The following is a brief description of the maincomponents used in your caravan. Morecomprehensive descriptions can be found in theequipment manufacturers literature held in theOwners Information Pack.

BPW Chassis

BPW are one of the largest producers of caravanchassis in Europe. The chassis is galvanisedspecial steel fitted with neidhart axles andsuspension system. For 2003 models theExpolorer Group Limited are utilising the newBPW V-TEC Chassis System.

Note: Holes should not be drilled intothe chassis. When purchasing astabiliser, consult your retailer who willadvise on the correct type to fit.

Braking System.

The Braking System comprises a rod-operatedoverrunning device with expander mechanismand adjuster box.

An automatic reversing system with a springloaded reverse lever is attached to the adjusterbox. The system also incorporates a link device, which gives added safety to the handbrakeoperation when parking on a reverse slope orsteep hill. Brake adjustment instructions aregiven in the maintenance section of this guide.

Body Shell

Caravan bodies are constructed from the highestquality materials. The floor is constructed from aW B P plywood sandwich, impregnated with anti-damp and rot compounds and adhesives.

The walls comprise an insulated foam sandwichhaving pre-coated aluminium exterior surfaceand vinyl coated plywood interior finish. Woodenframing is positioned within the sandwich to addstrength.

The very latest state of the art presses areemployed to produce the extremely wellinsulated, robust, yet lightweight sections.

Windows are all of a double glazed acrylicconstruction and the door frames are extrudedaluminium. The gas bottle locker is an integral

moulded glass fibre or acrylic capped ABSconstruction for strength and lightness.

Each caravan is fitted, as standard, with anawning channel as an integral part of the near-and/or off-side aluminium roof and body sidemoulding. If it is found necessary to fit additionalattachments, care must be taken to ensure thatany holes which are drilled in the outside of thebody are correctly sealed.

Awnings which employ rubber suckerattachments rather than screw fixings arerecommmended.

On NO account should screw threads longerthan 5/8th inch (15mm) be permitted to enter theshell sandwhich (from inside). Ensure that allscrews are of the self tapping type.

No screw or any other object should be permittedto enter the ceiling of your new caravan.

SITE ARRIVAL

Check Site Regulations

Selecting a Pitch

Carefully select where you wish to place yourcaravan. The site should be as level aspossible, preferably not under or near trees, well drained and away from possible boggyareas. Consider how you will move the caravanwhen it is time to leave the site. On slopingground it is better to pitch facing downhill, especially during wet weather.

Lateral Levelling

On uneven ground lateral levelling isaccomplished by the use of a leveller jack and

a spirit level placed across the caravan floor.

Place the leveller jack, folded flat, in front of thewheel needed to be raised to level the axle.

Tow the caravan onto the leveller jack until thespirit level shows that the caravan is laterallylevel. Apply the caravan handbrake and chockthe caravan wheel if necessary. Lower thejockey wheel to ground level.

Using the adjustment on the jockey wheel andholding the latch of the locking device, unhitchthe caravan.

(On upward facing pitches when thehydraulically damped drawbar of the hitchbecomes fully extended, it will be necessary tocompress the drawbar slightly in order toachieve a clean unhitching). With the caravanbrake on, reverse the towing vehicle about 1inch (2.54cm) to release hitch lock tension andusing the jockey wheel adjustment, unhitch thecaravan as previously described.

Fore and Aft Levelling

Place the spirit level fore and aft and, using thejockey wheel adjustment, level the caravanhorizontally.

Wind down the corner steadies onto loadspreaders (blocks of wood a minimum of 6inches (15.25cm) square), taking care not to liftthe caravan wheels.

Caution: Never enter the caravanwithout first lowering the four cornersteadies with the brace provided.

Corner steadies should not be used asa jacking device.

It is important that the caravan is correctlylevelled to ensure the correct working of therefrigerator, cooker etc.

12

SITE ARRIVAL

Parking on a ReverseSloping Site or Steep Hill

For successful parking on a reverse slope orsteep hill, the operator need only apply thehandbrake with one hand while gently butpurposely inching the caravan or trailer a smalldistance backwards with the other.

WARNING

If the handbrake is NOT fully applied to thelast tooth (i.e. vertical) and is set to somelesser position than the full vertical, thenproblems will almost certainly arise after thetrailer has been uncoupled from the towingunit.

13

Page 16: Owners Handbook 2003 - Elddis

CONNECTING SERVICES - WATER

WATER

Your caravan will be fitted with either a CarverCompact or a Carver Crystal 3 water system. Todetermine which model you have, please referto the equipment chart contained in yourOwners Information Pack.

Ensure all taps are in the off position and the12v water pump switch, located on the electricalcontrol panel, is off.

Using a water container (not supplied)

For either water system, fill fresh watercontainer and place in a suitable position. Placewaste water container under main drain valve.

Place the submersible pump into the freshwater container, ensuring it is fully submergedbefore operating the system (see diagram).

Using the Carver Waterline(direct connection to mains supply unit)

Connect the Carver Waterline hose to themains unit on the pitch. (The end without thevalve connects to the mains unit).

Carver Crystal 3 Water SystemOPERATION

Raise the crystal filter housing lid (seediagram). Clean both the water socket and thepower supply terminals for the pump. It isadvisable to lubricate the water inlet usingvegetable oil (this reduces the friction betweenthe O ring and the plastic surface).

Plug the pump assembly into the housingensuring that it is pushed fully home .

14

Page 17: Owners Handbook 2003 - Elddis

CONNECTING SERVICES - WATER

To remove the pump from the crystal housing, press the two clips in at either side of the pumpplug and pull.

Do not remove by pulling the electric cableor the hose.

CHANGING THE FILTER CARTRIDGE

When inserting a new filter cartridge into thehousing, smear vegetable oil on the two Orings. (This reduces friction and makes it easierto remove).

It is recommended that the filter cartridge isreplaced after 30 days of use.

To remove the filter cartridge pull the tab on thebottom of the filter, which will release the filterfrom the housing.

