Sewing Machine*Buy a sewing machine that’s perfect for your budget and your sewingneeds.Do your research before you buy a sewing machine. Be sure to readany online reviews if any are available.
Your First ProjectOnly buy what you need for your first project. After you complete yourfirst sewing project you’ll be better equipped to decide if you’ll besewing longterm.Start and finish your first sewing project before starting any futureprojects.Use the knowledge you gain from your first project to successfullycomplete your future projects.
Sewing ToolsBuy and use the correct sewing tools for the job you need to do to savetime and money.Buy at least 2 (or more) seam rippers you will use them very, veryoften and they tend to disappear when you need them most.Hide your fabric scissors from your family!

Measurement Taking*
Get help taking your measurements from a family member or friend, ifyou can.Use the measurement taking guide/class from Threads Magazine orCraftsy if you don't know anything about measurement taking and/orhave to take your own measurements.
Sewing PatternsBuy sewing patterns according to your measurements, not your readytowear size.Choose a pattern that doesn’t require you to make major alterations.Choose a pattern style created for sewing beginners.Learn how to read a sewing patternUse the fabric suggestions on the back of your pattern as a guide whenchoosing fabric for your project.
FabricPrepare your fabric and any lining or interfacing, etc., before cutting outyour garment by washing or dry cleaning it. Follow the care instructionslisted on the fabric bolt in the fabric store.Choose a fabric that’s easy to cut and sew doesn’t require a specialpattern layout, seam finish or advanced sewing technique.

Pattern Markings, Instruction and Terminology*
Use your tape measure to measure from the grainline of your patternpiece to the selvage of your fabric to make sure the pattern piece isstraight.Follow the sewing instructions of your pattern and wait until you gainmore sewing experience before taking shortcuts.Learn sewing terminology as you learn to sew.
PressingPress your seams before they’re joined to any other seams. Sew as many seams as you can (that are not joined) and press themall at the same time.
Sew for HireSew for others only after you’ve given yourself plenty of time to learnthe basics of sewing.Sew for others only after you are equipped to charge what your timeand skill level are worth.Beware when people tell you the project is "simple" or "easy". They donot sew and really don't know the work it takes to create handmadeitems.

Taking Shortcuts
Follow your pattern's instructions to the letter when you're learning tosew. Don't try to take shortcuts until after you gain sewing experience. Take the shortcuts that don’t jeopardize the quality of your garment andmake it look homemade.
Take a Break
Take a break from your project whenever you need to.Don't allow sewing challenges to frustrate you to the point ofabandoning your project. Step away from it and do something thatmakes you happy.
Sewing MistakesDon’t be afraid to make mistakes. Your seam ripper will be with youevery step of the way. Learn from your sewing mistakes and allow them to teach you whatNOT to do.
