KERALA VETERINARY AND ANIMAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITY

Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) came into existence on 14thJune, 2010 as per Ordinance No.44/2010 and later Act 3/2011 of the Government of Kerala. The establishment of the University was the result of the recognition of the need to advance animal production sector activities. KVASU now under takes academic, research, extension and entrepreneurship activities in animal production and dairy sector FACULTIES

Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University has three faculties, viz. Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Dairy Science and Faculty of Poultry Science.

CONSTITUENT COLLEGES The University has five constituent colleges:

1. Colleges of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Thrissur 2. College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Pookode, Wayanad 3. College of Diary Science and Technology, Mannuthy, Thrissur 4. College of Diary Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram 5. College of Avian Sciences and Management, Thiruvazhamkunnu, Palakkad

All the three affiliated institutes offer the two Diploma Programmes viz. Diploma in Laboratory Techniques and Diploma in Poultry Production from this academic year onwards.

College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Thrissur

College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy came into existence in 1955 as

the Government Veterinary College, to train sufficient veterinary professionals for Kerala

State. Subsequently, the college was renamed as Kerala Veterinary College and Research

Institute in 1961 and as College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in 1972, when it became

a constituent faculty affiliated to Kerala Agricultural University. Subsequent to the

formation of KVASU, it became a constituent college of the new University. The College is

located about 7 km east of Thrissur town, on the Thrissur-Palakkad stretch of National

DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES – 2014

I. COURSES OFFERED

1. Diploma in Poultry Production

2. Diploma in Laboratory Techniques

3. Diploma in Dairy Science

4. P.G. Diploma in Climate Services in Animal Agriculture

5. P.G. Diploma in Climate Services

1. Diploma in Poultry Production

Among various agriculture-related activities, poultry sector is the one with the

highest annual growth rate. In spite of higher output of the sector in India, per capita

consumption of eggs and poultry meat is one of the lowest. Eggs and poultry meat

supply high quality protein at cheaper costs compared to other protein sources. These

products have a huge potential to alleviate food and nutritional insecurity of people.

In this context, skilled human resource becomes essential for the growth of this

sector, both as managers in the industry as well as self-employed entrepreneurs. The

course “Diploma in Poultry Production” is uniquely designed to impart basic

theoretical knowledge and reasonable practical experience in all aspects of poultry

farming, namely layer production, broiler production, quail farming and other avian

species management. The Diploma holders are expected to pursue viable

poultry-business activities.

Five seats of B.V.Sc.&A.H. Degree programme are reserved for Diploma holders of

Poultry productions and laboratory Techniques, provided they qualify the entrance

examination conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance examination, Kerala

2. Diploma in Laboratory Techniques

Laboratory technology is concerned with the diagnosis of diseases through the

use of clinical laboratory tests. In the light of emerging and re-emerging diseases in

animals and human beings along with the zoonotic and vector borne nature of many

pathogens, an increasing demand for timely and accurate disease diagnosis is the

need of the hour. There exist a wide gap between the growing need and existing

facility in this field both in terms of quality and quantity. Therefore a key focus

should be placed on providing technically competent personnel in the area of

laboratory technology useful for animal/human laboratory analysis.

The course will be a collaborative effort of three major disciplines like

Parasitology, Pathology and Public health. It will comprise of elaborate theory

classes, hands on practical and demonstration classes on collection, preservation and

dispatch of clinical samples, handling of microscopes and other equipment,

preparation of glassware/media, assistance to postmortem examination, detection

of pathogens, analysis of blood and urine, examination procedures of clinical

samples, preparation of reagents and solutions. There will be internship training for

one month at the end of the course.

The Diploma course in laboratory techniques also intends to impart advanced

skills to mould practicing laboratory professionals to excel in quality disease

diagnosis to serve as an integral part of country’s health care system.

Five seats of B.V.Sc.&A.H. Degree programme are reserved for Diploma

holders of Poultry productions and laboratory Techniques, provided they qualify the

entrance examination conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance examination,

3. Diploma in Dairy Science

The Indian dairy is emerging as an important growth leverage of Indian

economy. It is the single largest contribution of agricultural sector to Indian GDP,

contributing about 33% of gross Domestic Product from Agriculture. Milk Production

in India has increased five folds in the last fifty years and continues to be No 1 milk

producing country in the world. Dairying in India continues to remain unorganized,

socially oriented and driven mostly by the small animal holders comprising of small,

marginal and landless milk produces. Recently there has been a marginal change in

the setup with more and more entrepreneurs joining the stream. They have started

units, having 50-100 animals, with a milk production ranging from 1000-1500 Litters

/day. More and more people are likely to join due to the support extended by the

Government. One pertinent drawback of the new system is a lack of scientific

management due to dearth of middle level professionals. Most of the

entrepreneurs would like to dispose the milk as farm fresh or want to establish small

processing plants to improve the revenue. Hence to man such units and also to

promote personals in the dairy farm management, a human resources development

programme comprising both husbandry and dairy processing is required to urgently

cater to the needs of these groups. It is also expected that such trained human

resources would be having good demand from outside the country. Keeping in mind

the above stated circumstances, a diploma in dairying of two years duration

comprising the area of animal husbandry and milk processing is envisaged.

One seat of B.Tech (Dairy science and Technology) programme is reserved for

Diploma holders of Dairy Science programme, provided they qualify the entrance

examination conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance examination, Kerala.

In addition, Two diploma holders of Dairy science are permitted for lateral entry in

the third semester of B.Tech (Dairy Science and Technology) programme.

4. P.G. Diploma in Climate services in Animal

Agriculture

Present and future climate change, and issues related to climate variability are

among the foremost scientific challenges presently being faced by the global community.

Questions of climate futures bring with them far-reaching social and economic

implications. In all environment-related aspects of animal agriculture and associated

activities, there is a recognition and demand for climate change-related expertise and

services. Capacity building in climate change and animal agriculture provides an

integrated approach to the analysis of climate change and processes in the context of

sustenance of animal agriculture and environmental management. The interaction of the

atmosphere with the other components of the Earth system, and the economic and policy

issues associated with climate change, sustainability, animal agricultural productivity and

food security are central concerns in response to climate variability and future climate

change, and are examined at both the regional and national scales. The vision of the

climate services in animal agriculture is to enable society to better manage the risks and

opportunities arising from climate variability and change, especially in animal agriculture

which is most vulnerable to such risks. This will be done through development and

incorporation of science-based climate information and prediction into planning, policy and

practice. The PG Diploma holders are expected to practice climate resilience animal

agriculture for sustenance of food security against climate change risks.
