Chairman’s Letter

During the strange and difficult times we are living in, the committee and I are planning to arrange a cut down version of the festival, which will include all classes that are safe to hold.

On arrival all performers and members of the audience will have their temperatures taken and they can sanitise their hands. There will also be a card payment facility. Piano and organ keyboards will be sanitised between performances.

Unfortunately we will not be allowed to serve food, but hope that people will bring refreshments if necessary.

All our arrangements have to be provisional but we sincerely hope to welcome you to the 2021 Festival.

While every effort will be made to adhere to the timetable, the number of entries may not always make this possible. The Secretary will be unable to give more definite information until the entries have been received.

Most classes will be held at Rye St Antony School, Pullen’s Lane, Oxford. Senior Piano Classes will be held in the auditorium of Wolfson College, Oxford. The Class C piano class will be held at the TS Eliot Theatre in Merton College, Oxford. St Peter’s Church, Wolvercote has been provisionally booked for organ classes but this might be subject to change.

Ruth GeraldRuth Gerald is currently a freelance musician, teacher, adjudicator and examiner. She was Head of Keyboard Studies at the Royal College of Music from 1992 until 1999 having previously been appointed Faculty Adviser for Keyboard Studies in 1987.

Her career has always pursued a very wide path - solo and lecture recitals, concertos, chamber music, Lieder recitals, accompanying, adjudicating, examining and teaching. She was Head of Keyboard Studies at the Birmingham School of Music (now the Birmingham Conservatoire) for a period of five years, but relinquished this post in order to devote more time to performing and teaching at the Royal College where she was a Professor of Piano and Piano Accompaniment for over 30 years She was elected a Fellow of the Royal College in 1985.

Born and educated in Australia, Ruth began her musical career there, broadcasting regularly at a very early age. After winning the Elder Overseas Scholarship and gaining a Bachelor of Music degree at Adelaide University she continued with postgraduate studies at the Royal College where she was awarded many prizes, including the Hopkinson Gold Medal.

Recently she has given master classes in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Malta and Greece and conducted many seminars for piano teachers in the UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. She is frequently invited to adjudicate at Festivals world-wide and is actively involved in many aspects of the work of the ABRSM.

Ralph AllwoodRalph Allwood MBE DMus, choral director and music teacher, was for 26 years Director of Music at Eton College. He founded the Eton Choral Courses in 1980. He co-founded the Junior Choral Courses in 2012, and in recent years has launched Courses in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Austin, Texas. The Rodolfus choir, made up of singers from the courses, has produced over 20 CDs since he founded it in 1982.

Ralph is co-founder and conductor of Inner Voices,

a choir made up of singers from state schools in London. He is also Director of Chapel Music at Queens’ College Chapel, Cambridge, and Director of the only conservatoire chapel choir in the world, the Old Royal Naval College Trinity Laban Chapel Choir.

Ralph has conducted choirs for 40 live broadcasts for BBC Radio 3, is a judge for the Llangollen Eisteddfod and has written much music heard worldwide on radio and television.

In 2015 he co-founded the Pimlico Musical Foundation to enable children from Pimlico Primary Schools to sing in choirs, in particular, St Gabriel’s, Pimlico. He is Chair of the new Choral Evensong Trust.

In 2012 Ralph was awarded a Doctorate of Music by Aberdeen University. He was made MBE in 2012. In 2017, the Archbishop of Canterbury presented him with the Thomas Cranmer Award.

Jessica O’LearyJessica is a violinist with a persuasive portfolio career combining performing, teaching, seminar presenting, mentoring string teachers and writing violin tutor books.

She is Principal 2nd violin with OSJ, regularly plays with the Royal Opera House and was a member of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.

Passionate about music education, she is Head of Strings at a London Independent School, string consultant and examiner for ABRSM and regularly presents seminars to teachers in the UK and Asia. Her articles are published in international music magazines and her violin tutor books - Best of Grade (1-5), 80 Grade studies (1-5 and 6-8) and her most recent beginner violin method book co-authored with Paul Harris, Violin Basics are published by Faber.

She has performed in a variety of venues including Carnegie and Wigmore Halls, Sydney and Royal Opera Houses as well as pop arenas in London and Dubai. She gained a post-graduate scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music with the Amadeus string quartet and was recently made an Associate (ARAM) in recognition of her services to music.