Always ensure that the new filter cartridge ispushed fully home into the housing.

CARVER COMPACT

Connect the fresh water hose directly to theCarver Compact inlet.

Finally put the pump switch on the controlpanel to on and turn the cold tap on until waterflows.

Prior to operation of the water heater, ensurewater is flowing from hot tap.

DRAINING DOWN YOUR WATER SYSTEM.

It is essential that you drain down your caravanwater system when it is not in use. This is mostimportant during winter months to protectagainst from frost damage.

1. Disconnect the water pump and switch offthe power supply.

2. Open the safety drain valve on the waterheater located next to the water heater.

3. Open all taps and remove all plugs fromsinks and showers. Lever-operated tapsshould have the lever put into the upposition.

4. Where fitted, open the internal drain valves.

5. Open the drain outlets on the outside ofyour caravan.

6. If an inboard water tank is fitted, ensure thatthe drain tap on the tank is open.

7. Adjust the level of the caravan to ensurethat the drain outlet is at the lowest point ofthe caravan. This will aid the flow of waterto ensure that all water is drained off.

8. After 30 minutes, level the caravan andprepare it for storage if necessary.

15

Page 18: Owners Handbook 2003 - Elddis

CONNECTING SERVICES - GAS

GAS

Your caravan is designed to operate usingeither propane or butane liquefied petroleumgas at 30m/bar. Gas can be obtained from yourcaravan dealer.

Your caravan is designed to accept a maximum2 x 7.5kg gas bottles.

TYPES OF GAS

Butane

Butane is supplied in the U.K. in Green or Bluebottles.

All these have a male left hand thread exceptfor Camping Gaz, which has a special femaleright hand, Calor, 7.5 kg and 15 kg bottles havea special clip-on connection.

Continental bottles usually have a male lefthand thread which is similar, but not identical, toUK butane.

Butane is suitable for use at temperatures downto 2ºC but will not work below that.

Propane

Propane is supplied in red, or partly red bottleswhich have a female left hand threadedconnector.

Scandinavian countries use the sameconnector.

Germany or Austria supply propane with a maleconnection.

Propane will work at temperatures as low as40 ºC and is therefore suitable for all wintercaravanning.

CONNECTION

Make sure that heating and cooking appliancesand gas cylinders are switched off.

Ensure that the correct regulator for the gaschosen has been connected to the gas bottle.

The regulator is a governing device whichadapts the bottle pressure to one that suits theequipment in the caravan.

It is recommended that the regulator valveshould be fitted with an over-pressure releasevalve to 150m/bar.

Note: Regulator valves should always be inthe OFF position when towing.

Hoses

Low pressure flexible hoses with a maximumlength of 700mm should be fitted between thepressure regulator and the rigid pipework.

Hoses should be made from Neoprene, whichis black, and should conform to BS 3212.Rubber hosing should never be used.

It is strongly recommended that a jubilee clip isused to secure the hose to the rigid pipework, inorder to prevent accidental removal.

GAS SAFETY ADVICE

Regularly check flexible gas hose, joints andconnections for tightness. Finally, make surethat each gas appliance is working efficiently tothe recommendations of the appliancemanufacturers.

16

Page 19: Owners Handbook 2003 - Elddis

CONNECTING SERVICES - GAS

FACTS ABOUT LPG

LPG is not poisonous.

Bi-products are harmless.

LPG is dangerous if all air and oxygen isexcluded.

(Ventilation holes must be clear at all times).

LPG has been given a smell by themanufacturers in order to identify leaks.

The gas is heavier than air and therefore sinksto the lowest point.

WARNING:

Aerosols and highly flammable liquidsmust not be stored in the compartmentbehind, or adjacent to, any gasappliance.

Some industrial LPG appliances operateat high pressure and require a highpressure regulator. This often has anadjusting handle on it. NEVER use sucha regulator on a caravan.

Awning Spaces and LPG Appliance Exhaust

There is no danger of pollution of an enclosedawning space from the LPG exhaust from arefrigerator venting into it.

Space heaters may produce sufficient exhaustto pollute the awning space, if it is totallyenclosed, from a general comfort, smell andhygiene point of view. In extreme cases therecould be a build up of carbon dioxide to adangerous level.

Caravan owners are advised to allow somefresh air circulation in the awning space whensuch appliances are in use.

Please ensure that, when you fit your awning tothe side where the water heater flue is fitted, there is sufficient ventilation in the awning totake account of the exhaust and condensationcreated by the flue.

PRECAUTIONS

a) Never look for a leak with a match. Alwaysuse a soap solution or its equivalent whentesting connections. Do not operate anyelectrical apparatus whatsoever, especiallylight switches. If the leak is not obvious, thecaravan should be evacuated and qualifiedpersonnel consulted.

b) Avoid naked flames when connecting orchanging a cylinder.

c) Check the flexible hose frequently.

Roof-Mounted Flue installations

All flue installations should be inspected forcorrosion throughout their length at least once ayear . Flues should be replaced if any sign ofperforation is found. Ensure that thereplacement is of an approved type.

CONNECTING SERVICES - ELECTRICITY

6. Preferably not less than once a year, thecaravan electrical installation should beinspected and tested, and a report on itscondition obtained, as prescribed in theRegulations for Electrical Installations, published by the Institute of ElectricalEngineers.

Note: Connection to a mains voltage supply OVERSEAS requires particularattention.

Care must be taken when connecting suppliesabroad since the supplies can be of REVERSEPOLARITY. The significance of REVERSEPOLARITY is that when equipment is switchedoff, it may not be electrically isolated.

The only certain way of making equipment safeis to unplug it.

A means of checking the polarity of the mainssupply when overseas is useful.

There are available several proprietary makesof equipment for the purpose.

If it can be achieved, it is preferable to connectlive to live, and neutral to neutral to maintain fullelectrical protection.

CHECK all caravan equipment is set-up toaccept the site supply before actually switchingon.

