1:1 Initiative – Chromebooks The Morgan County Schools 1:1 Initiative gives students the tools to have instant access to the world of information. The goal in 2017-2018 school year is to provide 6th-8th grade students with a Chromebook and power cord. There will be a $40.00 fee collected for the Lenovo laptop devices. The balance will be used to obtain an Accidental Damage Policy through the Morgan County School System, The Accidental Damage Policy will cover cost to repair or replace laptops for accidental damage that occurs during the course of the students’ use of the laptops. Any cost to repair or replace laptops for intentional misuse or otherwise avoidable damages will become the responsibility of the student. TRUANCY DEFINITION A parent, guardian, or other person having charge of any child officially enrolled in Alabama public schools (K-12) shall explain IN WRITING the cause of any and every absence of the child no later than THREE SCHOOL DAYS following return to school. NO EMAILS WILL BE ALLOWED AS AN EXCUSE. A failure to furnish such explanation shall be evidence of the child being truant each day he/she is absent. The child shall also be deemed truant for any absence determined by the principal to be unexcused. First truancy/unexcused absence: The school principal or his/her designee shall notify parent/guardian, by phone or letter, that the student was truant and the date of the truancy. The letter sent is used countywide with the principal’s signature for each school. Fifth unexcused absence: The parent, guardian or person having control of the child shall (1) attend a conference with the attendance officer and principal or his/her designee and/or (2) participate in the early warning program provided by the juvenile court. Attendance at one of these conferences shall be mandatory except where prior arrangements have been made or an emergency exists. Failure to appear at the school conference and/or to appear at the early warning program shall result in the filing of a complaint/petition against the parent under (Code of Alabama 1975), s16-28-12 (C)(failure to cooperate), or s12-15-13(contributing to truancy) or a truancy against the child, whichever is appropriate. Seventh unexcused absence: File complaint/petition, with the court system, against the child and/or parent/guardian.

ATTENDANCE - CHECK INS If your child is late to school, not in class by 7:50 a.m., he/she must have parent bring a legitimate excuse at that time of the tardy to the main office, otherwise it is an unexcused tardy. Your child must also sign in with the secretary before he/she goes to class. All check-ins will occur in the main office in the east building..

ATTENDANCE - CHECK OUTS

Parents must come to the school to check a student out. Parents may not call the school and give permission for their child to checked out nor can they send faxes or emails. A parent may come to the office and pre-sign a student out for later that day. It is very important that you fill the checkout card if you plan on other adults checking your child out. The checkout card is bright orange. If you have an older child at the high school, please include their name on the checkout card if you intend on the sibling checking the junior high student out. All checkouts will occur in the east building.

ATHLETES Athletes must be in attendance at school at least half the day to be able to participate in athletic games or practices that afternoon. This equals to being at school for 3 hours and 40 minutes in all.

FIELDTRIPS Participating in a field trip is a privilege not a given so there are certain requirements in order to attend a field trip. Students with a failing grade in any class or over 3 disciplines will not be allowed to participate in a field trip. The disciplines include electronic devices. Suspension from school is an automatic disqualification from attending a field trip for the year. Field Trips do not count as absences if they are school related. Because your child is not considered absent, they are responsible for any work that they miss due to being gone on the field trip. Students must turn in assignments on the original due date, they are not given extra time to make up work. Students must get their assignments prior to being gone on the field trip so that they can turn the assignments in when due. If you have any questions about field trips, please call Mary Speegle.

GRADES In junior high, the first semester and second semester averages are added up and divided by 2. A sixty or better results in a promotion to the next grade. Each semester consist of two nine-week periods. Exams are given at the end of each semester for 6th - 8th grades. Exams can be exempted based on NWEA Map Assessment Growth.. Students that do not achieve an overall yearly average of 60 will have to complete an online credit recovery program, Edmentum, at a cost of $200.00 per course failed, up to two courses. If a student fails more than 2 courses, they are automatically retained. ALL MAKE UP TESTS ARE ADMINISTERED BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL, NEVER DURING THE SCHOOL DAY. STUDENTS/PARENTS MUST MAKE PLANS WITH THE TEACHER TO SET UP A TIME TO MAKE UP THE TEST MISSED.