Helen SandersonBritish guitarist, Helen Sanderson studied guitar at the Royal College of Music with Charles Ramirez, and accompaniment with John Blakely, graduating with prizes including the Anthony Saltmarsh Prize and the Madeline Walton Prize for Guitar.

Her performing career reflects her passion for chamber music in partnerships with eminent counter-tenor James Bowman, tenor Mark Wilde and in guitar duo with Zoran Dukic. She was a founding member of the VIDA Guitar Quartet and her performances have included recitals at the Southbank Centre, Kings Place, St Georges-Bristol, and the Sage Gateshead. In 2010 Helen made her US debuts in Los Angeles and New York, and has subsequently toured extensively throughout USA and Europe.

In parallel to her role as Head of Guitar Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Helen is an entrepreneurial educator, committed to nurturing young guitarists throughout the UK. In 2006 she founded the music education charity, Guitar Circus, and Helen’s wider work in guitar education was recognised in 2017 with the award of a Churchill Fellowship following her research in the USA of whole-class guitar programmes.

Helen is a sought-after masterclass artist, adjudicator and international jury member for competitions such as BBC Young Musician of the Year, the Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artist, the Ida Presti competition and the Sky Arts series, ‘Guitar Star’. She is Artistic Director for the National Youth Guitar Ensemble UK and directs the London Camerata and Fellowship ensembles. Helen's compositions and arrangements regularly feature in the ABRSM and Trinity College and syllabi and she is a D'Addario Classical Artist.

Graeme HumphreyGraeme Humphrey was a Professor of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music for thirty-six years from 1974 - 2010, and has been very actively involved in festival adjudicating, examining and teaching all his life; this work has taken him to Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Italy, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, France, Sabah, Sri Lanka, Japan, Thailand and Ghana.

He was awarded an Associated Board Scholarship on the piano from New Zealand to study at the Royal Academy of Music. He has broadcast many times on BBC Radio 3 (principally in the piano trio repertoire), and has performed at the Bath and Harrogate Festivals, the Purcell Room and Wigmore Halls in London as well as at many music clubs in the United Kingdom.

He is also very active in the giving of seminars to teachers, both in the United Kingdom and abroad, and maintains a substantial private teaching practice in London with pupils of all ages and stages. He regularly teaches in Hong Kong, and was external examiner at National Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore from 2009 – 2011. He has given classes at both the Academy of Performing Arts in Hong Kong and the National Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore.

In 1988 he founded the Blackheath Music Festival. From 1993 - 2010 he tutored at the Shrewsbury International Summer School and was Music Director of the Summer School from 2004 - 2010. In 1997 he was elected Warden of the Private Teachers’ Section of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and in 2002 was elected President of the Royal Academy of Music Club. He has recently been involved in the selecting and editing of a major new piano duet project that is republishing long out-of-print beginner and intermediate level duet material, primarily for the pupil/teacher. This can be seen at www.fourhandsplus.com.

The use of private photographic, audio or video recording equipment of any kind is not permitted during performance or adjudication.

COVID-19 ImpactAs you can see our syllabus differs markedly from previous years. The impact of COVID-19 on us all had to be taken into account when planning the 2021 festival. This was made doubly difficult because the situation is continually changing and no one knows what restrictions will apply in January/February next year.After considering our options we decided go ahead with a festival that is consistent with social distancing practice as at the time of planning (late July early August 2020). Should the situation be more relaxed come next year then some of the precautions we’re planning won’t be necessary. If social distancing guidelines become more restrictive then we will cancel the festival. Rest assured, if we do have to cancel we will refund all entry fees already paid.

Social distancing guidance has forced us to make the following changes to this year’s syllabus:-• There will be no vocal, wind or choir classes as per Government guidelines in July 2020.• There will be no duet, trio and ensemble classes with the exception of the family class where

entrants will have to come from the same social distancing bubble and cannot include vocalists or wind players.

• The need to enforce one-way systems and sanitise between performances and classes will restrict the number of entries that can be accommodated on the day so we have reduced the number of classes in each section.

• There will be no festival concert this year.We will also be taking the following additional precautions:-

• We will take the temperature of people entering the main venues. We will be forced to refuse entry to anyone with a high temperature reading.

