 2016 By Mary Ann Stasiak, Council VP
About 5o people participated in the Cottage
Meetings held in May through July. All came with an open heart and an interest in making
Messiah better for the future. What follows
tries to capture the answers that were given when Messiah members were asked.
What strengths do you believe Messiah has available to build upon?
Education: Sunday School
Youth: kids who like outreach, kids’ pro-
grams, youth trip to Germany
Music: Talented leaders, talented congregation,
breadth of music programs
Worship and Discipleship: quality of worship,
variety of worship, outstanding and uplifting sermons, great temple talks, redeeming and
saving word, positive way of speaking the gos-
pel, fresh and new ways of worship, we have good news
Outreach and Missions: core group of construc-tion folks; kit and quilt ministries; strong prayer
team; interesting, creative, and wide variety of
missions; lots of opportunities to be involved
Fellowship: ability to make close friends, contri-
bution and connection, OWLs, Foodies, great
food, small groups, very welcoming congrega-tion; willingness to get involved once asked,
“we saw a place for us”, no fear of starting new
activities
Community: We’re in a growing community, di-
versity of ages
Property: Our location is easy to find, right on
major road, nice facility
Finance and Stewardship: Financially stable,
generosity of funds and time
Staff and organization: Friendliness, great com-
munications, E-News, strong leadership, stable transition of leadership from year to year
Many recommendations for strengths to build on were made on all of the topics.
Many mirrored the recommendations of the Long Range Planning committee:
Many are already being implemented across the Council committees but they can’t do everything
Some will need help from additional people
Some need longer planning and consideration by
the Council
Some were not considered practical
REPORT CONTINUES…
MESSIAH MESSENGER - SEPTEMBER 2016 PAGE 9
Some of the recommendations for
the future included:
Education: Mentoring between adults, youth,
and children; intergenerational ministries; par-
enting Sunday School classes; tax seminars; fi-
nancial planning and financial peace seminars; larger commitment of resources to Sunday
School; more focus on teaching the teachers;
teach people how to evangelize
Youth: Youth social media teams, board game
nights, joint events with other churches, future trips like the one just completed to Germany
Music: Using more of our music talent; music coffee shop for young adults and recent grads;
Music at Messiah-type events for congregation-
based brass ensemble, woodwind group, choir concerts, contemporary choir, etc
Worship and Discipleship: Increase discipleship and evangelism; ask discipleship of members;
make worship more visual; ask people to move
toward the middle of the pews; new banners for the sanctuary; projection during service on
Sanctuary wall; joint Reformation service with
other churches
Outreach and Missions: More construction
teams; Mission fair; re-invigorate Ambassadors and get them more organized; continue to in-
vestigate the Kiswahili Mission for Congo refu-
gees with Pastor Esther Ngomuo; investigate
Davidson Farms home for orphans and foster children; Novus Way scholarships; Mission
Spotlight articles in newsletter
Fellowship: More small groups of 6-8; small
groups for young adults and singles; invite peo-
ple to activities instead of to church; small groups that function like a sponsor family; invite
new members to Wednesday Nite Café in their
honor; young adult ministry
Property: Billboard with service opportunities
outside of MLC; larger electronic programmable signage; more info to congregation on colum-
barium; handyman team; transportation team;
update the library to include summer reading books
Staff and organization: MLC 360 – have new peo-ple come in and meet folks who lead different
areas; coordinator training for people leading
activities; positive contact with all volunteers;
look into getting an associate pastor
What does this mean for Messiah’s Long Term Planning?
Aside from minor tweaks (ie. paint, carpet) and
maintenance and repairs, no more major in-
vestment in facility is needed now
The existing music and worship programs are
very strong
Look to grow attendance and participation
through more diversified activities and missions
Focus investment on staff, education/Sunday School, discipleship
What is next?
The Sep 11 - Greatest Story Ever Told – And YOU are In it! mission fair seeks to inform
the congregation on all the current minis-
tries, missions, and groups. You will be able to hear about each mission and activity, get
more info, sign up, and meet the people who
lead those groups.
Budgeting - All recommendations have been
given careful thought by Council members. The Council will need to consider some recom-
mendations for 2017 budget planning cycle
coming up.
Getting Things Started - Several Council mem-
bers have already started implementing good
ideas that they can pursue without extra peo-ple or budget – but the Council can’t do every-
thing, we need your help.
Here’s where YOU come in.
A survey will be coming out starting early in
September which will help the Council gauge
congregational interest and leadership in many of these new ideas. Look for it via E-News.
It takes at least a nucleus of four people to get a new activity off the ground successfully,
please help us make these new ideas become
realities at Messiah.
Many thanks to all who took time to
participate and provide your thought-
ful recommendations!
