Manager’s Message —by Anthony ChelenaEvery October we host a reception for all of our new Members and their sponsors. We hope it is an opportunity for our newest Members to be introduced to other Members and to further develop friendships within the Club. Invitations for this year’s New Member Reception were

mailed in late September. After our successful membership initiative earlier this year we expect a fantastic crowd. We hope all our new Members and their Sponsors will RSVP and attend.

Hemlocks have another new threat. Our property has several important stands of hemlocks. The most prominent creates the tunnel effect at our main entrance with the large hemlock trees. Maybe you have some prominent hemlocks at your home. We all heard about the woolly adelgid, but now there is a new parasite showing up in Henderson County, and at Hendersonville Country Club. It is

called elongated hemlock scale, and if untreated, it will kill our/ your hemlocks. You can see photographs of the pest by doing a computer search, then go to your yard and see if you have an infestation. Call me in mid-October if you are interested in knowing how we treated ours and what kind of control we achieved.

Do you remember last year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations? Pretty fun. Look for more of the same this year. Remember, our Noisy Family Dinner in the Grill will be NOISY! If you are at a stage in life where noisy kids aren’t for you- DON’T COME TO THE GRILL on NYE. Try upstairs at the Clubhouse instead, we’d love to serve you there. Downstairs at the Clubhouse again features #HCCLateNight with playoff football on the big screen and a DJ busting until 1:00 AM. We are going for a nightclub feel. Again, nonmember guests will be welcome and may pay cash if a Member sponsor calls ahead.

How is your college football team doing? My new team, the U, plays FSU on October 7. Give me a call. I’m ready to talk college football anytime.

To many, it may seem that the lobster’s most natural habitat is on a large, oval plate between a cup of drawn butter and a lemon wedge.

ABOUT THE

American LobsterCommercial LobsteringOnly a few of the hundreds of types of lobster are caught commercially. But those few species are some of the most heavily harvested creatures in the sea, and generate a multi-billion-dollar industry, with more than 200,000 tons of annual global catch.

The lobster that most people know from their dinner plates is the American lobster (Homarus americanus). The European lobster (Homarus gammarus) is another common commercially caught species. These cold water crustaceans live on their respective sides of the northern Atlantic Ocean. There are also tropical lobsters that are widely consumed, but these are generally clawless varieties called spiny and slipper lobsters.

Habitat and DietLobsters are ten-legged crustaceans closely related to shrimp and crabs. The bottom-dwelling American lobster flourishes in cold, rocky waters off the Atlantic coast of North

America. But lobsters can be found in all of the world’s oceans, as well as brackish environments and even freshwater. They have poor eyesight but highly developed senses of taste and smell. They feed primarily on fish and mollusks, but will consume algae and other plant life.

Reproduction and Life SpanFemale lobsters carry their eggs under their abdomens for up to a year before releasing them as larvae into the water. The larvae go through several stages in the water column before settling on the bottom, where they spend the rest of their lives. They generally prefer to live in self-dug burrows, in rocky crevices, or hidden among sea grasses. Lobsters must shed their shells in order to grow, and some species can live to

be 50 years old or more, growing continually throughout their lives.

As a Delicacy Lobsters have not always been considered chic eats. In 17th- and 18th-century America, they were so abundant in the northeast that they were often used as fertilizer. Laws were even passed forbidding people to feed servants lobster more than twice a week. However, improvements in U.S. transportation infrastructure in the 19th and 20th century brought fresh lobster to distant urban areas, and its reputation as a delicacy grew.

Threats to SurvivalPopulations of commercially important lobster species are thought to be declining, and overfishing, particularly of

clawed lobsters in Europe, is taking a toll. Additionally, pollution is causing shell rot and other illnesses in normally disease-resistant species.

Golf News —by Ben Balentine Fall is in the air and our 2017 tournament season is coming to a close with only a few events remaining in October. The Fall Member – Member will be played on October

7th and 8th, followed by the VanArsdale Cup on October 14th & 15th, with Sunday’s round being played at H.C.C.

Arrival of the fall apparel has begun. This year we have added several new lines to our selection. Drop by and see what we have new for fall of 2017.

