— Distinguished Judges —Marlene Gilley

Marlene Gilley was on the founding staff of Musikfest ‘84 and the Director of Administration for the next five years. She left following the Musikfest ‘88 festival. In 2003, she began performing as a jazz vocalist and eventually formed the Marlene Gilley Swingtet. More recently, they performed at the Opening Ceremonies for Musikfest 2014, Allentown’s music program “Summer in the City” and Christkindlmarkt. The Swingtet continues to perform the music of The Great American Song-book and remains the music she loves to sing.

Tony Gairo

Tony Gairo maintains an active schedule as a composer, performer, and educator of jazz, the saxophones, flutes, and clarinets, jazz composition, arranging, theory and analysis, and jazz history. Voted the 2004 Jazz Musician of the Year - Lehigh Valley (PA) by Pulseweekly Magazine, he is the leader of the Tony Gairo Band, an 11-piece jazz ensemble whose “book” consists mostly of his compositions and arrangements and the Tony Gairo Big Band, a 17-piece modern jazz orchestra whose repertoire consists entirely of his original compositions. Since 1996, Gairo has been an Artist/Lecturer on the Jazz Faculty at Moravian College, where he is the Director of Jazz Combo I and teaches saxophone, flute, clarinet, jazz improvisation, jazz composition/arranging, and jazz history. In April 2006, the Music Department presented him with the T. Edgar Shields Prize for Distinguished Studio Instruction. Since 2004, he has been an adjunct on the Jazz Faculty at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA where he is currently the Director of the Jazz Ensemble. In addition, he is an active member of the Music Faculty at Lafayette College, Easton, PA. Mr. Gairo has been commissioned to compose original scores and arrangements by Moravian College, Wissahickon High School, Lou Lanza and the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective. His recent Moravian commissions include Collaboration: A Jazz Ballet (2007) and the jazz opera The Real Book of Gig (2011). As always, Tony Gairo keeps a busy calendar of public and private performances and recording sessions both as a leader of bands and as a sideman in a sundry of ensembles, styles, and projects.

Patrick Dorian

Patrick Dorian, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Music, was a member of the East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania Music Department from 1987 through 2013. In 2010, he was awarded the highest faculty honor, the preeminent rank of Distinguished Professor of Music. He taught courses in jazz studies and film music and was the liaison to the Al Cohn Memorial Jazz Collection. He is the author and reviewer of many professional journal articles, chapters in several books, and CD insert booklets.

Professor Dorian’s long-time experience as a concert band and jazz ensemble director make him a sought-after evaluator and adjudicator at many festivals. His biography is included in Trumpet Greats: A Biographical Dictionary by David R. Hickman et al. (2013). It outlines Professor Dorian’s accomplished teaching career, in addition to his performing and recording careers, especially as a long-time member of the Phil Woods Big Band, the David Liebman Big Band directed by Gunnar Mossblad, the Jazz Artists Repertory Orchestra (JARO), and the Water Gap Brass. He has toured internationally, with performances at major jazz festivals, jazz clubs, and concert halls.

Professor Dorian performed on two Grammy-nominated CDs (Celebration!, 1997, and Beyond the Line, 2003). He also performed on the David Liebman Big Band (DLBB) DVD and CD LIVE . . . As Always (2011). Recently released recordings include New Celebration by Phil Woods and the COTA Festival Orchestra, Tomorrow’s Expectations by the DLBB, and A Tribute to Wayne Shorter by the DLBB. He has recently performed with The Temptations, The Four Freshmen, and the national tour of Cathy Rigby Is Peter Pan.

In June 2007, Professor Dorian was presented with the Great Teacher Award by the ESU Alumni Association. In October 2007, he was inducted into the East Stroudsburg Area School District Music Hall of Fame. He was also awarded the Fred Waring Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Arts and the Community. Professor Dorian holds degrees from Northwestern University (MM Performance) and Ithaca College (BM Performance and Music Education) and taught instrumental music in public schools for 14 years.

