ED ITOR IAL

Peethams and Chairs in S-VYASA is a Novel Idea to bring role models in the respective divisions to showcase them to the student and faculty community. This time it is Kalayoga Peetham after the Shantiyoga Peetham adored by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Guruji. The artistic beauty expressed through dance and music should be the manifestation of Divinity within. Hence, it is called Yoga. Our original state of total bliss, silence, peace, knowledge and power called Moksha or Kaivalya is our real home. As said by Swami Vivekananda the goal of life is to manifest that divinity. But we, as human beings, have also the freedom to misuse it. When used in the right direction, it becomes manifestation of Daivi Sampat leading to bliss, positive health, efficiency, total personality development on one hand and harmony, peace and ideal social orders when practiced by large numbers of the society on the other hand. If we use it in the wrong direction it promotes anger, greed, jealousy, hatred, infatuation, arrogance leading to tensions, stresses, NCDs, misery on one hand and if done by large number of people it leads to chaos, terrorism, tremendous suffering and disharmony taking away peace in the society. Then it becomes Ayoga.

All performing arts through the manifestation of Daivi Sampat should elevate the audience to the states of peace, joy and bliss in the end. The performances of such divine dancers with such embellishing music and background will flow the audience through the 9 moods (Nava Rasas) shown below:

The speciality of each performer is to sequence these Bhavas in such a way that it awakens the mind when it is getting drowsy or sleepy (Laya) and calms down the mind when it gets random (Vikshipta) and goes to the state of uncontrolled speed. Done again and again, the mind comes to a phase of such softness that it experiences serene peace, harmony, bliss which may lead to a state of Samadhi (super consciousness).

Such was the fantastic performance of Dr. Sonal Mansingh which raised the audience to great heights of enjoyment through Kala Yatra of the life of Sri Krishna inducing Krishna Bhava. With this new dimension added in our university, we start a Center for Performing Arts under her leadership supplemented by Dr. Mahesh Joshi. The students will get great opportunity to participate and enjoy the new dimension of Kala Yoga in the University.

äüsUÇm! (Brahmasütram)

@ten matirña VyaOyata> (äüsUÇm!-2-3-8)Etena mätariçvä vyäkhyätäù (Brahmasütram-2-3-8)

Meaning: By this i.e., the foregoing explanation about Akasa being a product,(the fact of) air (also being an effect) is explained.

This Sutra is called Atidesha Sutra. ‘Na viyadashruteh’ was the previous Adhikarana, the concept of cosmology was well projected based on theory of everything, because in Vedantic thought process, ‘cosmology’ is not an independent branch of science but an offshoot or an extension of Bramhavada or srushtivada which go hand in hand. When we know Bramhanas ‘almighty, omnipotent, omniscient, all permeating, all-pervading’; based on this particular acceptance one goes for expansion and extension of this wonderful world. In the very second Sutra of Brahma Sutra, this theory is well projected. Different Upanishads, namely, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Mundaka and others have their own orders of expansion of this wonderful world. As soon as the Brahma aspires to create, ‘Akash’ is made which is the subtlest among elements, from Akashain that order,‘Vayu’ and ‘Agni’ etc. came into existence. In this context, the concept must be understood of Matarishva as presented by Veda Vyasa. ‘Prana Shakti’ all-pervading vital force is indicated by this particular word ‘Matarishva’, so some rules which are applicable to space or ‘Akash’ are also applicable to Vayu for its subtlety.

Modern science opines that space is confined by a wall, Vayu is also confined by many frameworks.

Without understanding the movement of Prana, we are breathing in and out and energizing our Pranamaya Kosha. Without identifying its existence we are with and within, with space and within space and with Prana and within Prana. So, in that sense, creation of Vayu is well taken care of in this particular Adhikarana. In this order, Vayu is created.

Prana is never set off, even for a moment we cannot imagine being without Vayu. Modern science also has come forward to strengthen the theory of Vayu with its different forms; oxygen nitrogen etc, and its varied manifestations. Due to industrial development, pollution and other problems concerned with nature is very alarming. Ozone layer in the atmosphere is being damaged for various known and unknown reasons. For Sanatana Dharma, looking after nature is not an alien idea.

