    George and Tamara Kelly, counselors

A couple sat in our office last week onthe brink of divorce. We listened to the con-flict they were experiencing and offered howcounseling would benefit them and save theirmarriage. As our session came to a closethe couple expressed relief and the wife said,We should have done this a long time ago.

This couple is not unusual. Many people put off getting help until they

can no longer ignore or avoid their problem, nearly always making matters worse.

Counseling should be seen simply as asource of help rather than a last resort.

The good life is not a matter of whetherwe will encounter problems but whether and

how we face them.Facing our problems can become an op-portunity for growth and restoration. How-ever, at times, life presents us with obstacleswe are at a loss to overcome on our own.

We are here to help you by listening, sup-porting, and guiding you as you deal with yourconcerns. We have experience dealing witha wide variety of issues.

In addition to marital counseling we dealwith parenting challenges, anxiety, and de-pression, as well as other problems. We in-vite you to contact us to learn more abouthow we can help.

It is the hope of Love INC that a much needed Furni-ture Ministry be developed in the near future. A locationand sponsorship is needed in order to complete this mis-sion.

City. When he says there is hope fordowntowns walkability, he means it.

You have a really great town, you havegreat bones. The pattern of your blocks, the layout of your town, the location of your buildings is something that manytowns would love to have and you got it,Burden said.

Its now a matter of polishing the jeweland all the things you can do, he added.

Before speaking about some options forN. Washington, which he called the biggorilla, Burden said a Complete streetpolicy is needed.

The policy states transportation plan-ners and engineers should design and op-erate the roadway with all users in mind, including bicyclists, public transportationvehicles, and pedestrians of all ages andabilities.

What can Oxford do? He said turningN. Washington into a boulevard would bethe ideal, complete with a median andshrubbery on either side of the road.

The median and boulevard gives youthe beauty, the function, the safety andallows you to have more parking, he said.

One of the first ideas he mentioned wasnarrowing the lanes to nine or 10 feet. Heexplained that by narrowing the lanes, itforces the drivers tobecome more vigilant.

When you have anine or ten foot lane, you have to be vigilant, and when you aredriving a car, vigilanceis a good thing, hesaid. You have fewercrashes...(and) if weare worried aboutsustainability and get-ting the best functions and uses out of our streets, we probably dont need 12-15 foot lanes.

The idea of putting a roundabout in wassomething Burden said he was not con-sidering at the time based on the amountof daily traffic and space that would beavailable.

    Downtown Oxford averages about

30,000 cars, trucks and semi-trucks pass-ing through daily.

I am not going to rule out a round-about, but I am going to say we need todo a lot of analysis before we find out if we have enough room...for a two laneroundabout, he said.

He praised the fact downtown has curbextensions already, but he thinks morecould be done with them. He explainedcurb extensions allow for a motorist and

pedestrians to see each other better, rsulting in lower turning speeds andshorter distance for a pedestrian to cros

He also brought up the idea of installinislands, which would help reduce a vhicles turning speed.

Burden stated that the current trafsignals were three generations old anthey needed new ones. He would also lito see at least two more signals be adddowntown.

Other ideas he mentioned were two trafic crossings, redoing the pedestrian crowalks and adding color to the parkispots.

Anna Taylor, owner of Pink & Charlisaid that when the time was ready, Buden would come in with four designeand spend three days studying and maping out a plan for downtown.

Its a three day complete package completely study our downtown, sadded.

Oxford resident Rod Charles asked Buden what the timetable would be once thewere ready to proceed.

Burden said they would have to do tstudy, which would require interviewinthe Michigan Department of Transporttion (MDOT) and Oakland County, folowed by a presentation with his findinand suggestions.

How quicklyproject wouldcompleted woboil down to

    thing: funding.It just depe

what your sources are ahow quickly peocan assemble money and whyou are going tothe funding fro

Burden said.Madonna Van Fossen, director of th

Downtown Development Authority, sathat it was critical to get the Village Coucil, the DDA, the Planning Commission well as the business owners, residents anproperty owners all on board.

Before we present to MDOT, it is crit

cal that we come together as a commnity, that we dont appear fractured, shsaid.

Burden agreed.Once that vision is locked down and

goes before the city council and the cicommission and you guys defend it, thyou are handing MDOT exactly what thewant, he said. Its a done deal; itspackage, bow and ribbon and they can justart building.

    The biggest thing I see

when watching your traf-fic . . . is its too noisy, itstoo fast and there is a lossof civility . . . That is thegood news.

    Employees expect holiday bonuses. But

in this economy, cash-strapped employersmay wonder how to reward employeesduring the holidays if funds are low.

If holiday bonuses are something a com-pany does every year, chances are employ-ees count that bonus as part of their sala-ries. Terminating bonuses without advanced notice could leave many employees in thecompany coming up short in their personalbudgets .

Small-business owners may find it dif-ficult to carve out cash bonuses, particu-larly if the business is struggling financially.Employers looking to avoid bonuses thisyear or offer alternatives to cash shouldnotify workers of any changes well in ad-vance of the season. Otherwise they mayface upset or mutinous workers. Onceemployees understand that there will bechanges to bonuses this year, consider oneof these alternatives.

    * Paid vacation time: Offer an extra week of paid vacation. It doesnt require imme-diate cash out of pocket and still showsemployees that you value their service.

    * Added perks around the office: Spruceup the office with ways employees canunwind. A computer equipped with somevideo games, a billiards table or a TV witha few recliners gives workers the ability totake a break now and then and enjoy them-selves.

    * Spa services: Hire a massage therapistor chiropractor to come in and offer mas-sages to employees. It will help them un-

wind and potentially be more productive.* Mail privileges: Enable employees to

mail holiday cards and packages on thecompanys dime, saving them a trip to thepost office.