CONNECTING SERVICES - ELECTRICITY

MAINS UNIT

The Mains Unit replaces the conventionalfusebox. Similar, but larger ones are often fittedin new houses.

The unit gives overload and earth leakageprotection for the 230v electrical supply in yourcaravan.

For normal operation all switches on the unitneed to be in the ON position. The switches onthe left of the unit are known as MCBs(miniature circuit breakers).

These take the place of the conventional fusebut are more convenient.

In the event of a fault the MCB trips i.e.automatically moves to the OFF position.

After elimination of the fault the MCB can bere-set by switching to the ON position. (Againstthe spring pressure in an upwards direction).

If an earth fault develops, or a person was totouch a live piece of equipment, the leakage ofcurrent to earth should immediately operate theRCD (residual current device) and trip themain switch, to the OFF position.

This switch is only re-settable after eliminationof the fault.

To re-set, operate the switch as for MCBs.

Periodically the RCD should be checked byoperating the test button marked T. The unitshould immediately switch to the OFF position. If the unit does not switch off then a qualifiedelectrician should be consulted.

If the unit does switch off, the test is completeand the switch can be re-set restoring thesupply back to normal.

Note:

It is possible that all of the 230V mainselectrical equipment may not be able to beoperated simultaneously. A typical UKcaravan site mains hook-up point provides amaximum output of 10 amps and on somecontinental sites the available output maybe as low as 5 amps. If your loading exceedsthe site supply it may trip the site circuitbreaker. Please check the available mainsoutput with your site operator.

The following items need to be added togetherif used simultaneously.

230V Mains equipment typical consumption figures:

Fridge 0.50 amps

Charger 0.50 amps

Water heater 2.75 amps

Blown air heaters 4.80 amps

Colour TV 2.50 amps

Microwave 10.00 amps

Air conditioning 4.00 amps

N.B. The information provided in thisGuide relating to fitted equipment isonly intended as a quick reference.Comprehensive details of maintenanceand fault finding charts whereappropriate can be found by referringto the accompanying manufacturersliterature. If any doubts still exist aboutthe operation of the equipment qualifiedpersonnel or your caravan retailershould be consulted.

Your caravan will be fitted with either a ZIG,Power Centre II or BCA Leisure charging andpower distribution unit.

ZIG X7/X8 CHARGING UNIT & POWERSUPPLY

The Zig is a fully automatic battery charger, connected to a six-cell lead acid battery (notsupplied) with a nominal voltage of 13.8 volts, the unit will charge and re-charge the battery byraising the terminal voltage to equal that of theoutput of the battery charger. As the batteryvoltage increases the input current from thebattery charger automatically reduces until itceases to flow. This provides fast and efficient

battery charging and eliminates the possibilityof overcharging , unless the battery is at fault.

The charger is designed to charge 12V leadacid type batteries, the capacity of the batterymust not be less than 60 ampere hour. (Thebigger the battery the better.) Should the batterycontain a faulty cell, the terminal voltage will notrise sufficiently to switch the charger off and thebattery will eventually boil dry. The mostcommon cause for cell failure is discharging thebattery below the recommended level ofapproximately 10V.

Please note that any drop in voltagecoming in will reduce the output.

It is recommended that you fit a sealed-for-life battery.

WARNING:

Under no circumstances should a fuseof different size or rating be fitted.Should a fuse blow for any reason, thefault must be diagnosed beforereplacement.

CONNECTING SERVICES - ELECTRICITY

WARNING:

Always disconnect the electricalconnector between the towing vehicleand the caravan before connecting amains supply to the caravan andbefore charging the caravan battery byany other means.

THE POWER CENTRE II SYSTEM (P.C.II)

The function of the Power Centre II (P.C.II) is tocontrol and protect the caravans 230 volt ACmains circuits, and provide 12 volt charging anddistribution circuits. The P.C.II can be foundbehind the space heater in each caravan.Housed within each P.C.II unit are:

An all-electronic battery charger/power supply.

Automatic selection relays.

12 volt fuse block & mains RCD with 2 MCBs.

Access to the operation of these devices isgained by lifting upwards the transparent plasticdoor on the unit .

The power supply can be removed from theP.C.II by removing the fuses and then the frontcover (4 cross headed screws) and unscrewing

the 4 battery charger fixing screws. The 12 volt+ve and -ve connections simply pull off.

A built in battery charger in conjunction with a12 volt battery supplies the 12 volt circuits viathe DC output fuses numbered 2-6. Output isvia the 12 pin and 15 pin sockets.

Caution!

As with all types of transformer/powersupply, a certain amount of heat isgenerated. This will vary with the chargerate, therefore adequate space andventilation must be provided and maintainedaround the unit to aid cooling.

Keep all flammable materials and aerosolswell away from this appliance and othersources of heat, as this could cause thepressure in the aerosol to rise. Should a sealthen fail it is possible an explosion willensue.

TRUMA ULTRASTORE WATER HEATER

This water heater features a dual sourcesystem of water heating, powered by LiquidPetroleum Gas or 230V mains electricity. For afaster heating-up period the appliance can besimultaneously operated with gas andelectricity. The holding tank has a capacity of 10ltrs.

WARNING:

Always fit the cowl cap when the waterheater is not being operated. If there isany risk of frost and preferably eachtime you leave the site, the water heatershould be drained leaving all taps open.Frost damage is not covered by thewarranty.

The system may be fitted to a mains watersupply with special adaptors, which include apressure reducer which does not allowpressure to exceed 2.8 bar.

During the initial operation of a brand newappliance some fumes are normal. Theseshould soon disperse if the caravan is wellventilated.

Filling the Truma Ultrastore

1. Check the safety/drain valve in the cold

water intake is closed. The lever should bein the horizontal position ((e) see diagram).

2. Set the hot tap in either the washroom orkitchen in the open position.

3. Switch on the power for the water pump.

4. Leave the tap open to let air escape whilethe water heater is filling. The heater is fullwhen water flows freely from the tap.

