Description:Tis is a logo for a video producing company.
Date:2-21-16
Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01/Visual MediaBen Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
Objectives:-Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal tothe audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.-Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them.
-Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc..-No photos or live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil,
but delete the image before submitting.)-Refine one logo with variations for color
Process:Its funny, because the first design that I made in illustrator was the one I t hought I would be using. Ifelt really good about the design and creativeness of the logo. But then when I decided to just do a hatand change it up so it was different than the first, I realized just how much more I liked that one. TenI had to unify by choosing the r ight colors that matched on the color wheel. And also I had to thensimplify from my first design to my second one and even more for my third one. Te programs thatwere used for this was s imply Adobe Illustrator. Te skills that were necessary was how to use all thetools in Illustrator.

Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
-Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and ow
-Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
-Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
-Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements
-Use a mask to apply a lter to one part of the image
-Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scriptures…your choice)
-Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)
-Select good quality images
Process:
The program that was used for this was adobe photoshop. The tools used would be Google to search for images
and the websites listed below that provided the images. The skills that were required for the making and design
of this project consisted of a photoshop based knowledge. The steps that were taken when designing this was
rst Formulating a design. I thought in my head what I wanted to make, so rst I had to nd a kid looking up
imaginatively. Luckily I found exactly what I was looking for. Then I had to start organizing. What exactly could
I put in there, and how could I pic pictures that would blend together well? By contrast, I wanted to pick imagesthat involved dierent colors than was what in the main picture. So I looked for pictures that had a lot of orange
in them. The blending is where the whole “unify” process came into play. The oranges worked well with each
other and then I was able to simplify by making them less cut out looking. I kept passing the brush tool over the
edges with a very low opacity to make it seamless looking.

Brochure
Description:
A two Sided (duplex) folding brochure about Vans shoes.
Date:
2-21-16
Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 01/Visual Media
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
-Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
-Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
-Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One should be
clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.
-Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
-Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process:First of all, I created a logo using illustrator. I decided to create an advertising company, and make a brochure
about a well known company. I had been thinking about Vans because I recently had to make a commercial and
I made it about Vans and so I still had that mindset so I just decided to make i t about Vans. Using indesign, I
designed a brochure using pictures I found doing a google image search. I created an interesting body copy and
created a path to follow to help the reader see how they can create their own shoes. Using Photoshop, I found an
image of a longboard and then separated it in a dierent layer.
Message: The message behind this is showing how Vans has become so popular over the years and how they are
care about their customers. The brochure shows how the buyer can design their very own pair of shoes tailored
to them.
Audience: Anyone in the market for shoes.
Top Thing Learned: How to make a b rochure
Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic, red
Title Font Name & Category: Avenir Next, Sans-Seri
Copy Font Name & Category: Big Carlson, Oldstyle
Word Count of copy: 280 words

Web Page
Description:
To the side is a picture showcasing what my webpage looks
like that is showing and describing a logo that I made for
my employers.
Date: 3-12-16
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 01/Visual Media
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
-Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 30 0 – 500 pixels.
-Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience.
(Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,)
-Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags – Doctype (provided), html,
head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog)-Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSS provided to format the
HTML to complement the logo design. Change at least the following: The h1 text color & h1 back-
ground color, font colors for the paragraphs & list items, the background color, font families and add
at least one css comment.)
-Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
-Open the HTML page in a web browser and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch margins for
printing.
Process: The process that I went through was rst of all making the logo, but about this specic process, I rst
started out making a html document in order to make a working webpage that would show my logo
as well as the description of it. After that I made a css document that stylized the whole thing in or-
der to make it more appealing. I had to organize which colors I wanted to use that would also match
my logo, then I had to contrast by picking which colors would work best with each other while mak-
ing each other stand out. Then I had to unify by making sure that it all looked coherent. After that I
simplied, by changing some of the font to look better and simpler as to not create so much noise.

Photodesign
Description:
This is a project that was created using a combination of
photography and photoshop. The intent of which is to
create a visual appealing image with a message that
links the image to the person seeing it.
Date:
2-7-16
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 01/Visual Media
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop, Camera
Objectives:
-Learn basic photography skills.
-Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the
layout.
-Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.-Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destruc-
tive editing.)
-Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.5×11 page layout.
-Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
-Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8″ (0.125) from all four sides
Process:
The programs that were used for this project consisted solely of just photoshop. The tools that were
involved in this was one DSLR Camera, to be specic, a Canon 6D. The skills that went into this was
simply that of learning how to take a picture with the right placement, focus, and lighting, and then
touching it up in photoshop. Going through the FOCUS principles, for the Formulate part, I needed
to come up with an idea of what I wanted to take a picture of. I thought it best to see what was avail-
able for me to take pictures of before I could come up with an idea of what I wanted my photodesign
to be. I went to the green house in the Benson building and started organizing what I wanted it to
look like by seeing the dierent thing available to me. After I picked a picture of a turtle and decidedwhat kind of quote I wanted to go with it, I added contrast by choose colors that were in contrast to
each other for the quote. Also, these colors worked to unify the whole image because the colors relat-
ed to the picture. I then simplied by making the design simple with not too much noise to bring it all
together.

Letter Head
Description:
This is a design for a potential future business’
letter head
Date:
2-28-16
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 01/Visual Media
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
-Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
-Create a new logo to t a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous
designs. Don’t use photos or live trace.
-Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a letterhead. Photos are okay on letterhead as addi-tional design elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125.
-Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
-Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.
-Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece. Use periods,
bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.
Process:
The start of this process comes to making a logo, I wanted something that would be simple, circular,
and maybe something that could represent pools of water. When I came up with the logo seen above in
illustrator, one of my friends commented on it saying it looked like that process when two cells divide,
and mistook the word mitosis, for osmosis and even though he was wrong, the word sounded like it
would work. After making the logo, I brought the logo from illustrator and moved it into indesign.
From there I started to create a layout of how I wanted the card to look. Once I picked colors that
contrasted each other, I moved onto the next step and moved those colors and fonts over and created
my letter head, thus unifying all of my elements. Afterwards, I had to simplify by changing some of thecolors.

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word
Objectives:
-Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
-Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
-Create a full-bleed design.
-Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
-Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.
Process:
The only program that was used for this ier was word. Formulating the project was done by coming
up with an idea of what I wanted my charity event to be about. Since I love super heroes and I adored
action gures as a child, thats what I wanted mine to be based on. Organize started when I went to
the Library to nd certain pictures in book s that related to superheroes. Then I had to start organizing
what would go on the ier. Contrast came in when I had to pick certain colors to contrast the main
colors that I had already picked. And change the number “1” to contrast on the red. Unify happened
when I found that happy medium and all the colors worked together with the picture that I had cho-
sen. Simplify came when I was choosing how to best get the message across to the audience

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
-Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.-Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic ier layout.
-Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.
Process:
The rst part of the process of making this ier was formulating what I wanted in it. I sketched outfour dierent ideas that helped me visualize what I wanted to be the end image. After making four
dierent sketches, I organized my favorite ideas into one draft that was created by using Indesign.
I put certain characteristics in my design that created a form of contrast, mostly by using dierent
values of blacks, grays and white space, but I also unied by repeating certain creative elements in
my design. Lastly, after letting some of my peers critique my work, I simplied some aspects of it and
sent it out for a nal print.
