On Saturday, April 4, 1970, eventual PBA Hall of Famer Don Johnson had already locked up the Firestone Tourna-ment of Champions title with his 11th consecutive strike at Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn, Ohio. As opponent Dick Ritger and millions of ABC-TV fans watched, Johnson threw what appeared to be another perfect shot in pursuit of a $10,000 perfect game bonus.

But the 10 pin stood, and Johnson fell to the approach in disbelief and disappointment. That iconic image, captured

on black-and-white film by an Akron Beacon-Journal photographer, is arguably the most reproduced photo in bowling history, and it spawned an artistic interpretation by Marc Moon that graced the cover of the 1971 PBA Tour Program.

Johnson’s historic 299 also has been selected as the “most memorable moment” in the PBA’s 60-year history, as

revealed during Sunday’s ESPN telecast of the Go Bowling! PBA 60th Anniversary Classic from Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis. That moment along with the other “top 10” moments kicked off the unveiling of all 60 “most memorable moments” that will be revealed, one a day, Monday through Friday, on the PBA’s social media outlets beginning next Monday and continuing until all 60 moments are announced.

The top 10 – which were previewed to the more than 300 attendees at the PBA 60th Anniversary Celebration dinner

and hall of fame ceremonies – include the following. Note the list actually includes 11 “memorable moments” due to a tie for 10th place. Keep in mind the list, selected by a large group of long-time industry veterans, players, PBA officials, etc., is focused on the “most memorable moments” in PBA history, not necessarily the “greatest” accomplishments:

1) Don Johnson’s 299 game in championship game of the 1970 Firestone Tournament of Champions. He fell to floor

after leaving a 10 pin on his final shot, rising to a standing ovation at Riviera Lanes.2) Eddie Elias’ meeting with PBA’s 33 founding members in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1958.3) Kelly Kulick becoming the first woman to win a PBA Tour title in the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions in

Las Vegas.4) Pete McCordic winning a $100,000 bonus with a nerve-wracked 300 game on ABC-TV in 1987.5) Pete Weber striking in the 10th frame to claim a record fifth U.S. Open title by one pin in 2012, then uttering his

famous, “Who Do You Think You Are, I Am!”6) Earl Anthony surpassing the $1 million career earnings milestone for the first time in winning the 1982 PBA

National Championship.7) Del Ballard Jr., needing two strikes and 7 pins to win the 1991 Fair Lanes Open over Pete Weber, gets the first

two but rolls a gutter ball on last shot to lose.8) Mark Roth becoming the first player to convert the 7-10 split in a 1980 televised PBA final.9) Bob Learn Jr. throws 44 out of a possible 48 strikes, including a 300 game, for a record four-game TV total of

1,129 pins to win the PBA Flagship Open in an arena in his hometown of Erie, Pa., in 1996.10) A tie between the 2011 TOC from Red Rock in Las Vegas where Mika Koivuniemi defeated Tom Daugherty

in the biggest margin of victory ever, 299-100 (lowest game ever bowled on TV) and then goes on to win the $250,000 record first prize. It was the PBA’s first live telecast on ABC-TV since 1997. The second half of the tie involves Randy Pedersen needing a strike to defeat Ernie Schlegel to win the 1995 Touring Players Champion-ship. But Pedersen’s seemingly perfect shot leaves a stone 8 pin, prompting Schlegel to go into a wild celebration.

To make sure you don’t miss out, follow the PBA on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ProfessionalBowlersAssociation) or Instagram (pbatour), subscribe to the PBA channel on YouTube (PBABowling) and tweet along on Twitter (@pbatour).

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Barbasol PBA Players Championship top qualifier Jason Bel-monte of Australia and eight-time PBA Tour winner Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa., aver-aged 236.57 as a team to earn top qualifier honors for the Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship presented by BowlerX.com stepladder finals.

