WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE OLD AND

NEW SATSEPTEMBER 28 2015

The College Board announces to overhaul the SAT test in a move to grant more oppor-tunities to test-takers. David Coleman, the president of College Board, stated, “Students will no longer be expected to learn fancy new skills”. He mentioned that the revamped SAT test will evaluate students’ basic academic skills. Following are some of the primary changes.

Who’s still adhering to the “traditional SAT”?Despite the overt advantage of taking a new SAT, several SPAS students are studying the old SAT, aiming for the highest score they can possibly get. “I got only a week left until the SAT test, and I study with the anxiety and nervousness as if I am encountering a huge barricade while skateboarding”, said Paul Yim. Paul Yim, one of the few 4.0 GPA SPAS students, will take the old SAT in October, November, December, and January at BISS. He usually studies at the school dormitory with the College Board official SAT study guide. Paul commented, “I really wanted to give up studying SAT and felt shame upon myself when I got twelve questions wrong few days ago”. This quote lucidly demon-strates the anxiety students have. He studies the SAT because he wants to attend Hong Kong University; this college requires the score of 1,800 at minimum.

The essay section will be optional.

The exam time will be reduced to three hours.

Only four answer choices for the reading sections.

Furthermore, Alison Parker, a “rock star” reporter, was shot to death while conducting an on-air interview at a shopping district near Moneta, Virginia; moreover, Adam Ward, a camera man, was shot to death. “I cannot tell you how much they were loved, Alison and Adam, by the WDBJ7 team,” Jeff Marks, the general manager of station, said in a senti-mental state on air. “Our hearts are broken.” Vicki Gardner, executive director of the smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Com-merce, was a third victim in the shooting. She was shot in the back and underwent emergen-cy surgery. Due to gruesome incidents above and other similar problems, proponents of gun control assert that stronger laws can prevent the need-less loss of life.

October 26th 2015

Nowadays, debates concerning gun control have polarized public opinion in America.

First of all, two well-known instances show the consequences of inappropriate usage of guns that boiled over.

The shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown occurred on August 9, in Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Darren Wilson, 28, a white Ferguson police officer, shot the unarmed teenager from a distance, but it was unclear whether Brown was surrendering or threatening Wilson. The unclear circumstances of Brown’s death, the resulting nationwide protests, and police forces’ perceived overreaction to the protests all led to a series of national debate about law enforcement’s treatment of citizens, especially African-Americans, in the United States. In fact, this event brought thousands of protesters all over the streets to make a statement against racial profiling and police brutality.

TYPHOON HITS THE PHILIPINES OCTOBER 26 2015

A typhoon, by the name of Koppu, has taken its toll not only on

the lives of people, but also on the infrastructure and agriculture of the Philippines. Estimates show that there is at least 43 casualties caused by the typhoon. About 78 are injured, and about a 100,000 have taken refugee to shelters. Koppu struck the island of Luzon, the most populous and largest island of Philipine, inundating thousands of houses. Damages caused by the typhoon is the equivalent of $160 million.

The ragged, 35km eye became sharper, and Kop-pu was officially upgraded as a super typhoon by JTWC, the Join Typhoon Warning Center. Koppu's maximum sustained winds getting to a maximum 240km per hour. The typhoon finally came to an end at October 21st, when unfavorable environmental conditions made the system unstable and ultimately dwindled, only to become a tropical depression. Foreign aid and support was provided from countries like Australia, whose government offered support to reliefs. Australian foreign Julie Bishop gave $1 million for supporting damagedfamilies.

Europe's Migrant CrisisSeptember 26th 2015

WHAT IS AN IN-SERVICE DAY

On October 16th, Saint Paul American School students had a day off, which no students had a clue on why. In-service day? In-service day is basically a teacher training and staff meeting day, where teachers gather around learning better ways on how to educate. Teachers are updated with new technologies that they may use in class. Why does this matter to us? This day of skill building for teachers is essentially a day devoted for students like us. What really makes an impact on students' academic and overall achievement is well trained teachers. A day of teachers and faculty members meeting for generally a better education has not so much an impact on them than it has on us. Our teachers here at Saint Paul American school said that at In-service day, they were also updated with new technologies such as the new tablets we may use starting next year. Usually, schools in America has 5 in-service days during term time.

This image of a 3 year old boy's dead body was found at the shore of turkey, after fleeing from Syria with his family, when they tried to cross the borderlines of Tur-key, but only the father survived. This image galvanized the world, permeating through the media through SNS and the internet. People are once again acknowl-edging what's actually happen-ing in Europe with migrants. Especially migrants from Syria, where a civil war broke out. An-ti-government forces of Syria are against Bashar al-Assad, the cur-rent president of Syria who was the heir of Ḥāfiẓ al-Assad, whos succession of pow-er was hereditary. The civil war broke out when some teen-agers were taken into custody be-cause of their graffiti of anti-dictatorship slogans were drawn on the wall. People demand-ed the release of these teenagers, protesting to the government. A new report from the UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agen-cy, says that more than 2,500 mi-grants and refugees have died or

gone missing this year while cross-ing the Mediterranean Sea, seeking a new life. Even when one does sur-vive, living in Europe is still full of danger. One of the biggest problems with coping with these migrants is that they have no place to go. Since there can only be so much migrants in a country. One of the concocted plans suggests a quota system for this reason, where they limit the amount of migrants coming in a country. A vote showed few countries that op-posed the quota system, which made them obligated to take some amount of refugees themselves. But peoples' backlash of migrants,

having no place to stay, and always moving around is

making migrants' life in Europe miserable. Eu-rope is finding its way to cope in the best fashion possible with these migrants.