• We will advise all entrants that if they have tested positive or have shown symptoms in the two weeks prior to their attanding the festival not to attend. We will refund the entry fees of anyone forced to withdraw as a consequence.

• We ask that anyone considered at risk/vulnerable does not attend this year’s festival.• Hand sanitiser will be available at all festival locations.• Performer’s seating, keyboards etc will be sanitised between each performance.• If a messenger steward is available they will be reponsible for sanitising used audience seating

otherwise audience members will be asked to sanitise their seats before they leave.• We will support contactless electronic payment at the main venues to reduce risks from the

exchange of cash.• We will be asking all participants to wear masks if the current guidance requires it. We will be

forced to refuse entry to anyone not complying.• Any performer needing a music stand must bring their own.• Festival officials will not act as page turners should a performer need one. The page turner must

come from within the performer’s social distancing bubble.• Adjudicator’s stewards will need to be socially distanced from adjudicators.• Where practical one-way systems will be implemented.• Audiences will be restricted to numbers that allow the recommended social distance to be

maintained.• We will not be providing any refreshments, but a room will be made available where participants

can consume any refreshments they’ve brought with them.• Practice/warm up rooms will not be available.

Eligibility for entry1. The decision of the committee in all matters of

organisation and adjudication will be final.

2. Amateurs may enter any class, but professionals may enter only those classes marked with a ★. A professional is defined as a person, more than half of whose income derives from teaching or performing music.

3. Age limits, where specified, are counted as from 1st January 2021.

4. In section 3 competitors are onl;y allowed to enter 1 class marked with a +. In sections 2 & 4 competitors are not permitted to enter more than 3 classes marked with a + on the same instrument. For those whose standard is well in advance of their years, it is hoped that they will select their classes for entry according to standard rather than age.

5. Competitors may enter each class once only, unless they are playing two different instruments.

Entry procedure7. Entries must arrive no later than Sunday 1st

November 2020. Entry fees will not be refunded once the date for entry has passed unless the festival is cancelled or we have been forced to refuse entry to a performer.You can enter the festival through the My Entries section of My Festival on our website. If you choose to pay on-line you do not need to send an entry form, SAE or cheque to us. You will recive your entry tickets by email and will also be able to download and print them from your My Entries page.Entries for each person and each class must be on a separate form.If you prefer to send in a paper entry form please use the website entry process to print a form or the official entry form contained in this syllabus (see centre pages). Photocopies will be accepted, and forms can be downloaded fromwww.oxfordmusicfestival.org.Entries for each person and each class must be on a separate form.Entry forms, an SAE and cheque should be returned to the Entries’ Processor, 26 Fane Road,

8. Teachers who send in multiple paper entries are requested to write their name and address on EVERY form: this is important, as entries have to be processed in a very short time. (If this is not done, our system of processing may make it difficult to trace details of candidates.) Using the on-line entry process will reduce the need to retype information. Please submit one cheque or Postal Order only for multiple paper entries. Cheques should be made payable to the Oxford Music Festival.

10. The timing and title of Own Choice music should be included on your entry form if possible. It is ESPECIALLY important for us to know if your programme is LESS than the maximum time. Please write to the Secretary, 1 Wellington Place, Oxford OX1 2LD, or email [email protected] or notify the Adjudicator’s Steward just before playing if Own Choice music is changed. The substitute piece should not last longer than the original choice and it will be stopped once the time is up. Competitors who do not adhere to the time limits may be disqualified. A copy of Own Choice music must be given to the Adjudicator’s Steward just before playing.

11. Competitors requiring the services of the Official Accompanist MUST request this at time of entry. The fee is £6 for Class G, £4 for Classes D & E, and £3 for all other classes. The Official Accompanist cannot undertake rehearsals.If the official accompanist has been requested competitors must give notice to the festival secretary if they subsequently decide to withdraw or use another accompanist.

12. If any class has fewer than 5 entries, the committee reserves the right to combine it with a similar class.

13. Notifications of time and place of classes will be posted by mid-December 2020. Competitors are requested to contact the Secretary about this matter only if they have not received notification by 23rd December 2020.

14. Copies of Own Choice music needing the official accompanist must be sent by 18th December 2020 to the Official Accompanist, Oxford Music Festival, 40 Broadhurst Gardens, Littlemore, Oxford OX4 4YQ.If it has not arrived by then, accompanists may reserve the right to refuse to play.

