“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

(John 1:5 NLT) 16 years ago the "LIGHT" was revealed

.......not covered with a bowl or hidden under a bed but placed on a stand where its light can be seen by all who enter Luke 8:16 (NLT)

2015 / 2016 was a year of a deep experience of hope because of the LIGHT, not only in the life of Lebone Village but for all who "came in" -those of us who are here daily, those who visited & those who are benefi ciaries. After reporting two years ago on our "God of the impossibilities" it hardly seems possible that yet another year has passed, but with our God of the impossibilities we once again can just stand in awe of all the blessings & provision in abundance! e past year in which we experienced so many diff erent emotions, was a year in which we grew not only as individuals & as an organisation but in our dependence on our God & on refl ection of this all we are humbled. e Lord showed us over & over that Lebone Village is His & that He is in control here. rough the tough times, the good times & the sad times He was the one who helped us, blessed us & showed us clearly that nothing & nobody can damage or destroy the work that we are doing for Him & that the refi ning process we've been through is all part of His pruning process for the Kingdoms work.In a year of very tough & challenging economic times our local, national and International community's support overwhelmed us once again. Literally the dedication, sacrifi ces, open hearts & open wallets of hundreds of people are the reason why we are able to write this report of Light & Hope.During the past year we were privileged to receive visits from a number of International volunteers from America, Belgium, England, Germany, Sweden & the Netherlands. ey all became part of our wider Lebone family & very special relationships were forged. e spiritual & fi nancial support we receive from our friends abroad is growing every year & their

Page 3friendship is something we cherish. Another explosion of LIGHT took place in e Netherlands when a group of friends & supporters of Lebone Village established a Dutch Trust called "Vrienden van Lebone" & the commitment of Leo & Sonja Muis, Reijer & Riet Berendse and Johan & Anita de Hoop in promoting & supporting us is mind boggling - we praise God for them & the support through this initiative. To make ends meet we continued with various fundraising initiatives during the past year & more than ever put extra eff ort into our self sustainability programs. Our ministry to people living in darkness continues to expand & grow & through the support of so many we were blessed in being able to meet more needs. In all 5 the diff erent sections at Lebone Village there was growth & progress & it gives us great joy in reporting on these.

Lebone House is the home to 40 children at the moment & a lot of them are now teenagers which brings its own unique challenges but with the calibre of people we have working with the children in all areas it is a joy to us to see our aim to raise responsible, balanced adults is being realised. We see positive results from the life skills & life values we teach them & we remain committed to providing all our children with quality holistic care, which all children deserve. e question of what happens to our children when they are not children any more or when they are fi nished with school is often asked of us & our answer is we are just like any normal family who will care for their children as long as they need/want us. e biggest challenge facing us now is for the child who cannot perform academically & therefore alternatives have been sought to give them a trade or life skill. Our fi rst success story in this was initiated by a group of 1st year Occupational erapy students who found placements for them in the fi eld of their choice & two of our young men have learnt skills in carpentry & plumbing. We are happy to report that this venture was very successful & we are indebted to these girls for making it possible & are excited about what the future holds for the boys & girls who struggle accademically. In order to make sure the staff caring for our children are equipped to do so, all our staff & volunteers working with the children had training during the year: they all attended First Aid, fi re fi ghting & safety, Child & Youth Care Worker & nutrition courses. All Managers received quarterly management training as well.Lebone House is a place fi lled with love & care & we need to acknowledge each one of our staff members who love & care for our children like they would for their own. is is not always an easy task & is a very big responsibility but despite the challenges & diffi culties, they do so with dedication & love.

We continue to provide much needed day care & preschool services to our own children as well as to the children of the surrounding community. rough the commitment of our preschool staff these little ones are learning the foundational skills of ECD to further their education & be school ready. is task is made easier through our well equipped Lebone Edu-Centre, under the excellent management & guidance of the principal & Grade R teacher, Kedibone Mtuze & her staff .

With quality education being one of the most important gifts one can give a child we are happy that our children are receiving this at local schools &with the valued support of Aspire trust & Heerewaarden Diakonie our children have skilled people who can assist them in their studies, homework and assignments.

