Summer Parades Salem will be participating in the Saturday August 4, Hanover and the August 11, St. Michael 2018 Summer Parades. Please mark your calendars to help us distribute candy and materials to the people on the parade route. More information will be provided closer to the dates. Everyone is welcome!

Pastor Paul Kuehn grew up in Neenah, WI, and attended Fox Valley Lutheran High School in Appleton, WI, graduating in the year 2000. From there he continued on to Martin Luther College and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, graduating with a Masters of Divinity. During the course of his studies, he developed a deep love and appreciation for music, which he continues to have and share with his wife, Danielle. Pastor Kuehn’s other interests include long-distance running and kayaking. Mrs. Danielle (Humann) Kuehn grew up in Livingston, MT, and attended Luther Prep in Watertown, WI, graduating in the year 1999. She also attended Martin Luther College for a 5-year program in second-ary education with a major in music education and a minor in history. She graduated from Martin Luther College in 2004, along with her husband.

The Kuehns met in high school through the Lutheran Vanguard of Wisconsin, a summer marching band program that draws musicians from a number of area WELS Lutheran High Schools. Pastor still enjoys playing his saxo-phone and Danielle her flute. Danielle also has had musical experience on the violin, the piano, and the organ. The Kuehns were married on July 17, 2004, the summer after both graduated from Martin Luther College. In 2008, after graduating from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, the Kuehns had the privilege of taking a trip to Germany before moving down to Texas to begin serving God’s kingdom in ministry. Pastor Kuehn served at Risen Savior Lutheran Church in Austin, TX from 2008 until the end of 2013. During their time in TX, the Kuehns welcomed their first two children, Katarina (9) and Max (6). At the beginning of 2014, the Kuehns

moved to Shawano, WI and Pastor Kuehn began serving at Divine Savior Lutheran Church. The Kuehns welcomed two more children, Avalyn (4) and Axel (9 months). As a family they enjoy taking trips together, watching movies, and playing board games. Now as we prepare to move to MN, we look forward to meeting you in person. Katarina is looking forward to starting fourth grade in the fall. Max is looking forward to starting first grade. Avalyn is looking forward to starting 4K preschool. Looking forward to serving with you in Christ’s kingdom, Pastor Paul, Danielle, Katarina, Max,

next school year. Mr. Eric Hahn was assigned to Serve Salem. Currently he is a teacher and dorm supervisor at California Lutheran High School. We look forward to partnering with him for the education of the students

at Salem.

Mr. Ryan Randall has accepted the divine call to be the Principal and to

teach the 7th and 8th grades at our Salem Lutheran School! Please keep him and his family in your prayers as he transitions into this new role.

Letter to Salem Families

Dear Salem Families,

Before I transition to the next chapter in my ministry, I want to take a moment to thank you. From the moment I accepted the call to Salem, you welcomed my family with open arms. My first physical contact with Salem members was the moving company of Kenny Meyer, Lee Brandel, and Nate Hochmuth who helped pack up all of our belongings into a few borrowed trailers and whisk them away to Minnesota. We immediately had a place to stay in Minnesota as another member, DeLyte Bursch, graciously allowed us to rent out her home while we searched for a permanent residence. On move-in day we were greeted by dozens of members all eager to support us in any and every way imaginable. It is that image of Salem on move-in day that will stay with me forever. More than the magnificent 150+ year old church, more than the 30+ foot tall Christmas trees, the spirit of genuine love and support displayed by so many at Salem will always be held close to my heart.

It has been a true joy and blessing to be a part of the ministry at Salem. During these past 7 years I have witnessed you striving to serve God with your best in so many ways. God has blessed Salem with many talented individuals - tapping into those gifts will cause this ministry to continue to thrive! I can’t wait to hear what God has in store for you in the coming years.

The hardest part of leaving Salem by far is the people. We we have grown to be a family and I love my family deeply. So saying goodbye without knowing when or if I’ll ever see you again (this side of heaven), is tough. But as Dr. Seuss once said, “ Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

Salem will always be a special place to us, and we have you to thank for that.

