Cars catch alight in brush fire onMain StreetTwo cars caught alight last Tues-day after a man living in an out-side roomof ahousehadallegedlybeen burning garden refuse.The incident occurred behind a

In die mees onlangse brand in dieBoland het 300 ha se veld in die slaggebly toe ’n wegholbrand kort voorOujaarsdag in Bainskloofpas nabydie gewilde Tweede Tol-kampter-rein uitgebreek het.

’n Groep van 80 brandbestryders,drie helikopters en ’n spotter vlieg-tuig is na dié brand ontplooi.

William Pietersen is Sondag omstreeks12:40 in sy ouerhuis in St. Basilstraat deur syma gevind. Hy het ’n meswond aan sy borsgehad.

Hy is per ambulans na ’n hospitaal gejaagmaar het op pad daarheen aan sy besering be-swyk.

Daar word beweer dat vier van Pietersense vriende by die huis aangekom het waarna’n stryery tussen hulle uitgebreek en Pieter-sen met ’n mes in die bors gesteek is.

Pietersen was tydens die voorval alleen bydie huis. Die motief vir die moord is nog niebekend nie, hoewel daar beweer word dat diemansoordwelmsgestryhet.Alvierverdagtesis tans in aanhouding.

Een van die verdagtes het hom kort ná diemoord aan die polisie oorhandig en het Dins-dagvlugtigindieWellington-landdroshofver-skyn. Die saak is tot 20 Januarie uitgestel vir’n borgtogaansoek. Die ander drie verdagtesis laat Dinsdagmiddag in hegtenis geneem ensal vandag (15 Januarie) verskyn. Die onder-soekbeampte, konst. Carl Petersen (021 8649600), kan gebel word met inligting.

Matric is just not enoughAnother year’s matric results have come and gone, with both cheersand tears.

For some schools there was a slight improvement whilst for othersthe downward spiral continues.

The bottom line is that there are still far too many failures. But theproblem with education lies far deeper than an inadequate pass rate.

It is reported that in 2004, whenmany of the 2014 matriculants wouldhave been in Grade 2, there were countrywide 1 085 570 children whoenrolled for that grade. Of these, only 403 874 learners passed matricin 2014. A very large number of those who enrolled in Grade 2 in 2004have fallen by the wayside long before they even reached matric.

What have become of those students and what will become of thosewho did not make the grade this year?

On topof everything, academics, business leaders, entrepreneursandmore are all of the same opinion that matric is just the first step inbuilding a successful future career. Only a handful ofmatrics will walkout of school into a job. Further study has become crucial.

It is very clear that more learners need to pass matric and in doingso, be equipped to venture into further studies after school. Otherwisetheyare justgoingtobecomeanotherstatistic feedingoffsocialservices.

The New Year has just begun andaswitheveryother,yourspiritsarehighandyouarehopingforabetteryear than the last, or the previousone, or the one before that.

It’s a time to be jolly, with still afew days of leave left and a trulycarefree spirit about, before realitysets in again.

Today is one of those days. Onein which you just want to get lost.You sit in a smoke-filled pub witha couple of friends who are feelingexactly the same as you. Wantingtime to stand still and not think ofthe realities, which will very soonappear. During moments likethese, the topics of politics and reli-gion are generally banned. You donotwant to get bitten by that rattlesnake, which threatens to poisonyour mind and your soul. So it islaughs and jokes about good timesand bad times and anything thatcomes to mind.

Dirk, who is aquiet soul, sudden-ly unexpectedlytakes a seat next tome. He finishes hisdrink and calls thebartender for a re-fill, before he takesus all by surpriseby starting to speak.

“What’s this crap happening inEurope?” he says, as he blows athick plume of smoke from his tar-stainedlips.Nowhehascaughtourattention. He barely ever says aword, greeting one with only briefeye contact andwhatmay look likea very slight nod. Everybodyknowshim,butnobodyknowshim.

It is 8 January 2015, barely 24hoursafter themassacrewhich left12peopledeadinanewsroomintheheart of Paris,. At that stage no onewas aware or could imagine thebloodshed that would follow in thenext 72 hours.

“You know,” says Dirk, “I justdon’t seem to understand how somuch hatred could lead to all thatbloodshed.

“I was in the army back in theearly eighties, amere troepie, bare-ly 19 years old. One minute I hadmatriculated and was jolling withprettygirlswhohadsippedenoughEsprits to makeme look attractiveon the secluded beach of Cool Bay.

“Then suddenly the next daymyhead was being shaven at Youngs-field army base. Then I was sleep-deprived,nightafternight,exposedto excruciating physical exercisewhich almost broke my body. Andthen permanently tongue-lashedby a korporaal, barely a year olderthanmyselfandmybarrackmates.Hehadobviouslyleftschoolinstan-dard 8 and was trying to hide hisinsecurities in some way.

“After six months of hell, just asI thought it couldn’t get worse, wewere thrown into a Hercules andtaken off to some God-forsakencountry to fight the terrs.

“Wedidn’tevenknowwhata terrwas in those days. We were justtime and again told that if we didnot kill them, theywould take overour country, rape and pillage ourwomen and kill our children. Andso they tried to teach us to hate.

“But in the quiet ofnight I would lie andthink, how can onehate someone somuchthat you could justmow them down atfirst sight? I couldn’tcomprehend it.

“I still can’t today.“The war drove

many of us a little bit crazy, othersquite a bit crazy. I think it was be-cause we couldn’t understand thishate thing.

“Yes, some of those guys did be-gin to hate, but I don’t really thinkthey knew who they hated – theterrs or the korporaals.

“Years later, when I was gettingdivorced, a friend askedmewheth-er that now means that I hate mysoon to be ex-wife.

