History

• The Mastroberardino family has been involved in the socio-cultural context of wine-making for almost three centuries.

• The most authoritative reports suggest that someone named Berardino, taking the professional title 'Mastro' - master craftsman - began the lineage in the seventeen hundred.

History Mastroberardino, among the ancient winemaking firms of Italy, is the oldest continuing winery in

Campania In 1878 Cavalier Angelo, great-grandfather of Piero Mastroberardino, started to export the wines

in several foreign countries (Europe, America) His son Michele Mastroberardino brought these wines abroad successfully until World War II After the war his son Antonio Mastroberardino was the family member who saved and re-started

the plantation of the ancient grape varietals in the Region, re-opening international perspectives to the ancient wines of Campania

History

• Mastroberardino is universally acknowledged to have been the most important guardian of the viticultural and oenological heritage of the Roman age.

• Under the patronage of the “Presidenza della Repubblica,” the winery has been appointed to reintroduce vine growing in the ancient city of Pompeii.

Page 10: Overview Estate Owned by: Piero Mastroberardino Wine Region: Campania Winemaker: Massimo Di Renzo Total Acreage Under Vine: 785 Estate Founded: 1878 Winery

History• Today Mastroberardino is one of the most advanced

synthesis of technical competence in the field. • The application of this competence doesn’t aim to change

the fundamental nature and characteristics of the ancient wines, but to preserve their existence and value, and to harmonize them with the evolution of schemes and ideas which represent a distinctive mark of wine tasting.

Philosophy“The world of wine is not a simple, one-dimensional world. It is a world in

which generations try to understand each other and at the same time offer their own contribution. This is a heritage which grows slowly and ponderously, learning from mistakes and difficulties, taking the royal road where possible, which is hardly ever the quickest path. This heritage involves accepting events extensively, without submitting to the siren call of immediate results, affecting the day-to-day work whilst respecting the coherence of the greater vision. All this, and many more great, unlimited factors, lead the members of the Mastroberardino family to see themselves as interpreters, who receive a testimony and in turn pass it on.”

-Mastroberardino

Page 12: Overview Estate Owned by: Piero Mastroberardino Wine Region: Campania Winemaker: Massimo Di Renzo Total Acreage Under Vine: 785 Estate Founded: 1878 Winery

Philosophy• Members of the Mastroberardino family see themselves as interpreters, who receive a

testimony and in turn pass it on. Aware of this, they see their role as being merely as a component of a harmonious process, in which all parts become an indivisible whole, in reverence to the cultural message which this long history embodies and bequeaths.

• The one firm and basic value is the one of loyalty towards one's homeland and origins, and towards one's natural and social environment, as a means of safeguarding a cultural identity.

The Wine• In the venerable history of Aglianico, Taurasi is the 'vigne opime' of the ancient

Taurasia of which Titus Livius tells us about. • Greco di Tufo, made from the Greco grape, was imported by the Hellenes before the

foundation of Rome, and is now found all along the valley of the river Sabato.• Fiano di Avellino, made from the grape of the same name, also known as 'Latino', to

distinguish it from the imported Greco. Pliny named this grape 'apiane', as he noticed that bees preferred it.

• The rescue of these ancient vines from the extinction, the spotting of their cultivation areas after the Second World War and their vinification as single-variety wines, are Mastroberardino family masterwork.