15. When sending music please write the name and number of the class on the copy. Please check that postage is adequate for the weight and size of envelope, as the Post Office will refuse to deliver it otherwise and it will not be collected from the sorting office.

16. All cups are the property of the Festival and must be returned by 11th January 2021 to Marian Creaser, 9 Beech Road, Headington, OX3 7RT, in good condition and polished.

17. In the event of withdrawals, it would be appreciated if the Secretary were notified as soon as possible, as this would help the smooth running of the festival.

During the festival18. During the festival performers will be expected

to perform in the order of the programme unless they have negotiated a different arrangement with the secretary, Anne Baker, in advance.

19. A copy of Own Choice music must be given to the adjudicator’s steward just before playing. Failure to do so may lead to DISQUALIFICATION.

20. Competitors are reminded that it is illegal to perform from photocopies of works that are copyright, without the permission of the copyright holder. When an Own Choice work is selected from a publication containing several different works and which is not published separately, one photocopy may be made for the use of an adjudicator, provided that the competitor has already purchased his/her own copy, and that the photocopy is

destroyed by the Festival immediately after the event.

21. In own choice classes, performers will not be permitted to use photocopies on the day, unless it is in order to assist with a page turn. The Official Accompanists may play from a photocopy in both cases, but the performer must be able to produce a publisher’s copy on the day. Competitors may give the adjudicator a photocopy of their own choice which will be destroyed after use.

22. Performers should remember that they are liable in law for the use of publishers’ copies. The Festival has a legal duty to check that no infringement has taken place. Official photocopies or music purchased on-line must be clearly marked as such. Any letter of proof from a publisher granting permission must also be provided on the day. Those not abiding by this rule will be disqualified.

23. No repeats should be performed in the set pieces unless specified otherwise.

24. The same work cannot be presented by the same competitor in consecutive years, neither should the same work be entered in the same year in more than one class.

25. Candidates will be placed in the categories shown below. In order to award trophies, the winner will, in addition, be awarded marks out of 100.

26. No cup or prize will be awarded unless the first place winner has a DISTINCTION category mark or more. Cups will be awarded to the highest mark. If there is a tie, the adjudicator will decide.

27. In general, only the names of the top 3 competitors will be announced. It is the responsibility of the candidate to collect comment sheets, certificates and own choice music from the certificate table, after the end of each class.

28. Everyone attending should take care of personal property, handbags, musical instruments, etc. For lost property, contact Miss Janet Tinbergen, Tel (01865) 725644. The Festival cannot be responsible for any loss. Any property not claimed by end of February will be given to a charity shop.

Section 1- Concerto & Recital ClassesLinfield Ltd (Property Developers) has again given a substantial donation towards the prize this year. The first prize will be £200, the second prize £125, and the third prize £75.

Past first prize winners in Class C, are not eligible to compete in the same class again.

Piano Recital Award

This event will be held in the T S Eliot Theatre in Merton College, Oxford on Sunday 31st January 2021.

There is a preliminary round during the day when each entrant performs a 25-30 minute recital. At 17:45pm there will be an adjudication and the best three performers will be invited to repeat their performances in what is always an exciting final round before they receive their adjudication and prizes are awarded.

We strongly encourage any festival participants or spectators who enjoy piano music to attend some if not all of this event. It’s an opportunity to experience conservatoire level piano playing for the cost of a standard festival ticket.

C ★ Piano Recital Award35 yrs & underAdjudicator: Ruth GeraldOwn choice programme of not less than 25 mins and not more than 30 mins. Programme content will also be assessed.EntryFee: £24.00

Additional rules for class C1. Class C is intended for performers who have at least passed a diploma or have attained a similar

standard. A letter of recommendation from a professional musician such as a College Professor, an Associated Board Examiner or a musician of similar standing should be written on the back of the entry form or sent in a separate letter. Competitors who have been accepted in the past need not send a letter of recommendation but should state this on the entry form. The committee reserves the right to refuse entry.

2. Competitors entering Class C may only enter other classes marked with ★ and other classes in Section 1.

3. Choice of programme, presentation and deportment will be taken into account.

• Paper entries must be on the offi cial entry form included with this syllabus (see centre pages). Photocopies of the offi cial entry form and printed versions of the electronic form available on our web site are also accepted.

