We currently support a range of people across the autistic spectrum including individuals with learning disabilities, mental health difficulties or challenging behaviours.

Tom’s story

Tom (29) has Asperger syndrome and mild learning disabilities. He spent his childhood moving around foster homes and the lack of stability caused Tom great anxiety. As an adult, Tom was supported by several generic providers who did not take into account his autism specific needs and his placements routinely broke down.

Tom came to Autism West Midlands through our transition service. We created an individual support system for him, providing the stability he had always longed for. We discovered that sensory issues were at the root of his problems, particularly when coping with noise above and below him in shared environments. Addressing this, we identified a suitable shared property and put a care plan in place.

Tom is now much happier and has discovered a talent for art. He is developing his skills while working towards a diploma in Art at college and has aspirations to exhibit and sell his work in the future.
