PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen
The Promised HandIman Habibib. Tehran, Iran / 1985Composed: 2015First performance: February 21, 2015(Vancouver), Jin Zhang, conductorFirst WSO performance
“Life’s most magicalmoments often rush by ushastily. We feel frustrated, aswe try to grasp on only tosurrender in the end to the
incessant order of time: you may notpossess! And while moments are not to beowned, their magic is eternal. We keepthat magic safe in our hearts. Soon werealize it is not enough. We still fear thattime may one day wash away. In an effortto resist the forgetfulness of time, weexpress ourselves through art, hoping thatthe physical manifestation of an emotionwill make it last longer.
Much like Prokofiev does in Romeo andJuliet, I celebrate the serenity of love andits ability to bring peace and unitemankind in times of chaos. The PromisedHand portrays a day of my life. In it, there isa day’s worth of paradoxes: from the rush,to the elation, then the lighting of acandle, and the perpetuity of a glance.
I dedicate this piece to my wife, Deborah,in memory of our wedding day.”
-Iman Habibi
Violin Concerto No. 1Dmitri Shostakovichb. St Petersburg, Russia / September 25, 1906d. Moscow / August 9, 1975Composed: 1947- 48First performance: October 29, 1955(Leningrad) Yevgeny Mravinsky, conductor, with David Oistrakh as soloist.Last WSO performance: 2011, DmitrySitkovetsky, conductor, with KorbinianAltenberger as soloist
It was déjà vu forShostakovich in 1948 as hecomposed his Violin ConcertoNo. 1. He had felt the purge in1936 when his opera Lady
Macbeth of Mtsensk was called “muddle”bySoviet officialdom. Again he wascondemned in 1948 in the general purge
by the authorities to ban abstract ordifficult music that might bechallenging for the Soviet people toaccept. Only simple music glorifyingthe State would be allowed.Shostakovich knew both purges hadcome from Stalin.
After the 1936 purge he respondedwith his magnificent Fifth Symphonyand soon became a world figure. Butthe 1948 censure was too much tobear, and he decided to withholdreleasing any of his substantial worksfor a fair hearing until after Stalin wasout of the picture. Stalin’s death onMarch 5, 1953 – the same day asProkofiev’s – was like a dam burstingfor Shostakovich. His Violin ConcertoNo. 1 waited until 1955 for itspremiere by David Oistrakh, who hadworked on the score withShostakovich and was one of thegreatest violinists of the time.
Shostakovich’s alleged memoirsTestimony reveal that the genesis ofthe Concerto came from a combinedbond to Jewish folklore plus the moralissue of what had happened to theJews during the terror of World War II.Shostakovich was deeply affected bythe Holocaust, yet also by what hecalled the multifaceted flavour andspirit of Jewish music, its ability to “behappy while it is tragic…almostalways laughter through tears...”Asalways in Shostakovich’s major works, the symphonic argument is powerful, compelling and plotted with airtightlogic. In this concerto too, his initialsbecome a musical signature: D, E-flat(German S), C, H (German B-natural).
In the opening Nocturne, the soloviolin grows continuously from thedark string melody underneath, thecentre-piece of the movement apowerful statement leading to thereturn of the quieter openingmaterial to close. The wild Scherzocouldn’t be more different, recallingthe similar one in the TenthSymphony, a work Shostakovichcalled “about Stalin.” The Passacagliauses the ancient variation form of arepeating theme layering increasinglyelaborate material on top, withdeeply moving results. The Finale is astunning virtuosic display thatencapsulates previous material toclose this brilliant, complex yet mostaccessible masterwork.
A Hero’s LifeRichard Straussb. Munich, Germany / June 11, 1864d. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany /September 8, 1949Composed: 1898First performance: March 3, 1899(Frankfurt) conducted by the composerLast WSO performance: 2006, AlexanderMickelthwate, conductor
Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’sLife) was the seventh ofStrauss’orchestral tonepoems. As the year 1898’smost talked-about
composer, his latest offering was muchanticipated by press and public alike, ashis earlier showpieces (Don Juan, Alsosprach Zarathustra and others) wereimaginative and stunninglyorchestrated works that carriedprogrammatic orchestral music toheights not experienced since Berlioz.
Strauss immodestly claimed that thestory was not about material heroismbut the kind of heroism describing thestruggles in life that lead to elevation ofthe soul. What emerged though turnedout to be a musical self-portrait in sixparts.
