Overhead Cranes,Jibs & End TrucksProgressive Crane®, a Mazzella Company, continues a tradition of family, teamwork and customer loyalty.

We partner with our customers and suppliers to deliver on time and on budget. The ability to address standard and special applications, including difficult installations, has established Progressive Crane as a respected leader in the industry.

Progressive Crane opened its doors more than 40 years ago as Progressive Electrical Systems, Inc. It was started as a service organization focusing on crane repair and services. Equipment manufacturers, at the time, neglected this facet of the business, as it was cost prohibitive for manufacturers to bring service personnel to the installed customer base.

Progressive CraneHistoryProgressive Crane opened in 1968 as Progressive Electrical Systems, Inc. when president and founder, Wayne Goforth, decided to start a service organization focusing on crane repair and services.

Progressive Electrical Systems, Inc. began its coverage in Cleveland and continued to blanket the state of Ohio, working on virtually every make, model and type of crane. Tens of thousands of cranes are currently serviced within the Progressive network of offices and through the Local Service Tech organization.

Progressive started engineering and manufacturing cranes in 1972. Between 1972 and 1976, Progressive continued to grow and expand by adding additional products and services, and also concentrated on the manufacturing processes and offering customers quality field services.

In 1976, Progressive Crane opened a manufacturing facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, to ease freight costs and improve local service to the southern states.

In 1989, Progressive Crane purchased Cleveland Beacon® Manufacturing, a crane manufacturer founded in 1946. This purchase allowed for a more diverse offering of product lines and components. Many crane assemblers and end users are consumers of Beacon Line products.

In 2005, Progressive Crane was acquired by the Mazzella Companies, which has continued internal product and market development, making it a significant provider of a wide range of overhead cranes and end trucks. The company has on-staff engineering and computer-aided design, along with SolidWorks capability, to build customized indoor cranes and runway systems to a lifting capacity exceeding 150 tons.

Today, there are thousands of Progressive Crane installations throughout the United States and abroad. We welcome the opportunity to address your overhead material handling needs and thank you for your lifting confidence.

Crane ClassificationsAs to the types of cranes covered under CMAA Specification No. 70 (Top Running Bridge and Gantry Type MultipleGirder Electric Overhead Traveling Cranes), there are six (6) different classifications of cranes, each dependent onduty cycle. Within the CMAA Specification is a numerical method for determining exact crane class based on theexpected load spectrum. Aside from this method, the different crane classifications, as generally described by CMAA, are as follows:

Class A (Standby or Infrequent Service):This service class covers cranes where precise handling of equipment at slow speeds with long idle periods betweenlifts are required. Capacity loads may be handled for initial installation of equipment and for infrequent maintenance.Typical examples are cranes used in powerhouses, public utilities, turbine rooms, motor rooms and transformer stations. This is the lightest crane as far as duty cycle is concerned.

Class B (Light Service):This service class covers cranes where service requirements are light and the speed is slow. Loads may vary from noload to occasional full-rated loads with 2 to 5 lifts per hour, averaging 10 feet per lift. Typical examples are cranes inrepair shops, light assembly operations, service buildings, light warehousing, etc.

Class C (Moderate Service):This service covers cranes where service requirements are deemed moderate, handling loads which average 50 percent of the rated capacity with 5 to 10 lifts per hour, averaging 15 feet, with not over 50 percent of the lifts at rated capacity. Typical examples are cranes used in machine shops, paper mill machine rooms, etc.

Class D (Heavy Service):In this type of service, loads approaching 50 percent of the rated capacity will be handled constantly during the workperiod. High speeds are desirable for this type of service with 10 to 20 lifts per hour averaging 15 feet, with not over65 percent of the lifts at rated capacity. Typical examples are cranes used in heavy machine shops, foundries, fabricatingplants, steel warehouses, container yards, lumber mills, etc., and standard duty bucket and magnet operations where heavy duty production is required.

