Symbolism in the Magdeburg cathedral

Having investigated the color symbolism in the Mainz cathedral (911AD) and !rzb"rg cathedral

(initiated 7#7AD) $ visited the ancient Magdeb"rg cathedral% which o&&icially is called the

Cathedral of Saints Catherine and Maurice. 'he ch"rch had been initiated 97AD and etended to

a cathedral &rom 1*+9 , 1-*+.

/ron tht 1+th cent"ry the !rzb"rg cathedral had been e0"ied with two illars labeled 2$achin3

and 2oaz3% in which $achin clearly carries some traces o& red aint. 'hese illars are not located at

their original ositions.

'he main entrance o& the Mainz cathedral is e0"ied with a air o& illars% in which the right illar

is red and the le&t illar is dar5 gray 6 bl"eish blac5 1.

At the end o& *+1- $ investigated the Magdeb"rg cathedral &or color symbolism in the illar airs

and &o"nd some interesting combinations.

Red and blue pillars at the main entrance hall

$mmediately behind the closed &ence (dated 149# AD) o& the main entrance hall there is a red

col"mn at the right side.

Pillars behind the rood screen of the Magdeburg cathedral

$mmediately behind the rood screen o& the Magdeb"rg cathedral another air o& illars seemed to be

colored red bl"e.

'he red illar is &o"nd on the right side behind the rood screen near the stat"e o& 8aint Maurice (ca.

12$% AD)% whereas the bl"e illar is located at he le&t side behind the rood screen near the stat"e o& 8aint Catherine (ca. 12$% AD). 8aint Maurice and 8aint Catherine have been ositioned in oosite

ositions.