After each player’s 30 games of qualifying during the Players Championship earlier in the week and 16 games of Baker format qualifying Friday, Belmonte and O’Neill led the field with a 17,979 pinfall total at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

The Doubles Championship will be taped by ESPN Sunday at 2 p.m. after the Barba-sol PBA Players Championship live finals which are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Fans can also catch the livestream of the Roth/Holman Doubles finals on ESPN3.

The Doubles Championship will air on ESPN March 25 at 11 a.m. Belmonte and O’Neill, looking for their first doubles title, held a commanding 327-

pin lead over 2016 PBA Player of the Year EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind., and four-time tour winner Marshall Kent of Yakima, Wash., who finished second with a 17,652 pinfall. Kent also qualified second for the Players Championship finals.

For Belmonte and O’Neill it’s their fourth consecutive Doubles Championship finals appearance having finished fourth in their three previous appearances. Kent and Tackett will be hoping to improve on their runner-up finish in 2017.

Qualifying third were Kris Prather of Milton, Fla., who qualified third for the Players Championship finals, and Brandon Novak of Chillicothe, Ohio, with a 17,382 pinfall.

Texans DJ Archer and Shawn Maldonado qualified fourth combining for a 17,316 pinfall. Archer will be trying for his third PBA Tour and Maldonado his first.

Brothers Michael and Darren Tang of San Francisco moved from seventh after the day’s first Baker round to take the fifth qualifying spot with a 17,273 pinfall. The Tang’s, former collegiate standouts at San Jose State, combined for games of 249, 226, 185, 277, 290, 213, 257 and 205 to beat out two-time doubles champions PBA Hall of Famer Norm Duke and 10-time tour winner Wes Malott who finished sixth with 17,201.

In 2017 Michael, 22, finished second in the United States Bowling Congress Masters, and Darren, 24, finished fourth. Both players will be trying for their first PBA Tour title.

The Baker format requires each player on the team to alternate frames in the game to combine for one score.

Skechers, one of America’s leading footwear manufac-turers, has joined the lineup of advertisers participating in the 2018 Go Bowling! PBA Tour telecast series on ESPN.

“Skechers is excited to be a part of the current schedule

of PBA Tour telecasts on ESPN. The audience of the PBA Tour fits our demographic profile nicely for our ‘wide fit’ line promoted by Howie Long and our line of Skechers slip resistant “work” footwear,” said Skechers Senior Vice President of Advertising Gary Patrick.

PBA’s series of live telecasts in February will be fol-

“You could say there was more pressure on some shots than others, but in reality, there’s pressure on every shot,” Smallwood added. “I’m not complaining, this is what I live for.”

It marked the second consecutive major that the winner won all four stepladder matches for the title. Shirley was a founding member of the PWBA and a charter member of the organization’s Hall of Fame in 1995. She was inducted into the WIBC (USBC) Hall of Fame in 1971. She was also inducted into the World Bowling, Illinois and Chicago Halls of Fame.

Shirley Garms did it all. She won titles, set records and became a Hall of Famer. Shirley Garms is a legend.

Shirley winning a National Title at the age of 54 was and still is a BIG DEAL. As a senior bowler she beat the best bowlers in the world, in their prime. It’s a BIG DEAL because a senior winning a National Title is rare. I can’t remember any other senior woman to win a National Title. Also, Her win may be a record by making her the oldest woman to win a National Title.

I am a senior bowler. Shirley Garms winning a Na-tional Title as a senior is MY INSPIRATION to continue competing against younger strikers.

I saw Shirley bowl in Florida in the early 1980’s on the new Ladies Professional Bowlers Tour (LPBT). By then she was in her 60’s and still competing against profes-sionals thirty to forty years her junior. Greats like Donna Adamek, Tish Johnson, Robin Romeo, Aleta Sill and Lisa Wagner were rookies back then and learning from Shir-ley. Other greats like Carolyn Dorin Ballard and Wendy McPherson weren’t even on tour yet.

