President’s Message

“Hau’oli la Hanau ABWA!” (Happy Birthday to ABWA)

Greetings ABWA “Ohana” (family)!

Congratulations as American Business Women’s Association turns 66 on 9/22. We are so blessed to be

part of an organization that is always striving to support women in all aspects of their lives!

A big “Mahalo” (Thank You) to our sisters from Punahele and Onipa’a Chapters, for joining us at our Sep-

tember Joint Chapter Event. It was a fun evening reconnecting with old friends and for some of us, mak-

ing new acquaintances.

Another huge Mahalo to our guest speaker, Roy Yonashiro from the Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry.

Hearing the stories, some successful and some not, about the plight of patients in need of a bone marrow

or stem cell transplant was heart wrenching. It was reassuring to learn that donating bone marrow or

stem cells can be a relatively easy process. It was also great to hear about the legislation that has been

passed to protect donors in terms of their employment and pay. What was disturbing, was to hear that

there are doctors out there who do not advocate bone marrow transplants prefer to subject their pa-

tients to numerous chemotherapy or radiation treatments. As Roy mentioned, the Hawaii Bone Marrow

donor Registry is the last opportunity to save a life.

Next stop…Fall Membership Drive. Please save the date - Wednesday, 10/21 and plan to bring a guest

who you feel will benefit by joining Na Kilohana ‘O Wahine Chapter. At our meeting, Evans Taylor from

Allstate Financial Services will educate us on financial management and how to better understand our re-

tirement picture. Stay tuned, because after the presentation Yvonne and I will share our experiences

from National Conference!

Aloha nui loa, Fondest regards,

Claire

Myrtle Ching-Rappa, Retiree (formerly Director of Mānoa Career Center

and Coordinator of Special Projects, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs) Myrtle ‘s own

career at the University of Hawaii, spanned 40 years. One of her greatest achievement in her work

experience was winning the “Best of Conference” award at the national conference of the National

Student Employment Association. To overcome obstacles on her job, Myrtle saw challenges as

learning opportunities. She did the best job she could and learn from mistakes. The three most im-

portant skills that Myrtle learned while working: 1. Listen before talking 2. Always keep the goal in

the foreground 3. Under promise, over deliver. The thing Myrtle liked most about her job was see-

ing growth in the staff, both students and professionals. (8 of the 15 full-time staff members in the

Mānoa Career Center started as student employees) Her co-workers would describe Myrtle as, pas-

sionate; fair; and a workaholic. The skills Myrtle has learned that helped define her was, succession

planning; staff development, and leadership development. If Myrtle could choose any job it would

be, Executive Assistant to the President of the University of Hawai`i
