AND NOW A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR….
Excuses…excuses…excuses. For about two years I must have come up with
more than a few excuses why I wasn’t able to participate in an ACTS retreat that
several men of our parish were encouraging me to do. Granted it does get busy
around here sometime. Granted it’s hard to get a rent-a-priest even when given
enough notice. Granted I have a special attachment and loyalty to the Holy Name
Retreat Center and our men’s yearly retreat there. Granted I didn’t want to be away
too long from Bridget….though, now that I think about it, that was really a lame
excuse. She drives me crazy! I would even cringe when I saw one of ‘those ACTS guys’ coming. I
finally relented and agreed to participate in the ACTS retreat that was to be held at the Cenacle in
Houston on a weekend in July. I was to be a participant not the priest-moderator during the retreat.
I went with the mantras ‘this is going to be good’ and ‘it’s only for a few days’ and ‘offer it up’. I
realize now that participating in the retreat and experiencing the intense process of spiritual renewal
was definitely the right way to be introduced to ACTS. A few weeks ago, I was the priest-moderator of
our men’s retreat jointly led by a combined team of Sacred Heart parishioners and our parishioners of
St. Mary. It was held outside Tomball at a wonderful Lutheran retreat center that I didn’t even know
existed.
I didn’t realize how much preparation the ACTS team puts into making each retreat a memora-
ble and spiritually uplifting opportunity for the retreatants. Our ACTS team of twenty dedicated guys
met an evening a week for ten weeks prior to the retreat. Every aspect of the retreat was planned and
rehearsed so those on retreat wouldn’t be distracted by a disorganized presentation or schedule. The
facility where the retreat was held was checked out thoroughly. Details for a successful and meaningful
retreat were meticulously worked out, including the menu for each meal and snacks and drinks availa-
ble 24/7. Each team member had a specific role to play during the retreat and performed his role with
sincerity and humility. I find it hard to find the words to express how proud I am of each team member
and how indebted to them for their enthusiasm and joy in being channels of God’s touching those on
retreat.
Many aspects of the retreat are secret or, to put it another way, not discussed with the
retreatants. The reason is not that it is some kind of cult experience, but to give each retreatant a
profound and unexpected ‘wow!’. As someone who has participated in an ACTS retreat, I can affirm
it’s a big ‘WOW’!. I am also pleased that the ACTS retreat is a once in a lifetime spiritual journey that
is taken up again in our annual Men’s Retreat at the Holy Name Retreat Center in Houston. They are
not in competition with one another. Each is a very different spiritual experience, our annual Men’s
Retreat building on what was experienced in ACTS.
I would encourage all you guys who are looking to figure out where you are in your faith or
deepen an already active faith to seriously consider an ACTS retreat. It’s one of those things you can
always find an excuse to put off or just dismiss. Let me assure you that, if you take the step and commit
to an ACTs retreat and go, you’ll find yourself rewarded, your family life improved and your relation-
ship to the Lord and the Church and parish strengthened. What more could you ask….?

Of all the gifts given to mankind by God, there is none greater than the presence of the Holy Spirit. While all receive the grace of the Holy Spirit at Baptism, the Sacrament of Confirmation confirms and strengthens baptismal grace. “The effect of Confirmation is a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit like that of Pentecost. This outpouring impresses on the soul an indelible character and produces a growth in the grace of Baptism. It roots the recipient more deeply in divine sonship, binds him more firmly to Christ and to the Church, and reinvigorates the gifts of the Holy Spirit in his/her soul, giving a special strength to witness to the Christian faith” [Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #268]. Pope Francis explains the gift of the Holy Spirit: “The Holy Spirit is the soul of mission….the supreme gift of the risen Christ to his apostles, yet he wants that gift to reach everyone….Jesus says: “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to re-main with you forever” (Jn 14:16). It is the Paraclete Spirit, the “Comforter,” who grants us the courage to take to the streets of the world, bringing the Gospel! The Holy Spirit makes us look to the horizon and drives us to the very outskirts of existence in order to proclaim life in Jesus Christ. Let us ask ourselves: do we tend to stay closed in on ourselves, on our group, or do we let the Holy Spirit open us to mission?”

