Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Amsterdam University Science Teaching JB Goedkoop, Faculty of Science, University of Amsterdam Within the University of Amsterdam, Entrepreneurship and Innovation are educational themes that are rapidly developing, stimulated by the Amsterdam Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE). ACE offers a three pronged program: a 30 EC minor program in Entrepreneurship, a one year MSc program and a 1 week summer school in which students can convert an idea into a business plan through boot camp sessions. ACE Venture Lab organizes the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award to stimulate valorization of research results. In my contribution I will highlight this programme, but also will report on the current developments in the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam (UvA), which offers courses and programmes in almost all aspects of the Exact, Information and Life sciences, characterized by strong interdisciplinary collaborations with other faculties such as Medicine and Psychology. For Science Master students with entrepreneurial interests we have developed the innovative 30 EC Tesla minor. Tesla coaxes students out of their comfort zone by engaging them to work out a complex challenge for a company or societal organization. In this way not only their disciplinary research skills are addressed, but also new personal skills are developed. The Tesla workshops and trainings include: Theatre, Storytelling, Visual thinking, Efficient meetings, Project Management, Communication, Project Planning, Sales, and much more. Furthermore, the Science Faculties of the University of Amsterdam and the Free University (VU) are in the midst of an intensive collaboration effort in both research and education. One of the benefits of the collaboration is that Science Bachelor students interested in working in an innovation setting can enroll in the Science, Business and Innovation Bachelor programme at VU, which also offers a 30 EC minor open for UvA students.

These initiatives provide an effective way to introduce the entrepreneurship “feeling” to Science students and to connect the academic environment more strongly with business and society.

Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg

Meeting of the LERU Vice-Rectors for Learning and Teaching

2 - 3 June 2015, Lund University

Short Summary “Student Entrepreneurship” at the University of Freiburg

Encouraging Students to Become Entrepreneurs

The University of Freiburg’s strategy plan “Windows for Entrepreneurship” aims to build up a university-wide

culture of entrepreneurship that addresses all members of the university, from student to scientist to service

staff members. Main program lines are Awareness raising and mobilization for entrepreneurial thinking and

acting and a modular target-group-specific entrepreneurship teaching and qualification program.

No matter if they are working as a freelancer, founding their own company or working as a dedicated member

in a firm: When students enter the workforce the will benefit from having entrepreneurial expertise. The

University is strongly encouraging students to gain this know-how by holding several opportunities available.

The founding academy (Gründungs-Akademie) at the Center for Key Qualifications (ZfS) offers students

several entrepreneurial modules with relevance for credit points. Students can learn how to make a business

plan and how to realize their own ideas, how to act entrepreneurial and – in a computer-based learning unit -

lead a company. The founders’ office (Gründungs-Büro) is also organizing a regular lecture “Entrepreneurship

– Possible Ways to Self-Employment”, which takes place at a different faculty of the University of Freiburg

every summer semester switching between technical and arts faculties. Furthermore, every student is eligible

to visit the founders’ office and get advice on how to make a business idea reality.

Page 14: overview Student Entrepreneurship at LERU member universities · ACE Venture Lab organizes the Amsterdam Science & Innovation Award to stimulate valorization of research results

• Innovation encompasses creative and lateral ways of thinking, connecting and problem-solving.

• It takes many forms, including academic research, entrepreneurial activity, social entrepreneurship and cultural engagement.

• Innovative students and researchers will exchange knowledge across disciplinary and institutional boundaries, and will adapt and incorporate ideas from other sectors, cultures, and times.

• They will take risks, and show leadership, in realising the latent potential of their intellectual capital.
