Protectthe Children

Teaching kids to be safe around unfamiliar animalsWe’ve all had the experience of someone else’s dog approaching us.Uncertainty about the dog’s intent can be frightening, especially toyoung children. The ASPCA website provides parents with advice onteaching their children to read a dog’s body language and to identifysigns that it wants to be left alone. The website also helps parentsteach their children how to protect themselves from an overexcitedpet by demonstrating the basics of dog bite prevention, such asrolling into a ball, protecting hands and face and calling for help, rather than running or screaming if chased by a dog. For moreinformation, check out Dog Bite Prevention and Safety atwww.aspca.org. For particular help, you may call AssistanceMinistry at (213) 637-7650.

Rediscover, Reconnect, Return

Landings, for those wishing to investigate returning to the Catholic Faith Renewed interest in Catholic Evangelization recently has given birth to many successful programs of outreach, invitation and initiation. Returning Catholics, however, are often shuttled into programs designed to meet other needs, i.e. RCIA, RENEW, Inquiry classes, etc. Here at Padre Serra we offer Landings; a proven Paulist program specifically designed to welcome those who wish to investigate returning to the Catholic Church. The group provides a “landing” place, a safe spot to touch down, where those looking to return will share faith journeys, prayer, discussions of Catholic spirituality with ordinary Catholics who are trying to live their faith. Many of them, themselves have been welcomed back home through the Landings process. This process was developed in the midst of the real world. It is simple. It is gentle. And it works! May you feel God’s loving embrace and gentle guidance as you consider embarking on this new journey of faith! The next session begins Jan. 9, 2013; 7:00 – 9:00 pm in the San Fernando Rm. For more information call the parish 482-6417 ext 341.