God be with you - until we meet again,

Mr. Beilke and Family

Salem Students trip to Washington D.C. On behalf of the students and chaperones who participated in the 2018 trip to Washington D.C., a thousand thank-yous for your contributions and encouragement in making this trip possible. To be able to go on such a trip, where we were able to visit such historic places as Jamestown, Williamsburg and Gettysburg, Monticello and Mount Vernon; where we were able to learn how our government works at the Capital and the Pentagon; where we were able to expand our minds at the Smithsonian museums; and where we were able to honor those who are serving and who have served at Arlington cemetery, the Air Force memorial, the war memorials and the national monuments is an amazing blessing. We had 6 students attend: three 8th graders and three 7th graders. We had ten adult chaperones attend. We learned, we bonded, we had fun, and we exhausted ourselves! We’ll give some insight into our trip, by sharing photos and one or two highlights from each day. Picking one or two is no easy feat!

We started out our trip early on Monday morning (very early). We flew to Dulles and met our tour leader, Tim, and the other school who shared our trip with us (Grace Lutheran in CA). From there, we loaded a bus and drove to Historic Jamestown. There, the students learned about early colonial times. They’re drying a deer hide and hollowing out a canoe, here. The chaperones got in on the fun, too. Day Two, we visited Williamsburg. The highlight of that day was walking where the likes of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington walked and planned. The tour guide at Williamsburg was fantastic. She did a great job getting the students to really think about what it was like to be a revolutionary. They even learned that kids had chores back then! And pretty significant consequences for bad behavior. There was some time for fun, as well. From there we travelled to Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. He had such a thirst for knowledge. He continued to make investments in learning and pur-

chasing books, long after he ran out of funds. He was broke when he died . Wednesday, Day Three, took us to the Capital. The cherry blossoms were in bloom, and they were gorgeous! While we were at the Capital, we learned a lot about the artistry there. All of the artwork held historical significance and helped to explain the foundations and principles of our nation. Each state has two statues located in the capital building. The location of the statues is considered the property of each state. So, while we were at the capital, we visited about 20 states, in just one room. We also learned that there were three people involved in painting the ceiling of the rotunda, at three different times. The first quit after falling off the scaffolding, getting entan-gled in the safety ropes and hanging upside down for several hours. The second was fired for including self-portraits in the painting. The third, the son of the first, managed to finish it without further incident. Day Three was a very long day, but probably the best. We visited Mount Vernon, two Smithsonian Museums and the National Archives. We walked about 8 miles, finishing the day with a lighted tour of the memorials and monuments. Day Four brought us to the Air Force memorial and the Pentagon. The tour guides at the Pentagon walk the entire thing backwards, so they can keep an eye on the people they’re leading. This includes walking backwards up escalators. We also spent some time at the Pentagon 9/11 memorial. It’s a powerful place. Those of us who witnessed that day were moved to tears. We spent time at Arlington National Cemetery, where we watched the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School will take place Monday-Friday, August 6-10, 2018 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. for

ages 3 (potty trained) to 5th grade. The VBS children will sing in the 9 a.m. Sunday, August 12 Worship

Service. A detailed sign-up sheet for VBS volunteers and registration information will be available soon.

We finished the day after visiting Ford’s Theater and viewing the White House from the park across the street. On our final day, we visited Gettysburg. Because our tour guide was so knowledgeable and passionate about the Civil War, our three-hour morning tour flew by. We learned so much about how the Civil War was fought, and how the battle of Gettysburg was won. It was a powerful place. After Gettysburg, and one more Smithsonian museum (where we saw Felix Baumgartner’s balloon capsule), we loaded the plane and headed home. The 2018 Washington DC trip was quite a learning adventure. What a great opportunity these students had to learn about our nation’s history. Students: Sophia Alderman, Mason Auseth, Evelyn Dale, Dylan Lehne, Megan Sherwood, Elise Vik.

Chaperones: Mr. Ryan Randall, Rachel Alderman, Jen Auseth, Lowell Poor, Angel Dale, Rob & Nikki Lehne, Jaime & Barb Sherwood, & Corie Vik.

Thank you to everyone, for all the support to enable this trip to happen.