5. It may be necessary to adjust the pressureswitch on the water system.

N.B. If only the cold water system is beingused, the heater tank will still be filled withwater and to avoid frost damage it shouldalways be drained as described below.

Draining the water heater

1. Disconnect the water pump and switch offpower supply where appropriate.

WATER HEATER SYSTEM

MAINTENANCE

The water heater should be serviced annuallyduring the routine caravan service.

Repairs

Repairs should only be carried out by qualifiedpersonnel as the warranty will be void ifunqualified persons attempt repairs. Onlyoriginal Truma parts should be used.

De-scaling

Introduce wine vinegar into the water systemand allow time for it to react with the scale thenflush out thoroughly with fresh water.

Hygiene

The water tank in the Truma Ultrastore is madeof high quality stainless steel, however, in orderto avoid colonisation of micro-organisms thetank should be heated up to 70ºC (withelectrical heater) at regular intervals. Waterfrom the hot tap should not be used for drinking.

Fuses

The water heater fuse is on the electroniccontrol unit on the heater.

IMPORTANT Only replace the miniature fuseon the p.c.b. with a fuse of the same type:1.25 AT EN 60127-2-3 (slow action).

Safety

There is no danger of exhaust gas pollution inawning spaces from water heaters which ventinto them but it is advised that fresh aircirculation should be provided and any windowimmediately above the flue outlet should bekept closed.

Please ensure that, when you fit your awning tothe side where the water heater flue is fitted, there is sufficient ventilation in the awning totake account of the exhaust and condensationcreated by the flue.

WARNING

Water heaters (as with otherappliances) should be turned off andgas cylinder valves closed whilst thecaravan is in motion.

Sterilising the system

At the start of the season or if the caravan hasnot been used for some time, sterilise the watersystem thoroughly by preparing about 10 litresof water, containing a sterilising agent madespecially for the purpose. This should beavailable from your Explorer Group retailer. When an on-board tank is fitted, ensure thatsufficient mixture is prepared to fill the wholetank.

DO NOT use domestic bleach, camden tabletsor sodium metabisulphide.

Pump about half of the solution through thesystem, opening all taps in turn and leave fornot longer than 30 minutes. Pump theremainder through. Drain the water heater andwater tank (if fitted) then pump at least 18 litresof fresh water through the system again, opening all taps in turn, then drain again.

Similar attention should be paid to the hygieneof the external water container and submersiblepump and hose used to draw off water.

DO NOT use water which has stood in a watercontainer for any length of time and do not usegarden hoses for filling tanks.

Water filter (where fitted)

Replace the in-line filter cartridge with a newone after sterilising the water system. On noaccount should the old cartridge be used againas the sterilising agent will have saturated thefilter bed.

After fitting the new filter flush the system foraround 30 seconds to remove any looseparticles of carbon. It is recommended that anew filter is fitted at the sart of each seasonafter sterilising the system and again afterapproximately 30 days usage as the filterbecomes less effective after this period.

On no account should the old cartridge beused again as the sterilising agent will havesaturated the carbon bed.28

PRESSURISED WATER SYSTEM

PRESSURISED WATER SYSTEM

Pump

Fresh water is supplied to the caravan from anexternal water container by the Carver CrystalFilter System, which consists of a socketlocated near the battery box, on the offside ofyour caravan and a separate plug-in pumpassembly. The socket is protected by a hingedlid which should be kept shut when the pumpis not connected. The lid is easily opened bygripping the lower edge and pulling outwards. The separate plug-in pump assembly consistsof a submersible pump, hose and plug. Theplug provides connection to both water supplyto the caravan and 12 volt DC electric powerto the pump. A dust cover is fitted to theconnecting dual hose to prevent contaminantsfalling into the water container.

Pressure Switch

In most modern caravans the water system ispressurised. When a tap is closed pressure ofwater builds up in the system. At apredetermined level, the pressure will operatea pressure switch which, in turn, will stop thepump running. Opening a tap will reduce thepressure and the pump will start running. Atnormal flow rates the submersible pumpshould operate continuously - but at low ratesthe pressure switch will cycle on and off to

maintain back pressure in the system, anadjustment to the switchs diaphragmsensitivity is required. This also may berequired, usually because the power supplyvoltage has varied by more than ± 0.5 volts. The possible causes are:

1. Battery drainage through normal use.

2. Setting the switch when on mains electricsupply (typically 230 volts) then using a 12volt battery.

3. Setting the switch when on 12 volt batterythen using mains electric supply (230volts).

To adjust the pressure switch:

1. With the system properly primed, close alltaps and showers.

2. Leave the pump run switch (located on the12 volt distribution panel) turned on.

3. Tighten the adjusting screw clockwise. Thepump should now be running.

4. Partly open one cold tap to allow water toflow at about 1 pint in 15 seconds.

5. Slowly loosen the adjusting screw, byturning anti-clockwise, until you can hearthe micro-switch start to click. Thediaphragm will then be properly adjusted.

33

Page 36: Owners Handbook 2003 - Elddis

PRESSURISED WATER SYSTEM

NOTES

1. Never allow the pump to run DRY. Alwaysensure that the pump is submerged in thewater or the life of the pump will bereduced.

2. Do not allow the pump, the watercontainer or the water system to freeze inthe winter. Always drain the system at theend of the season.

3. Clean the water system at the start and theend of the season with a sterilising fluid,e.g. Chempro SDP or similar. Then flushthe system through with clean water forapproximately 30 seconds.

4. If the pump fails to deliver water, the mostlikely cause will be air in the system. Switchoff the pump and shake the pump assemblyin the water. Then switch on again.

34

WATER FILTER

WATER FILTER SYSTEM

CARVER CRYSTAL 3 FILTER SYSTEM

The Carver Crystal 3 Filter is designed to bringwater into your caravan in a convenient andefficient manner. The system includes a specialtwo-stage filter which removes unpleasanttastes, smells and colouring to give clear, freshtasting water.