“Ithoughtaboutthisquestionfora minute or two and said, no, I donot hate her. Hate is too harsh aword. Too harsh a feeling. Tooharsh a burden to carry with you.In the end, hate will surely eat youalive.”

Before Dirk finishes his lastdrink he says: “I’ve alwayswantedto go to Paris. You remember thatsong, The eyes of Lucy Jordan?Something about riding around inParis with the warm wind in yourhair?”

I wonder if the warm wind willever blow in Paris again.

Daar is ’n groot probleem met ha-weloses wat in Wellington sewoon- en sakegebiede plak. Ken-nisgewings dat munisipale wetteoortree word, word geïgnoreer, enook nie afgedwing nie.

Drie kommerwekkende uit-vloeisels van die probleemwat niedeur Drakenstein-munisipaliteitaangespreek word nie, is:

– Geen sanitasiegeriewe nie. Dis’n erge higiëneprobleem (Spruitri-vier, Wellington);

– Skynbaar gegoede jongmensewoon tussen die haweloses en ge-bruik die gebied as basiswaarvan-daan misdaad gepleeg word.

Volgens inligting wat beskik-baar is, is dit Wetstoepassing severantwoordelikheid om die pro-bleemaantespreek,maarhullerigniks uit nie.

Die munisipale bestuurder, Jo-hann Mettler, en hoof van behui-sing, Gary Boshoff, is gekontak enons hoop dat daar ’n alternatiewe

heenkomevirdiemensegevindsalword.

Die munisipaliteit asook die pro-vinsiale regering werk saam metverskeieorganisasies inaldiedorpeom hierdie persone by te staan nadie beste van ons vermoë. Van dieorganisasies bied skuiling vir diéwat dit wil hê en ander help hierdiemense om weer op die been te kom.

Ongelukkig is die hulpbronneookbeperk enwordhulle gestrek totbreekpunt toe.Daaromisdit ookbe-langrik dat die publiek verant-woordelikoptree.Dit isonwettigomindie openbaar te bedel enwanneeriemand dan geld gee, maak dit dieprobleem net groter. Ondersteuneerderdieverskeieorganisasieswatbaie meer met hulle beperkte hulp-bronne vermag.

In Wellington het Danie Nel ’nbaie suksesvolle program, G-Vou-cher, uitgerol wat ’n wesenlike ver-skilmaak aan die lewe van hawelo-se persone; dieDrakenstein-munisi-paliteit het in 2014 ookbeginmet dieidentifisering van ’n perseel vir ’nnuweskuilingvirhaweloses inWel-lington.

I fully agree with what was said inthe last issue of the Paarl Post re-garding the entertainment at thelights festival.

We used to be so excited and es-pecially went to see those acts onstage. These past few years it just

went down hill. People like Byron‘D, Kharmah, Christaline andmore were always the highlight ofour visit. Why aren’t these artistspart of the line up anymore?

After all, they are representingPaarl everywhere they perform.

Why is it that Paarl is not so proudof them as they are true Paarlites?

Meer as 4 000 Wellingtonners het die kleur-ryke vertonings van die Minstrels se verskil-lende groepe by die stadion bygewoon. Vol-gens Danny van Rooyen van die Minstrelswas die byeenkoms op Nuwejaarsdag in alle

opsigte ’n groot sukses. Besoekers het in hulduisende opgedaag en gesorg dat die byeen-koms ook finansieel baie suksesvol was.

Die volgende klopse-vertoning deur dieMinstrels vind op Saterdag 31 Januarie plaaswanneer die groepe van Kerkstraat af deurdiedorpmarsjeernadieBoland-stadionwaarhulle teen mekaar sal meeding.

The Drakenstein Municipality does regular accredited testing in a SANAS approved laboratory of the quality of further improve the quality of the final effluent discharge from the works. 6,5 persent, maar die produsente-prysindeks vir landbou, bosbou envisserye was 2,3 persent. Laasge-noemde behoort binne enkelemaande ’n dalende invloed op voed-selprysinflasie te hê. Een van diebydraende faktore tot hierdie ten-dens is die afname in die brandstof-prys. Uitgawes aan brandstof be-loop 14 persent van landbou se in-termediêre uitgawes enaanduidings is dat onlangse en ver-dere prysverlagings hierdie koste-komponent kan verklein. Die resvan die voedselwaardeketting hetegter ook ’n bydrae te lewer om diekoste-voordeel aan verbruikersdeur te gee.

Voortgesette investering is sekerdie beste waarborg vir volgehouevoedselsekuriteit en volhoubare

mededingende produksie. Terwyldaar uitdagings is wat die bedryfmoet oorkom om sy mededingend-heid te handhaaf en terselfdertydgroter bydraes tot transformasie endie maatskaplike opheffing vanwerkers en hulle gesinne te lewer,is daar vertroue in die toekoms vandie bedryf

Dit blyk onder andere uit die toe-name van 8,4 persent in die waardevanbelegging in landboudie afgelo-pe jaar, gerugsteun deur ’n 10,1 per-sent toename in die waarde vangrond en verbeterings en 9,9 per-sent in dié van masjinerie, imple-mente en voertuie.

Dis ’n positiewe tendens waaropdaar voortgebou moet word omSuid-Afrika ’n nog beter land vir alsy mense te maak.

weekafter thesurpriseresig-nation of previous coach Eli-ze Kotze.Saayman will be assisted

byElsje JordaanandMarthaMosoahle,Netball SA said ina statement on Tuesday.Their tenure takes effect atthe beginning of February.“Weareconfident thatSaayman

would be able to guide the team toa successful Netball World Cham-pionships (WNC),”NSApresidentMimi Mthethwa said.“She is a mature coach who has

been on the same platform beforeand during her tenure the teamwas ranked fifth in the world.”Saayman was the coach for the
