All Girls Math Tournament

About 3 weeks before the event, we became aware of an All Girls Math Tournament at Coral Academy. With no time

to coach, we asked how many girls would be interested in going in cold and giving it a shot . . .35 girls rose to the

challenge! We are doing something right at HPMS for girls to feel comfortable throwing themselves into the mix like

that! Way to go teachers & staff!

So, with no prep except a quick 30 minute meeting on strategies for working as teams on hard problems, they com-peted and here are the results:

5th & 6th Grade level, Second place in Team Round: Meghana Sunkara Zaryaab Shahid Emily Dieu Amy Lum Kayla Yao Anya Dong 7th & 8th Grade level, First Place Team Round: Sophia Adams Megan Adymy Jenna DeMaio Sofia Bermudes Kirupa Gunaseelan Caitlyn Coloma 7th grade, Third Place, Individual Competition: Riana Mission

And just so you have an idea of the level of these problems, here is a question from the 7th & 8th grade team round:

An orange is at the end of a long rubber band of length 3 meters. The other end of the rubber band is wrapped around a tree. A turkey starts at the tree and jumps onto the rubber band. Every second, the turkey jumps one me-ter towards the orange on the rubber band. However, each time immediately after the rubber band lands, the orange

also jumps forward one meter. After how many seconds will the turkey catch the orange.

Seventh graders impress TI and NASA News Release

DALLAS, TX-(May 19,2016)-A team of five seventh graders from Hyde Park Middle School in Las Vegas, Nevada has won

the mISSion imagination design challenge from Texas Instruments and NASA. The national competition asked students from

across the country to propose solutions to challenges astronauts would face on a journey to Mars. The questions were based on

the challenges International Space Station (ISS) commander Scott Kelly and cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko encountered in the

first year-long mission aboard the ISS.

The problems ranged from how to dispose of waste in space, to what to eat for optimal strength and nutrition. The winning

team of students developed plans for a vertical garden to better utilize limited space to help meet the nutritional requirements

of the astronauts. The students were also asked to design a spacecraft that could detect and prevent potential collisions with

orbital debris. The winning students proposed using a reinforced outer hull with aerogel, graphene, reinforced atomic-grade

steel and titanium-tungsten alloy to protect the spacecraft from the impact of potentially debilitating space debris.

Robin Hill, the students’ teacher, said he didn’t even know his students were entering the contest until they asked for help

submitting their project on the deadline day. “I was flabbergasted when I found out they won,” said Hill, science teacher at

Hyde Park Middle School. “I feel like the luckiest teacher in the world to get to work with such smart, curious and driven

students every day.”

As a prize, winning team members, Subhan Wade, Caitlyn Coloma, Jaiden Reddy, Isha Shah, and Nicholas Ho receive

assorted space goodies and their choice of either a TI-Nspire CX or TI-84 Plus CE graphing calculator and software. The team

will also have the opportunity to chat with a NASA astronaut about their winning submission.
