Air Forte Awards Link $6 Million in Contracts GPI's Link Division was recently awarded two new Air Force con- tracts, totaling more than $6,000,- 000, according to Link President William W. Wood Jr. One contract, received from the Air Materiel Command, calls for the delivery of flight simulators for pilot training for the most modern versions of the C-130 cargo trans- port. The second contract provides for development and manufacture of a new visual simulation system to be attached to Air Force simulators for various types of aircraft. The new system will permit pilots to experience a wide variety of aero- logical conditions during a simu- lated flight. 'Line of Balance 7 Seminar Conducted for Librascopers "Line of Balance," a management control technique adopt- ed by GPI for all of its divisions, underwent week-long scrutiny recently, when presented to a Librascope production and en- gineering management team. The five-day seminar was conduc- ted by Rear Admiral (Ret.) George T. Mundorff and Dr. William Bloom, Manager and Assistant Manager, respectively, of Corpor- ate Systems and Procedures for GPI. Travel Insurance A new travel accident policy, insuring employees against acci- dental death and dismember- ment while traveling on com- pany business, is now in effect, according to A. R. Pederson, Employee Benefits and Services Supervisor. Expense of the travel acci- dent policy is borne by Libra- scope, with all employees receiv- ing automatic blanket coverage. In addition to the new policy, public conveyance insurance con- tinues to be available to Libra- scope employees, Pederson pointed out. The policy provides death and dismemberment bene- fits covering trips anywhere in the world while riding as a fare- paying passenger on any con- veyance licensed to carry pas- sengers for hire. Seat Belts and Your SafetyVery recently a party of three employees on company busi-

ness, were victims of a car crash in which their vehicle wasstruck broadside by another car which dashed out of a sidestreet. One escaped with a shaking up; a second was tossedabout inside the car, suffering severe bruises and suspectedcracked ribs, is now wearing a tape corset.

The third was not so lucky. He was tossed out of the car tothe pavement and knocked unconscious. Hours later, at thehospital, doctors were relieved to find that he had sufferedonly a fractured collar bone, a broken upper arm, concussionand a possible fractured skull. He was hospitalized for a week,is now able to get around with the arm and shoulder in a castand brace.

To a man, all agree that had they been using seat belts theirinjuries would have at least been held to a minimum and pos-sibly they might not have been hurt at all. Certainly, the vic-tim who was hurled from the car would have been held to hisseat.

The same belief is held by three other Librascopers whohave been injured in car accidents in the past year. One, whosuffered almost fatal internal injuries and spent months in thehospital, is certain he would have escaped with minor injurieshad he been using a seat belt.

The purpose of this editorial is to point out that the streetsand highways are not becoming any safer, as more and morecars crowd into the available space. Also, that driving at aconservative speed is no guarantee of accident prevention.Accident records show that the majority of injury-producingcrashes occur at speeds of less than 25 miles an hour.

A number of tested and approved safety belts are on themarket. Standards vary considerably and the wary buyer willbe careful of what he invests in. In a separate story in thisissue of LIBRAZETTE, our safety coordinator reports onwhat to look for and what prevailing prices are. He also cau-tions regarding proper installation.

As a footnote, this item of news: Librascope is installingsafety seat belts, in front and back seats, on all company-operated cars.

AUTOBEATNIK POEM NO. 41INSECTS

In an article on computers inLIFE of March 3, 1961, it wasreported that, "In Glenda)e, Calif.a certain computer even thinks itis a Beatnik poet. Having beentaught a few rules of grammarand given a vocabulary of 500words of the type Beatnik poetsfrequently employ, this robot hasclanked out works such as the oneprinted above."

The LIFE article goes on tosay, "Some Auto-Beatnik 'poems'were read by a bearded scientistto unsuspecting denizens of a LosAngeles coffeehouse who 'becamequite stirred up with admiration.'One especially appealing linewhich the computer likes, is 'AH,I AM NOT A MACHINE.' TheBeatnik computer is not a stunt.Its masters are using it to studyhow to build better computers thatcan communicate in the Englishlanguage."

As many have guessed, that"certain computer . . . in Glen-dale . . . " is a Librascope com-puter (an LGP-30, as a matter offact) and "its masters" are mem-bers of Hal Hamilton's AdvancedResearch Department.

Although many of the "poems"are amusing isurne are also un-printable because the computer iscompletely uninhibited in its se-lection of words), the Auto-Beat-nik project is a serious undertak-ing, as the LIFE article suggests.To the Advanced Research group,this project is only the first of aseries of experiments which, it ishoped, will throw some light onthe important problems of man-machine communications and ma-chine linguistics.

