POLE HAZARD SIGNS

HIGHVOLTAGE

Electromark

CUSTOM SIGNSCustomize your sign with a company logo or number to tell customers and passersby who they should contact if a utility pole or its components are damaged or shows evidence of tampering. Customers are often the first people to alert electric utilities of issues within their area. Equip them with the tools they need to alert the right people. We suggest using OSHA specified, ANSI Z535 layouts to improve sign effectiveness. If your signs need to be changed to ANSI Z535-accepted formats, send in your current artwork, we will handle the rest.

HAZARD SIGNSMark distribution poles that are easily accessible to the public with warning signs to prevent unwanted tampering or accidents. We offer stock signs, but custom signs can be more effective.

SAFETY ENHANCEMENTS

VISI/STRIP VISIBILITY STRIPSUse VISI/STRIP on your utility poles to increase visibility. Visibility strips should be used at driver level to show the height of the object. Multiple standard and custom options are available.

POLE CLIMBING CONDITION TAGSInform linemen and maintenance workers of pole conditions. Pole climbing condition tags use industry standard icons that communicate whether the pole is safe to climb or if it needs to be replaced. Products are available in non-reflective aluminum, reflectivealuminum and polyethylene materials.

POLE STATUS TAGSPole status tags ensure that the pole’s age, pesticide treatment records and inspection status is clear to the linemen maintaining the pole. Tags can be layered to display more information. Attach either a custom or stock pole status tag using a date nail or wires.

“HIGH VOLTAGE” CROSS-ARM MARKERSMark cross-arms that contain wires that are 600 volts or more with “high voltage” cross-arm markers. Our markers are made out of polyethylene with a perforation between words to enable a split across cross-arm mounting. Markers are 3.5” x 14”, with 3” character legends for easy readability. For a longer lasting material, request our markers in PermaGrave®. Cross-arms can be attached with nails, banding, screws and rivets.

PERFORATED TAGOUT TAGSWe took the qualities and benefits of our standard self-laminating tags to design perforated tags. Save time and improve records by detaching operational details that need to be saved in the office for record keeping. Standard tag size is 7” x 4” with a 2” x 4”detachable stub. Polyester is the Electromark preferred material for perforated tags.

CUSTOM TAGSCombine our lineup of tag features or add your custom information to a specific layout. Tell us what you need and our artists can design the proof to conform to ANSI design for your review and approval.

Tag Construction and Design Requirements

WHY VINYL? WHY POLYESTER?Very tough material, naturally thicker than polyester. Lesssensitive to edge tearing.

Easier material to write on, and it can be used in print on-demand devices. Tough material.

STANDARD DESIGNOSHA 1910.269(d)(3)(ii)(A)(2) requires tagout devices to be standardized within the facility in at least one of the following criteria: color, shape or size; and additionally in the case of tagout devices, print and format should also be standardized.

Durable MaterialsOSHA 1910.269(d)(3)(ii)(D) require tag attachment means to meet 50lb pull force. Tags must be made out of materials that will hold up to the environment where they are being used. NESC Part 4 Section: 41 Rule: 411D points to ANSI Z535 for tag design and layout requirements.

TAGOUT TAGS

DANGER

SELF-LAMINATING TAGOUT TAGSExtremely durable and lightweight polyester tags resist varying temperatures, UV, moisture and wind. Pencil markings on the polyester surface appear highly legible. Inscribe your specific information, laminate with a clear polyester adhesive flap and attach your tag. Once the tag has served its purpose, destroy it via the edge tear-notch, eliminating any future confusion.

ANSI 1968 (OSHA Header) TAGSSimilar to signs, tags require a consistent text style and format. We offer stock and custom tags in the OSHA 1968 format.

PRINT ON-DEMAND TAGSCustomize and print tags on-demand by pairingElectromark print-on-demand tags with either Redtag or TagLink software. Buy tags in sheets to print from a laser, thermal or ink jet printer, or buy them in rolls to combine with a desktop thermal printer.

Signature Block

Tagout tags should contain a place for the name and contact information of the person authorizing the placement or attaching the tag to the power source. Also consider including a note section, service start and completion date.

TAGOUT TAG CHECKLIST

Correct Header

Use the “Danger” header for a tagout tag. Danger headers should be used in cases where there is an imminent hazard which if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. ANSI requires the signal word for hazard tags to be located at the top of the tag. The letters used in the signal word should be at least 3/8” high.

White Message Panel

The message panel should be safety white and the lettering safety black for the highest contrast and visibility. The letters should be upper and lowercase letters. All uppercase letters should only be used for short statements to emphasize certain words.

Clear Symbol

Symbols can convey hazards faster than words and have the ability to transcend language barriers in multilingual environments. Use a symbol that illustrates the consequence of the hazard.

1

2

Concise Message

All tags need to contain a message panel that identifies the specific hazard or relevant instruction. The message panel should be concise and easy to understand, examples include: Do Not Operate, Do Not Close, Do Not Open, Do Not Energize. A single tag should only address one issue to avoid confusion.

Tag Border

The border should be the same color as the signal word panel used on the tag (red for danger, orange for warning, yellow for caution, blue for notice and green for safety instruction). If more contrast is required for the tag, according to ANSI Z535 5.4.4, safety white can also be used as a background color if necessary to achieve better contrast.

Double Sided

At the very least, the back of the tag should refer to the front of the tag. The best tags, however, provide instructions that coincide with the tagout program.

Tag Size

Small tags = small print. Smaller tags are harder to read and fill out. Handwriting requires at least ¼” between rows. When you can, use larger tags. If a smaller tag is required, avoid readability issues by printing your own tags opposed to using handwritten fields.

Tag Removal

Tags are temporary. Use tags with small V-slots to enable quick destruction after use. Some customers use a perforated section of the tag that can be sent back to the office to record a completed job.

TAG FASTENERSStrings and wires do not comply with OSHA 1910.147 and 1910.269. For tagout use self-locking nylon zip ties that are UV resistant, non-releasable and exceed OSHA’s 50lb pull strength minimum. Maintenance record tags do not have attachment requirements.

HOT CLIPSPrevent tags from blowing off in the wind with hot clips. The spring design makes it easy to snap-on or remove a tag from an overhead line. Clips are 3/16” diameter aluminum, attach a tagout tag with a shotgun or hot stick.

PLASTIC SNAP GROMMETSSnap grommets come in two sizes, large and small. The large grommets can accommodate a lock shank and the smaller ones fit most ties. Plastic grommets are non-conductive and are often used in conjunc-tion with printable tags to add strength to the hole. Snap grommets can be assembled by hand and come in black. Brass eyelets cannot be assembled on the spot but are available on some stock parts and can be added to any custom tag upon request.

REUSABLE BUNGEE DANGER SIGNSUse this temporary and reusable 10” x 12” heavy-duty vinyl banner as an alert to other linemen when a pole or tower is being worked on. The banner comes with a bungee cord and features four grommets for easy installation. This sign can be customized and is avail-able in a variety of colors.

WRAP AROUND POLE BANNERSAlert other linemen that the pole is currently being worked on with our fluorescent wrap-around banner. The banner is 6” x 45”, attachable by velcro and contains pockets that will hold the tagout tag. Customize the banner to accommodate your work protection process and needs.

BRASS TAG FASTENERSSecurely attach your tag to a variety of applications using our brass, non-corrosive tag fasteners. Brass tags are expected to last a lifetime. Choose from any of the three different types of constructions, “S” hook tag, beaded chain or the jack chain tag fasteners.
