NOVEMBER 2016 NEWSLETTER Critical Incident Stress Teams and Swiss Air 111-A Case
Study- 16 November 2016
Col (Retired) Don Denne MSM, CD will be our speaker at HMCS Prevost 16
November 2016. (Meet and Greet 7:00 PM including cash bar; General Meeting
7:30 PM)
Background: On Sep 2, 1998 Swiss Air 111 plunged into the waters of St.
Margaret's Bay Nova Scotia with the loss of all 229 passengers and crew. The
resulting recovery operation involved Regular and Reserve soldiers, aircrew and
naval personnel. Included in the deployment was a newly trained "Critical Incident
Stress Team" under the leadership of then Major Don Denne, DCO 2RCR. This
presentation outlines the team’s training and role in working with those deployed
to manage the mental stress of being involved in a major disaster over an extended
period.

Afganistan Monument Dedication: Sarnia-Lambton A memorial was dedicated on Sunday 31 October in Sarnia’s Veteran’s Park to the
soldiers who fought in Afghanistan including those from the region who made the
ultimate sacrifice. A decommissioned LAV III (light armoured vehicle) was
recently anchored in the park. The Light Armoured Vehicle III was used
extensively in Afganistan and was instrumental in CAF assault, mobility and
protection roles. The LAV III represented leading technology for armoured
vehicles. Over 200 people attended and at the end of the ceremony were invited to pin
poppies on shrouds hanging below the three plaques on the LAV III monument
while the names of all 159 Canadian soldiers killed in the conflict were read aloud.
It is noted that 635 others were wounded in combat. Forty-thousand Canadian
Forces men and woman fought in the war that extended from 2001 to 2014. Soldier
statistics indicate that 33% were 18 to 27 years old.
Members of the 4th battalion of The Royal Canadian Regiment, First Hussars,
Royal Highland Fusiliers and 31 Canadian Brigade Group HQ participated, along
with cadets, emergency responders and other organizations. Six Silver Cross
families were in attendance at the ceremony. The Silver Cross (officially known as
the Memorial Cross) is awarded to mothers and widows (next of kin) of Canadian
soldiers who died on active duty or whose death was consequently attributed to
such duty. The Memorial Cross was first instituted by Order-in-Council in 1919.

Rank Appointment Insignia- Canadian Armed Forces
The formal ranks structure within the Canadian Armed Forces signifies a person’s
position within its hierarchical structure. On pages 12 and 13 are the up-to-date
rank appointment insignia for Flag Officers and General Officers. The complete
rank appointment insignia for each service may be viewed from the links on
page 13. The changes to the ranks structure returned certain Canadian ranks and
titles to their traditional equivalents. Both the navy and air force received the title
"Royal" in their name and the army has become the "Canadian Army."

Canadian Army Flag The new Canadian Army flag was unveiled July 14, 2016, during a ceremony on
Parliament Hill in which Canadian Army members welcomed their new
Commander, Lieutenant-General Paul Wynnyk.
“The flag traces the evolution of the CA’s identity, reinforcing the link between the
brave veterans of Afghanistan and the Cold War period with the heroes of First
and Second World Wars and Korea. In doing so, the new design reflects the
Canadian Army of today while respecting tradition by combining elements from several past Canadian Army flags. “