Our children's physical development is just as important as their intellectual and emotional development. e Human Movement Science students from the University of the Free State are assisting us in our children's physical development & the eff ort & enthusiasm they put into this task never goes unnoticed

Our Skills Development section continues to address a variety of needs in our community as well as meeting a great need with our older children. e vision of the skills development centre has exploded in a diff erent direction - meeting the skills transfer needs of our children where they now have the opportunity of learning many of the skills we teach here. is makes holiday times not only playing times but also learning times. ey are privileged to have opportunities that few other children have & it is heart warming to know that they have this advantage through what they learn here at Lebone Village.

e gifts made in our beadwork section are still very popular locally as well as internationally whilst we have a waiting list of orders in other sections, we are aware of this being yet another one of the many ways in which the blessings bestowed on us are visible & meeting the needs of others; many adults who would otherwise have been sitting at home without hope have a purpose everyday through what they are learning in our Skills Development section.

At Lebone Village we are always open to new ways in which we can serve our community & in which we can better peoples’ lives. One such opportunity that crossed our path 18 months ago was to collaborate with Qala Phelang Tala in teaching people cost eff ective alternative building methods. In this Green building project people were empowered in methods to build climate resilient homes for themselves. rough what was done here in the last 18 months, not only the dream of changing our old cement dam into an arts and crafts hub was realised but it has also provided us with an opportunity to open a coff ee shop which will contribute towards our Social Entrepreneurial potential. We are indebted to Anita Venter from the University of the Free State, who together with her team made this possible !

A lot of development took place in our Agriculture Section this past year, which not only enabled us to feed more people, empower in excess of 250 people but also helped towards our self sustainability. e addition of another tunnel & equipment sponsored by the Unogwaja Light Fund contributed towards this growth.

Our feeding programme benefi ts greatly from this section & because food parcels are not just handed out but recipients of food parcels have to enrol as part of the training programme in the agricultural section which then rolls into their community as they are assisted to start their own vegetable garden at home as well as being responsible to then train & assist their neighbours to so the same. All training, seeds & equipment are provided for them & the result of this enforces our empowerment with responsibility aim by "not giving food but by teaching them to produce food"! e vegetable gardens, orchard & husbandry section (boiler chickens, laying hens & piggery) all continue to produce much needed food for hundreds of people, we praise the Lord for His favour & blessings on this section, which contributed substantially to the 1402 children & 414 families fed in 2015/2016 .

COUNSELLING

Counselling and Social Support is section continues to provide help in the lives of many people & mostly because of the dedication & eff orts of our Administrator, Me Lulu Ngcobo. We are confronted more often than we'd like to be by people who face the challenges of not having legal documentation for themselves or their children, sometimes even for their parents, resulting in them not being able to access social support off ered by the government. is is not only the case with adults but also with the numerous children we have in our diff erent programmes/sections. It is defi nitely not an easy task to help them through this long process but we know that all the sacrifi ces & months of hard work in the end is more than worth the results. In a needy community which faces numerous social challenges every day counselling will always be a necessity. We are aware that it is not the counselling alone which helps people through diffi cult times but that it forms a vital part of the process & the positive results experienced in so many people is heart warming & the knowledge that what happens in this section steers many lives from the road of self destruction to the road of recovery & hope. One of biggest needs for many years of having our own Social worker which was realised in 2014 through the generosity of Kevin Grant & Geoff Lockwood from FNT Logistics in London, continues to empower us in providing quality holistic care to our benefi ciaries. e number of children & families we were able to support & feed grew yet again this past year due to the continued & generous support from Add Hope. Our Ambulatory erapeutic Feeding Clinic continues to meet the ever increasing demand of malnourished babies & children. When confronted with the massive need of saving lives in our community we praise God for His continued abundant supply through all the many people supporting us. e dedicated & committed role played by Dr Sarah Jane Smith & Nicolien Wydeman, Nutritionist, from Pelonomi Hospital in our ATF Clinic contributes greatly to our success rate of saving the lives of children on a daily basis & it is literally a case of hungry, dying children being given a second chance in life. To see these children being transformed from thin, sick (sometimes dying) babies into chubby, healthy, happy children is just one of the privileges we are able to witness on a daily basis here.