Class E (Severe Service):This type of service requires a crane capable of handling loads approaching the rated capacity throughout its life with20 or more lifts per hour at or near the rated capacity. Typical examples are magnet, bucket, magnet / bucket combinationcranes for scrap yards, cement mills, lumber mills, fertilizer plants, container handling, etc.

Class F (Continuous Severe Service):In this type of service, the crane must be capable of handling loads approaching rated capacity continuously under severe service conditions throughout its life. Typical examples are custom designed specialty cranes essential to performing the critical work tasks affecting the total production facility, providing the highest reliability with special attention to ease of maintenance features.

Engineered Cranes& RunwaysProgressive Crane is a leading manufacturer of world-class overheadcranes with more than 40 years experience. We engineer and buildcustom solutions ranging from light-duty economical cranes to very large-capacity high-duty cycle cranes with welded plate-box girders.

Our work is done in full compliance with CMAA, NEC, OSHA and ASME standards. We have extensive electrical capability, as well as AWS certified welders.

In-House EngineeringProgressive Crane provides in-house engineering and can also furnish PE (Professional Engineer) stamped drawings and calculations. All drawings are done in SolidWorks—this reduces calculation time and increases productivity, which saves our customers money.

Also, being electronic, the calculations and drawings may be e-mailed to further save time. This is an ideal solution for companies with fabrication capabilities, but with no in-house engineering.

Crane RunwaysWe believe it’s logical that the engineers who design your crane also design your runway structure. Our engineers utilize SolidWorks to create your runway designs, in strict accordance with CMAA, ANSI, Uniform Building Code, AISC and American Welding Institute standards and practices.

Fabricated RunwaysThe same rugged quality that goes into our cranes is applied to our runway structures. In many cases, the same craftsmen and welders who fabricate your crane also produce your runway structure.

Install RunwaysA correctly installed runway structure ensures a smooth-running crane system. Our installers are runway experts with experience established over many years and hundreds of installations. They have developed unique skills and special tools to make installations quick and easy.

Crane Upgrades / ModernizationProgressive Crane can service any make or model crane. We pride ourselves on fast, quality service 24 hours a day. We comply with all OSHA and CMAA standards.

One of our specialities is the modernization and upgrading of overhead cranes. Overhead crane investments can be extended and made more productive with new, more efficient hoists and drives, updates to electrification systems ordrive control packages, including state-of-the-art variable frequency control.

Upgraded electrical systems and new components willfunction better and, in turn, minimize future downtime.Whether it’s new speed and motion controls or cab to pendent conversions, we can modernize your system for a fraction of the cost of a new system.

Benefits of Crane Modernization & Upgrades

Older cranes can be improved to a higher level of productivity and safety by one of our modernization upgrade and refurbishment programs. Our projects can include the following:

■ Increase capacity■ New speed and motion controls■ Cab to pendant conversions■ Radio and infrared remote controls■ Electrification systems■ Major mechanical components

Radio Control Installations & UpgradesImprove your existing crane control system with a radio control. These efficient and easy-to-use controls increase productivity, reduce costs and enhance worker safety by allowing operators to stand away from the load being transported.

Radio controls can easily be integrated into existing cranes. This is an ideal upgrade to perform in conjunction with your annual crane inspection.

Installing a VFD can save your business money on operating costs by varying the load and motor speed. A motor that operates at a lower speed will consume less energy.

VFD’s can also increase the lifespan of your equipment

by preventing jarring stops and starts. VFD upgrades are one of our most popular upgrades, so call us today to schedule yours.

Additional Services■ Operational and Maintenance Training■ Long-Term Preventative Maintenance Programs ■ Equipment Evaluations■ OSHA Compliance Inspections■ Emergency Breakdown Repairs (24/7)■ Modifications■ Installations■ Upgrades and Rebuilds to all brands of cranes and hoists■ Engineering Support

TrainingWe offer crane operator training, and employ two "Top Trainer" award winners. Our class consists of classroom training and a certificate upon completion. Call us for more information and to schedule your training today.