The first stage is a filter screen which retainssmall solids. The second stage is a bed ofsilverised activated carbon, which removeschlorine tastes and smells, etc. This is done byabsorption and by mechanical filtrationreducing algae and bacteria. Bacteria retainedare then destroyed by the silver content. Thisaction also prevents bacteriological growth inthe filter.

The Carver pump is detached from the crystalhousing for security and whilst touring.

CHANGING THE FILTER CARTRIDGE

When inserting a new filter cartridge into thehousing, smear vegetable oil on the two Orings. (This reduces friction and makes it easierto remove.)

It is recommended that the filter cartridge isreplaced after 30 days of use.

To remove the fiter cartridge, pull the tab on thebottom of the filter, which will release the filter

from the housing

(see diagram).

Always ensure that the new filter cartridge ispushed fully home into the housing.

STERILISING

When cleaning the water system at the start ofthe season it is recommended that a new filtercartridge is fitted.

WINTER USE

If caravanning in the winter there is a possibilitythat the water in the outside container willfreeze, therefore please discuss with yourretailer the fitting of a winterisation kit.

CARVER COMPACT

On the Compact Water Filter System Housing, raise the lid, clean both the water socket andthe plug of the pump assembly. Plug the pumpassembly into the socket. Turn the top securityclip anti-clockwise and the bottom securityclip clockwise to lock the plug in place.

Place the pump into the water container, ensuring that it is fully submerged beforeoperating the system. A dust cover is availableto stop contaminants falling into the water.

DO NOT REMOVE BY PULLING THE HOSEOR ELECTRIC CABLE.

HOW TO USE A WATERLINE WITH THEINBOARD WATER TANK.

1. Place the pump switch on the controlpanel to the 0 position.

2. Place tap next to the tank into the centreposition. See diagram below.

3. Connect waterline to water inlet on side ofcaravan.

4. Turn on waterline

5. While the waterline is in use the pumpswitch on the control panel must remain inthe 0 position.

6. Ensure that you return the tap next to thetank to the inline position when you wishto return to using the inboard tank.

TELEVISION & FM RADIO AERIAL

The Status omni-directional aerial is fitted tomost ranges.

OPERATING THE SYSTEM

1. Plug one end of the fly lead into the rear ofyour television and the opposite end intothe television aerial socket.

2. Ensuring that you have an electricalsupply to your caravan, switch on the aerialpower pack (located in a top locker near towhere the aerial is situated) and the LEDwill light.

3. Check that the gain control switch on thepower pack is set to normal NML. Thismay be adjusted depending on the localtelevision transmissions.

4. Turn on the television set and tune in. Thismay be necessary at all new locations.

Interference Problems & Possible Remedies

1. Weak TV Signal This produces a snowypicture which can be caused if you are faraway from the TV station or if there is abuilding or hill between you and the stationblocking the signal. Each TV station has adefined service area where the strength ofthe signal is adequate to give a goodreception. Beyond this boundary of theservice area is a fringe area where the

signal will be weaker thus giving a poorquality picture. The sound from the signal isnot usually affected unless the signal is veryweak.

Remedy Check the gain control on thepower pack is set to NML. Check that yoursignal is not due to a broken or disconnectedlead or poor co-axial plug connections.

2. Strong TV Signal This produces aherringbone pattern type of interferencewhich is caused when you are close to atransmitter or picking up a strong radiotransmission from another source.

Remedy Switch the gain control on thepower pack to LO.

3. Ghosting This is produced when the TVsignal is reflecting from a building orlandmark in your locality creating a doubleor ghost image of the picture.

Remedy If possible try to move to a betterposition away from the obstruction. Generallythe higher the position, the better.

4. Electrical Interference This type ofinterference is commonly caused bydomestic electrical appliances, such asfans, electric shavers, fluorescent lights, inverters, chargers, etc.

Remedy Turning off the offending applianceshould help.

Removing the Aerial

If there are severe height restriction problemsthe aerial may be removed leaving only themounting footplate.

1. Unplug the co-axial in plug from the powerpack.

2. Loosen the two grub screws with an Allenkey.

3. Lift off the aerial dome whilst carefullyfeeding out the co-axial cable with the plugattached.

4. Push the opaque blanking cap into place tocover the central hole to protect from theelements.

5. To replace the aerial, simply reverse theabove procedure.

Some Explorer group products are now fittedwith a seperate radio aerial in order to improveFM radio reception. Where this aerial is fitted itshould be fully extended to achieve the bestresult. Please ensure that it has been fullyretracted before towing your caravan.

46

Page 49: Owners Handbook 2003 - Elddis

This section of the guide is devoted to the care, cleaning and general preservation of yourcaravan in order to retain its showroomcondition.

CLEANING

Under no circumstances should an abrasive orharsh cleaner be used. Do not use a pressurewash as this can disturb mastic seals.

Exterior Painted Body Part of the exterior ofyour caravan, usually the side walls, is acrylicfinished aluminium, which is extremely durableand easy to clean. It is recommended that aproprietary brand wash and wax shampoo withplenty of cold water is used.

GLASS FIBRE REINFORCED PLASTIC

GRP is a light, durable and astonishingly toughconstructional material which can be fabricatedinto all manner of products. It may betranslucent, opaque or coloured, flat or shaped, thin or thick.

The exposed surface of a GRP component on acaravan is always a gel coat surface. This givesthe laminate its colour and surface finish. Thegel coats used are made to the higheststandards to give optimum performance ingloss retention and UV stability. GRPcomponents need to be washed, waxed andtaken care of like a car. Chemicals and dirt can

collect during storage, and the gel coat can bestained or marked when chemicals combinewith rain or dew. Most stains or marks can beremoved with mild dishwashing detergent, butmore stubborn marks may require a (fine grit)rubbing compound such as T-cut.

To help keep your GRP components lookingalmost like new, it is wise to wash the partsmonthly (or more frequently) using milddishwashing detergent, but avoid using strongalkaline (e.g. tri-sodium phosphate) or acidiccleaners or abrasives. Waxing the componentsonce or twice a year with a good grade pastewax will help to maintain the colour and finish.

