    Prologue

Facing the young girl and her little sister, the armoured knight raisedhis sword.

To have mercy was to take away a life in a single strike. Struck by thesunlight, the sword glistened high up in the air.

The girl shut her eyes and bit down on her lower lip. Her expressionshowed that she never wished for this situation. She was simplyaccepting it since there was nothing she could do. If the girl had powerof some sort, she would have used it on the man before her eyes andran away.

ut! the girl had no such power.

Thus there existed only one conclusion.

The girl would surely perish here.

    The sword struck down !

!"et she did not feel any pain.

The girl opened her tightly shut eyes.

The first thing that the girl saw in her world was the sword that had

    stopped in its path downward.

The next thing that entered her sight was its wielder.

He had stopped in motion as though he were encased in ice. Theknight#s attention was no longer on the girl. The completelydefenseless state of the knight clearly revealed the shock that surged

    inside him.

$s though led by the knight#s ga%e, the girl also turned her facetoward the same direction.

    Then! she saw despair.

    There was darkness.

&ure darkness as thin as paper, yet of an unfathomable depth. It hademerged from the ground in an ovoid shape with its lower section cut.

$ scene that evoked mysti'ue with indescribable apprehension.

    A door?

That#s what the girl thought after having seen it..

Then after her heart beat once more, her thought was verified right.

    ()rippp(

    Something fell from the darkness.

The instant she reali%ed what it was!

    *Hiii+

!The girl let out a piercing shriek.

$n existence that no mortal could ever overcome.

-ed orbs swayed like turbid flames inside the hollow orbits of thewhite skull. $s it looked at the two girls, they felt as though it was

staring coldly at its prey. In its hands, devoid of flesh and skin, was asacred yet fearsome staff of sovereign beauty.

It was as though )eath itself, draped in an ornate, et/black robe, wasborn into this world with darkness from another world.

The air fro%e in the blink of an eye.

It was as if time itself had fro%en before the advent of an absolutebeing.

The girl had forgotten to breathe as though her soul was stolen

In this situation, where even sense of time seemed to have vanished, the girl began hyperventilating and breathed as though gasping for air.

!The Grim Reaper has come from the otherworld to take me away.

That#s what the girl had thought, but she soon felt something wasamiss. The knight that was after them had stopped moving as well.

    *0rghh1

    $ 'uiet groan was heard.

2ho was it from3 It felt like it could have been from herself, as well asher shivering little sister, and the knight with his sword raised beforeher eyes.

4ver so slowly, its fingers, destitute of flesh with only their bones, reached out and pointed ! not at the girls, but at the knight, as if tograb something.

She wanted to stop looking, but she was too scared to do so. She feltshe would witness something far more terrifying if she were to lookaway.

    5!6rasp Heart7.

The death incarnate made a clasping gesture, and a loud metallicnoise rang right next to the girl.

She was afraid to avert her eyes to )eath, but pushed by the tinycuriosity from her heart she moved her ga%e and saw the knight layingon the ground. He was no longer moving.

    He was dead.

    "es, dead.

The life/threatening crisis that had closed in on the girl disappearedust like that as if it was all a oke. However, she could not reoicesince )eath had changed its shape and manifested itself in a moreapparent form.

-eceiving the girl#s frightened ga%e, )eath moved towards the girl.

The darkness gathered in the center of her view rose.

    !Its going to envelop me.

Thinking that, the girl hugged her little sister tightly.

The thought of escaping was nowhere in her head now.

If the opponent were a human, she could have taken action with ashred of hope. ut the thing before her eyes was an existence thateasily blew away such notion.

!Please at least let me die a painless death.

&raying was all she could do.

Her little sister was clinging to her waist, 'uivering in terror. Shewanted to save her, but she couldn#t. She could only apologi%e for herpowerlessness. She simply prayed that she wouldn#t feel so lonely, for she was going with her.

Their hands and feet were covered in gauntlets and greavesdecorated with gold, silver and black metals. )onned in armours with

a maid uniform motif, they wore white headdresses instead ofhelmets. 4ach maid was holding a different type of weapon, establishing the image of a maid warrior.