In essence, the Auto-Beatnikpoetry writer is a program whichcontains a vocabulary of Englishwords arranged into several dozengrammatical and structural cate-gories, and groups of patterns ofthe various categories. A "poem"is generated by randomly choos-ing a series of patterns and thenrandomly choosing words from

the categories to fill out the pat-terns.

It was observed that one of theun i fv in i f threads that seems totie the lines of a real poem to-gether is the repetition of keywords, u sua l l y subject nouns,their pronouns, and action verbs.A stochastic selection routine isincorporated as part of the poetrywriter in an attempt to achieve asemblance of continuity in a ma-chine poem by biasing the choiceof certain key categories. The ran-dom selection of the other catego-ries were unbiased. Thus, a meas-ure of controlled "continuity" isachieved while maintaining thenovelty inherent in random selec-tion.

If a computer is presented withan English vocabulary arrangedinto the parts of speech and isa'so given rules for ordering thesewords, then the validity of therules can be tested by having thecomputer generate sentences.Anyone with a knowledge of Eng-lish can then easily detect inade-quacies in the structure of thegrammatical model in question.

The Auto-Beatnik poetry writ-er, was first conceived as a toolfor testing certain syntactical orgrammatical models of the Eng-lish language. We were trying toascertain the extent nn' l nat 'J1

the semantic content that mightbe inherent in any purely struc-tural grammatical model of a nat-ural language. By using a com-puter as our sentence generator,we were assured that the senten-ces generated would be the prod-uct of the model in question andthere could be no unconsciouscompensation (by the human ex-perimenter) for defects in thegrammar.

Since we were primarily inter-ested in syntax and grammar, inthis first experiment, the linesgenerated by the computer haveno significance or meaning. Thesegrammatically correct but se-mantical ly empty sentencesseemed to us to resemble lines ofmodern poetry — hence the nick-name, the Auto-Beatnik poetrywriter.

Ultimately, of course, we areinterested in the problems of se-mantics and of mechanizingmeaning. We humans would liketo be able to tell the computerwhat to do in our language rath-er than in special codes. Commu-nicating with a machine in a natu-ral language would not only beeasier for humans, but the natu-ral language would hopefully ex-tend the computer's problem solv-ing ability and flexibility. A com-puter that understands and re-sponds in English would enableanyone to use a computer to solvea wide range of problems withoutspecial training and without spell-ing out in advance every step thecomputer must take.

Aside from helping to amelio-rate the life of the computer pro-grammer (or possibly eliminatingthe need for him altogether),there is a more fundamental rea-son for investigating and mechan-izing language processes. It is thecontention of the Advanced Re-search group that one of the mostexciting, and ultimately one of themost rewarding, scientific fron-tiers which faces research work-ers today is the broad area vari-ously called "artificial intelli-gence," "automata studies," "cy-bernetics," "bionics," etc. And itis generally believed by those inthese research areas that there isan intimate and necessary rela-tionship between natural languageand human intelligence. Thus, itis easy to see that if one couldmechanize language processes,then we would be much closer tothe greater goal of the mechani-zation of creative thought proc-esses.

Profile: James H. Paquin

Because of its classified nature,the major portion of work per-formed by the Glendale branchhas received very little public no-tice. We know the work is goingon; but most of it is behind closeddoors. Names such as Polaris,ASROC and SUBROC crop up oc-casionally, but until a project be-comes declassified they are merely

vague references to the outsideobserver.

And because these projects areunder security wraps, the engi-neering and design teams work-ing on them often find themselvesbeyond the pale of public noticeand acclaim. With a wary eye ona tight time schedule, the workis accomplished and deadlines arequietly met. For all concerned,there is an abundance of anxietyand pressure in meeting the rigidrequirements of quality and time.

High on the list of pressure per-formers for the Glendale branchis Jim Paquin, Technical Directorfor the Glendale branch Engineer-ing Department.

A comparatively new face atLibrascope (April '59), Paquin(p ronounced P a y - K w i n ) hasplayed a major role in the suc-cessful development of both theASROC and SUBROC projects.When the occasion arises, he,like so many of his colleaguesat Glendale, has extended hiswork-day long into the eveningwhen due-dates or last-minute re-

visions have cropped up on thesetop-priority programs.

The long work day, however, isnothing new to Jim Paquin. Itdates back early in his first yearat Lafayette High School in hishome town of Red Lake Falls,Minnesota. Filled with a nativecuriosity to tinker and explore, hespent his after-school hours andweek-ends working at the localradio repair shop. It put a littlespending money in his pocket, butmore than that, it meant an earlyeducation in the field of electron-ics.

Following high-school gradua-tion in 1940, Paquin worked fora local radio repair shop, thenmoved to Chicago to enroll at theIllinois Institute of Technology.His studies, however, were inter-rupted by the outbreak of WorldWar II.