Prashna Upanishad says ‘Pranasyedam-vashesarvam’, all pervading subtle vital force as said by the Vedas is ANASTAMITA (never set off). Purest form of Vayu is Matarishva; divine form of all pervading Prana shakti is presented by Bhashyakara in this Adhikarana.

Nuclear energy has a definite role to play in providing clean energy competing with solar, wind and other renew-able sources. While solar etc require large size land which is becoming precious day by day. Towards this goal, utilization of locally avail-

able Thorium source in India would be very attractive. Dr. Amit Roy brought out that there are four routes to the utilization of Th, viz., Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR), Pressurized Heavy Wa-ter Reactor (PHWR), Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) and Accelerator Driven Subcritical System (ADSS).

Out of these technologies, FBR and PHWR are proven technologies and are used in the pro-gramme of Department of Atomic Energy. MSR has been demonstrated in the USA and there are

ongoing projects in Belgium and Indonesia for its implementation. The ADSS promises to be the cleanest technology with the minimum of nucle-ar waste post generation and DAE is also work-ing on development of ADSS in India. The full technology of ADSS has not been demonstrated yet, although the feasibility of the concept has been shown. Several countries have invested in development of ADSS. The most advanced ADSS is the MYRRHA project in Belgium which is slated for demonstration in 2020.

From the presentations and the discussions, it

emerged that the best option for India would be while continuing the programmes on FBTR and PHWR the development of MSR and ADSS should be brought on , cheaper and more sustainable tech-nology solution on fast track, so that the country can benefit quickly from this promising cleaner technology. In order to speed up the development of ADSS, we need to increase the human resource base which can be achieved by involving the IITs and Universities, involve private industries and entrepreneurs in a big way and GOI to declare this as a priority Program of DAE.

In case of Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR), some spectacular results of energy gen-eration have been claimed by many researchers. However, even after 20 years the repeatability of these results have not been consistent and the results have not been explained on the basis of known laws of Physics. Since the phenomenon holds tremendous potential if found to be con-sistent and repeatable, it is felt that a systematic and thorough well funded fast track research should be undertaken to establish the repeat-ability of the reactions and unravel the underly-ing science behind the process.

Thus it is seen that S-VYASA is instrumental and champion of these two game changing en-ergy initiatives in the Country.

Inauguration of the Conference

Inauguration of FEVI-Con was held at Samskru-ti Bhavan on 8th August at the end of Maitri Mi-lan and associated with Vedic chanting. All the distinguished delegates, participants and entire Prashanti family took part in this Unique Inaugu-ral Function. The Chief Guest Dr. Akira Yamamoto Professor, KEK Japan and CERN Europe, inaugu-rated the FEVI-Con 2017 and was also felicitated by Dr. H R Nagendra, Chancellor- S-VYASA.

Dr. Akira in his address applauded the serene and disciplined environment of Prashanti and

remarked that there are infinite source of energy in this universe such as Radio Active energy, so-lar energy, wind and ocean energy, Cosmic en-ergy, Sound energy etc. These have to be tapped through cutting edge technologies and at the same time effectively recommended for implementa-tion by Government. This is where the objective of FEVI-Con and its efforts will see the success.

This thematic On Invitation Only conference at-tracted experts in the field of energy from USA, Japan, Belgium and Indian experts from IITs, NIAS, IUAC, BARC are VECC.

Dr. H R Nagendra, Padma Shri Awardee (2016), Chancellor of S-VYASA University in his wel-come address elaborated on the various types of energies to be harnessed for growth and quality of life of all. He called upon young researchers to dedicate themselves in exploring new types of indigenous energy solutions for the benefit of fellow citizens.

Dr. Ganapati Myneni, Honorary Fellow IIT Roorkee, the Convenor of FEVI-Con 2017 said that ever since Swami Vivekananda went to USA in 1893, there have been happy exchange of thoughts and ideas between the East and the West. This has paved the way for scientific and technology transfer resulting in the establish-ment of premier scientific institutions and re-

Dr. Prahlada Ramarao, Padma Shri Awardee (2015), Who is Co-convenor of FEVI-Con 2017, Advisor to Chancellor and Director, Centre for Energy Research (CER) proposed vote of thanks and thanked Guruji for this historic initiatives in the field of Energy which will have far reach-ing implications.