• If not paying on-line cheques should be made payable to the Oxford Music Festival.

• Please enclose a SAE for each section entered with correct postage. Up to 35 entries per section - A5 envelope with letter rate postage. Over 35 entries A4 envelope with Large Letter stamp 100g – 250g. Please enclose an extra SAE if you require a receipt.

The Michael Popkin Memorial Award of £60 will be given by The Oxford & District Organists’ Association to mark Michael’s contribution to ODOA as Secretary for many years. The award will be given, subject to

rule 26, for the highest mark in Class 40.

We have made a provisional booking to hold these classes on the two-manual Jennings organ in St Peter's Church, Wolvercote. This may be subject to change. Candidates will be able to reserve practice time on the day through the

ODOA website (https://sites.google.com/site/oxfordorganists/) where full details will be available. Contact: Chris Greenough.

The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech and the Oxford Music Festival are committed to ensuring safe environments for children and young people and believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to recommend best practice which protects them.This policy applies to our Board of Trustees, paid staff, Adjudicator members, volunteers, students or anyone working on behalf of the Federation and its member Festivals.

We recognise that:• the welfare of the child/young person is paramount• all children, regardless of age, disability, gender,

racial heritage, religious belief, sexual orientation or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse

• working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other agencies is essential in promoting young people’s welfare.

The purpose of the policy:• to provide protection for the children and young

people who participate in our festivals, including the children of festival members

• to provide staff and volunteers with guidance on procedures they should adopt in the event that they suspect a child or young person may be experiencing, or be at risk of, harm

We will seek to safeguard children and young people by:

• valuing them, listening to and respecting them• adopting child protection guidelines through

procedures and safe working practice for staff and volunteers

• recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made

• sharing information about child protection and safe working practice with children, parents, staff and volunteers

• sharing information about concerns with agencies who need to know, and involving parents and children appropriately

• providing effective management for staff and volunteers through supervision, support and training.

The Federation will review this policy each year in November in line with Safe Network guidance or sooner in light of any changes in legislation or guidance. All changes will be communicated to our member Festivals in time for the start of the new Festival year.

Creating Safer Festivals for EveryoneThe Federation and its member Festivals use the following policies and procedures to create Safer Festivals for everyone: 1. A single, definitive Child Protection Policy adopted by all

Federation Festivals. 2. One or more designated Festival Safeguarding Officers

(FSO) appointed for each Federation Festival. The Oxford Music Festival FSO is Megan Hooper Phone: 01865762741.

3. Best practice advice in the form of Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection leaflets, with support and training for all Festival staff and volunteers. Including clear reporting procedures for anyone with a concern about a child.

4. Appropriate recruitment and induction procedures for all new Festival staff and volunteers responsible for providing safe environments for everyone attending / performing at a Federation Festival.

5. All Festival personnel wear an official identity badge. All teachers/parents/guardians /carers are asked to report all incidents of any nature to anyone wearing a badge. All reported incidents will be handled in accordance with the Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection best practice advice. In addition we will ensure the availability of a quiet area / room where concerns can be expressed in private.

6. For the duration of a Festival all teachers/parents/guardians/carers are responsible for the continuous care and supervision of their own children/pupils. If they are unable to attend personally, they must delegate their responsibilities to an identified adult and ensure that their children/pupils are aware of the identity and name of the person responsible for their care. This includes supervision throughout all Festival venues, practice and changing areas that may be provided. The Festival cannot take responsibility for any property left unattended.

7. No unauthorised photography, audio or video recording of children and young people is allowed at our Festivals. Where parents/guardians/carers do not wish photos to be taken at all, then the responsible adult attending should ensure that their child is not included in official photos.

8. Some children and vulnerable adults may have specific needs in order to take part. If this is the case we ask the responsible teachers/parents/guardians/carers to contact the Festival Organisers at the time of entry. The Festival actively seeks wherever possible to meet these needs, but must know beforehand in order to prepare support – or to advise that help cannot be provided on this occasion.

9. The Festival’s Child Protection Policy and approach to Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone is published explicitly in our Syllabus, Programme and Website. By completing and signing the entry form all parents / guardians / carers and teachers of entrants under 18 (or vulnerable adults of any age) confirm that they give (or have obtained) the necessary consents for the entrants to take part in the Festival. Without consent the entry to the Festival cannot be accepted.