A significant benefit of using GRP componentsis the ability to repair most scratches or damagethat may be inflicted upon the panel. GRPcomponents are tough, but like any otherproducts they can be damaged. Excessivepressure or impact to the face or reverse of thecomponent can cause the gel coat to crack. This does not mean the entire panel isdamaged and the standard industry method ofdealing with such a crack is to apply a minorrepair.

Any scratches or nicks that occur in normal usecan usually be removed with rubbingcompound. If the scratch is too deep, then (finegrade) wet sandpaper may be used followed byrubbing compound and finally wax.

One of the characteristics of GRP is the waylight may be transmitted through thecomponent. If the component is viewed fromthe gel coat side it will appear opaque and of asolid colour. However, if viewed from thereverse side with a strong light source behindthe laminate, some light will be transmitted. This is normal for components of this thickness.

Under no circumstances should alcohol, spiritor solvent-based liquids be used on GRP orplastic panel as these substances may reactwith the material and cause visible damaged

ACRYLIC WINDOWS

Your caravan is fitted with shatter resistantacrylic windows. To preserve their clarity andunblemished transparency it is essential thatthe following cleaning instructions are strictlyadhered to:

Road grit, dust, sand, flies, lime tree secretions, bird droppings etc., should be swilled off usingplenty of cold water. Any remaining dirt shouldbe washed off using a soft cloth and warmwater. Under NO circumstances should anyabrasive cleaning agents, householddetergents or proprietary cleaning fluids beused.

Wash the window again using only cold waterand dry off with a chamois leather.

CARE OF YOUR CARAVAN

47

Page 50: Owners Handbook 2003 - Elddis

CARE OF YOUR CARAVAN

Note: Should scratches appear on theacrylic windows these can often be removedwith an acrylic polish, i.e. ICI perspex polish.Gentle polishing with a liquid metal polish,i.e. Brasso may also have the desired effect consult your retailer BEFORE attemptingto remove any but the slightest scratch.

Interior Walls

Your caravan interior walls are finished with avinyl coating and will only require a wipe overwith a damp cloth, using a mild detergent, tokeep them in a showroom condition.

Furniture

Treat your caravan furniture as you would thefurniture in your home. Polish wood surfacessparingly with a good quality wax or spraypolish. Use a damp cloth to clean melanatelaminated surfaces.

Carpets, Upholstery and Curtains

Vacuum clean carpets and upholstery to ensurea long life. Marks on cushions can be removedusing a mild upholstery shampoo with theminimum of water. Curtains check themanufacturers label for washing instructions.

Shower Room and Wash Basin Fittings

These should be cleaned using a non abrasivehousehold cleaner.

Always put the cold water into the hand basinbefore adding the hot in order to preserve thefinish of the thermoplastic formed basin.

WATER SYSTEMS

The water systems, and in particular storagetanks, in caravans are susceptible tocontamination by bacteria if care is not takenwith their use and cleaning. The symptomscaused by bacterial contamination are notpurely limited to gastro-intestinal diseases, butmay also manifest themselves as ear, nose, throat, eye or skin infections. It is thereforeimportant that you carry out the followingprocedure prior to using the caravan each time, even if you boil or filter all water you use fordrinking.

CONTAINERS

1. All water remaining in the container shouldbe disposed of so that the container isempty. (If the container is an onboard tank,it should be removed is possible).

2. The outside of the container should bethoroughly cleansed and washed down to

remove any dirt, dust or other contaminant.Water at a suitably hot temperaturecontaining an appropriate detergent isrecommended for this purpose.

3. Water should be put into the container, swirled round, then emptied out.

4. The container should then be totally filledwith water containing an appropriatedisinfectant/sterilant solution and allowed tostand for the recommended contact time(e.g. Milton for 15 minutes).

5. The solution should be emptied from thecontainer.

6. The opening of the container should becleaned thoroughly with an appropriatepre-prepared wipe impregnated with adisinfectant/sterilant.

7. The container should be inverted whilststored overnight (if possible).

8. The container must be filled with mainswater only and mains water only should beused for the above cleaning procedure.

9. On no account should garden hoses beused to fill water tanks.

48

Page 51: Owners Handbook 2003 - Elddis

CARE OF YOUR CARAVAN

Systems

1. Drain down the system. (Open all taps toallow air in, enabling the system to drainquickly.)

2. Remove any water filters fitted, and replacewith a short length of hose or empty filtercartridge (this will ensure the filter is notaffected by the disinfectant/sterilantsolution).

3. Fill the system by using the pump with adisinfectant/sterilant solution. (Check thatthe solution at full strength appears at alltaps/showers). Allow to stand for therecommended period of time.

4. Drain the system down completely.

5. Thoroughly clean the outside of alltaps/connectors with a cloth soaked in thedisinfectant/sterilant.

6. Flush the system through with cleandrinking water until no traces ofdisinfectant/sterilant can be detected at anytap.

7. Replace the filter.

Suitable sterilising chemicals are available fromyour Explorer Group Retailer, accessory shop, chemists, or home-brew shops. It is not,

however, recommended to use bleach orsodium metabisulphide.

Storage

If the caravan is to be stored for any length oftime, especially over the winter period, thefollowing operations are recommended:

Remove all linens, blankets, cushions, clothes, mattresses, etc. which could be affected bydamp conditions. Clean the caravan inside andout as detailed in the previous section.

Drain off the water system.

Ensure all windows, roof lights and doors arecorrectly fastened. Check fixed ventilationapertures are not obstructed.

Check that the site you have chosen to storethe caravan is open, fairly high and dry and ifpossible not exposed to gales etc. If this provesimpossible it is recommended that the caravanchassis is anchored to the ground.

Jack up the caravan (use bottle or screw jack,do NOT use the corner steadies) so that thewheels are clear of the ground. Support thecaravan axle with wooden blocks, axle standsor similar so that when the jacks are removedthe wheels remain clear of the ground. Lowerthe corner steadies to just site the caravan.Cover the tyres to prevent deterioration.