ScientificSessions&Speakers

The two day conference segmented into 6 ses-sions with four invited talks in each session.

The technical deliberations started with a talk on the three stage nuclear energy programme of the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt of India by Dr. Srikumar Banerjee, former Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission. Dr. R K Bhandari reviewed the status of present accelerators in In-dia and the plans in the near future and brought out the central role of SRF technology in them.

Dr. A Hamid reviewed the status of the MYRRHA project in Belgium, by far the most advanced ADSS system planned in the world. He emphasized the need to keep in mind the licensing process for such a system as it was a completely new process in the field of nuclear energy. The reliability of the ac-celerator required for such a system is extremely high and no existing accelerator system appears to meet the criterion. Hence the accelerator being designed for ADSS has to incorporate appropriate design and material choices. They have worked on all the necessary technologies of the sub-systems and now entering the Phase I of the construction of a demonstration accelerator.

Dr. A Yamamoto talked about the status of Nb SRF cavities with Nb both of the fine grain and large gain types. He emphasized the role of in-ternational collaborations in the development of this technology and bring it to a level of practi-cal utility in accelerators. Steve Rummel made a strong case for ingot Nb technology for large grain Nb cavities as it would reduce the cost of an accelerator substantially.

Talks were given reviewing the current status of SRF cavities by Dr. P Jain, Dr. F Markhausser

and Dr. A Kimber covered the overall technical aspects of ADS system. Dr. S Balachandran talk-ed about the various techniques to characterize the Nb surface in order to understand the limi-tation of the fields achieved in SRF cavities.

Dr. D Kanjlal gave a brief description of the SRF development at IUAC, which has developed all the SRF structures required for the ADS accel-erator.

The presentation of Dr. Venkatrao Ganni was given by Dr. Ganapati Myneni on the cryogenic system at 2 K and he mentioned that the tech-nology would be made available to the Indian programme in collaborative mode.

Lars Jorgensen clearly brought out the fact that unless nuclear power can compete with the cheapest mode of current production of energy using coal, it has no chance of replacing coal, though fossil fuels are environmentally hazard.

Outcomes & Resolutions of the Conference: From the deliberations the following emerged

1. The ADSS system development should be put on the fast track since it has the poten-tial to speed up utilization of Thorium in the nuclear power generation in India.

2. The IITs, specifically those at Roorkee and Kanpur can take a lead role in the develop-ment of the accelerator for the ADS system in synergy with the DAE. It would have the benefit of generating a large human resource base, and speed up the development. The possibility of international collaborations, e.g., with the MYRRAH project should be ex-plored.

3. The development of molten salt reactors that has the potential of lowering the cost of pow-er generation. Indian industries may be en-couraged to participate in this Program and invest for the future.

Convenor and Co-convenor will draft a white paper considering the above emerged inputs from the conference and refer to the Union Gov-ernment for appropriate action.

Wushu Summer School Programat Shanghai University of Sport (SUS), Shanghai

gMr. Chirag S HakkedAssistant Coordinator - Yoga Programs, International Affairs, VYASA

It was a wonderful experience to participate in a cultural exchange with the Wushu Summer School Program at S h a n g h a i University of Sport (SUS), Shanghai, China which has collaboration with S-VYASA. The one-month summer program consists of Wushu (Martial Arts) & Chinese culture (Chinese - Art, Calligraphy, Language & food). We were around 20 students from different countries across the globe. I was able to learn Wushu easily because of my background in Yoga. Like Yoga, Wushu also requires physical & mental flexibility. In other countries, especially the West, “kungfu” is the term commonly used for martial arts but in the Chinese language, the current technical term for martial arts is “wushu”. Wushu also has components similar to Yoga like asanas, focusing, balancing, controlling the energy, etc.