Master of Ceremonies: Dr. Neil Wetzel

Dr. Neil Wetzel is Associate Professor of Music at Moravian College (Bethlehem, PA) where he teaches saxophone and is Director of Jazz Studies. Having earned both a BM (Jazz Perf.) and MAT degrees from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In 2007 he completed the EdD program at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. His dissertation focused on teaching jazz improvisation. As founder and music director of Moravian College’s summer music camp, July Jazz Getaway, Mr. Wetzel has worked and played with Clark Terry, Al Grey, Terrell Stafford, Milt Grayson, Stanley Turrentine, and Bobby Watson. He has backed many great performers including Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Bob Hope, Johnny Mathis, Bernadette Peters, the Temptations and the Four Tops. He has recorded with the Philly Pops Orchestra and singer Patti Page in Carnegie Hall; this CD won the 1999 Grammy for best Pop Traditional Performance. He can also be heard on four CD’s with jazz pianist Eric Mintel: Live, Hopscotch, Dynamo and Four on the Floor. Mr. Wetzel has also played and taught at the Lana Jazz Festival in Lana, Italy as well as the Karel Velebny Jazz Workshop in Frydlant, Czech Republic. He is Vice President of the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective and the chair of their education committee.

His latest CD project “Cowboys and Capes” was just released.

Awards Presenter: Alan Gaumer

Awards presenter: Alan Gaumer has been playing trumpet since 1958. As a young trumpeter he appeared on the national television show the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. As featured Jazz trumpeter in the US Navy Show Band, he performed in over 70 countries throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and South America.

He is currently in his twenty third year as jazz trumpet artist/lecturer at Moravian College. He is very active in local jazz education and adjudicates regularly at regional school jazz festivals. Former, and one current (trumpet & jazz “improv”) students, have won positions in the prestigious Pennsylvania State High School Jazz Band.-trumpet section. Alan regularly preforms with several ensembles including, the Quintet- Co-op Bop, in duet with Robin Bryan (Body and Soul) and as a member of the trumpet section of the Deer Head Inn- COTA All-Stars Big Band. He also appears with the Moravian College Faculty Jazz Quintet and continues to free-lance in a variety of genres.

Alan is the founder and Artistic Director of the Lehigh Valley based non-profit organization: The Pennsylvania Jazz Collective. Its mission is to educate and expose community members of all ages to the richness, the history, and the diversity of American jazz. www.pajazzcollective.org

He performs with a “Who’s Who” list of jazz personalities including: Randy Brecker, Phil Woods, Bob Dorough, Bill Goodwin, Tony Marino, Craig Kastelnik, Nelson Hill, Gary Rissmiller, Tom Kozic, Skip Wilkins, Dave Leonhardt, Tom Schuman, Tony Gairo, Paul Rostock, Neil Wetzel, Bill Washer, Matt Vashlishan and many more. As a young trumpeter he played with the big bands of: Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey & Harry James.

A short list of recording credits include: “Co-op Bop”, a jazz quintet; “Caught in the Web” with Rob Stoneback; “Introducing” the Moravian Jazz Faculty; his own compilation of original compositions, “One To Go”, and just released, “Cowboys and Capes” a Neil Wetzel project.

Improving the future through arts education

The Pennsylvania Jazz Collective is a (Lehigh valley) Pennsylvania 501(c)3 non-profit, non-stock company, organized exclusively for Educational and charitable purposes, more specifically to foster Jazz appreciation through a regular series of educational initiatives, public performances, and special programs.

It is our mission to provide to people of all ages, a community-wide exposure to the diversity of American Jazz through various small group combinations. We will present all styles of Jazz developed through the past one hundred plus years of our unique American historical musical heritage. Through education in the arts, particularly Jazz, the PA Jazz Collective seeks to instill essential and life enhancing skills. Some of these are discipline, creativity, essential problem solving skills, working well with others in a cooperative atmosphere, confidence and intellectual development.

PA Jazz focuses on the musical communication that is at the core of Jazz, which is an expression of individuality and the spontaneous artistic language spoken within the context of a democratic framework. We are cognizant that Jazz performers and students draw upon multiple educational and social disciplines to simultaneously interact in a manner that uniquely ties together many educational disciplines and learning domains.

