Term 2 Week 7 4th September, 2020
Experiment: Elephant Toothpaste
Students learned that yeast produces catalase which causes the hydrogen peroxide to break down
into liquid water and oxygen gas. The oxygen then makes bubbles in the detergent which foam up
out of the bottle. Catalase is a catalyst in the reaction, it makes the reaction go faster but isn’t used
up.
Video Conference with Dr.Cait Stuart (Geoscientist)
Students learned about earthquakes, how underwater earthquakes are caused and their impact on
the oceans and the landscapes.
Year 6 S.T.E.M Club
Students are given an opportunity to engage in scientific investigations, experiments and S.T.E.M
based challenges.
Digi Ed Workshop
Years 5 and 6 students participated in a Digi Ed workshop. They planned their narrative, created
characters from clay, used technology to take photos, added the photos to their movies and
successfully played the movies with sound effects.
Years 3 and 4 engaged in experiments throughout Science Week. They made cornflour balls,
explored the movements of water molecules in hot and cold water and attended the Digi Ed workshop.
Years 1 and 2 investigated the oceans using videos, stories, images, movies through Scienema
(Science movies for children) and experiments.
Preschool and Kindergarten engaged in experiments to find things that sink and float, learned to wash
hands correctly, explored the movements of water molecules and created a diorama. Students’
diorama showcased some of the fascinating discoveries they made about ocean animals and plants.