As most of the students were from sports backgrounds, they were interested in learning Yoga. I conducted some yoga sessions for them and they were amazed to understand what Yoga is all about. After the completion of the program, some of us participated in the Wushu International Competition, Huangshan, China. I wasn’t expecting to win any prize as I was in the Basic Level. But by God’s grace and support from the SUS, I was able to get the bronze medal. I thank all the volunteers, teachers and the University for giving me such a great experience. I also thank S-VYASA for providing me with the opportunity to participate in the exchange program so that I could widen my horizons.

Arogyadhama Success StoriesSection A - Neurology & Oncology

After knocking on the door of several doctors for help since almost 5 years Mrs. Bharati (name changed) came to our Arogyadhama with four health related problems: Tremors in both hands, right side hemianopia (blindness in one-half of the visual field of one or both eyes), right knee pain and difficulty in standing from sitting position. Fortunately, her stroke had left behind minimal residual symptoms.

During her three-week stay with us she underwent yoga practices based on our Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy. A special yoga module prepared for neurological ailments in our campus based on yoga research was applied to her. Along with this she underwent other treatments in Ayurveda, naturopathy, physiotherapy and acupuncture. There were counselling sessions to sublimate her inner emotions and stress levels. Part of her schedule was the cleansing procedures, called kriyas, to cleanse her system completely twice a week.

Her schedule would start at 5:30 am with pranayama and meditation and continued till 7:30 pm. Her daily schedule included special techniques designed according to her ailment (asana, loosening exercises, relaxation techniques, pranayama, lectures, cyclic meditation, trataka, mind sound resonance

technic (MSRT) and pranic energisation technic (PET). Her parameters were monitored on a daily basis for improvements.

Within 2 weeks her tremors and knee pain was markedly reduced and she reported there was around 75% improvement in standing up from sitting position. At the time of her discharge after 3 weeks, she reported 90% improvement in tremors in her hands, knee pain, and improved bowel and bladder functions.

Section E - Spinal Disorder

When the 28-year-old young lady came to Arogyadhama in Sept 2013 she was suffering from back pain and bilateral sacroiliitis since four months. Sacroiliitis is an inflammation of one or both of your sacroiliac joints — the places where your lower spine and pelvis connect. Sacroiliitis can cause pain in your buttocks or lower back and may even extend down one or both legs. For Lalita (name changed) the problem started with a severe low back pain two months earlier. It was a case of slip disc.

Following physiotherapy her pain decreased and she went back to work. But two weeks later the pain returned and this time, it was severe and she could not walk at all. Degenerative arthritis changes were seen within bilateral sacroiliac joints. However, no significant abnormality was noted in hip joints. A three phase bone scan revealed an increase in osteoblastic activity in the bilateral sacroiliac joint. She had a history of a miscarriage in March 2013 and pancreatitis in 2004 when she had severe pain for a year. The diagnosis was sacroilitis.

During her three-week-long stay at Arogyadhama, she underwent various yoga practices based on Integrated Approach to Yoga Therapy

While Yoga flourishes, its essence really needs to be understood to avail of its real benefit, otherwise you will always be in the fringes.

The practice of yoga has swept the world with an enthusiasm never seen before. Yoga has achieved the status of a mass cultural phenomena, as shown by the fact that there are around 300 million yoga practitioners in the world and it is an 80-billion-dollar market. As the fourth fastest growing industry in the USA, it generates 30 billion dollars annually (16 billion from yoga facilities and 10 billion from yoga mats and other yoga props).

To start with, these numbers are indicative of a sudden surge in the business of this archaic philosophical tradition of India. None of the other Ancient Arts of world civilizations have

survived, been sustained and soared to the heights that yoga has. The credit for this goes to its applicability to every age that the human species has survived. Yoga is one of the rarest of the rare sciences, to have survived through scientific revolutions, technological innovations, and modernizations! The fact that yoga is recognized and revered in a world progressing towards evidence-based, result oriented and relational practices only makes it a science par excellence.