Enlisting in the Signal CorpsReserve, Paquin spent 14 monthson active duty, much of the timein military classes in electronics.While attending a school inOmaha, he met Roselle Cagle who,

shortly after, became Mrs. Paquin.Following discharge, Jim re-

turned to his studies, this timeback in his native state at theUniversity of Minnesota. Anhonor student, he received hisBSEE in Communications in 1947.

Paquin spent the followingthree years with electronic firmsin the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.It was also the period when thelong, harsh Minnesota winterscaught up with the Paquin clanthat now included three sons(Mark, Don and Bryan). "It wasthe winter of 1950, when we had40 straight days of snow, thatfinally sold us on the idea of mov-ing west," Paquin said. "Thedaily tunneling out of the house,plus a little rheumatism that be-gan to bother me, were the decid-ing factors," he added.

The exodus from the cold coun-try brought the Paquins to South-ern California and for Jim an as-signment with what was thenConsolidated Engineering in Pasa-dena. He was assigned to work onmass spectrometers and analog-digital converters.

Shortly after joining Consoli-

dated, a decision came down toadd a computer to the company'sline of products. A half-dozensenior engineers, including Pa-quin, were put to the chore. Threeyears later, the small group hadbecome its own division and, ashort time later, a new company—Electrodata Corp.

The talent and capabilities ofthe organization and its membersspread throughout the electronicsindustry, and in 1956 it was pur-chased by Burroughs Corp. Bythe time Paquin left in 1958,it had grown to more than 1000employees.

The following week, Paquinmoved on to Space TechnologyLaboratory where he served asa member of the technical staff,assigned to the development ofinstrumentation for space probes.This work was satisfactory butcommuting to and from Arcadiawas intolerable.

In April of 1959, followingTev-eral conversations with Libra-scope employee and friend DaveHartig, Paquin joined the com-pany as a staff engineer to LaneWolman in what was then Special

PRELIMINARY STUDIES onthe rotary method reveal that aproduction line of five of these sta-tions, costing approximately $650,could pay for itself in 2% averagedays, Johnson said.

One working model of the "lazy-susan" station has been installedand is in use at Bldg. A-19, Glen-dale Branch Processing, Wiringand Assembly.

In construction of the model, twobicycle wheels were mounted hori-zontally on an axle extending fromtop of the pedestal. Attached to therim of the shorter wheel were 13flexible circuit card holders. On therim of the larger wheel pre-formedcomponents were arranged in regu-lation small parts bins.

THE SHEET MUSIC rackmounted in the center of the wheelsserved to hold component mountinginstructions (Mi's).

Time savings with the rotary or"lazy-susan" method is based onmemory retention capabilities ofthe assemblers, Johnson explained.With the new method, assemblersmemorize Mi's for a group of threeor four components, and then goahead and mount this group on allthe boards on the wheel before re-ferring again to instructions.

In contrast, using the presentbench method, assemblers mountcomponents individually in a cer-tain order referring each time tothe MI until one board is completed.

BY THE TIME the assemblergets back to the first component ona new board, he has been througha whole range of components andvaried instructions. Rarely can heremember the individual mountingprocedures he learned on the previ-ous board, so he again must referto the MI for each component.

The Methods Improvement Group,during investigation of this assem-bly problem, eliminated other typesof "lazy-susan" stations installedon work benches in favor of thepedestal type.

6Repro' Unit ThrivesOn Paper Work

Publication of President W. E. Bratton's "An-nual Report to Employees" is a yearly project re-quiring the concerted effort of several sectionsand staffs. For the final important step — that ofprinting — Librascope turns to its General Repro-duction Services in Bldg. A-26.

Reproduction's job is to produce an exacting andattractive printed package — the final touch to thereport's many publication steps coordinated by theInternal Communications Section of EmployeeRelations.

Success of previous effort, such as the art work,page layouts and copy negative work by sectionsof the Glendale Publications Dept., hinges on aneffective printing job.

Under Supervisor F. J. McDonald, ReproductionServices gave the 1960 report a special treatmentthis year. A new offset printing machine wasadded to the shop's line of equipment just in timeto handle the report's press-run of over 4,000copies.

But Reproduction is one section that thrives on"paper-work." A part of W. R. Greer's DivisionOffice Services, its function includes printing andreprinting the myriad of office and business formsused in the daily operation of the company.

Last month's figures show this section turnedout over 450,000 reproductions varying from"while you were out" pads to printed vellums forbudgeting in sizes up to 11 by 17 inches.

McDonald's 11-man crew, which includes aswing shift, now has facilities and equipment forfour different reproduction processes - - offsetprinting, spirit duplication, verifax and blue-linereproduction.

