Marketing Mayhem – Will You Be Going for the Gold? By Larry T. Seel, CPSM

“Going for the Gold in a Tarnished Economy” is the theme chosen for this year’s Marketing Mayhem half-day educational program, which features a lineup of renowned speakers addressing topics designed to help your firm maximize its marketing efforts in a time when most firms have been forced to do more with less.

The featured speaker for this year’s Mayhem is David Stone, founder of A/E/C marketing consulting firm Stone and Company. David has been working in the design and construction industry since 1974 and has advised and worked closely with hundreds of design and construction firms around the globe ranging in size from one person to $2 billion in annual revenue. He is the author of 12 books related to marketing, business development and project management, and he is a regular speaker at design and construction industry gatherings around the world. David will lead a session titled “Show Your Firm What Marketing Can Really Do to Boost Business” as well as delivering the keynote address to all attendees.

This year’s Mayhem will feature a Project Management track for more experienced marketers and firm principals and a Coordinator track for those seeking to build their marketing skills. Register early for the opportunity to choose the sessions you want to participate in, as space may be limited.

Other featured speakers include Barbara Shuck of EMC2 Group Architects and Planners, who will be sharing insights she gained while writing a recent SMPS Foundation White Paper entitled “Social Networking for Competitive Advantage.” Marketing consultant and “Power Principles” author Jeb Blount will speak on “Sharpening Your Tools to Become a More Valuable Employee.” Finally, we will convene a panel of local clients from the government and private sector (including representatives from the City of Orlando and Seminole County Public Schools) to discuss best practices in proposal and presentation writing as well as what it takes to win in today’s competitive market.

Following David Stone’s keynote address, the Mayhem will continue with a Networking/Happy Hour event. Registration will include one complimentary drink ticket.

Marketing Mayhem will be held on Thursday, May 27 at the Hilton-Orlando hotel in Altamonte Springs. Members can attend the full Mayhem program for just $65, or you may choose to attend just the Keynote Address and Happy Hour for $40. Registration is available online at www.acteva.com//booking.cfm?bevaid=203145.

For more information on Mayhem, please contact Larry Seel at [email protected]. Hope to see you there!

SMPS Central Florida is Partnering with Harbor House of Central Florida to Help Them Stand Up Against Domestic ViolenceDid you know Orange County had the second highest number of domestic violence incidents in the state, second only to Miami Dade despite being the 5th largest county? The statistics are staggering with over 100,000 victimizations a year.

Harbor House seeks to eliminate domestic violence in Central Florida by providing safety, shelter, empowerment, education and justice. Harbor House provides safe shelter, a 24-hour crisis hotline, counseling, and emotional support, and legal advocacy for thousands of domestic violence survivors and their children each year. Harbor House also prepares survivors for re-entry into the community - connecting them to resources that will enable them to live independently, safely and peacefully.

During the 1970s - when talking about abuse was taboo - Barbara Moore, a domestic violence survivor realized the need for victims’ assistance programs in Orange County. Taking it upon herself to assist other victims in need, she assembled a small group of committed women and together they established Central Florida’s first domestic violence shelter - known today as Harbor House.

Over time, Harbor House has evolved and grown to meet the needs of Orange County. But, it has always remained true to its core values: empowerment, peace and advocacy.

Today, Harbor House is Orange County’s only state-certified domestic violence facility.

How You Can Help - Bring Your Old Cell Phone to Any SMPS Event! In 2007-08, 7,279 calls were received on Harbor House’s 24-hour hotline. Imagine the relief that survivors may feel, as a dedicated 911 phone rests in their pocket or purse. Your used cell phones could provide them with that security.

We will be collecting cell phones (working or broken) at all SMPS events throughout the year. Through the donation of these phones, Harbor House receives money per phone and each victim receives a dedicated 911 phone.

How You Can Help - Volunteer to Help Move Into The New Children’s Center! In Summer 2010, a new children’s center will be opening on the Harbor House campus. Forty-five percent of Harbor House residents are children. This new facility will enable allow school aged children a place to safely attend school. It will also serve as a day care for smaller children. The facility also has a new industrial kitchen and multipurpose room for the kids to have hot meals and play time.

We do not have an exact move date yet, but if you are interested in volunteering for this effort, please e-mail Erica Fox at [email protected].
