What is Media Class?

Kindergarten-1st

Students visit twice a week, for 30 minute classes.

One class is a Technology based class (computer). Aligned to ISTE’s NETS standards Includes introduction to keyboarding, program and

website navigation, and proper technique and posture. Programs used are: Paint, Tux Paint, Drawing for

Children, Kidspiration, Mavis Beacon (2nd semester for K), Pivot.

One class is a Library day Aligned to ALA’s Infopower Standards (Information

Literacy) Literature appreciation. Book check out. Library is a service, not just a class.

What is Media Class?

2nd -6th

Students visit three times a week, for 30 minutes.

Two Technology classes (computer). Aligned to ISTE’s NETS standards Class web page is www.wix.com/jsugiuchi/pha Mavis Beacon Keyboarding (10 minute warm up). Programs used: Microsoft Office Suite (strong focus),

Kidspiration, Pivot, and Windows Movie Maker. Curriculum is project based. 2nd semester starts to transition into Web 2.0.

User created resources: Blogs, glogs, and web pages.

One a week Library class.Develop Literature Appreciation and

Information Literacy skills. Information Literacy:

Locate and extract information. Both print and digital.

Reading Advocates. Booktalks Book reviews (print, online, video)

Accelerated Reader (AR)

A reading incentive program, designed to measure reading comprehension and development.

AR is not required (exception of 5th/6th), but encouraged.

Students may check out 2 books in Library class, one at their reading level for AR and one just for fun.

Prizes are given monthly.AR Home Connect and the AR App.

Fundraisers

Great library collections are grown, not made. Book Fairs

Upper Division: $3,600.00 Lower Division: $2,000.00

School receives either 50% in stock from Scholastic or 25% in cash.

Children's Book Week Usborne Book Fair (nonfiction orientated) Please send suggestions my way.

Morning News Crew

  Weekly student created news show. Students have named it the JNN. Students brainstorm, write, and film. JNN Advisors currently edit.

Media Goals

Increase student book selection. Subscribe to electronic databases. Increase AR participation. Create a Foreign language book section. Develop a stronger middle school reading selection. Integrate new technology and software. Create a student Media Club. Create a student Book Club. Doing it one bird at a time.
