What is PBIS?

1

Page 2: P ositive B ehavioral i nterventions & S upports

PBIS is a framework of thinking about discipline and behavior for all students built around the themes of defining expectations, teaching students expected behaviors, systematically rewarding positive behavior, using clear and consistent consequences for misbehavior, and use of data to making decisions about school-wide discipline and individual student problems.

TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF REFERRALS FOR:

1. Tardies and truancies2. Insubordination3. ID violations4. Electronic Device violations

3

Page 4: P ositive B ehavioral i nterventions & S upports

The PBIS Committee along with the building administrators looked at the discipline data from the last year.

These specific areas were chosen because they had some of the highest number of referrals.

40 referrals per day Aug. 08 to 60 referrals per day Aug. 09

60 referrals per day Sept. 08 to 90 per day Sept. 09

What does this mean?

With stricter discipline procedures, the numbers will show that there are more referrals this year than last year. Congrats on following procedure this year!!!

Tardiness ranges from 2 referrals per day in Aug. 08 to 12 Aug. 09.

Tardiness ranges from 10 referrals per day in Sept. 08 to 30 per day in Sept. 09.

With the stricter consequences, this is normal for the referral rate to spike due to students receiving 2nd and 3rd tardy warnings.

Truancy ranged from 4 referrals per day in Aug. 08 to 17 in Aug. 09.

Truancy ranges from 9 referrals per day in Sept. 08 to 17 in Sept. 09.

Truancy has not increased so far this year due to the larger volume of calls home.

The ultimate goal would be for the number of referrals to plateau by the end of the semester.

With full implementation of PBIS, the number of referrals should begin dropping next semester.
