Overview: BOA GmbH is a systems supplier that provides specialised IT and telecommunications solutions to customers throughout Germany and Europe. Founded in 1994, the family-run business is based in Laupheim, Germany with additional business units including BOA Technology Finance GmbH and BOA Business Solutions GmbH. Its portfolio includes solutions in the IT infrastructure, security, communication, hospitality and building management sectors.

Situation: It had become apparent that a new virus protection solution was needed for BOA’s internal IT infrastructure after discovering many weaknesses in the existing system which no longer provided the level of protection required to deal with the increasing incidence of harmful software. This resulted in BOA’s ISP blocking access to the internet on a number of occasions so web applications needed for its daily services were no longer available. Work came to a standstill.

BOA GmbH Product Evaluation:

Managers at the organisation’s head office had to react quickly and immediately tested several anti-virus and security solutions, including the latest versions of TrendMicro, Etrust, Avira and Comodo.

The management board at BOA GmbH had already had their sights on Comodo's SSL certificates and became aware of the supplier's Endpoint Security Manager (ESM) via the website. From a commercial standpoint, the solution outperformed the competition primarily on the basis of its simple licensing model.

Other key decision factors were the ability of Comodo ESM to completely isolate viruses from PCs and other IT hardware and the fact that the solution offered great value for money.

Implementation of Comodo ESM:

After a successful test phase, a number of BOA technicians were assisted in the installation of the new security software. The switch to the ESM took place without disrupting normal business operations.

During the installation process, the technician had to enter a SQL server as a connection point, after which there were only a few settings to be configured in order to adjust the virus protection for the daily, internal working processes.

Initially, some of the programmes used by BOA were were unfamiliar to the system and were quarantined as they could have posed a potential IT threat. These 'clean' programmes were easily unlocked, resulting in no interruption of work for BOA. From this point on, the security solution ran smoothly alongside the IT infrastructure.

Benefits:

BOA GmbH chose Comodo ESM and now recommends it to others because it believes Comodo’s unique architecture makes it the most likely product to keep endpoints virus free.

Comodo ESM takes a different approach to conventional anti-virus software that recognises viruses using so-called pattern files or a black list in order to prevent attacks. The problem with a black list is that the threat is already identified and that the black list file of the anti-virus system has to be kept up-to-date.

Since the weak point is not already known in the case of a zero-day attack, it is impossible for a black list to always be 100% up-to-date and to recognise 100% of threats. Known harmful software may well be identified in this way but unknown malware can still pose a threat to the company's infrastructure.

Comodo realised that this conventional form of virus protection is no longer able to meet today's challenges presented by increasingly adept IT attacks. Comodo

Summary:

Although conventional virus protection solutions may identify malware and other known threats, they do not protect against unknown threats which can still cause harm to company systems. BOA GmbH is firm believer in the Comodo ESM as it completely isolates harmful software, keeping it well away from user PCs sending any suspicious files that routinely appear directly into quarantine.

This protection guarantee not only keeps BOA’s systems and applications safe, but also enables the delivery of a consistently high service due to its reliability.

developed a completely new approach to security: instead of identifying viruses, applications are isolated and analysed for malware, Trojans and other threats. Unknown files are blocked or processed in a virtual environment.

Results:

The Comodo warranty, a 100% protection guarantee, also convinced the Managing Director of BOA, Alexander Boeckh, that Comodo was the best solution internally and for their customers. “Comodo's new approach of preventative isolation or containment technology enables an all new level of security for our organisation”, says Boeckh.