    * Childrens party: Throw a supervisedparty for the employees children, allowingthe workers to go out and catch up on holi-day shopping.

    * Offer flex time: Give employees theopportunity to work from home a few daysduring the holidays so they can schedulework around busy days.

    * Company retreat: Plan a big-ticket tripor event that the employees can attend atno cost to them. A day out at an amuse-ment park or something to that effect may

be more cost-efficient than cash bonuses.* Gift cards: Find out if a local retaileroffers a group discount and give employ-ees gift cards to that store.

    * Smaller monetary gift: For those whostill want to give cash, make it a smallergift than last year and explain to employeesthat you wanted to do something but sim-ply cannot afford to match bonuses fromyears past -- Employees will still appreci-ate the gesture.

You can feel itwhen you walkin the doorHalitosis is an oral condition identifiableby consistently bad breath. Understanding

the causes of halitosis is the first step totreating this almost always preventable con-dition. Halitosis has many origins:

Certain foods Diet plays a large rolein oral health, including your breath. Gar-lic, onions and other foods are absorbedinto the bloodstream, transfer into the lungsand expelled in the air through breathing.Until a food is eliminated by the body, it hasthe potential to affect your breath.

Periodontal disease A primary symp-tom of gum disease is foul breath and anunpleasant taste in themouth. Periodontal diseaserequires immediate care byan oral health professional.

Poor oralh e a l t h c a r e wi th o u tproper brushing andcleanings food can remainin your mouth and breedbacteria which can causeodorous breath. Unpleasantodors can also result fromfood collecting on teeth, gums and tongue.

Breathing patterns Continuousbreathing through the mouth instead of thenose can cause dry mouth which can con-tribute to halitosis. Dry mouth (xerosto-mia) is a significant decrease in saliva pro-ductions so the mouth is unable to cleanse

itself and remove food particles. Xerosto-mia can also be caused by medications or asalivary gland disorder.

Improperly cleaneddentures Dentures have the potential tocollect bacteria and food particles resultingin bad breath if not properly cleaned.

Tobacco products Cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco and snuff can stain teethand put the body at risk for a host of dis-ease as well as contribute to bad breath.

Medical conditions Bad breath can bean indicator or symptom of a respiratoryinfection, diabetes, a gastrointestinal disor-der or a liver or kidney disorder. Consultyour physician.

    Good oral healthcare prevents hali-

tosis. Treatment of bad breath primarilydepends on the cause but proper brushing, flossing, in addition to regular exams andcleanings help remove the bacteria thatcause bad breath.

Charge cards and holiday spendingReady or not - the biggest spending

season of the year is quickly approach-ing. Even in these tough economic times, with so many people on restricted bud-gets, studies still suggest that most house-holds will spend an average of $500 to$800 on holiday expenses.

Where is the money going to comefrom to pay for the gifts, the food, and allthe trimmings?

Some people have beenputting money away in aHoliday account, and oth-ers are able to fit the pur-chases in their budget.

More commonly, manypeople will make their pur-chases with Credit Cards.

If you are consideringusing a Credit Card, pleasetake a moment and look closely at your credit cardagreement(s).

What is the stated inter-est rate? Is the rate vari-able? What are the monthlypayment requirements? Most importantly- are there any gimmicks or surprises inthe fine print?

With new credit card laws continuallybeing updated, revised and put into place, many credit card companies have changedtheir fixed rates to variable rates, makingit easier for them to bump up your rate.

Other credit card companies offer youa low introductory rate, but once the shortfinancing period is up, the rate can jump

up to 20 percent or higher. Even depart-ment store cards tend to carry a high in-terest rate.

Instead of using these credit cards,Lakes Community Credit Union will helpyou with your holiday spending with theirspecial Holiday loan promotion.

This special loan will make the holidaysaffordable with a 6.99 percent APR, a 12month term and a maximum loan amountof $2,500.

The best part is that you can use themoney on holiday shopping, taking a va-cation or putting in a new furnace.

Typically, Credit Unions are looking tohelp individuals and families reach theirfinancial goals without charging a highprice and heavy penalties. As the financialcrisis hit our country, Credit Unions lookedfor ways to help stabilize the problems of

the American auto industry - a problemwe all could feel in the metro Detroit area.

We're currently offering car loans "aslow as" 3.75 percent APR to qualified buy-ers - call us for details. Take the rebateand see how much money you can saveby financing your new car at Lakes.

Lakes Community Credit Union offersmembership to people that work, live and/ or worship in Oakland County.

As a member, you get to vote for ourBoard of Directors. Our profits are re-turned to you in lower loan rates - themoney doesn't go to big corporate own-ers. We're located at 350 N. Park Blvd (M-24) just south of Indianwood Rd. Wishingyou a safe and happy holiday season!

This winter season is coming with asuper sensual and feminine trend. The big-gest trend for this season are the formfitting dresses, full skirts with high- waistand a lots of vests and jackets.

To create the 2010 fall/winter collec-tion Ella Fashion got the inspiration fromthe ROCOCO Art, a French design tech-nique applied on the lines, colors andshapes making fashion revival of whatwas worn in the past.

This fashion revival is also seeing inthe texture of the Plush Velvet, Opaqueand Shiny fabrics present in the decora-

tions as well as in the light and nude shadesfabrics that symbolize the lightness andsimplicity that go together with embel-lishes pieces.

The prints for this season bring a lightfinishing that is more in l ine with our pro-file with designs tied to XVIII century. The clothes each one with their particulardetail, the laces, the velvet buckle, a dif-ferent lining, the golden metals, ruffles, drapes, pleads are all following the fash-

ion style dictated by Maria Antonieta dur-ing the XVIII century.

Come for a magnificent shopping ex-perience at Ella Fashion and transform yourwardrobe in this romance.