We request that anyone who has club towels and/or range bags and balls please return them to the golf shop. Our supplies are running low and we would appreciate your help. It has also been brought to my attention by numerous members that ball marks are not being fixed and sand traps are not being raked. Please be aware where your ball lands on the green and while fixing your ball mark, please find one more and repair it and remember to rake all your footprints and place the rake inside the trap.

PLEASE DO NOT GET YOUR BALL OUT OF THE HOLE USING THE CLUB HEAD OF YOUR PUTTER OR ANY CLUB. THIS CAUSES DAMAGE TO THE HOLE. WE HAVE A DEVICE IN THE GOLF SHOP THAT FITS ON THE END OF YOUR PUTTER THAT IS MADE FOR BALL RETREIVAL.

Just a reminder on how to play the out of bounds on holes #3, #4, #5,# 9 and #16. The scorecard states that out of bounds is defined by white stakes and/or fences. On hole 3 there are white stakes approximately 6 inches beyond the fence which mark out of bounds, therefore, the fence is played as an immovable obstruction and you may take free relief , stance plus one club length no closer to the hole. On hole 5 fences behind the green and to the far right of the green and on #4 fences to the left of the fairway and green have white stakes beyond them. The procedure of play is the same as hole 3.

As you all know, the driving range is played as out of bounds for safety reasons. When the ball comes to rest out of bounds, you must hit another ball from the tee with a stroke and distance penalty. If you are in doubt the ball is out of bounds please play a provisional ball to keep play moving. This comes into play off of #9 and #16 tees. If you should need further explanation please contact the golf shop.

Winter hours for the golf shop and golf course will move forward one hour effective Sunday October15th. The golf shop will open at 8:00am with the first tee time starting at 9:00am. The range will open at 8:00am and close 1 hour before sunset.

Bill Stokes made an eagle 2 on hole #14 and also bettered his age by 3 shooting a 76.

Dick Schultz scored an eagle 3 on hole #16.

Bill Alexander shot 82 to equal his age.

Charlie Phillips made an eagle 2 on hole #6 using a 6 hybrid.

Golf Tips —by Jay KingPlaying out of wet bunkers can be challenging because after learning how to get out of a bunker with normal

dry sand, we attempt to use the same technique on wet sand and this does not work. A bunker will get firmer due to rain or early morning dew. The firmer sand condition causes the bounce of your wedge at impact to “jump” through and take less sand. When you are challenged with hitting a bunker shot from a firm wet sand condition, try to set up in a way to get the wedge to dig into and through the sand. You will need to play the ball position more back in your stance

without opening your clubface. Your hands may be slightly pressed forward in your set up to allow for the leading edge of your wedge to dig into the sand. Hitting a bunker shot from firm sand will cause the ball to come out further as you will make more contact with the ball on the face of the club (due to less sand between clubface and ball). To help with this we will need to swing with a slower tempo than our normal bunker shot. Take a practice swing in the air above the ball and sand using the tempo and speed you normally would from this distance. Now try to repeat the swing with a slower tempo. Take 20% off from the practice swing. With practice you will get more comfortable determining the firmness of the sand when you take your stance and be able to adjust your shot accordingly.

Grounds —by Craig DejongPersonally, I feel that October is one of the best months to play golf. Cool crisp mornings are followed by warm

sunny afternoons. In addition, the golf course and fall foliage seems to get better each day.

In our department our priorities are changing as we move from daily maintenance to preparing the course for winter. Aerification of the greens and tees took place immediately after Labor Day. The weather cooperated allowing them to heal in time for the Carolinas Golf Association’s Super Senior Championship. Having the CGA bring tournament golf to Hendersonville Country Club is a great way to showcase the fantastic course we have. The CGA will be back this month for the Women’s 4-ball.

The days are getting shorter too. All of our mowing equipment is setup with headlights, and all of our staff members are given headlamps. This allows us to continue our normal start time, 6:00am, in the dark. Working in the dark is an entirely different experience. Safety is our biggest concern, and we stress it’s importance daily.

Feel free to contact me. [email protected]
