THE EARTH’S GRID SYSTEM

MODULE 13

PAGES115-124

• Prime Meridian is the imaginary line passing

through Greenwich, England.

•The Prime Meridian is the meridian (line of

longitude) at which longitude is defined to be 0°.

•Lines run from North pole to the South Pole

crossing the equator is called Meridians

•The equator is the intersection of the Earth's

surface with the plane perpendicular to the

Earth's axis of rotation and containing the Earth's

center of mass.

•The equator divides the planet into a

Northern Hemisphere and a

Southern Hemisphere, and has a latitude of 0°.

Terms to Remember

•Longitude is the distance from any

point east or west of the prime

meridian.

•Latitude, are the horizontal lines

shown running east-to-west on maps.

Technically, latitude is an

angular measurement in degrees

(marked with °) ranging from 0° at the

equator (low latitude) to 90° at the

poles (90° N for the North Pole or 90°

S for the South Pole; high latitude).

The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line on the surface of the Earth opposite the Prime Meridian which offsets the date as one

travels east or west across it.

Roughly along 180° longitude, with diversions to pass around some territories and island groups, it

mostly corresponds to the time zone boundary separating +12 and −12 hours GMT (UT1).

Crossing the IDL traveling east results in a day or 24 hours being subtracted, and crossing west

results in a day being added.

The east and west longitude lines meet at the 180 degree meridian, this line is called the international

date line.

1. A time zone is a longitudinal belt of the earth in which all

areas have the same local time.

2. The time it takes the sun to appear and reappear in the same

place in the sky is called a solar day.

3. The regular rotation of the earth is our best telling of time.

4. The Earth rotates a total of 360 degree every 24 hours or

every day. If the total rotates of the earth in every hour is 15

degree.

5. The country have the different time because they have

different time zone as you can see in globe. The time of the

different country depend on the time zone they have or locate

in the globe.

Time Zones

24 hours was divided into 2 sets of 12 hours.

The first 12 hours last from midnight to noon and the second 12 hours lasts from noon to midnight.

The change of date is made at midnight.

When it is noon at the prime meridian is O degree.

It is midnight at 180 degree.