With so much hardship in this world it is easy to believe that we are without hope but through our experiences of generosity & kindness, we have seen that goodness is actually

the norm on this planet. ere are ‘lights’ shining & doing amazing things despite the darkness. Success is the fruit of personal eff ort plus support & encouragement from people like you. With God's Grace, His provision through His people, the support of all our friends,

e dark world has no light if the people of God do not shine brightly

"If you don't have a shadow, you're not in the light" A powerful symbolic reminder of our journey of hope & light and we have many stories but hear from two of those who crossed our path this year.A young lady who approached us for help:Dumela ousi Lulu, do you know that out of the people I've asked for assistance, you at Lebone Village are the only ones that responded to me and I appreciate that but since you said you guys are an orphanage, I don't think I can accept your help cause that touched me and made me realise that there are people out there who are going through tough times than me and those people are those kids who don't have parents. So thank you very much 4 willing to help me but i think I'll survive. May God bless you and others at Lebone Village, may He meet all your needs but i would want to come there one day and off er my services to you(cleaning, helping out etc) because u guys are doing a great thing by helping others. THANK YOU"Paediatric DieticianAs the dietician working in the Paediatric Department of Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital, theLebone Hunger to Hope project is very near to my heart! I am confronted with children who are malnourished on a daily basis and there is only a limited amount of support that the hospital is allowed to give. NSP (Nutritional Supplementation Program)

Page 17: Page 1 Annual Report 2016 - Lebone Village · 2019. 4. 29. · Page 5 Lebone House is the home to 40 children at the moment & a lot of them are now teenagers which brings its own

Page 17 e hospital, together with the local clinics are bound by the Nutritional Supplementation Program. is program is an initiative from the National Department of Health. It allows us to identify children who are vulnerable in the communities because of certain illnesses, poverty or abandonment. Children qualify only for a certain time period where after the caretakers have to take over the responsibility to take care of their children. is is a very good thing because parents should take responsibility for their children. ere are however cases where children are especially vulnerable, but does not qualify for the NSP anymore:

- borderline malnourished

- failure to thrive at an older age (does not gain weight optimally)

- abandonment or neglect

- special needs, like cow’s milk allergy/refl ux, etc.

We depend greatly on Lebone Village to provide these children with special needs with the correct milk and nutrition. Without the Hunger to Hope project our hands will be tied even more.

My future dreams:

I, as a dietician want to make a diff erence to the children in South Africa but also to Lebone Village. Formula milk can be expensive, but children only need it until 12 months of age. Vulnerable children over one year are allowed to drink full cream cow’s milk and I would like to help Lebone Village in making this a reality. In this way we will be able to reach more children who need our help.

anks to KFC ADD HOPE’s sponsorship we have been able to see the diff erence being made to many families and I hope to continue this relationship between KFC, Pelonomi and Lebone Village!

Kind Regards.

anks fi rstly, all thanks, honour & praise to our Heavenly Father, without whom Lebone Village

would not exist, much less be what it is today...... sixteen years on bears witness of God’s greatness when one sees the miracles that have occurred at Lebone Village & how

development has taken place with no resources other than our faithful God who has provided through so many obedient to His Call - proof indeed of how mere mortals have

been able to attempt something large enough that failure is guaranteed ……… UNLESS GOD STEPS IN.

at is the easy part!! Not so easy is to thank all the people that contribute to & form part of Lebone Village. To mention names would need a book of its own so we say thank you to each & everyone, we know who you are, you know who you are & be assured the Lord knows it too! ank you for being the vital part you play in being that very special “piece”

of what makes up the “whole”. e greatest reward for being part of the Lebone family is being able to witness miracles – many, many miracles because of the staff , donors & volunteers that give of themselves so selfl essly, who are the machine that encourages

miracles to happen - one of the GREATEST miracles is seeing a child smile again!

“When you let your own light shine, you unconsciously give other people permission to do the same” (Marianne Williamson)

Faith, trust in God and strong commitment towards our ultimate goal, our vision & calling are what turns a small group of people caring for 15 children 16 years ago, into a large, multi-faceted care centre bringing LIGHT & hope to so many people. Lebone Care Centre is, and always must be, a place where people must consistently be more important than tasks, where the qualities of self-sacrifi ce, gentleness, service without reward, patience, kindness, nurturing of relationships & mercy are a part of our Lord’s leadership