Their hairstyles were also 'uite different from each other buns, ponytail, straight hair, braids, curls, French twist, etc. ut somethingthey all had in common was their transcendent beauty.

$dditionally, the maids were divided into types such as flirty, sporty,

    traditional and other personalities.

$lthough they were @&s and their designer had made them allplayful and uni'ue, their main purpose was to fight intruders.

In "ggdrasil, guilds in possession of a base e'uivalent to a castle orgreater were given several special benefits.

=ne of these benefits were @&s that guarded the base.

The undead monsters in the 6reat 0nderground Tomb of @a%arick fellunder this category. These so called Lspawn @&sL had a level cap of:A and respawned automatically at no cost after a fixed period of time, but since it wasnLt possible to change their appearances and $Iprogramming, they did not pose much of a threat against otherintruding players.

=n the other hand, another special benefit was the power to create anoriginal @&. 2hen a guild takes over a base with a castle/level rank, they could create @&s with a collective maximum level of CAA. Sincethe highest level was 9AA, you could create a maximum of five Gvl.9AA and four Gvl. BA @&s as an example.

  • 7/26/2019 Overlord Vol 01

    32/455

2hen creating an original @&, in addition to their appearance and $I,it was even possible to change their armours and weapons. Thisallowed a guild to create far stronger @&s and assign them to guardkey locations.

There was no need to create these @&s with combat in mind.$nother guild who occupied a castle, the 6reat at Ringdom, turnedall their @&s into cats or other feline creatures. It could be said aguild was given the exclusive right to create the image andatmosphere of their castle.

Situated on the border between the aharuth 4mpire and the

Ringdom of -e/4sti%e, to the south of the $%ellerisia mountains, was a

vast forest called LThe 6reat Forest of ToveL. =n the outskirts of this

forest, lay the village of arne.

It had a population of about 98A people, which were divided into 8B

families. For a border village of the kingdom of -e/4sti%e, this number

    wasn#t unusual.

The main livelihood of the villagers came from the forest and theircrops, since there were almost no visitors except for some doctors

looking for herbs and the tax collector who came once a year. It was a

    village fro%en in time.

The villagers were busy the moment they woke up at sunrise. $s a

village without a magical light, the V &erpetual GightW , they worked

from sunrise until sundown, it was that kind of life.

4nri 4mmott#s first task every day would be to go to the nearby well

and draw water. )rawing the water was a girl#s ob and once the water

tank inside her family home was full, her first task of the day would be

completed. $round this time, her mother would prepare breakfast, and

the family of four would enoy breakfast together.

reakfast consisted of boiled wheat barley or wheat porridge, as well

as some stir/fried vegetables. Sometimes they would also eat fruits.

$fter dining with her parents, her 9A year old sister would leave for the

forest to pick up fresh firewood, or help out with the fieldwork. In the

  • 7/26/2019 Overlord Vol 01

village centre!!once the bell rings for noon, everyone will rest in the

nearby s'uare to eat lunch together.

Gunch consisted of black bread a few days old, along with some

    minced meat soup.

$fter that they would continue working in the fields and once the sun

set everyone returned to their homes to eat dinner.

Gike lunch, dinner also consisted of black bread, along with bean

soup. If the village hunters managed to catch some animals, there

would be some meat as well. $fter dinner, everyone would use thelights from the kitchen and chat happily, while mending torn clothes.

They would go to sleep around ; o# clock.

4nri 4mmott was born 9? years ago, and up to this day she had never

left the village. She was wondering, would her days always stay the

    same3

    >ust like any other day, 4nri got out of bed and went to the well to

    draw water.

It usually took her about : trips to the well in order to fill up the huge

    water tank.

    *"osh

4nri rolled up her sleeves and showed off some eye catching white

skin that had not been exposed to much sun. 2orking in the fields had

made her arms slim, but brawny.

4ven though the filled water ug was heavy, 4nri easily picked it up.