Release the handbrake. Rotate the wheels atregular intervals to maintain wheel bearinglubrication. Grease the coupling and shroud in awaterproof protective cover.

Security: Lowering and locking the cornersteadies and removing the wheels reduces therisk of caravan theft.

Note: Do not work under the caravan unlessthe corner steadies are down and the axle issupported.

Should the caravan be stored for a prolongedperiod of time it is strongly recommended thatthe caravan is fully serviced before thecommencement of use. Your retailer will ensurethat your caravan is safe, secure and ready foryour enjoyment.

Note: Caravans stored for any length of timeshould not have the handbrake or brakesapplied. The wheels should be chocked orwedged and the handbrake released. Thehitch head should be checked to see that itis fully extended and that there is no load onthe braking system.

49

CARE OF YOUR CARAVAN

DRAINING DOWN YOUR WATER SYSTEM.

It is essential that you drain down your caravanwater system when it is not in use. This is mostimportant during winter months to protect againstfrost damage.

1. Disconnect the water pump and switch ofpower supply.

2. Open the safety drain valve on the waterheater located next to the water heater.

3. Open all taps and remove all plugs fromsinks and showers. Lever operated tapsshould have the lever put into the upposition.

4. Where fitted open the internal drain valves.

5. Open the drain outlets on the outside of yourcaravan.

6. If an inboard water tank is fitted ensure thatthe drain tap on the tank is open.

7. Adjust the level of the caravan to ensure thatthe drain outlet is at the lowest point of thecaravan. This will aid the flow of water toensure all water is drained off.

8. After 30 minutes level the caravan andprepare it for storage if necessary.

MAINTENANCE OF YOUR CARAVAN

BPW CHASSIS

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

The following maintenance instructions relate toBPW Rubber axles, torsion bar axles, overrunhitches and chassis. They are a constituent partof the warranty conditions. Adhere to thepertinent operating instructions of the vehiclemanufacturer or respectively of the othervehicle component manufacturers.

Execution of the maintenance work inaccordance with the prescribed intervals isessential in order to maintain the operatingsafety and roadworthiness of the vehicle.

The elimination of any defects found or thereplacement of any worn parts should beassigned to a BPW after-sales serviceworkshop, wherever the vehicle user does nothave at its disposal appropriately skilledin-company workers and the necessarytechnical facilities.

When fitting spare parts only genuine BPWparts may be used, in order that the typeapproval retains its validity in accordance withnational and international regulations.

The type approval lapses if parts used on avehicle are altered, the properties of which areprescribed, having been clearly established bymeans of a test procedure or, the operation of

which is able to cause danger to other roadusers. According to Section 19, Subsection 2 ofthe StVZO (German Highway Code), thisapplied to axles, wheel brakes and the entirebraking system. All essential parts of the wheelbrake are defined in the EC test report, complete with BPW drawing numbers. It is notallowed to change these.

BASIC PRINCIPLES

Never overload axles, brakes or chassis

Therefore:

Do not overload your vehicles in excess ofthe permissible total weight.

No one-sided loading as due to this thecaravan or trailer will lean to one side. Thisis particularly so in the case ofcaravans, where the load should be stowedover the axle and as low as possible tooptimize road holding and achieve the bestpossible braking effect.

Ensure that wheels and tyres are notoverloading so much that wheels are out ofalignment or tyres are centrifugallyunbalanced.

No over stressing of the hitch orsuspension system due to foolish or

aggressive driving or mishandling. Avoidsubjecting the axles to any impacts orjolting. Adapt your driving speed at all timesto the road conditions and the loadcondition of the trailer. This appliesparticularly when negotiating bends.

Operating instructions which should alsobe adhered to by the driver

- Prior to each run -

INSPECTIONS

 Tyre pressure/tyre condition

 Wheel fastening

Operation of lighting and braking systems.

Raise and secure drawbar jockey wheel. The jockey wheel should be parallel to thedirection of travel at all times.

Inspect the hitch. The hitch jaw must fullyenclose the ball-head and be locked. Checkthe coupling head fastenings at regularintervals for firm seating.

Secure the breakaway cable to the tractionvehicle.

Release parking brake before setting off.

52

Page 55: Owners Handbook 2003 - Elddis

HANDLING (OPERATION)

COUPLING AND UNCOUPLING

The trailer hitch (ball-head hitch) on your BPWchassis is design-tested. The maximum load, supported at the coupling point must becomplied with and has the added safety featureof Click On when fully located on the towingball.

Lower drawbar jockey wheel to the ground.Reverse the car up to the trailer or, in the caseof a small trailer, manoeuvre the trailer up to thecars trailer coupling.

COUPLING:

Open coupling jaw by pulling lever H vigorouslyupwards in the direction of the arrow until leverlocks open. Lower the opened hitch onto theball-head vehicle coupling and the lever willautomatically release. Closing and locking arecarried out automatically.

Connect the breakaway cable and electricalplug to the traction vehicle.

Crank jockey wheel fully upwards and secure.Release parking brake before setting off.

Visual check: the ball-head may no longer bevisible in coupled condition.

UNCOUPLING:

Lower the jockey wheel down. Disconnectbreakaway cable and electrical plug. Pull leverH vigorously upwards in the direction of thearrow and hold. Wind down jockey and lift thetrailer off the ballhead of the traction vehicle.

Then secure the trailer by applying the parkingbrake.

WS 3000 Safety Coupling

Single-Lever System

The single-lever system, designed byWINTERHOFF for coupling and stabilising, provides for swift, effortless handling:

Coupling

Place the open ball coupling device on thegrease-free ball. By exerting downwardpressure - in most cases the drawbar load willbe sufficient - the ball coupling device and thelock will close automatically.

Stabilising

Continue to push the lever down to the stop toactivate the stabiliser

Uncoupling

Slowly pull the coupling lever upwards todeactivate the stabiliser. Continue to pull thecoupling lever up and, at the same time, brieflypush down the lock to the stop and removethe open ball coupling device, in this position, from the ball.