I didn’t know Shirley personally but I did watch her compete. I wasn’t a friend of hers but I was a fan. I didn’t know if Shirley was a nice person but I did know that when I saw her bowl she conducted herself professionally. I REMEMBER SHIRLEY GARMS for her big smile, her class and grace. It’s been three and a half decades but I still remember Shirley Garms.

I was a young fella back then while Shirley was a se-nior. At the time I didn’t appreciate what she was doing. Now as a senior bowler myself I am amazed at how she competed against bowlers half her age. She was fearless. That’s why Shirley Garms is MY SENIOR INSPIRA-TION.

I REMEMBER SHIRLEY GARMS and salute her for being a great bowler and outstanding example for all se-nior bowlers. Shirley Garms is MY SENIOR INSPIRA-TION as I compete as a senior bowler.

TEN PIN FUN CENTER IN TURLOCKTURLOCK – I received work recently from Mike Buzick who is in charge of the desk personnel and leagues this

coming year at the new Ten Pin Fun Center in Turlock. He informed me that all leagues would be starting in May and maybe with some short leagues with only 15 weeks. He did say the center would have all leagues with scratch, handi-cap, seniors, and youth league running 33 to 24 weeks, the normal league schedule.

The fall leagues will start up on August 17 featuring 16 leagues. The word floating around Bellevue Bowl is that the leagues in Turlock would not start until 2020, which it is now wrong. Ten Pin just finished stuccoing the North and West walls last week.

The tentative bowling schedule for the coming fall season that I received will feature five leagues from short season leagues, senior leagues, afternoon leagues, and evening leagues to youth leagues, scratch and handicap. Rod Scott, one of the owners and builder of the new entertainment center that everything is going on schedule. Call Mr. Buzick for more information on his league schedule at 209-541-6381.

Final men and women scores will be paid out the week after the tournament. If you want in, contact Jeff Hurley, Tournament Director at 209-928-9437 he can sign you up over the phone.

CHANGES IN BOWLING CENTERS: There was a lot of talk last Friday during McHenry Bowl’s senior no-tap among bowlers about the purchase of the Manteca Bowl. Plans are that the center will become Bowlero Manteca in the coming weeks. If you remember Rodeo Lanes in Clovis was owned by AMF has been change to Bowlero Clovis. A few weeks ago I told you about Bowlero Fresno and Bowlero Visalia will open on Sept. 23. AMF Bowlmor owns a large amount of bowling centers in the USA.

THE 10TH FRAME: We lost a senior bowlers who was learning the sport of bowling. He was a long time golfer playing in Chowchilla and Madera. Joh Sagain, age 69 passed away last Friday night in Merced. He recently retired from the City of Merced after years as a planner and an architect. His wife, Gayle has bowling in the Bellevue Senior league at Bellevue Bowl in Atwater for years. John wanted to try his hand at the sport of bowling. The first time I saw him on the lanes, I was cracking up. He was wearing a pair of golf shorts I think? We both had a chuckle about it. Later on he wore long pants, some times shorts. He started getting interested in bowling as he purchased his own ball after using the bowling centers balls. I gave him a few tips, just like the rest of us did in the league. Always trying to help new bowlers. He also had Sagin Sportscrds that he ran every Saturday at the market on Childs Avenue for over 20 years. He had a great time bowling. All of us in the senior league will miss him.

ANAHEIM – This Friday morning in the 590 Classic saw only one bowler able to break the 900 barrier - Hong Kha powered his ball to produce games of 266-236-190 and 225 to score a league-leading set of 917. Hong has a sim-ple game and he says the one rule he has taught himself is not to think too much; know the mark you plan to hit and just throw the ball! It helps also to be able to throw your ball with considerable speed -- one can dream...

Lefty Terry Brent found the lanes to his liking (he loves a challenge), and stroked 256-221-195 and 215 to close the day at 887.

Dick McKenzie is always in the loop and this morning he found his line on games of 207-243-187 and 247 for a fine 884.

Andrea Fredericks...’girl power’ - showed she is a force on the lanes and showed off her “power” on games of 219-204-218 and added a 233 to score 874.