PROGRESS REPORTS

Progress reports are sent out the fourth/fifth week of each nine-week period. Parents can check their child’s grades, discipline, teacher comments, and other information at any time using INOW. Please refer to INOW login directions for steps to log onto INOW.

TRIPS OR VACATIONS

Parents, please get absences pre-approved by Mrs. Speegle for vacations/family trips that are several days. Assignments can be collected beforehand, so your child will not fall too far behind in their work. If students have excessive absences, the principal will not pre-approve/excuse the absence. The principal will not pre-approve trips that land on days of NWEA Map Assessments or State Assessments. IMPORTANT: Morgan County Schools Policies are strictly enforced

To the Parents and Students: Every school in Morgan County needs to be consistent and

follow not only Morgan County Board Policy but also the Morgan County Student Handbook.

DRESS CODE RULES: Parents, please read the Morgan County Student Handbook about dress

code. Be diligent in understanding about dress code. The responsibility of the administration is to make sure that a student’s dress does not distract or prevent learning in the classroom. It is the administration’s final decision on what is out of dress code. For example, if a male student is wearing a tank top, he is considered out of dress code. If a female‘s shirt is exposing too much skin, this is out of dress code. In the end, if you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Speegle or Mrs. Turrentine. Athletic shorts are not allowed by any grade, all shorts must hit midways down thigh.

Students shall not wear sunglasses inside the school building or on the bus. Students shall not wear anything on their heads at any time during the school day, this includes outside unless it is cold weather.

UNNECESSARY ITEMS AT SCHOOL: Students are not permitted to bring articles that are not needed for their regular class work. This includes material which could be valuable, disruptive, or dangerous, such as: cell phones, radios, I-pods, MP3’s, earphones, CD’s, laser pointers, fidget spinners or other items deemed disruptive or inappropriate by the principal. If cell phones are detected during regular school hours and on the bus, the phones can be collected.

COMPUTER USE AND ACCESS: Computers are available for

students to use in both the library and the computer lab. Teachers giving assignments that require computers will give ample class time for the assignment to be completed. Students may not under any circumstances use school computers to check their email, facebook, or to down load games or music. Make sure to read the Morgan County Handbook for computer usage and sign/return the form. Students will not touch a computer if this form is not returned.

HOLES IN PANTS & PAJAMA PANTS: If holes are in pants, they must be located at the knee level and below and must be purchased from the vendor with the holes. We do not provide tape to cover holes nor do boxers or tights under the holes suffice. Students will have to call parents to bring more pants and will sit in ISS until the pants are delivered or the student can go to ISS for the day. Please consider this before purchasing pants with holes in them. Pajama pants are strictly prohibited except for special occasions (e.g. homecoming week).

ADVISORY The advisory initiative assigns every student at PJHS an adult mentor. Advisory time is 15 minutes beginning every day at 7:50. Your child’s advisor provides homework help, as well, as help with other issues. Your child’s advisor will contact you throughout the year with the first contact being a phone call. Advisors will contact parents every month, usually via email. Please provide the advisor with your contact information including your email. Please feel free to contact your child’s advisor any time you have a question or concern.

ASSEMBLIES

Each grade needs to sit with their own grade level during assemblies. The fifth grade sits on the west side at the end closest to the girl’s dressing room. The sixth grade sits on the west side of the gym closest to the lobby. The seventh grade sits on the east side closest to the doors leading into the school hallway and the eighth grade will sit on the east side closest to the boy’s dressing room. When entering and exiting the gym, students must use the steps on the bleachers and not go up or down on the bleacher seats. Students will begin at the top of the bleachers and work their way down when entering for an assembly. Students will wait to be dismissed by the administration before exiting the bleachers.

