"Pa`akai a Malamalama" (Salt and Light) Reflections From the Dean

Aloha Mai Kakou,

It is SO GOOD to be back after just over 3 weeks away from home, family, and the Ohana of The Cathedral of St. Andrew. I have been back a week and much as happened as Cathedral life moves on, and today we had the joy of witnessing the marriage of Susan Sowers and Donna Van Winkle. My time away was alternately busy, contemplative, and refreshing. It also gave me time to reflect on ministry and mission as an Episcopal Cathedral. Part of my reflection has been inspired by the words of our Presiding Bishop-elect the Rt. Rev. Michael B. Curry. In Salt Lake City, Bishop Curry calls us to be focused on mission as expressed in three key areas of ministry: (1) making disciples; (2) offering ourselves in service to all in need; and (3) giving prophetic witness to re-orient society to the dream of God for justice, peace, and reconciliation. These three areas are shaped by our Five Marks of Missions and in the future weeks, I intend to amplify on what this might mean for us in community. However, this Sunday at our Faith Forum we shall hear

from the new Executive Director of Faith Action for Community Equity (F.A.C.E.) Ms. R. Leotele Togafau about how faith-based organizing movements are essential to building more just communities in the world. Mahalo Nui Loa Walter+

Also note that Bishop Bob's annual visitation with the Cathedral isSunday, August 2nd. He will celebrate at all three services. Different Ways to Donate to School Supplies for Kalihi Waena

During the Sundays in July, there has been a good response with people donating generously to the Outreach Committee's school supplies drive. Be aware there are multiple ways to contribute to this donation drive:

• Write a check with "School Supplies" or "Kalihi Waena" in the memo line and place in the collection plates • Purchase the school supplies yourself • Buy items on sale at particularly good price • Buy basics: composition books, folder paper, pencils etc. • Sponsor one child by buying a whole set of items on the school supply list for a certain grade level

Recommended School Supply List for 2015-2016

Two friends in our parish sponsored one fifth grade student each. They chose fifth graders because they had the most complex supplies required. They found it cost about $50 to cover the entire list of requests. Considering that 81.6% of the students at Kalihi Waena are on free or reduced cost lunches, their families do not have the ability to purchase $50 worth of school supplies for each child. Many families have multiple children which makes those school supplies lists beyond the realm of possibility for the families. For most of the students at Kalihi Waena to start school with the supplies they need for academic success, they will need assistance. Thank you for all the assistance you have provided so far. The school supplies will be blessed on Sunday, July 26, and delivered to Kalihi Waena on Monday the 27th. If more money or supplies come in later, we will be sure they are delivered to Kalihi Waena. Ann D. Hansen, [email protected] Outreach Committee Liaison to Kalihi Waena

Join Daughters of the King for Another Dibley Romp! (Er...Make that "Serious Prayer Study")

Sunday, August 2, 2015

Noon to 2:00 pm

Reminder! RSVP to DOK by Noon on July 31 for Dibley Program! DOK Queen Emma Chapter's August 2 meeting will feature the Vicar of Dibley, Episode 4, "The Window and the Weather." A storm hits Dibley, smashing one of St. Barnabas' large stained glass windows. What will Geraldine do to solve the problem? Join us to view the episode and discuss the lessons to be learned from it. Our meeting will be held at the Real Food Cafe, an outdoor, poolside venue at Honolulu Park Place, 1212 Nuuanu Avenue (at the corner of Nuuanu and Beretania). Substantial snacks will be served. For our planning purposes (and because Honolulu Park Place has security to rival that of Fort Knox), please RSVP by noon, Friday, July 31, to be sure your name is on the access list. RSVP

to [email protected] and [email protected]. Title your email "RSVP to DOK August 2015 Meeting." Please include your phone number. A real estate agent would describe our location as "steps away from the Cathedral," but in reality, it is 3 short blocks. If you are able, please leave your car at the Cathedral and walk the short distance. There will be a guide to lead a "walking convoy" that will leave from the Coffee Hour area about ten minutes to 12 that you may join (if you have RSVP'd). If you have mobility problems and would rather park in the Honolulu Park Place building, please include that request in your RSVP.