If the ug was filled to the brim, she would have to make fewer trips,

  • 7/26/2019 Overlord Vol 01

    55/455

which would make her ob a lot faster, right3

ut it shouldn#t be too heavy for her to pick up. 2hile thinking this

way, 4nri started to make her way home. =n her way back she heard

a sound and after turning towards it her heart tensed up with a feeling

    of dread.

The sound she heard was the noise of wood being smashed.

    Followed byOOO

    *$ screamOOOO3

It sounded like the cry of a strangled bird, but it was definitely not abird who produced these cries. 4nri could not help but shudder. She

definitely was not the scream of a human.

suit of armor pointing a drawn sword at the villagers.

=n the ground was a villager with a fatal stab wound.

*6ood, 4nri has also come back, now let#s escape 'uickly+

-ight now, the situation of the 4mmott family is critical. They were

worried when 4nri did not return home, causing them to miss their

chance to escape. They were in imminent danger.

ut all too soon their fear became bitter reality.

The moment they wanted to run away!!the silhouette of a person

entered the doorway. Standing in the sunlight was a person armored

in a full suit of armor bearing the crest of the aharuth 4mpire. In his

hand he was holding the scabbard of a sword.

The aharuth 4mpire is constantly at war with its neighbour, theRingdom of -e/4sti%e. ut invasions would only happen near Fortress

city of 4ae -antel, they never reached this village before.

The 'uiet life of this village was abruptly stopped.

From the slits in the helmet, was the feeling of cold eyes counting the

numbers of 4nri#s family. 4nri felt terrified, looking into his eyes.

The knight gripped onto his sword, creaking sounds could be heard

from the way he gripped his sword.

hesitation, she decided to run 'uickly into the forest.

The sound of horses, shouts, clashing metal and the smell of burning.

From every corner of the village, these situations enteredd 4nri#s ears,

eyes and nose. 4xactly where were they coming from3 4nri

desperately struggled to find out while she ran. To run until the limits

of her body, or to hide in the corner of a house. Fear was threatening

to take over her body and the strong beatings of her heart was not

only caused by her running. $s it was, the feeling of a small hand

Soldiers, fifty in number, rode through the grasslands. 4ach and every

one of them was muscular, vigorous and eye/catching. The men could

only be described by the word M-obustM. 4ven while wearingbreastplate, once could see the well toned muscles underneath. $

man, around thirty years of age, with a sunbathed dark and wrinkled

face, short black hair, black eyes, and sharp like a sword looks to the

man beside him. Maptain, we are approaching the first village on our

    route.M M"es, indeed, Gieutenant.M 6eorgiev Stolonov, -e/4sti%e

Ringdom#s proud warrior, has yet to see any of the villages.

Suppressing his eagerness, 6eorgiev implores his horse to maintain

the steady gallop. $lthough the current speed should not normallywear down the horse, it has still been forced to march all the way here

since the apital. Insidiously, fatigue builds up and penetrates its body.

4ven a horse would be tired after the long trip and he could not afford

to burden the horse any further. MI hope nothing happened.M

0neasiness subtly lies beneath the GieutenantLs words. 6eorgiev

shares the same thought. The king, who issued the command,

implored 6eorgiev to investigate the sightings of Imperial Rnights near

the border. Should any be found, 6eorgiev is to promptly subduethem. Initially, since it was at the outskirts of the city Gantiere, sending

troops from there would be faster. However, considering that the

enemy were well armed and trained Imperial Rnights, doing so would

be unreasonable. In -e/4sti%e, the only ones who can rival the

Imperial Rnights were the soldiers under 6eorgiev. $s such, the task of

suppressing raids from the Imperial Soldiers fell upon the rightfully

frustrated 6eorgievLs shoulders. =ne can mobili%e soldiers to protect

the villages before 6eorgievLs arrival, and doing so would be enoughto resist the raids, gaining them valuable time. $nd while there were a

myriad of other possible methods of resistance, nothing was done...

no, itLs that nobody could do anything. 6eorgiev, knowing full well

exactly why it was as such, was restless. He tries to calm down yet his

burning sensation that torments his heart. Maptain, itLs mindless that

After hearing the other party agreeing, Momonga lifts "message" to

o! that you have sho!ed them the po!er of the staff, you should let

Hidden inside Ain oal &o!n's staff is a countless force of monsters

$omplying !ith the idea of Momonga, the dangling stone inside the

sna(es mouth began to sha(e and a strong force pours out of it.