John the Baptist is the voice that cries out to us an Advent message: “Repent, for the king-
dom of heaven is at hand!” He focused his whole life on the coming of Jesus. “I am not the
Christ. Another comes after me. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
John realized that his all-consuming
vocation was to prepare the way of the Lord. Our
vocation is very similar. St. Vincent tells us that the
person of Jesus must be absolutely central in our lives,
as it was for John the Baptist. As Vincentians we
dedicate our whole lives to following Christ. We seek
to share in his love and reverence for the Father and
his compassionate and effective love for the poor.
With him we trust in God’s Providence, which rules
over all. For Vincentians, as for John the Baptist,
there is nothing else but Jesus. (Mahoney, Seasons
in Spirituality, p.47)

Before I turn to two other topics, I would like to thank many of our parishioners for the
great response I received after my recent accident. On October 27th I fell and badly bruised my
back; after many X-rays, a C-scan and God only knows what else, the good doctors at Conroe
Regional Hospital sent me home with pain killers and the assurance that I’d be OK – my bruised ribs would heal “in
a few months or so!” When the word got around, I was inundated with food, cards, telephone calls and visits. I
greatly thank all of those who were so kind. As Fr. Ed often says, this truly is a wonderful parish filled with great
fellow parishioners. Be assured of my prayers; I have celebrated Mass for you all and will continue to remember
you in my prayers.
There was a second reason I was disappointed I was not able to celebrate Mass that weekend; the gospel
[Luke 19:1-10] was one of my favorites. It was about Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector. Tax collectors back then
were not very popular for they actually “bought” their positions from the Romans and were then allowed to keep for
themselves whatever “extra” they could get from the people. Zacchaeus was thus a very wealthy man. One day he heard that Jesus was passing through the region and he wanted to see this famous rabbi himself. But that wealthy
man knew the people would not help him and, being “short in stature,” he was afraid he would not even get to see
Jesus. But Zacchaeus was determined; he ran ahead of the crowd and climbed a sycamore tree just to be able to see
Him. Thus when Jesus finally came walking by, there was Zacchaeus, sitting on a branch, peering through the
leaves, all in his attempt to get at least a glimpse of this Jesus of Nazareth. But then, something wondrous happened
that must have shocked Zacchaeus. Instead of his just getting a glimpse of Jesus, our Lord also saw him and called
out: “Zacchaeus, come down quickly for today I must stay at your house.”
Zacchaeus was amazed; he was filled with joy that Jesus had not only noticed him, but had also singled him
out, called him by name, and was even going to visit his home. In short that little, wealthy Zacchaeus became a
central part of that gospel passage. And, you know, I believe he can also play a large role in our lives of faith. He
challenges us to seek to see Who Jesus is, to know Him better, to serve Him more faithfully, and to love Him more
deeply. He challenges each of us to examine our lives to see whether or not we are like that little man. For exam-
ple, Zacchaeus “received Jesus with joy.” We too need to ask ourselves: “Is my relationship with Jesus marked by
such joy?” ..... or is it fear or indifference that stands at the center of my relationship with Him ..... with Jesus Who
continues to “come to seek and to save what was lost?” Each of us needs, like Zacchaeus, to make room in our
hearts and in our minds for Jesus to stay at our house ..... just as He stayed that day with Zacchaeus.
A few weeks ago we celebrated All Saints’ Day when we prayed for the Saints’ intercession ..... praying that
we might imitate them by living lives which will end in the glory of heaven. For me, Zacchaeus would be a good
addition to all our prayers ..... perhaps praying something as simple as: "O Holy Zacchaeus, pray for me.”
And now to my third point: This December bulletin will be distributed on the first Sunday of the upcoming
Advent season. Shortly after I arrived in Texas thirty-one years ago, I was helping on the First Sunday of Advent at
St. Edward’s Church in Spring. Their pastor, Fr. Al Doga, surprised me when he asked me to begin each Mass that
day as did he ..... with a hearty greeting of “Happy New Year”. At first I was more than just a bit perplexed, but that
day I came to appreciate his rather “unique” opening for the Masses that weekend.
“Happy New Year” is truly a fitting greeting for the first Sunday of Advent for that Sunday is the beginning
of a new Church year. It begins annually on the fourth Sunday before we celebrate Christ’s birth on Christmas day.
The Advent season urges each of us to focus on the coming of our Lord in the manger in Bethlehem. [In fact the
actual word “advent” comes from the Latin “adventus” which means “a coming.”] Just as we remember the Jewish
people who waited for so many centuries for their Savior’s coming, so too now we joyously await His two-fold
coming ..... first as the child of Mary on Christmas day and, secondly, in His coming at the end of time.
In our churches and hopefully in our homes we traditionally have Advent wreaths; they are shaped as a
circle symbolizing the perfection of God. On this wreath there are four candles to symbolize both the four Sundays
of Advent and the four virtues of Hope, Love, Joy and Peace which Jesus brings us. Three of these are normally purple while the fourth is pink, representing the Joy with which we will celebrate our Lord’s two comings.
During this Advent season, as the light of the wreath becomes brighter and brighter each Sunday, I pray each
of us will attempt also to grow in readiness ..... both to celebrate His birth and to welcome Him at His Second
Coming at the end of time. Simply put, that light represents Christ Who was born as God/man to scatter the
darkness of evil and to show us the way to righteousness and joy in the glory of heaven with Him for eternity.