The first three parts portray thecharacters: the Hero (Strauss himself, with all his pride, moods and obstinacy),his Adversaries (the critics, thoughStrauss doesn’t directly say so), and hisCompanion (beloved yet complex andmanipulative wife Pauline, depicted bythe solo violin). The fourth section TheHero’s Battlefield is a vividly “modern”display of uproar.Through thesustaining inspiration of theCompanion over all the clashing bladesand general mayhem, a triumphantfinish of victory closes this battlefield ofmusic.
The fifth section The Hero’s Works ofPeace holds Strauss to a mirror asthemes from some of his earlier worksare recalled to elevate the soul inachievement. The closing section bringsback the Adversaries again with theHero battling it out. Anger subsides asthe English horn gently brings back histheme, but more strife agitates him. Ashe becomes consoled by the solo violin,Peace descends on his spirit and themusic rapturously closes.

Ancestral Voices Bramwell Tovey CM OMb. Essex, England / July 11, 1953
Preparing for theCanada150 celebrations,Bramwell Tovey chose tomark the occasion with amusical gift. For the finalconcert of the VSO’s
2016-2017 season, he created a four-movement song cycle, titled AncestralVoices, which could in some wayaddress both the commemoration ofthe 1867 Confederation of the“Dominion of Canada,”as well as theimpact of that proclamation onpeople who had already been livingon those same lands for hundreds, ifnot thousands of years. With this work,Tovey offers his thoughts on acomplicated part of our sharedCanadian legacy: the fraughtrelationship between First Nations andsubsequent arrivals.
Before the première performance ofthe work, Bramwell Tovey spoke withDavid Gordon Duke of The VancouverSun, and explained,“I was very movedby the reconciliation commission thattook place a few years ago. As a fairlynew Canadian I didn’t live here whenthe residential schools existed, but Igot interested in the politics, andwhat a terrible thing they were. I don’tlike it when artists bang politicaldrums, but I thought I might be ableto create something that reflects, ifyou like, the shame of it all. I don’twant to get into the controversy ofcultural appropriation, so there’s noreplication of First Nations music —which I’m not even qualified toattempt anyway. I’ve decide to stickentirely with non-aboriginallanguage; everything is actually frommy own cultural tradition, if you like.”While the music and texts stem fromnon-aboriginal sources,Tovey wascareful to seek out the perspectiveand advice of someone with FirstNations heritage. The songs werecreated for and written in consultationwith mezzo-soprano soloist MarionNewman, who has Kwagiulth andStó:lo
_First Nations roots.
The text of the first song is drawnfrom a work of the EnglishRomantic poet John Keats (1795-1821), and describes Arcady, apastoral paradise. It was written in1819, when the western frontier ofwhat would become Canada wasjust being opened up.
…In the dales of Arcady, / what menor gods are these? / What maidensloth? / What mad pursuit? / Whatstruggle to escape?…
The next selection is from a longerpoem, The Song of the Last Bison byCharles Mair (1838-1927).The sonof Scottish immigrants in Lanark,Upper Canada, he became acrusading Canada First nationalist, ajournalist and poet. His imperialiststance might cast Mair in anegative light, except for hissuccess as an advocate of peacefulsettlement of the West (as abulwark against Americanexpansion) and his well-meaningpraise for the dignity of the nativepeoples. Mair is also recognized asan early conservationist, for his partin promoting a sanctuary for bison.
…Strange men, who ravaged ourdomain / and ringed us around withfire. / Pale enemies who slew withequal mirth / the harmless or thehurtful things of earth…
The texts then turn away from thepoetic to the bureaucratic, with thethird text simply called The Letter. The ‘Dear Sir…’ instruction wasdiscovered in the colonial archives, specifically setting out the kind ofadvice that led to the disastrouspolicies of the residential schools.
Sow the seeds / and separate, isolate, educate, assimilate / and forcibly, effectively / kill the Indian in the child.
The fourth song is taken from textsby two Canadian Prime Ministers -Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau- about the legacy of the schools, and from a United Nations text onthe rights of aboriginal peoples.…Bring light to the truth. / Whathappened and why. / They had noright to dignity. / No right to live. /
To live in freedom, / in peace andsecurity. / The right to life…
The Vancouver Sun summed up theemotional trajectory of the cycle, saying “we go from a misty vision ofan earthly paradise, through alament for degradation of thenatural world, a bitter scherzo to atext of bureaucratic weasel words, then on to an ambiguousconclusion acknowledging pastwrongs, longing and hoping for thepossibility of reconciliation.”