Primary Goals and Objectives

PA Jazz will showcase Lehigh valley Regional Jazz artists of distinction. We will promote Jazz Awareness as an American art form. We will continue to develop and implement Jazz education initiatives and programs for all ages, musician and non-musician.

Some of the main topics of educational focus include: fostering open-mindedness, stimulation of creative thought, enhancing problem solving skills, instilling confidence to enhance all future interaction and promoting discipline and team work.

PA Jazz in 2013

PA Jazz featured a spring awards presentation/performance hosted by Muhlenberg College. Tom Kozic, guitarist, a graduate of Whitehall HS was the artist of the year. April is “National Jazz Appreciation Month” and PA Jazz artists were presented in various neighborhoods throughout the Lehigh Valley. Youth showcases were presented at Godfrey Daniels and others. We once again partnered with the Moravian College Music Department to present guest artist PHIL WOODS in our second Fall Jazz series. The theme was the Jazz Saxophone. This concert featured commissions by area arrangers and was archive recorded. Our year concluded with a Jazz Vesper service at the Church of the Manger. We thank the many contributing sponsors.

PA Jazz in 2014

PA Jazz partnered with the Ice House to present their first annual Lehigh Valley Jazz Idol presentation. Modeled after the popular television program “American Idol” this program was a showcase for aspiring area music students. Prizes were sponsored by local businesses and included cash and appearance opportunities. Our annual awards were also announced at this event. They included our Artist of the year plus student and sponsor recognition. PA Jazz artists were featured at many venues throughout the Lehigh Valley including a wine and Jazz day at Sorrenti’s Cherry Valley Winery. A MAYFAIR performance featuring a regional All-Star Septet with representatives from neighboring Jazz organizations included: Steve Rudolph (Harrisburg) Central Pa Friends of Jazz, Marko Marcinko & Tony Marino (Scranton) PA Jazz Alliance, Rick Chamberlain & Matt Vashlishan (Poconos) COTA, Andy Warren (Berks) Alan Gaumer & Neil Wetzel from the LV PA Jazz Collective. The 2014 PA Jazz year closes with the presentation of this Jazz Series III with special guest BOB DOROUGH. The featured instrument – PIANO.

Key Achievements

In its first year- 2012- the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective presented two major presentations (spring & fall) and a score of education projects. The first, a spring concert featuring the PA Jazz nominated artist of the year- NELSON HILL, (Bangor HS Eastman Conservatory graduate) was presented with the theme “Three generations of alto Saxophone masters.” This performance featured octogenarian grand master, multiple Grammy award winning and industry poll winning alto saxophonist PHIL WOODS. He is a resident of nearby Delaware Water gap and was a teacher to a young Nelson Hill. Completing the third generation- Stroudsburg HS and Manhattan School of Music graduate, a former student protégé of both Nelson and Phil – JAY RATTMAN. An additional fourth generation student, Nazareth native PATRICK McGEE was also introduced at this performance hosted by Bnai Abraham Synagogue in Easton, PA.

Our fall series was hosted by the Moravian College Music Department. Four days of Jazz trumpet events included an assembly outreach program for local area students, grades 4 – 8, a full day of Jazz trumpet clinics featuring PA Jazz Collective area Jazz trumpeters of distinction and two evening concerts. World renowned, Pennsylvania born, YAMAHA Jazz trumpet artist RANDY BRECKER performed concerts with Co-op Bop and Moravian student ensembles. PA Jazz sponsored a Randy Brecker artist visit to Allentown School district Raub Middle School.

Additionally PA Jazz sponsored various youth showcases and workshops at area locations. It should be mentioned that all this was accomplished while application for 501(c)3 status was under review. The Pennsylvania Jazz Collective has since been awarded IRS Tax Exemption status. Our year culminated with the production of a Holiday CD featuring PA Jazz Collective artists. This CD was sponsored by Dave Berger and Rose Day with matching contribution by PPL and was given to all donating patrons at our year end Jazz Vesper service presented at the Church of the Manger, Bethlehem, Pa. December 2012.