The prodigious popularity and the overwhelming universal adoption of this Indian discipline demands a special celebratory day to mark the

significance of its health benefits (on both mental and physical levels) for common humanity and hence, World Yoga Day has been celebrated annually on 21 June, since its inception in 2015. An international day for yoga was announced by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 11 December 2014. The prime minister of India, Narendra Modi suggested the date because it is the longest day of the Northern Hemisphere. It is the day of summer solstice, which marks the journey of the sun towards the south, a period of six months which is most favourable for spiritual practices, according to certain scriptures. One hundred seventy-five nations, including the USA, Canada, and China co-sponsored the resolution of World Yoga Day. It had the highest number of co-sponsors ever for any UNGA Resolution of this nature.

Yoga has in recent connotations been associated with incredible health benefits (like weight loss, blood pressure control, cholesterol lowering, cardiac health, diabetes management, metabolism regulation, promotion of flexibility and endurance, muscle strengthening, sight and height improvements, etc.) and that has contributed to the sudden love for the routines and physical postural regiments in every part of the world. Undoubtedly, yoga does serve the purpose of keeping the body in shape and balanced, but there is much more to it than just the physical aspect. It is important to live beyond the mat! Posture simulated yoga is just a fraction of the 5000-year-old philosophical wisdom which is buried under the huge popularity of the yoga-sticks of the modern world. The yoga known to the world today is what has been reinvented from the past 150 years by various yogis and markets, keeping in mind the demands of the time. It is imperative to know the other aspects of yoga in order to understand how it results in physical fitness.

Sage Patanjali is considered to be the father of the yogic system. Patanjali organized the teachings into 196 short aphorisms or sutras known as the

“Yoga Sutra” in the second century. This text describes the path of Raja Yoga, often called “classical yoga”. Yoga arrived in the west in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when yoga masters began to travel to the West for the first time, introducing the yogic wisdom and its relation to spiritual attainments. A special mention goes to the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago, when Indian Philosopher Swami Vivekananda amazed the attendees with his lectures on yoga and the universality of the world’s religions, thereby introducing and popularizing the heritage of yogic wisdom to the common people of the West.

In contemporary times, the business of yoga is progressing towards style, convenience, and amusement, rather than the classical purpose of spiritual enlightenment with the help of physical balance and control. Today, there are some very strange forms and derivations of Yoga practiced in various fanciful studios, such as the Co-Ed Completely Nude Vinyasa Yoga (practice yoga in nude), Hot Yoga (studios are heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit and 40% humidity), Dogs (doing yoga while holding your dog in various positions), Yoga (yoga with “vogueing,” or dancing/enjoying popular music), Snowga (yoga in the snow), and Laughter Yoga, to name a few. These techniques are inventions for making yoga fit your preferences of workout style, but they lack the very attitude and spirit of the science which was predominantly devised for spiritual empowerment in its inception.

Spirituality is one of the most fundamental aspects of yoga and this aspect has been overshadowed by the progression of the physical aspect of yoga. Volumes of texts on yoga sutras provide an insight into millions of questions about human sense and sensibilities, human sufferings and human connectedness to the world. From wisdom about coping with the stresses of everyday life to attaining emancipation from worldly desires and attaining the highest form of spiritual self by following various paths

recommended by yoga, this humongous science has so much to offer.

According to a popular legend, a renowned sage named Vyasa once sent his son Shuka, a perfect being in every sense, to King Janaka. Janaka was a great king and was called “Janaka Videha” which means “without a body”. Although a king, he had entirely forgotten that he had a body; he felt that he was a spirit all the time. When Shuka arrived at the palace, no one noticed him and he was treated like an ordinary insignificant being who received no attention, even being the son of one of the most renowned sages. The guards made him sit for three days and nights without speaking with him or serving him. The next day was a game changer when suddenly, Shuka was bestowed with the best honors and treats, adorned with perfumes and accessories, along with other royal luxuries. Having lived for a few days in extreme pleasure, Shuka was brought to King Janaka for the first time. The king asked Shuka to hold a full cup of milk and walk seven times around the hall without spilling a drop. While Shuka walked the hall, he met beautiful women dancing, playful music and beautiful arts, but Shuka remained unaffected and walked impeccably with the milk, not dropping any. When he brought the milk back to the king, the king said, “What your father has taught you, and what you have learned yourself, I can only repeat. You have known the Truth; go home.” This is the spirit of yoga!