RCIA “The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” is the process of educational formation and spiritual
formation by which adults become full members in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Formation
classes are presently underway on Sunday’s in the Family Life Center and the RCIA calendar is posted on St. Mary’s
web site, www.smsj.org, under “grow in faith”. We invite all those who are not baptized, those who are baptized in
other faiths and those baptized in the Catholic faith that would like to increase their knowledge in Catholicism.

A Journey Through Church History
This fast paced 10-week study of the first 500 years of our church history will begin Thurs.,
January 19th and end Thurs., March 30th (with a make up day on April 6th if necessary). No clas-
ses on Thursday, March 16th due to Spring Break. The classes will be in the Hall with a
morning class at 10am and an evening class at 7pm. Cost of the workbook will be $22 payable
when you receive your workbook. The work-books need to be ordered on Mon., December 19th to insure they will be available in time be-

Fall Report
It was a supper Fall! We were part of 367 cities and
communities throughout the world. All together, we
saved 872 babies and just as many mothers and
families! And 8 abortion workers quite the
industry!
Since it began in College Station in 2004 the
numbers of new lives saved and rescued are:
12,688 babies saved—that we know of.
75 abortion facilities CLOSED for good after a 40
Days for Life vigil.
141 abortion workers have quit “the industry.”
Way to go mighty Prayer Warriors!

Guided by the Holy Spirit the SMSJ Men’s ACTS retreat was an exceptional weekend for all it touched. To the men in attendance, God has blessed us with your courage to accept His call to gather, break bread together and share at His table. To the families of the men on retreat and to the community of St. Mary’s / St. Joseph’s, thank you for your many prayers and gathering togeth-er in joy-filled fellowship. To the team of men from: St. Mary’s / St. Joseph’s parish, Sacred Heart parish, St. Anthony of Padua parish, St. Simon and Jude parish, and Prince of Peace parish, thank you so much for your time and talents in service, bringing the message of ACTS to St. Mary’s / St Joseph’s parish. Are you interested in bringing back a lost art? Are you interesting in having a good
time with a great group of ladies? Think about joining the Stitchin’ Sisters. Hand
quilting seems to be a lost art that we are trying to keep alive. We are a group of ladies
that hand quilts three donation quilts a year. One for the Plantersville Fire Department
Auction, one for St. Joseph Bazaar Auction and one for St. Mary’s Bazaar Auction.
If time permits between those quilts, we will quilt member’s quilt for a nominal fee.
If you do not know how to quilt, we will do our best to help you out. We all have
opinions! We can show you how to put up a quilt on a frame, how to mark it, how to
quilt it, and how to finish it. We meet every Wednesday from 9:30 to 2:00 at St. Joseph
Hall. Bring your own lunch. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!