Our league-leading high average recipient, Ryan Sar-gent turned in games of 235-217-188 and 228 for 868.

Steve Sparks came to the party and tossed 235-2=56-165 and 200 to end with 856.

Chris Hefner had a mediocre day for him but still man-aged 236-247-189 and 181 to score 853.

The last bowler to score in the 850’s - Louie Juarez, per-formed pretty consistently on games of 221-226-213 and 192 for an 852.

Hot Games: Alan Bloom 259, Don Gardner 255, Norm Walker 255, Sandy Magana 248, Nick Lam 245, Ron Dou-glass 242, Frank Bellinder 238, David Yeoman 235, Al Lara 227, Karen Bagnall 226, Orlando Vanegas 225, Willy Bor-denave 224,Rich Heid 224, Makcha Nelson 222, Dan Mil-stead 218, Janet Anderson 215, Juan Sandoval 215, Larry Green 213, Carl Adinolfi 210, Blake Douglass 208, Cheryl Munson 203, Mark Guillaume 202 and Rob Roberts 200. Until next week...

LAKE ELSINORE – After taking last Saturday off, the Saturday Sport league members returned to Pins ‘N Pock-ets ready for their third and final week on the ever-difficult 2012 PBA US Open oil pattern. It was definitely chilly in the center this morning and most everyone spoke of the cold in their bowling balls and muscles. It doesn’t seem like ten minutes of warm-up is enough time on cold mornings like that. Nevertheless, the arrows came up and it was time to roll shots for score.

Games Over Average: Mark McLeavy +20, Jasmine Werdel +21, Evelyn Lalas +29 +26, Rody Fetalvo +31, Scott Everson +47, and Steve Lertpaichaiyon +52.

Series Over Average: Rody Fetalvo +54, Scott Ever-son +58, and Evelyn Lalas +61

Games Over 200: Rody Fetalvo and Scott Everson 202, Ken Clay 214, and Shammon Williams 231.

Bowler of the Week: The above scores tell the partial story of one particular bowler who bowled consistently well for all three games. That bowler had games of +6, +29 and +26 for a very nice over average series of 61 pins. That is an accomplishment to be proud of on this lane condition. Congratulations to the Pins n Pockets Bowler of the Week Evelyn Lalas!

DOWNEY — It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough as Threadworks moved into 1st place in Round 5 by sweep-ing past The Professional Approach 5-0. The US Open pat-tern was playing especially tough tonight as most teams struggled. Paul Varela led the charge to the top, as he fired a very nice 604 series to lead the sweep. Danny Ly led Power House Video Games to a sweep of their own, as they took down Blizz Yogurt 5-0. Danny shot 625, while Greg Neuer led Blizz with 581. Team DV8 is once again in contention for the round lead, as Sam Hitchcock winged his way to 242/623 and led DV8 to a 4-1 win over Linder Insurance.

Linder was paced by Kurt Arakaki 592 and Kevin Val-monte 591. In the best scoring match of the night, Pino’s Pizza prevailed 3-2 as they held off Alhambra Coin Center to win Team Totals by 13. Both teams bowled well, finishing as #1 and #2 scoring teams for the night, and their pair was 250 pins higher than any other two teams combined scoring for a pair. Leading the way for Pino’s was Ramon Torres 627 & Leonard Ruiz 600, while Alhambra was led by Doug Kempt 660 & Steve Gaucin 608. Herzog Insurance took a 4-1 win over the PJ-less Los Altos Trophies team as Mikey Villarreal shot 625 for the winners, while Top Dog for the night went to Los Altos’ Buddy Lucas with a very fine 670.