Our contemporary times and troubles are overwhelming in a way that taking care of the

body but neglecting the spirit does not work in favor of balanced living. When once asked, “What is misery?” Vivekananda answered: “To every action, there is an equal reaction. If a man strikes me and wounds me, it is that man’s actions and my body’s reaction. Suppose I have so much power over the body that I can resist even that automatic action”. Can such power be attained? The ancient Indian philosophy says “yes you can”. “However If you stumble on [it], it is a miracle. If you learn it scientifically, it is Yoga.”

Yoga philosophy incorporates the senses, the intellect, the ego and the body into one whole reality. It suggests that our misery and our happiness are our own productions. No situation is either good or bad, but our reaction makes it so. Everything is in the senses. It is the touch of the senses that creates pleasure or pain. If we can control the senses and order what we shall feel, without letting them control and have command over us, if they become our servants, then the problem is solved. Our senses make us experience the world and mastery over them is the key to successful living, which can happen with mindfulness attained by yoga. This leads you to gain the union with your own self. You are not the body, but the universal soul! You learn to control, rather than being controlled, and this is the magic of the science of yoga. Make you mind your means to salvation, by attaining freedom from being affected by the life conditions which are neutral in themselves.

Prof. T M Srinivasan'sModel, Methodsand Perspectives in Yoga

I congratulate Prof. T M Srinivasan for this nice book compiling his articles into Model, Methods and Perspectives in Yoga. While Yoga has hit headlines and accepted by all countries, its Holistic perspectives are also getting looked at positively. In this world situation, there is a need to look at diverse traditions of Yoga both from Eastern and Western per-spectives considering the fast evolving thought processes for making Yoga so-cially relevant bringing unique feature of each country and their need. Prof. Srini-vasan being familiar with these develop-ments as a pioneer of energy medicine for years, and has been able to regularly put his ideas in our monthly Yoga Sudha, a popular monthly of our Yoga University. It is laudable that he has been able to clas-sify his articles into these 3 sub-heads and I am sure the book will find new dimen-sions of Yoga to all Yoga lovers, research-ers, students and teachers.

Dr. H R Nagendra Chancellor S-VYASA University Bengaluru

Here is a unique book proposing model and possibilities in Yoga re-search. I am very happy that this book has come out as a compila-tion of his thoughts based on years of Sadhana (practice) by Dr. Srini-vasan, a deep thinker and a pow-erful scientific writer of unique concepts culled out from evidence based external (biomedical engi-neering) science and experience based internal ( Bhgavadgita and Vedas) knowledge. This book has brought to focus the scientific ba-sis of Yoga in a convincing logical manner. Many new ideas are intro-duced and discussed for further-ing applications of Yoga in diverse fields and in mind-body applica-tions. I wish the book all success as it offers opportunities for innova-tive research in integrative medi-cine and other social sciences.

Act or React ?Do we act or do we react? If we act, we can be peaceful, calm and efficient. If we react, we may not be in a position to perform any activity skilfully and successfully; we may even get irritated and disturbed, losing our poise and peace. Without reacting impulsively and instinctively, we can respond to an act rationally, calmly, positively and effectively. We can also act without losing our temper and consequently our health as well. Every time we lose our calm while reacting to a situation, we sow the seed of sickness in our minds and that is called Aadhi. This aadhi, in due course of time percolates into the body and expresses itself as an ailment. Reactions are at the root of all psychic imbalances causing ill health in the mind, which is aadhi appearing in the course of time as a physical disease. Instead, we can only act, without ever reacting. Doing what is to be done judiciously in a given situation certainly helps the mind to be quiet and makes the action purposeful to the best of our ability.

Some minds are very tender and highly sensitive like a physical balance. Even a gentle blow of air can upset the slender balance and spoil its poise.

