Motorcycle dreams, Southern elegance

G eorge Barber had a dream - to have a place to drive race cars and ride motorbikes in his own state, create a park-like setting around it, and give back to his community.

Barber Motorsports Park is a dream come true. Mr. Barber was racing sports cars in Europe back in the 1970s, when his father died suddenly. He had no choice but to give up his passion for racing and focus on running the family business – Barber Dairy Company.

Staying true to his love of motor vehicles, Barber began col-lecting and restoring classic cars in 1989, but his interest soon turned to motorcycles. He decided to race some of his vintage

motorcycles and put together a race team to represent Bar-ber Dairies. It was the spark for the Barber collection, whose mission was to reflect the history of motorcycles from a global perspective.

Fast forward to 2003 and after many years of hard work and planning, George Barber’s dream of a place for his love of motorsports came to fruition. Barber Motorsports Park is a world-renowned facility and hosts a number of world-class motorsports events such as the AMA Superbike Classic, IMSA sports cars, Legends of Motorsports, kart racing and the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. The spectator-friendly circuit is set within a perfectly manicured and sculpted landscape with heavily wooded surroundings that is second to none.

The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is located on the premises of the lovely Barber Motorsports Park, and in its cur-rent form houses 1400+ motorcycles. It is considered the largest motorcycle museum in the world, with the greatest vintage Lotus racecar collection in N. America. With over 7000 motor-cycle books and more, the Barber Museum Research Library & Archives contains one of the largest collections of motorcycle literature in the world.

A new, 84,000-square-foot expansion – including a space for temporary exhibits, an outdoor terrace and a large glass atrium – is now open, bringing the total size of the museum to over 250,000 square feet. Barber said the museum expansion will allow visitors to see more of the racetrack from the building. “We’re all really excited about it,” he said. “It’s going to be a great addition for us.” Two pedestrian bridges now connect the museum to the track’s infield. One bridge is 408 feet long, excluding patios, and is believed to be the longest continuous bridge of its type in Alabama. Its structural design allows up to 3,000 people on the bridge at one time. The glass flooring at the center of each of the bridges is made of 1-inch tempered glass and is actually 20 percent stronger than the concrete walking surface surrounding the glass.

There are four disciplines of AHRMA competition at this year’s Barber Vintage Festival – roadracing, trials, cross country and vintage motocross. On the roadracing side, motorcycles of all ages, displacements and brands are showcased; we even have sidecars and a taste of the future with electric-powered eMo-toRacing bikes. Take a walk through the paddock to see all of the bikes up-close and visit with our motorbike pilots, who range in age from “newbies” in their 20s to experienced veter-ans in their 80s.

This weekend of vintage motorcycle racing will undoubtedly renew your excitement for these historical machines, while providing lively competition for all. ▲

In January of 1989, the paperwork was drafted, and the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association, Ltd., became the member-owned, not-for-profit organization that we know today. In 2014, we celebrated our Silver Jubilee – that’s right, we’ve been providing on-track classic-bike competition now for 28 years!

On the roadracing side, our program showcases everything from the pre-1940 bikes dominated in this country by American iron (but also open to the exotic European, even supercharged machinery), all the way up to the early-’90s Superbikes. It’s a grand selection of genuinely-historic machinery, displayed on the track by very-talented “Clubman” riders, super-accomplished National-caliber pilots, former factory-backed riders, and even World Champions.

In addition to the classic classes, AHRMA offers the country’s best selection of alternative modern racing, including Sound of Singles, Battle of Twins, and Sound of Thunder motorcycles. And, yet another alternative type of racing, we’re hosting a class of cutting-edge electric bikes! Our celebration tour visits 10 of the country’s greatest venues, and will be experienced by tens of thousands of enthusiasts.

For riders who prefer to “do it in the dirt,” AHRMA’s comprehensive off-road program features vintage motocross, post vintage motocross, cross country, observed trials and dirt track racing. There will be over 90 races this season, all across the country, in a wide array of styles – AHRMA’s racing series cover it all!

AHRMA, 28 years on

It’s still about the bikes

As we look back on the 28 years of AHRMA, we have to thank the many people who have made massive contributions to making it happen. From top to bottom, this is certainly a volunteer-based operation, and it can’t be done without each and every one of them.

Our main function remains the same: Educating people while showcasing the greatest, most-interesting motorcycles on Earth, typically at speed, with riders who want to do it the old-fashioned way. Folks who might have missed the experience the first time around are still treated to the sights, sounds and smells of yesteryear at each of our events. Amazingly, over a quarter-century has passed, but we’re running forward with as much gusto as ever.

Barber Vintage Festival Grand Marshal Wes Cooley is best-known for his accomplishments aboard Yoshimura Suzuki Superbikes. Cooley was AMA National Superbike champion in 1979-’80, and won the Suzuka

In addition to vintage motocross, cross country and trials, AHRMA also conducts events in the disciplines of post vintage motocross and dirt track.Early long-travel MX bikes race many of the same venues as the vintage MX series, from farmers’ fields to iconic locations such as New York’s famous Unadilla Valley Sports Center and Michi-gan’s RedBud MX circuits.Dirt track is the most traditional form of motorcycle racing in the US and AHRMA reaches back to those roots, including half-mile, short track and TT events. In the 1960s and ‘70s, flat track racing ruled the land – maybe it’s time

What’s HAPPENING

Balanceand FinesseThe goal is to maneuver a bike through tight corners, over logs and across off-cambers – all without putting a foot on the ground. Motor-cycle trials is a unique sport, challenging the rider’s balance and throttle control.Competition begins at 9:00am Saturday in Lot C.
