Northern Samar
Overview
Northern Samar was part of the Samar province until it became an autonomous province by virtue of Republic Act No. 4221, approved on June 19, 1965. The bill was authored by the late Congressman Eladio T. Balite, which divided Samar into three provinces, namely; Samar, Eastern Samar and Northern Samar. Northern Samar’s allure lies in its raw, unexplored, and almost untouched beauty. One attraction that has always left visitors awestruck is the Biri Rock Formations. Chosen as the Icon Destination of Northern Samar by the Department of Tourism, this wind-woven rock structure was also recognized in 2010 as the 7th National Geological Monument. Capital : Catarman Population : 549,759 (NSO Popcen, 2011) Municipality : 24 municipalities Baranggay : 569 baranggays Source: NSCB
Physical Characteristics
Location and Land Area: Gateway from Luzon to Visayas and Mindanao; It is 743 kilometers from Manila; Northern Samar is bounded on the east by the Pacific Ocean; on the north by the San Bernardino Strait; on the west by the Samar Sea; and on the south by the provinces of Eastern and Western Samar. It is a one-hour flight from Manila to Catarman, the capital town of Northern Samar. You can also reach Northern Samar, and also the other provinces of Samar, Leyte, and islands of Visayas and Mindanao via a 14-hour bus travel from Manila through Maharlika Highway to Matnog, Sorsogon, which can be an enjoyable countryside viewing. From Matnog, passengers, vehicles, and cargo are taken across San Bernardino Strait by ferry boats that serve 4-6 trips daily to the ports of Allen or San Isidro. From Cebu, you can take the Cebu-Calbayog ferry, and take a passenger vehicle or hired van for a one-hour road trip (via Lope De Vega Road) to Catarman.
Topography: MAJOR GEOGRAPHICAL OR PHYSICAL FEATURES Northern Samar has a total land area of 3,498 sq. km. or 349,800 hectares. Its shape is akin to the top of a diamond cut. It has a rugged terrain with restricted pocket plains and valleys. River valleys are low-lying and are often interrupted by hills, while the remaining portion is rolling, hilly, and mountainous. The interior of the mainland consists of highly dissected hills and mountain peaks. Low-lying hills are found between the coastal plains of Palapag, the river valley of Gamay, and Catubig Valley. Fifty-two percent (52%) of the area is covered by forest, and 42% is classified as alienable and disposable. Climate: Northern Samar falls under the intermediate type climate, which has no distinct dry and wet seasons. The rainiest months are October to January, while the driest is the month of May.