The other day, myself and my cousin went to a restaurant for dinner along with our other

friends. My cousin is very sensitive. She wants everything to be very clean and tidy. She cannot tolerate any imperfect situation. Everything should be most hygienic and the floor should be spic and span. She is allergic to dust, dirt and anything untidy and most importantly anybody indecent in speech or behaviour. When the dinner was in progress, she spotted out an insect hovering around the dishes on the table. That very moment, she was shocked. She lost her poise. She jumped up and screamed. In a fit of frenzy and fear at its sight, she pulled out the table cloth; and all the cups fell on the floor. Water and coffee got splashed on the clothes. There was confusion and cry, fear and frown, anguish and anger, repulsion and restlessness, irritation and imbalance, all rolled into one in her face. Everybody looked at her anxiously. Responding to the strange mishap at the table, the bearer came up to us. He gently asked the lady what the problem was. My cousin pointing to a cockroach at the corner of the table stood quivering top to toe. The bearer gently pulled out a handkerchief from his pocket, placed it on the creature, held it well covered in the cloth, proceeded to a dustbin and quietly dropped it there and returned. In this episode, my cousin reacted and the bearer acted. My cousin therefore suffers from asthma and the bearer sleeps well without any problem. Small incidents such as a cockroach in the kitchen, dust in the corner of a room, a spiders web in the roof corner of a hall and a host of such other petty matters repeatedly sow the seed of sickness and foster it for its growth as a disease.

Impatience, very often, causes cyclonic turmoil in the minds causing sickness of the mind first and disease of the body next. Inability to face anything adverse is at the root of all ills and evils.

A friend of mine travels a lot. Every time he travels, he gets upset because of his impatience. Especially when the trains arrive late or depart late, he gets annoyed. What is it that he can do if the trains are delayed? What is the use of fretting and fuming? ‘What cannot be cured, should be endured’- is the proverb. It can be modified by a positive mind: what cannot be avoided should be enjoyed. The train, for example, is scheduled to arrive at 7 A.M. and it gets delayed. What is it that can be gained by reacting angrily, shouting at any individual or the organisation? The immediate thing on hand is composure to put up with the delay positively. But he shouts and cries cursing himself and the state of affairs in the country. It is only to welcome ill health.

Life is full of appointments and disappointments. Ordinary minds are tossed about on the waves of hope and despair, ups and downs. But, a yogic mind is calm under all circumstances. Sri Ram in the Ramayana had the appointment as the crown -prince of Ayodhya. Within twenty four hours, it ended up as a disappointment. Not only was the appointment cancelled, but he was asked to go to the woods, not for a day or two, but for full fourteen years. But the great yogic mind of Sri Rama remained calm under

both the situations. He did not get elated at the prospect of his becoming a king; nor was he depressed unable to accept the exile. He was tranquil always.

One day, I was going to the office at about 9A.M., taking my two-wheeler. My child came close to me with a request to get it a train-toy, when I returned in the evening. Right from 9A.M. to 5 P.M. my son was dreaming of the train-toy with lot of hopes. Unfortunately, I forgot all about the toy and returned empty –handed only to disappoint him. Poor boy, he could not bear the disappointment. Incidents, such as this, disturbed his poise and very soon, he fell sick. I do not know if i am responsible for his sickness or his inability to put up with the disappointment is the cause for his ailment. Perhaps both of us are to blame.

Almost all non communicable diseases spring up in our minds. They could be due to our intolerance, impatience, expectations, super-sensitivity and other strong likes and dislikes or preferences and prejudices. Yoga deals with Aadhi (psychic sickness) which leads to Vyaadhi (physical ailment).

All aadhi is due to our reactions which are impulsive and instinctive. If only we act rationally and with poise, we remain hale and healthy, both in mind and body. Yoga is the best way to prevent all sickness and to promote positive health at all levels.

I-Day of Yoga turned out to bea Yearlong Celebration in Istanbul, Turkey

Kadıköy Municipality continues being the pioneer governmental head in Turkey, giving support to yoga. Since 2016, they have been the one and only municipality opening their doors for yoga activities.

Our yoga center is organizing the Istanbul Anatolian Side Official Event on behalf of the Indian Consulate General of India. For the second year’s event, we joined our forces with Kadıköy Municipality as well. The 2nd year’s event attracted more than 500 people and was the biggest yoga day event in Turkey with the attendance of Municipal Mr. Aykurt Nuhoğlu and the Indian Consul Mr. Sanjay Jain.

