Pacem in Terris— peace with justice, for a world restored, thriving and secure, for all, forever
Youth Peace Art Travelling Exhibition
Program and Guide Pacem in Terris initiated the peace art exhibition as a way of celebrating our 50th Anniversary in 2017. We thought that a good way of honoring our origins, as well as those 50 years, was to go back to the vision, values, ideals and inspiration of our youth. The best way we thought of to do this was to check in with today’s youth and ask, “What kind of world do you want to live in?” This exhibition by our younger citizens is intended as a dialogue between our youth and the older citizens of our community. The various artworks are an answer to “What does peace look like?” and “What does a peaceful world look like?” In a sense, our youth are saying, by their visual representations — “This is the world I want to live in.” Our response to these visionary statements of a desired world can be as varied as “Can you tell me more about this? What does this mean to you?” to “What do we need to do, working together, to make the world you would like to live in happen?” These responses, in tune with the purpose of this exhibition, are what we would like to foster. Over 240 young people, between 6-18 years of age, submitted their visions of peace. Their art was viewed by close to 600 people at The Delaware Contemporary during PeaceWeek. Fourteen different schools, community groups, and faith-based organizations participated. We are grateful to the artists and their teachers for taking the time and energy to envision a more peaceful world. Inspired by their terrific work and funded by the Delaware Division of the Arts, Pacem in Terris created this smaller traveling exhibition. We hope you enjoy the artwork and encourage youth to create art for the 2nd Annual Youth Visionary Peace Art Exhibit at The Delaware Contemporary this September 17-24, 2017. If you would like more information on how your children or organization can get involved with the next version of this inspiring and visionary exhibition, or to volunteer in helping in whatever way you are able, please get in touch with us at [email protected] NOTE: Artists were invited to both draw their image of peace and to write a short explanation of their image. Be sure to read these captions as the full impact of the artist’s work will be found in the interaction of the image and their words. Captions for all the art that had this addition are printed below each art work in this Program.

Explanation: For this piece I wanted to show peace being “born” from the core of the Earth because even if today it doesn’t seem as though there is any form of peace due to all the events that have happened, the world still consists of peace within its self and us as a people. I drew the Earth similar to a cracked egg where doves are flying out of it. The large dove represents the “mother of peace.” Overall this picture is representing peace as a foundation for our world and society.

Shaniece S. Grade 11, Newark High School
Explanation: My ideal image that represents peace to me was hands coming together and to color the hands as the world which basically is supposed to represent us as a whole coming together as one due to the fact we have been at war with one another throughout our history. That’s why I drew a peace sign in the background to show us as citizens coming together finally and creating peace. I also drew the birds because birds represent peace as well.
Alyssa Mason Grade 12, Newark High School Explanation: When I think of peace I reflect on my belief in the balance of light and dark, destruction and life. In my piece, I wanted to show nature as a prime example of balance. The sun is quite literally a ball of fire and everything the sunlight shines on turns to flames. However, the further away you get from the damage to the hills and mountains, the cooler and calmer it gets. In the foreground is a single tree which is connected to the water, clouds, and people. The pile of fallen leaves from the singer tree models after a human sitting down with their legs to their chest. Finally, I wanted to blend all the art elements to create a simple sunset which to me is always peaceful.
Chloe Frantz Grade 11, Newark High School Explanation: To meditate is to reflect upon oneself and find inner peace. Inspired by Yoga Journal.

Explanation: I got the idea from a song. The tornadoes only affect some people. The people who have been affected don’t seem sad, but happyish.
Tauson and Piara Biggs Grade 5 and Grade 12, Arden Community Recreation Association Summer Camp
Explanation: Our idea for world peace was for all the weapons, cruel words and all of the negative things to be melted down to create a new world. Every kind of person would help by placing one puzzle piece on the new globe where there was no hatred and no war.

Jabar Wilson Grade 6, Gateway School Explanation: I like peace because it helps keep people calm. It gives you ideas of how to calm down. I chose to use the colors of the rainbow. To me, rainbows represent peace and happiness.

THANK YOU! Thank you for honoring our youth with your careful attention to their work. Thank you for examining our children’s view of peace and the world in which we all want to live— and for your thinking about peace, and hopefully how we can all engage in making it real in our lives. That is the mission of Pacem in Terris, and why we worked so hard to make these powerful visions of peace visible. We hope you are inspired by the Youth Peace Art Exhibition. The visions of peace and what our youth want the world to look like are awesome— and a testament to the enduring idealism and sensibilities of our younger citizens. If you are moved, and want to help Pacem in Terris foster youth peace art visionaries, and our other programs of peace and justice, here is what you can do:
• VOLUNTEER—Support the Pacem in Terris Youth Visionary Art Exhibition at The Delaware Contemporary this fall. You can do this by volunteering for this— or other peace-related activities of Pacem in Terris
• CREATE ART—Encourage youth to submit artwork for this upcoming exhibition
• DONATE to the Pacem in Terris Youth Art Exhibition. Contact Pacem in Terris at [email protected] / 302-656-2721 / 401 N. West St.,