MAINTENANCE OF YOUR CARAVAN

Maintenance work

Check wheel bolts for firm seating - after thefirst run under load conditions, likewise aftereach wheel change -

Tighten wheel bolts crosswise using atorque wrench to the tightening torque incompliance with the table.

Tightening torques of wheel bolts

Check brake play, if necessary readjust -after the first run under load conditions, then every 2000-3000 kilometres -

The check is carried out visually on thestroke (x) of the overrun hitch.

As soon as this reaches more than 50 mmwhen the brakes are applied sharply, adjustthe wheel brakes.

Check brake lining wear - every 5000kilometres -

The brake lining wear is dependent on the

style of driving. Careful driving saves brakelinings and tyres. As soon as a brake lininghas been worn to a thickness of 1 mm, thebrake shoe has to be replaced. Stiff orstretched brake springs, the coils of whichare no longer closed tightly together, mustalso be replaced.

For visual check re-insert the plug (arrow)out of the brake plate.

ADJUSTING THE WHEEL BRAKES

- every 2000-3000 kilometres of travel -

Jack up the trailer. Release the overrun hitchand handbrake lever and brake linkage (freefrom tension).

Lock the swivel cams of the wheel brake fromthe outside by means of auxiliary tool (item A,pin Ø 4 mm) through the tracing bore.

Tighten the adjusting nuts (item C) on wheelbrakes with a screwdriver (item B) or a wrenchby using the adjusting bolt (item D) until thewheel locks up.

Centre the brake shoes by actuating theparking brake several times.

Version 1: Turn the adjusting bolt backwardsuntil the wheel is running free in direction oftravel (approx. 1 full turn of the adjusting bolt).

MAINTENANCE OF YOUR CARAVAN

ECO Compact bearings are recognizable bytheir cylindrical cap shape and the sign ECO.

ECO Compact bearings comply with the state ofthe art. They are maintenance-free due topermanent lubrication and are designed forlarge mileages.

The brakes are more quickly accessible.

ECO hub bearings are simply extracted bymeans of the integrated axle nut.

Tightening torque: 280 Nm

(No bearing play adjustment)

If noticeable bearing play is felt, the ECOCompact bearing should be replaced

Check hub caps for firm seating

- every 2000-3000 kilometres -

Check the firm seating with a screwdriver.

Check coupling head - initially, then every5000 kilometres or annually.

Check coupling head for wear and correctoperation.

Check the wear indicator (drive within the+ range only).

Check the coupling head fastenings (1) atregular intervals for firm seating.

Check drawbar, handbrake, lever, springactuator, deviation lever, linkage and allmoveable parts as to movability - initially, then every 5000 kilometres or annually.

SPARE WHEEL CHASSIS MOUNTED

Each caravan chassis has a set of punchedholes immediately behind the axle to enablefitting of a telescopic spare wheel carrier.

The carrier is of extra strong, lightweightconstruction and zinc plated for all weatherprotection. It is easy to fit and accepts allconventional wheel sizes.

SPARE WHEEL CARRIER (mounted in the gaslocker) On certain models the spare wheel issecured to the front bulkhead inside the frontgas locker.

TYRES

Please refer to your caravan specification sheetwhich is contained within this handbook forinformation regarding tyre pressures and axleloads.

PRESSURES

It is customary for manufacturers to mark tyreswith load and inflation data. This informationrelates to the use of the tyre on cars. For use oncaravans, BS AU50, Part 1, Section, allows foran increase of 10% in load carrying capacity, with a corresponding increase in tyre pressure.

It is dangerous to drive with under inflated tyres. The pressures (cold) recommended by themanufacturers should be regarded as aminimum.

Pressure checks, including those on the sparetyre, should be made with the tyres cold andusing an accurate pressure gauge. The checksshould be carried out before each journey andat regular intervals during storage. If a jockeywheel is fitted with a pneumatic tyre, thepressure should be 25 to 30psi (1.7 to 2 bar).

TYRE WEAR AND DAMAGE

The legal requirements for tread depth on motorvehicle tyres applies also to caravans. Similarly,it is not permitted to mix cross-ply and radialtyres on the same axle. A redundant tyre mustbe replaced by one of the same size andconstruction.

Wheels should be balanced and changed roundoccasionally to equal wear and prolong the lifeof the tyres. A tyre should be renewed if ablister, rupture or cut exposing the casing isdetected. If the tyre has suffered violent impact(e.g. against a kerb), it should be examined bya specialist as soon as possible.

Note:It is customary for tyre manufacturers tomark tyres with load and inflation data. It isimportant to understand that this informationrelates only to the use of tyres on cars. BritishStandard (BS AU50 Part 1 Section 1) allows foran increase in tyre pressure for caravan use.THE CONCESSION APPLIES PROVIDEDTHAT SPEEDS OF 100kph (62mph) ARE NOTEXCEEDED.

As from April 1987 the speed limit in the UKwhen towing a caravan was raised from 50mphto 60mph where permitted.

Page 64: Owners Handbook 2003 - Elddis

MAINTENANCE OF YOUR CARAVAN

16.When parking, the handbrake lever MUSTALWAYS be engaged into the fully uprightposition (90°). This is to compress the springwithin the spring cylinder and thereby create anenergy store which will automatically engagethe brakes further should the caravan move. Ifdifficulty is experienced in this operation, tryeasing the caravan backwards with one handwhile engaging the handbrake fully with theother. This manoeuvre should not be attemptedon a rearwards facing slope. In this case wheelchocks should be used combined with thehandbrake.

17.Finally, if the road wheels have beenremoved, re-tighten using a calibrated TorqueWrench to 88 Nm (65 lbs/ft) - on all M12 wheelbolts - in sequence, i.e. North, South, East,West NOT clock or anti clockwise. Rememberto over tighten is just as dangerous as to under-tighten, as this can distort the wheel rims. Avoidthe use of power wrenches.