As there was a huge public demand for yoga

after the event, municipality officers asked us if we could start giving free yoga courses in their various buildings. We made an open call to our YIC students and they showed interest volunteering in the organization for three main reasons: (1) They already know the importance of karma yoga and how it starts with “giving” due to yoga philosophy classes they got in YIC; (2) In Turkey we insist that they give 20 free yoga classes in NGOs for obtaining their certificates and they found it easier to go and give classes in municipality buildings rather than finding an NGO eager to open their buildings for yoga. (3) Working for municipality is a good and valuable reference to put in their resume and is a good opportunity in starting their new career.

Sept 2017 37

For the full season (between October 2016 to June 2017) we have given more than 250 hours of free yoga classes at seven different centers of our municipality. We have given “yoga for positive health” to public, “office yoga” for municipality employees, “yoga for children” at municipality’s kindergartens, “yoga for disabled” at specialty center for handicapped.

For the 3rd year IDAY-Yoga activities, we started discussing what we can do with the municipality as of January 2017. For they suggested that we do an event something even bigger compared to previous year, we agreed to organize a full week program with some pre-activities.

We started the celebrations as of 17th of June, 2017. We had ten pre-activities in various cultural centers, municipality parks and buildings until the main event in 21st of June. We organized practice classes as follows; Cyclic Meditation for stress management, Yoga for Children, Yoga for Back Pain, Yoga for Positive Health, Pranayama and Meditation. We also had four philosophy classes; Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy, Basis of Yoga, Yoga for Stress Management,

Yoga and Health. All these pre-activities were well-received, we were surprised of the interest shown to yoga as the participants were not only living in the municipality area, but were traveling from far places of Istanbul!

With the help of 60 volunteers on the main event day, we hosted around 400 participants. We distributed free yoga mats and some yoga books of Purnam Publishing as gifts from Municipality and our center. The new assigned Consulate General of India, Mr. Azar Khan as well as Kadıköy Municipal Mr. Aykurt Nuhoğlu made some opening talks, we gave them honorary plates for memorandum of the day, we launched the 3rd volume of Yoga Vasistha. We instructed the same program for yoga, pranayama and meditation given in the manual of AYUSH. At the end of the program municipality distributed free food for breaking the fast of Ramadan. The participation was a bit lower compared to last year as the day overlapped with the holy “qadr night”. Due to the religious importance of the night, we finalized the night with Sufi live music and dervish dance. It was a great night!

Vyasa Yoga Singapore

3rd International Day of Yoga was conducted at 70 centres across 85 sessions in Singapore with over 8000 participants during the week of June 17-25. The main event was at the National Stadium where the session was opened by Guest of Honor, Mr. Gan Thiam Poh - Singapore MP, Ambassador of Israel and Cambodia and the Indian High Commissioner - Mr. Jawed Asraf. Ms. Ruchica Patni along with Mr. Manoj Thakur of Vyasa Yoga Singapore organised and managed including the iconic locations of Singapore like National Stadium, Gardens by the Bay, Fort Canning Park, Marina Barrage, Botanical Gardens, Schools, Universities and Sun Love Home (home for mentally challenged patients).

Sept 2017 41Integrative Oncology: The Future of Cancer Care

My dear brothers and sisters...Cancer is one of the leading cause of death worldwide, with an incidence of 14 million in 2012 and about 1 million diagnosed each year, of which 10% is from India. The prevalence of cancer has increased over the past decade and is expected to rise by 8% in the next 5 years, regular screening, early detection, and improved therapies have increased the 10-year survival from 61% to 77% in the past decade. Though there is lot of advancement in technology we have failed to tackle cancer. Addressing the root cause and using holistic healing methods along with the conventional methods would be the best solution.

Hence, this year we have selected a theme “Integrative Oncology: Future of Cancer Care” for 22nd INCOFYRA. The 22nd

INCOFYRA will make an effort to integrate Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy and Modern Medicineby bringing prominent researchers and doctors from all these fields under one platform to evolve better cancer care. We welcome you all to our Prashanti Kutiram campus.

With LoveDr H R NagendraPresident, 22nd INCOFYRA
