Paddle8 presents Desert Living: Icons of Modern Design at the Ace Hotel & Swim

Club, Palm Springs to celebrate Modernism Week

Exhibition of vignettes of furniture and art curated by Homepolish interior design specialists

Paddle8 is delighted to present Desert Living: Icons of Modern Design, an exhibition of design and art at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club, Palm Springs, coinciding with the start of Palm Springs Modernism Week, an annual pilgrimage for design collectors. Paddle8 has partnered with the designers at Homepolish, the innovative company that matches interior designers with individual clients, to curate vignettes that embody the desert modern aesthetic, featuring iconic works of Hollywood High-Style, contemporary, mid-century, and California design alongside the most coveted modern and contemporary art, all of which will also be available as part of a Paddle8 online auction. The exhibition of Desert Living: Icons of Modern Design will be open to the public Saturday, February 14 and Sunday, February 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Clubhouse of the Ace Hotel & Swim Club, located at 701 East Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs. The auction will be available for bidding online from February 11 through February 19, with a “buy now” option that will allow for Palm Springs visitors to complete their transaction onsite. Collectors can bid and browse at paddle8.com/auctions/desertliving or on Paddle8’s iPhone app. The installation of Desert Living: Icons of Modern Design at the Ace—a restored Modernist gem in the Palm Springs desert—embodies Paddle8’s vision for a collecting destination, offering extraordinary works of art and design, all authenticated by trusted specialists. Orlando Soria, Homepolish’s West Coast Creative Director, and Jason Stein, Paddle8’s senior design specialist, have partnered to create eclectic, livable interiors that bring the auction to life, mixing textures, periods, and color with extraordinary art. Four vignettes will be installed in the Ace’s 4,000-square-foot Clubhouse space, reflecting distinct themes: California: Art and design by creators with strong ties to the West Coast, including Frank Gehry’s prototype “Wiggle” chair made of corrugated cardboard ($3000–$5,000), Daniel Wenger’s leather “Lotus” chair ($3,000–$4,000), a steel and wood “Cattail” lamp by Bill Curry ($1,500–$2,000), and art including John Baldessari’s print Double Motorcyclists and Landscape, 2013 ($2,500–$4,500), Ed Ruscha’s painting Artie’s 90, 2000 ($40,000–$60,000), and Richard Prince’s photographs from his “Cowboys and Indians” series ($25,000–$35,000). High-Style Modernism: Maximalist and exuberant examples of design, often featuring mirrored and luxurious surfaces, including a pair of Orgone chairs by Marc Newson ($1,800–$2,500), a chromed 1970s wine cooler by Gucci ($400–$600), a large mirrored table box by Paul Evans ($1,500–$2,500), and a “Capitello” chair by Kartell ($1,500–$2,000); art highlights include a 1992 nude photograph by Helmut Newton ($2,500–$4,500) and a triptych of photographs by Mona Kuhn ($12,000–$14,000).

 

Classic Midcentury: Quintessential modern design, including Charles and Ray Eames’s iconic “Billy Wilder” chaise ($3,500–$4,500), Raymond Loewy’s leather and steel “Hoop” chair ($700–$900), and a unique 1960s surfboard table. Art includes Slim Aarons’ iconic scene of mid-century Palm Springs life, Poolside Gossip, 1970 ($18,000–$25,000) and Mario Pani’s interior renderings ($800–$1,200). Contemporary and the Future: Futuristic-feeling and cutting-edge art and design, including a rare “Sputnik” lamp ($1,500–$2,500), Gerald McCabe’s seven-stem “Daisy” table ($2,500–$3,500), Charles Hollis Jones’s set of three O-Line bar stools ($3,000–$4,000), and contemporary art works by Kenny Scharf, Sam Francis, and David Hockney.