In the roll off team matches, it was Erickson Foods once again losing the first two games, only to come back strong in Game 3 and not only win the game, but Team Totals. Er-ickson pulls within 2.5 games of holding the #1 seed with the 3-2 win, as nobody managed to shoot 600 series, Herbert

Jones led the way for Keystone Lanes with 589, while Jason Buenviaje shot 563 for Ericksons. Charlie Kinstler shot 614 to lead SYSCO to a 5-0 sweep of Forest Lanes who strug-gled all night to catch SYSCO. Mason Man O’Lantern Sher-man topped Forest with 589. American Harvest Vodka out shot CASAMIGO’S Tequila and won 4-1 as Kevin Jones rolled 588, while Vernon Adams topped the Tequila team with 565. Mike Jennings shot 594 to lead Tifco Industries to a 4-1 win over BOWLIUM, who had the pair’s high series, Craig Stevens with 623. Matt Mosley powered his way to 255 & 638 to lead Cook’s Bowling Supply to a 5-0 sweep over J.A.T. DeeRonn Booker led the Junior Amateur Tour team with 549. In the final pairing, it was GJC Services win-ning 3 points as Juan Zavala topped his squad with 511.

Sidepot winners were Game 1 – Sam Hitchcock 242 Game 2 –Jason Buenviaje 226 however the Financial Advi-sor’s pot was won by Buddy Lucas 225 for $240 with Leon-ard Ruiz Jr. 2nd place with 223 for $100. Game 3 Super Pot went to Mikey Villarreal 255, quite the contrast from last week where you needed 11 strikes or more to win. The TRUE ANCHOR award goes to a new winner, Barry Couch Jr. collected the honors with a 3 game set of 361.

One more week on the dreaded US Open shot to try and move into the Round Lead, improve your standing, or move up the ladder in the Roll Off seedings. I’m sure most can’t wait for May to get here, since we will be finished with this pattern. Hope to see you all down at Del Rio next Monday in Downey. Have a blessed week everyone!

RAMON TORRES LAPS THE FIELD WITH HIS 300/790 SERIES - CAL BOWL IMPROVES TO 10-0by Mike Cammarata

DOWNEY – Heading into the second week of this round in the Brunswick Invitational, only Cal Bowl had a perfect record of 5-0. Six teams were right behind them though at 4-1, and would all be fac-ing each other on Monday night. Even though it’s early in the round, every night seems to be a must win situation in the position round every week format, especially with short rounds of seven weeks each.

Keystone Lanes had the most total pins of all the teams at 4-1, so they drew Cal Bowl on the top pair of lanes. It turned out to be a bad draw for them. Ramon Torres started his set with a 212 game, but only missedonceinthenexttwogames.Hefinishedwith212-278-300fora 790 series, leading Cal Bowl to a 5-0 sweep in the match. It was a match that had a few bowlers scoring and a few struggling. Leonard Ruiz Jr. helped Ramon with a 227-235/633 set. For Keystone Lanes, Eddie Van Daniker and Herbert Jones both were over 600. The next highest score on the pair was 505.

Paul Barraco shot a 213/234/625 set to lead Sysco to four wins in their match against Los Altos Trophy. With the four wins, Sysco improves to 8-2, and will move up to the top pair next week to face off against Cal Bowl. Mikey Villarreal recently joined the Los Altos team, and was their top bowler tonight with a 203-221/614 series.

Herzog Insurance improved to 8-2 for the round following a 4-1 win over J.A.T. Danny Wilson topped the pair, leading Herzog to the win. Wilson shot a 224/595, and Gary Duran was right behind him with 232/593. Larry Campbell added a 232/574 set for J.A.T., helping themtowinthefinalgamewithhisbigscore.

The next pair of lanes saw Linder’s Insurance and Three Olives Vodkasquareoff. Thefirstgameendedina tie, givingbothteamshalf a point. After that, it was all Linder’s Insurance. Arnold Chees-man topped the pair, leading Linder’s with 220/591. He got help from Harry Wong with a 229 game and Vernon Adams with a very consis-tent 586 set. Michael Montano led Three Olives with 230/569.

The Professional Approach lost the final game in their matchagainst Bowling Guys, but had enough of a lead for totals that they
