Speaker Profiles Dick Bate, FA Elite Coaching Manager ‐ Possession for the modern game
Dick Bate has been developing elite players for over 20 years, working with England U16, U18 and U20 squads as a coach and also managing the England U21 International team. Dick has played a key role in the development of some of today’s English stars. As well as coaching internationally, Dick has also worked at club level as Technical Director of Watford FC, with 1st Team Manager Aidy Boothroyd describing Dick as “the best developer of talent in the world”.
Peter Sturgess, FA National Development Coach ‐ Linking the way children ‘play’ to their development in football
Pete Sturgess has been key in shaping the way The FA aims to develop young players in the country. As a National Development Coach for the 5‐11 year age groups, Pete has played a major role in producing the FA Youth Coaching Awards – a new Coach Education pathway for those involved with coaching children. The awards focus on developing the young footballer not only as a player but also as a person, focusing on providing practices that have the optimum environment to learn.
Gary Worgan, ECB Regional Training Manager ‐ “Howzat” Cricket Coaching Resource
The ECB consulted with education specialists, practising teachers, curriculum advisors and cricket coaches before producing Howzat to ensure that the product is deliverable in classrooms and sports clubs. More than 1,300 copies of the resource have already been circulated to qualified cricket coaches working within the Cricket Foundation’s ‘Chance to shine’ programme. Ultimately, it will offer teachers and coaches a combination of 670,000 different games and practices to choose from.
Jason Bowers ‐ Rugby Ready Course
Jason is the Regional Rugby Development Officer for Oxfordshire, a RFU accredited coach trainer and a Level 3 rugby coach. Jason will deliver the IRB Rugby Ready programme a pre‐ requisite to RFU Level 1. The workshop lasts for approximately three hours and is practical‐based.
Kat Titmus ‐ Essential Movement Skills for Netball Kat studied Sport, Physical Education and Community Studies at Birmingham University. After graduating, she completed a PGCE in secondary PE teaching and taught at a sports college in Birmingham for two years. Kat now runs her own business teaching PE in primary schools in Hertfordshire. Kat was selected for the England Long squad at age 17 and currently plays in the PREM 2 National league. Kat is a UKCC Level 3 coach and currently coaches Turnford U10, U12 and U15 squads.
David Hemery ‐ Coach Mentoring
David Hemery is Vice Chairman of the British Olympic Association and Chairman of the British Confederation of Sport. David is a British sporting legend having won the gold medal for the 400m hurdles at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico in a world record time of 48.12 sec. We have enlisted David’s experience as an athlete, coach and sport and business mentor to deliver this unique workshop. The workshop is designed for any individuals who currently support or plan to support other coaches within a club or community setting.
Rosalind Shuttleworth ‐ Biomechanics
Ros is a Chartered Physiotherapist, Accredited Strength & Conditioning Coach, Biomechanics Coach and Sports Massage Therapist. She has worked for Worcester RFC, Nottinghamshire CCC and was the physio for the England U19 cricket team before setting up in Private Practice. She has a special interest in biomechanics and will demonstrate how to get the best out of your athlete. Ros will highlight common problems and show how you as a coach can correct them and thus enhance performance.
Kam Raval ‐ Fundamentals of Balance & Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD)
Kam has been a senior tutor at Sports Coach UK since 1994 delivering various workshops including Fundamentals of Movement. He is currently the Community Tutor Training Officer for Sports Leaders UK. Fundamentals of Balance: This workshop builds on “An Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement” workshop, by sharpening your observational skills and ensuring you fully understand this key skill that underpins the majority of sports.
Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) is about achieving optimal training, competition and recovery throughout an athlete’s career, particularly in relation to the important growth and development years of young people. This workshop provides all the essential information on the LTAD model and its practical implications. As well as general theory, it describes how to identify talented athletes and maximise your performers' ability, achievements and commitment to sport through integration of the LTAD approach. Lynn Evans ‐ Teaching Games for Understanding
Lynn Evans is a highly respected coach educator and mentor with the RFU. He is an expert in Teaching Games for Understanding and published “Understanding the Moving Game” in 2002. TGFU is an approach to coaching that gets away from traditional skills and drills delivery. It is a game and player centred approach to coaching sport, i.e. coaching athletes through the use of small‐sided games and questioning for understanding.
Danny Wolff‐Lawson ‐ SAQ (Speed, Agility, Quickness)
Danny set up “Wolff Fitness” with the ambition of providing top sport science support to the general population and amateur teams. He is now a personal training and fitness consultant to local companies and sports teams.
He has worked with organisations such as Bath Rugby and Chelsea Football Club, as well as working with individual young elite athletes to develop their speed and conditioning. Give your performance an edge……….develop Speed Agility Quickness
Steve Kemp ‐ Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport Steve Kemp is a Level 3 coach and Sports Coach UK tutor and is currently completing an MSc in Sport Coaching. This workshop will help you recognise and respond appropriately to child abuse and protection. It will also give you the best practice tools you need to ensure that you are providing a positive and enriching sporting experience for children.
Ian Ogilvie – First Aid in Sport Ian has worked in the leisure and sports industry for over 15 years for various private and public companies and is a HSE accredited deliverer. This workshop is for anyone involved in the delivery of sport who wishes to learn basic First Aid.