Momonga holds up Ain oal &o!n's staff and a huge ball of

light starts glo!ing in front. 2he ball of light produces another superior

ball of light !ith a !hirlpool of flames surrounding it. 2he flame vorte*

    impact on him at all.

1oon after, the huge fire tornado strong enough to melt metal and a

blinding light engulfing it, is constantly been sha(en into a human

    shape.

#rimal )ire /lemental 4 can to be said to be among the highest tier of

Aura's voice issued a sigh, !hile !atching intensely. Absolutely

unable to summon the highest tier /lemental !ith their o!n spells, on

    Aura's face, an e*pression of 7oy li(e children receiving $hristmas

    "Huh, Huh3"

smile changed bac( to a more child li(e one.

    "eally3"

"t does not matter, even if you destroy it."

Momonga shrugged, !hile saying it does not matter. 6ith the 1taffs

6hile Momonga sight leaves this battle of strength, he starts thin(ing

Momonga has a lot of magic items. 6ith his personality, he basically

li(e to store them instead of using them. He felt it !as pity, so he didnot use the consumable items. /ven !hen facing bosses, he did not

!ant to use the most advanced recovery items. He can not be called a

cautious personality, he is simply stingy. 2he items start gradually to

    accumulate.

6hile he !as living in -ggdrasil, Momonga !as holding these items

inside a bo*. 6here did it go no!3

Momonga recalls the scene of opening the bo* of items inside his

t !as as if a !indo! opened and Momongas hand traversed it. n

place of the originally empty space emerged a hole !ith several

6hile moving his hand, the items inside this space changed. 1crolls,

Momonga can not help but feel at ease and smiles. 6ith this, even if

everyone inside aaric( becomes his enemy, Momonga had enough

    to guarantee his o!n safety.

%lan(ly staring at the fight of Aura and Mare, Momonga start

2he #$ he so far encountered !ere they programmed3

    became li(e humans.

And !hat in this !orld is going on3

He did not (no!. 1ince the magic from -ggdrasil can be used here,

then it !ould be more appropriate to assume that it is a game li(e

-ggdrasil. %ut according to his o!n 7udgement, it is doubtful. t is

nothing li(e inside a game. n the end, is it still in the game or in a

n !hat state of mind sho! he face the future3

He has to conform to !hat e*tend -ggdrasil influenced this !orld. f

the monsters inside aaric( and the #$s are all based on the

electromagnetic data from -ggdrasil, then there should be no enemy

    here.

2he problem is if they are some other data e*cept the electromagnetic

He should try to collect clues, although it is unclear ho! this !orld

!or(s, at the moment Momonga is simply an ignorant traveller. He

must proceed !ith caution and carefully collect information.

f this is a different !orld, should he strive to find !ays to return to his

original !orld3He feels doubtful. f you have friends in the old !orld, you should do

so. Maybe if your parents are still alive, it !ould be good to thin( of

!ays to go home. f there is a family in need of support, or a

    girlfriend ...

%ut there !ere no such people !aiting for him.

    Chapter 2 | Floor Guardians Part 4

The huge &rimal Fire 4lemental is slowly melting and disappearing

into thin air. The heat that has been released into the air is also

    gradually fading.

6ith the disappearance of the )ire /lemental, Momonga had a slight

feeling that his dominance over it !as also vanishing. Although #rimal

)ire /lementals have e*traordinary destructive strength and durability,

their amaing fire damage can be totally ineffective. )or someone !ith

!ere a perfect match. At the same time, Momonga also felt the

nside -ggdrasil there is hunger and thirst, but these needs are totally
