There are very few things in life that you can be assured of and one of them is change! Watching the old home on the Cnr of Capper and Simon Streets taken away in recent weeks, to make way for a new building, triggered some mixed emotions for many. As most of you would be aware, the home was bequeathed to Gunther Village by the Elsebach family. This display of generosity has enabled the home to provide accommodation for a number of staff over the years and now allows the organisation to move forward with the building of a new home on the corner. This new building may be utilised in a variety of ways to meet the needs of our community. It is envisaged at this point in time that the house will provide an alternative to residential accommodation, in the way of ‘supported housing’. This may be long term or short term, for those unable to manage at home. Whatever decisions are made will be made with our community’s needs in mind, both short and long term. The plan of the new house along with information about the possibilities for its use is displayed on our notice board in the foyer area at Gunther Village for those interested. Joke of the Month!GUNTHER GOSS

P A G E 7 O F 1 2

Eleven people were hanging on a rope under a helicopter. There were 10 men and 1 woman. The rope wasn’t strong enough to carry them all so they decided that one had to leave, otherwisethey were all going to fall. They weren’t able to choose one person until the woman gave a verytouching speech. She said that she would ‘voluntarily let go’ of the rope because as a woman shewas used to giving up everything, for her husband and kids or for men in general. She also saidshe was used to making sacrifices and getting little in return. As soon as she finished her speech, all the men started clapping.

A Step Back in TimeSome Interesting Facts:Section 8 Allotment 1These notes are taken for the Gayndah Town Council Rate and Valuation Books held at theQueensland State Archives. The information is only about the allotment as a whole and no information about subdivision isincluded. The Gayndah Town Council came into being when Gayndah was declared a Municipality in 1866.The first Council meeting was held 1867 and the first Mayor was Francis Glynn Connolly whosefamily was in business in several fields and in Gayndah, Mt Perry and Eidsvold, trading for mostof the time as Power and Connolly (Powers were also part of the family). When these ratescommenced the building on 8/1 was the home of Francis Glynn Connolly who died in 1870following a vehicle accident in Brisbane when he was thrown from a buggy. A photo of poorquality is held at the museum showing the Club Hotel on the corner.

The Club Hotel

1876 Owned by Power and Connolly and use was Store, Premises and Stockyards 1879 Owner is Dr Power and lessee is Sarah Reid 1886 Lessee is G Jeynes 1889 Lessee is Thomas Jeynes 1896 Lessee is Mc Namara and owner is Mrs. Annette Macrossan 1898 Lessee is Mrs. McNamara 08/01/1902 Owner is MHJSCA Redman (probably holding mortgage for State) 10/12/1902 Owner is Russia Lutvey 1903 Lessee is Exec of Mrs. McNamara and is then taken over by FT Lukin 1904 Owner is CR Jenkins 1905 Lessee is Hugh Reid 1909 Lessee is Jarvis and the Patrick Byrnes

A Step Back in Time Cont: 1915 Mary Anne Crowe occupies Hotel and appears to also own it 1918 Exec of Mary Ann Crowe and still listed as a Hotel 1921 Michael Joseph Burks is occupied but not listed as Hotel and owner is MHJSCA

Redman C.P.S. (Redman may have been holding a mortgage for the State) 1922 Wragge & Hughes occupier ( Stock and Station Agents who ran stock sales) and looks

like E Kreis as Owner (writing not clear) and it is at this time it was sub-divided. 1927 FA Gunther 1931 Mary Jane Lee 1931-approximately 1955 (No details have been found)The following notes are taken from a booklet about the Early Hotels of Gayndah and interestinglythere are differences about who was where and when. The following are the License holders ofthe Club Hotel as best I can find at short notice.1877, 1878 and 1879 John Reid1879 Sarah Reid1882, 1883 and 1884 Elsebach1885, 1886, 1887 and 1888 Sarah Reid1890 Tom Jeynes18911891, 1892, 1893, 1894 and 1895 Margaret Jeynes1896, 1897, 1898, 1899 and 1900 Pat McNamara

Section 8 Allotment 2

This is also part of GRV and was owned by John Connolly brother and partner of Francis GlynnConnolly. John lived there from 1855, when the family bought the house and store of WilliamYoung, until his death in 1919 aged 103 years. On 27/11/1922 the record shows that the blockwas purchased by Stanley John Gilbert. The present car park was the site of John Connolly’shouse and store and later Gunther’s house block beside the house (where the Gunther Wing nowstands) was used by the Gunther family for their kennels.

Gayndah’s first lady licensee -Mrs Sarah Reid

The house on the corner of Capper & Simon Street wasbrought by FW & MM Elsebach from the widow of arailway worker who was killed in an accident atEidsvold. The house was bequeathed to GuntherVillage in 2001 by Frances William & MadelineMaragaret Elsebach who were decendants ofpioneering families of the Gayndah district.

We would like to acknowledge and thank Mrs CynthiaBerthelsen for taking the time to research and providethe information in this publication.