Crane Bumpers (Continued)

Crane and Industrial Buffers: Large versions of the Fluidicshok with coil spring reset. Capacities of up to 14,000,000 inch-pounds are available in a heavy-duty mill-type design. Over 60 sizes are standard. Long stroke buffers are available with up to 120 inch deflections and capacities to one hundred million inch-pounds, making this the highest capacity standard shock absorber in the world.

Modern, heavy-duty production cranes have increased in size and speed over recent years. The hydraulic bumper was developed to transform the crane’s impact or kinetic energy into heat. The device brings the crane to rest in a controlled manner, minimizing end forces. This has rendered simple mechanical devices, such as springs or rubber bumpers, obsolete on all but the lightest crane applications.

Several codes and standards have evolved that specifically identify the criteria for safely decelerating a moving crane or transfer vehicle. Among these are AIST, CMAA, OSHA, DIN, CEM, etc. There has been a rapid development of hydraulic bumpers with capacities and stroke lengths to meet the demands of increasing crane weights and speeds.

The hydraulic bumper is the most economic and reliable method for limiting the forces transmitted during an impact. Structural engineers can now confidently evaluate the forces from longitudinal impact and utilize the hydraulic bumper to reduce overall structural steel costs in a building.

Self-Compensating

ACE Controls self-compensating shock absorbers are highly engineered, fixed, multi-orifice units that decelerate moving weights smoothly, regardless of changing conditions, and require no adjustment. These versatile performers offer wide effective weight ranges for handling a wider range of applications and increased velocities.

As a moving load impacts the shock absorber, the piston travels through the stroke and forces hydraulic fluid through the multi-orifice inner tube. The total orifice area decreases at a rate consistent with the decay of impact velocity, resulting in true linear deceleration.

Adjustable

The standard adjustable ACE shock absorber is based on the multiple-orifice design principle and includes a series of orifices machined along the length of a fixed inner tube. The MAGNUM® Group adjustable shock absorber, shown to the right, has a stationary metering tube, with an inner tube that rotates upon adjustment. These unique models offer dual adjustability by turning the stop collar or the hex socket adjuster at the rear.

The adjustable shock absorber offers flexibility in application design and selection procedure. When an effective weight change is required, one simply adjusts the setting. The total orifice area changes, providing true linear deceleration.

Crane Upgrades / ModernizationsOne of our specialities is modernization and upgrades of overhead cranes. Overhead crane investments can be extended and made more productive with new, more efficient hoists and drives, updates to electrification systems or drive control packages, including state-of-the-art variable frequency control.

Upgraded electrical systems and new components will function better, and in turn, minimize future downtime. Whether it’s new speed and motion controls or cab to pendent conversions, we can modernize your system for a fraction of the cost of a new system.

Benefits of CraneModernization & UpgradesOlder cranes can be improved to a higher level of productivity and safety by one of our modernization upgrade and refurbishment programs. Our projects can include the following:

■ Increase capacity■ Cab to pendant conversions■ Electrification systems■ New speed and motion controls■ Radio and infrared remote controls■ Major mechanical components

Radio ControlInstallations & UpgradesImprove your existing crane control system with a radio control. These efficient and easy-to-use controls increase productivity, reduce costs and enhance worker safety by allowing operators to stand away from the load being transported.

Radio controls can easily be integrated into existing cranes. This is an ideal upgrade to perform in conjunction with your annual crane inspection.

Installing a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) can save your business money on operating costs by varying the load and motor speed. A motor that operates at a lower speed will consume less energy.

VFDs can also increase the lifespan of your equipment by preventing jarring stops and starts. VFD upgrades are one of our most popular upgrades. Call us today to schedule yours.

Overhead Crane InstallationAt Mazzella Crane Service / KCI Crane Service, we provide our customer with the best turn-key crane system. We offer complete installation, load testing and startup services on every crane we sell.

Our experienced personnel will perform a complete field check, provide drawings and build each system to your specific needs.

We then fabricate your runway and/or crane system per your specification and install it for you. There is no need to look any further than Mazzella Crane Service / KCI Crane Service for all your lifting needs.