BUS RIDERS Students wishing to ride a bus to another student’s house, or ride a bus other than their usual bus, must bring a note to the secretary’s office before school. This note must contain written permission from the parent and a number where a parent or guardian can be reached. The student must return to the office for the note before getting on the bus. Bus permission will not be accepted over the phone. Bus drivers will not allow a student on their bus without this note.

FORGOTTEN ITEMS Please do not ask the administration to interfere with classroom learning to deliver items forgotten at home and delivered by the parent. Items brought in by the parent will be put in the office for the student to pick up between classes or after school.

COUNSELING PROGRAMS PJHS offers a grief-counseling group that meets monthly and involves students that have experienced a loss in their family. PJHS also offers a conflict resolution program that meets with students that have difficulty controlling their emotions and actions. Teachers refer students to these programs, but PJHS also appreciates parent referrals. Call the counselor, Kelly Gates, at 256-355-5104.

DRUG TESTING All students competing in extra-curricular activities at the high school level will be subject to drug testing according to the guidelines set in the Morgan County School’s Handbook.

EMERGENCY/ILLNESS INFORMATION/MEDICATION

It is very important to get the emergency card filled out, signed, and returned to the school as soon as possible. This card allows the nurse and/or emergency personnel to begin treatment as soon as possible if you cannot be reached. This information could mean the difference between life or death!!!

IMMUNIZATION (BLUE CARD) Your child needs to have an up to date immunization card. The immunization cards expire based on the age of the child. The school will notify you when immunizations are needed. All 6th graders must have the last T-dap shot before entering 6th grade. Contact the school nurse at 256-355-5104 to inquire about shots that are needed for your child to attend school. The blue card can be updated at your local health department or doctor’s office.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS Each year, the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) conducts an audit of student immunization records to ensure that children enrolled in Alabama schools are protected from vaccine-preventable diseases or have a valid exemption from vaccination. Documentation of vaccination and medical exemptions is contained on the Alabama Certificate of Immunization (also known as the Blue slip) or on an Alabama Certificate of Religious Exemption. During the course of the audit, an ADPH employee will check for appropriate vaccinations and a valid expiration date on the Blue Slip or for an appropriate exemption form if a child needs further vaccination or an updated certificate. The school will be notified at the completion of the audit. The ADPH employee keeps no identifying information about the child. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act mandates parental consent be obtained for persons not employed by this school to view the records of its students. If you DO NOT wish your child’s record to be evaluated by ADPH, please contact the school nurse at 256-355-5104. You will have to sign some paperwork at the school to deny access. No response from you will indicate that you will allow ADPH to audit immunization records of your child.

MEDICATIONS Any student who needs medication administered at school must have a parent or guardian bring that medicine (in the original container) to the school nurse and fill out a PPA form. A parent can administer medicine to their own child.

SCOLIOSIS SCREENING Every year, the school nurse will screen children at their school to check for scoliosis, a side-to-side curve in the spine. The purpose is to recognize, at the earliest stages, any deviation from normal so that the need for treatment can be determined. Annual scoliosis screening is now required, by law, for school children in the State of Alabama in grades 5 through 9 (ages 11-14), including special education students. If you have any questions concerning the scoliosis screening, please contact the school nurse at 256-355-5104.

FIRE/ WEATHER/SECURED PERIMETER DRILLS Fire, weather, and secured perimeter drills are practiced throughout the year. These drills are to be taken seriously. A series of bells will designate what kind of drill is occurring along with an announcement and the students will proceed as follows: Fire Drill: Students will proceed out of the building as instructed by their teachers. SUCCESSIVE RINGING OF BELLS. Tornado Drill: Students will proceed into the hallway, doubling up if necessary, and will face the wall. Students will get on their knees and lean forward, making sure their heads are down. ONE LONG RING. Secured Perimeter Drill: Students will remain in their classroom and will not be allowed to leave. They will remain quiet throughout the entire drill. When the secured perimeter mode has been announced, the doors are locked, the shades are pulled, electronic devices given to teacher, and lights are turned off. If drug dogs come on campus, there is always a secured perimeter until the canines leave. We do not contact parents unless there is a complete lockdown resulting from a dangerous situation on or around campus.

