Interrogating the concepts of allegiance and identity in a globalised world involves renewing our understanding of membership and participation within and beyond the nation-state. Allegiance can be used to define a singular national identity and common connection to a nation-state. In a global context, however, we need more dynamic conceptions to understand the importance of maintaining diversity and building allegiance with others outside borders. Understanding how allegiance and identity are being reconfigured today provides valuable insights into important contemporary debates around citizenship.

Catullus is one of the most popular poets to survive from classical antiquity. Above all others he seems to speak to modern readers with a modern voice. The distinguished contributors to this Companion discuss the principal subjects which drew Catullus’ affection and disgust, above all his famous affair with the woman he calls ‘Lesbia’, and situate him in the social, historical and intellectual context of first-century BC Rome. One of the so-called ‘new poets’, Catullus had a profound effect on subsequent Latin poetry, and this is explored especially for the Augustan age and the late first century AD. A significant part of the volume is concerned with Catullus’ survival into the modern world. There are discussions both of the manuscript tradition and of the interpretative scholarship which has been devoted to his poetry, as well as his reception by renaissance and later poets. Students in particular will appreciate this book.

In this book, Efrosyni Boutsikas shows that ancient Greek religious
performances were intricately orchestrated displays comprising
topography, architecture, space, cult, and myth. These various elements
were unified in ways that integrated the body within cosmic space and
made the sacred extraordinary. Boutsikas also explores how natural light
or the night sky may have assisted in intensifying the experience of these
rituals, and how they may have determined ancient perceptions of the
cosmos. The author’s digital and virtual reconstructions of ancient
skyscapes and religious structures during such occurrences unveil a
deeper understanding of the importance of time and place in religious
experience. She illustrates how they shaped the emotions, cosmological
beliefs, and ritual memory of the participants. Her study revolutionises
our understanding of ancient emotionality and cognitive experience,
demonstrating how Greek religious spaces were vibrant arenas of shared
experiences of the cosmos.

The Dioscuri first appeared at the Battle of Lake Regillus in 496 BC to save the new Republic. Receiving a temple in the Forum in gratitude, the gods continued to play an important role in Roman life for centuries and took on new responsibilities as the needs of the society evolved. Protectors of elite horsemen, boxers and sailors, they also served as guarantors of the Republic’s continuation and, eventually, as models for potential future emperors. Over the course of centuries, the cult and its temples underwent many changes. In this book, Amber Gartrell explores the evolution of the cult. Drawing on a range of methodological approaches and a wide range of ancient evidence, she focuses on four key aspects: the gods’ two temples in Rome, their epiphanies, their protection of varied groups, and their role as divine parallels for imperial heirs, revealing how religion, politics and society interacted and influenced each other.
Amber Gartrell is an Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Roman History at University College London. Previously, she was a Stipendiary Lecturer in Ancient History at St Hilda’s, St John’s and Merton Colleges at the University of Oxford. Her research focuses upon the interactions between religion and other facets of Roman life, including politics, historical events, and social developments.

By their social and material context as mark-ers of graves, dedications and public signs of honour, inscriptions offer a distinct perspec-tive on the social lives, occupations, family belonging, mobility, ethnicity, religious affilia-tions, public honour and legal status of Roman women ranging from slaves and freedwomen to women of the elite and the imperial family, both in Rome and in Italian and provincial towns. They thus shed light on women who are largely overlooked by the literary sources. The wide range of inscriptions and graffiti included in this book show women participat-ing not only in their families and households but also in the social and professional life of their cities. Moreover, they offer us a glimpse of women’s own voices. Marital ideals and problems, love and hate, friendship, birth and bereavement, joy and hardship all figure in inscriptions, revealing some of the richness and variety of life in the ancient world.

Emily A. Hemelrijk is Professor of Ancient History at the University of Amsterdam. Her research focuses on Roman women and gender. Her books include Matrona Docta: Educated Women in the Roman Élite from Cornelia to Julia Domna (1999/2004), Hidden Lives, Public Personae: Women and Civic Life in the Roman West (2015) and Women and the Roman City in the Latin West (2013, edited with Greg Woolf).

Images of episodes from Greek mythology are widespread
in Roman art, appearing in sculptural groups, mosaics,
paintings and reliefs. They attest to Rome’s enduring
fascination with Greek culture, and her desire to absorb
and reframe that culture for new ends. This book
provides a comprehensive account of the meanings of
Greek myth across the spectrum of Roman art, including
public, domestic and funerary contexts. It argues that
myths, in addition to functioning as signifiers of a
patron’s education or paideia, played an important role
as rhetorical and didactic exempla. The changing use of
mythological imagery in domestic and funerary art in
particular reveals an important shift in Roman values
and senses of identity across the period of the first two
centuries AD, and in the ways that Greek culture was
turned to serve Roman values.

This volume centres on one of the most important questions in the study of antiquity – the interaction between Greece and the Ancient Near East, from the Mycenaean to the Hellenistic periods. Focusing on the stories that the peoples of the eastern Mediterranean told about the gods and their relationships with humankind, the individual treatments draw together specialists from both fields, creating for the first time a truly interdisciplinary synthesis. Old cases are re-examined, new examples discussed, and the whole range of scholarly opinions, past and present, are analysed, critiqued and contextualised. While direct textual comparisons still have something to show us, the methodologies advanced here turn their attention to deeper structures and wider dynamics of interaction and influence that respect the cultural autonomy and integrity of all the ancient participants. Adrian Kelly is Tutorial Fellow in Ancient Greek Language and Literature at Balliol College, Oxford, and Associate Professor and Clarendon University Lecturer in Classics at the University of Oxford. He has recently co-edited (with P. J. Finglass) Stesichorus in Context (Cambridge, 2015) and The Cambridge Companion to Sappho (Cambridge, 2021), and is completing a Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics commentary on Homer, Iliad XXIII. Christopher Metcalf is Official Fellow of The Queen’s College, Oxford, and Associate Professor in Classical Languages and Literature at the University of Oxford. He is the author of The Gods Rich in Praise: Early Greek and Mesopotamian Religious Poetry (2015) and Sumerian Literary Texts in the Schøyen Collection. Volume I: Literary Sources on Old Babylonian Religion (2019), and is pursuing research on early Greek poetry, and on ancient Mesopotamian (especially Sumerian) literature and religion.