(VSO, with notes from David GordonDuke,The Vancouver Sun)
Violin Concerto in D Major,Op. 77Johannes Brahmsb. Hamburg, Germany / May 7, 1833d. Vienna, Austria / April 3, 1897
By the time Brahmsbegan work on thismarvelous concerto in1878, he and JosephJoachim had beenfriends for twenty-five
years. One of the most outstandingmusicians of the era, Joachim wonfame as a violinist, chamber musician, conductor, and composer. Like Brahms,he wore conservative musical colours. Both of them favoured the Classicalpoise and purity of Beethoven, over theRomantic excess of such contemporarycomposers as Berlioz, Liszt and Wagner.
Joachim studied the concerto-in-progress closely and made numeroussuggestions to make it more practical.Brahms ignored almost all of them, choosing to follow his owninclinations. With Joachim as soloist, and Brahms himself conducting, theconcerto received its première inLeipzig on New Year's Day, 1879.
The warm, expansive introduction tothe opening movement sets the toneand scale for the entire segment.Beethoven-esque in scale andambition, the movementnevertheless bears Brahms's ownstamps of urgency and introspectivelyricism. An especially dramaticpassage sets up the violinist’scadenza, which as expected issubstantial rather than showy.

The heartfelt slow movement beginssweetly and quietly with a spotlight on thewind section. The solo oboe emerges withthe lovely, expressive main theme, whichthe soloist takes up and elaborates.Themusic generates a limited amount ofemotional heat, but it dissolves back intothe opening serene reverie.
The finale is also reserved, at least incomparison with contemporary concertossuch as Tchaikovsky's.The recurring refrainis a jovial, heavy-footed peasant dance.Thisis the most technically demanding sectionof the concerto. But as always, elements ofdisplay never overwhelm good taste andmusical substance.

Variations on an Original ThemeOp. 36 EnigmaSir Edward Elgarb. Broadheath, England / June 2, 1857d. Worcester, England / February 23, 1934
The origins of the “Enigma”Variations date from October21, 1898. As Elgar recalled,“One evening after a longand tiresome day’s teaching, aided by a cigar, I musingly
played on the piano the theme as it nowstands. The voice of Lady Elgar asked witha sound of approval ‘What was that?’ I
PROGRAM NOTESContinued from page 24
answered,‘Nothing – but somethingmight be made of it; Powell wouldhave done this (Variation 2) orNevinson would have looked at itlike this (Variation 12).’ Variation 4was then played, and the questionasked,‘Who is that like?’ The answerwas,‘I cannot say, but it is exactly theway W.M.B. (William Meath Baker)goes out of the room. You are doingsomething which I think has neverbeen done before.’Thus, the workgrew into its full shape.”
Elgar never fully explained a mysteryhe had woven into it. In later years hestated that throughout the variations“another and larger theme ‘goes,’butit is not played. It was so well knownthat it was strange no one haddiscovered it.” Its identity remainsunknown.
After the rather melancholy themehas been presented, the affectionateVariation 1 characterized Elgar’s wife,Caroline Alice. The nervous bustle ofVariation 2 mimicked Hew DavidSteuart Powell’s characteristic warm-up at the piano, while the thirdvariation’s light-hearted moodrecalled the mimicking talents ofRichard Baxter Townshend.Thesharply accented Variation 4presented a portrait of the brusquecountry squire William Meath Baker. It is followed in Variation 5 by agently dreaming picture of musiclover Richard Penrose Arnold.Elgar portrayed the amateur violinistIsabel Fitton in a lyrical variation
featuring her chosen instrument. Arambunctious variation featuringtimpani and trombones thenshowed us Arthur Troyte Griffith, anoutgoing architect. Variation 8 tooka glowingly coloured look at ayoung woman named WinifredNorbury.
Nimrod offered Elgar’s heartfelttribute to one of his most steadfastfriends, German-born music editorand journalist August JohannesJaeger. The fleet, delicatelyorchestrated Variation 10 broughtus Dora Penny, portraying herstammer in a delicately affectionatemanner. The boisterous Variation 11presented not so much itsdedicatee, organist GeorgeRobertson Sinclair, as his bulldogDan, leaping into the river to fetch astick.
A gorgeous cello solo is featured in Variation 12, depicting Basil G.Nevinson, who played thatinstrument. Variation 13 painted arather somber portrait of Lady MaryLygon. The finale is a self-portrait,written, as Elgar stated,“at a timewhen friends were dubious andgenerally discouraging as to thecomposer’s musical future.”Hisreply to their doubtfulness wasbold and self-confident.