INCLEMENT WEATHER In the event that we have inclement weather, a tornado warning or severe storm warning is issued, the principal may choose to hold the buses until the all-clear bulletin is given. Parents may, of course, check their children out of school and transport them home. Remember all checkouts occur at the east/7th & 8th building. PJHS works with parents on days of expected severe weather: tornado or flooding threats.

FOOD AND DRINKS No outside food or drinks of any kind are allowed in the buildings before school. Students should finish eating or drinking before they get out of their parent’s car. You are allowed to purchase water and snacks at break to eat or drink in the main hallway: students may also bring items from home (drinks must be unopened). Students are not allowed to bring food or drink out of the lunchroom after breakfast or lunch time. Enough time is allotted to eat lunch, but social time is not included during this time. Therefore, eat first, talk later.

LUNCHROOM REQUIREMENTS Students in grades K-12 that have more than three charges in the lunchroom will be given an alternate lunch until his/her account is paid in full. It is not our intention that any child should be embarrassed. We will handle this in the most discreet manner possible. Your child should get in the habit of asking the lunchroom ladies how much they have in their account. You are welcome to call the Priceville lunchroom at 256-353-1960 to check your child’s account or to speak with one of the CNP workers. If you want to limit extra food purchased by your child, call Mrs. Bone at 256-309-2102 and she can block your child’s account. The PJHS lunchroom ladies do not have access to put a block on your child’s account. All ala carte items should be purchased with cash unless the parent contacts the CNP manager to let them know otherwise.

LOCKERS Students may not share lockers. Lockers are subject to inspection at any time by the principal. Parents, there have been incidences in the past where two students were sharing a locker and one of those students brought drugs or tobacco products which resulted in the suspension of both students. This is why it is so important that your child not share their locker or locker combination with anyone. Once combinations have been shared, that cannot be undone. Friends at the beginning of the year may not necessarily be friends at the end. Renting a locker is not required; however students may not carry their book bags or backpacks from class to class. Renting a locker is highly suggested. Lockers numbers are documented in INOW so no exchanging of lockers should occur. If you get a top locker and cannot reach or see the combination, go to the secretary’s office and she will start a list because there are always people that get bottom lockers that want to trade for top lockers.

SNACKS Snacks are sold after lunch during break. The prices of snacks range from $0.25 to $1.00. PJHS follows the nutritional guidelines required by schools. Students are allowed to bring a snack from home to eat and drink, but liquids need to be in a container with a screw on top.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES Electronic devices are utilized ONLY when the teacher instructs the students to bring the electronic devices to class. Devices cannot be used when there are substitute teachers in the classroom. Devices are not allowed in the hallway, walking to the buses, waiting on parents in the car line, or on the bus. Filming and picture taking is strictly prohibited and will result in the loss of device privileges. Parents, it would be a good idea to disable the video and picture capabilities. Many teachers have place called cell jails in their classrooms. When a teacher instructs their class to place all devices in the cell jail, students are required to place their devices in that cell jail. If a cell phone is found in a student’s possession in this case, that device will be confiscated and the PJHS device procedure takes place. Please remember that being allowed to have devices is a privilege and not a given. The school will not be held accountable for lost, stolen, or destroyed electronic devices. All students will be required to keep their devices in their lockers since there are Chromebooks in the 1:1 initiative.

NWEA MAP ASSESSMENTS: Parents, your child will be participating in an assessment called the Map Assessment. This assessment is a computer based assessment and is administered several times during the year. This is a formative type of assessment that identifies where a student is in his/her learning based on the new ACT Aspire test. It assesses how much improvement or growth he/she makes after PJHS has taught him/her. The assessment is used to show gains/growth in Reading and Math. PJHS uses this assessment to be proactive in your child’s academic success. This test is a precursor to the ACT taken in the eleventh grade. These assessments are referred to when making decisions about advanced classes. PJHS hopes to reward those students who work diligently on these assessments so that accurate results can be utilized for educational purposes.