The section keeps on permanent file several hun-dred master sheets for all types of office formswhich can be quickly reproduced upon request.

Average paper stock on hand offers over 60 dif-ferent weights and finishes for many differentprinting requirements.

Grease and Water Don't MixOffset Printing, more properly called "offset

lithography," is based on the fact that waterand grease do not mix. In the process, imagesto be printed are imposed photographically ona metal sheet or special paper. These imagesare represented as a hard grease, and when theentire sheet is thoroughly wetted, only thegrease images attract ink (which is also agrease). The image is first printed on a rubberroller and then transferred (or offset) ontopaper.

The Fosdick Model 54-P Jig Borer, the Glendale branch'ssecond numerically controlled machine tool, arrived early lastmonth, ready for work on both tooling and production items.The new machine is housed in Bldg A-01, in the same area asthe Burgmaster Turret Drill Press, Librascope's initial piece ofN.C. equipment.

THE VERSATILE, 28,000-poundFosdick machine was shipped fromCincinnati to Glendale on a specialtruck to safeguard against any ac-cident or mishap that might affectits guaranteed accuracy of toler-ances to within 1/10,000 of an inch.

The numerically controlled jigborer is operated by a one-inch,eight-channel tape which automati-cally positions the equipment onthree axes and selects any one of16 spindle speeds and any one ofeight feeds. And although the ma-chine is tape controlled, the opera-tor can dial additional informationinto the console or it can even beoperated manually.

The work load presently sched-uled for the Fosdick is both in tool-ing fabrication and production. Itis expected to substantially reducecosts and increase accuracies over

The 4000, which is marketed byRoyal McBee Corp., is being spon-sored at the fair by the MitsubishiElectric Manufacturing Companyof Japan.

The successor to Librascope'sLGP-30, the RPC-4000 is a com-pletely solid state system. Its basicunit is a desk-size digital computerwith an 8008-word memory ca-pacity.

Our sister division,Kearfott, has a similar Fosdickmachine, and is extremely pleasedwith its performance."

Programming and tape prepara-tion for the jig borer will behandled in Manufacturing Planningin much the same manner as thoseprepared for use on the numericallycontrolled Burgmaster, in opera-tion since last December.

Operators assigned to the newequipment are jig bore machinistsC. C. Pierson and W. C. Lewis.They recently completed an in-plant training program under thesupervision of Earl Ballard of Fos-dick Co., who was also in charge ofmachine installation.

Insurance Lends a Hand,Aids Injured Douke Youth

Today, Tom Douke is a 15-year-old sophomore in high school. In hisright hand he carries the strengthof a normal boy—he can move hisfingers so well that playing thesaxophone comes easy.

IT'S BEEN a long, rough roadto regain the use of that hand. Buta series of operations by specialiststo transplant and repair severedtendons and nerves have miracu-lously succeeded in undoing thedamage caused by the explosion ofa home-made rocket on Jan. 31,1960.

Of the tough pull back to recov-ery, Tom's father, Edward Douke(pronounced Doo-kee) said, "Atleast, we didn't have to worry aboutthe financial cost."

Douke's Group Insurance fromLibrascope paid over $1,700 in medi-cal expenses and hospitalization.

Recently promoted as LibrascopeArea Manager at the FAA Ex-perimental Center in Atlantic City,N.J., is Richard A. Jaeger, of theSunnyvale Branch Ground SystemsDepartment.

JAEGER, FORMERLY super-visor at the FAA facility, now di-rects the activity of all Librascopepersonnel who install and maintainvarious components of the Air Traf-fic Control Data Processor System.

He reports to M. G. Ettinghoff,Director of the Dept's ElectricalEquipment Section.

A Librascoper since August, 1959,Jaeger came to the company fromJet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasa-dena, where he was responsible forthe design and building of uniquetransistorized digital and analogdata acquisition devices for JPL'swind tunnel and rocket cell instru-mentation systems.

AT ONE TIME Jaeger was an in-structor in basic electronics forPhilco at the Army Guided MissileCenter, Fort Bliss, Texas. Earlier,while with Convair, he was a tele-metering instrumentation techni-cian working out of Edwards AFBon experimental flight programs ofthe F-102 and -106.

Born in Berlin, Jaeger grew upin the Quincy-Alton area of east-ern Illinois. He attended AntelopeJunior College in Lancaster andNaval schools in Gulfport, Miss.,and Chicago.

his year and a half at Librascope,mourned the passing last month ofRobert M. Wright, Sub-Contractsadministrator, Glendale MaterielDept. He died April 17, victim of agunshot wound, suffered whilecleaning a .38 caliber automaticpistol, part of his extensive weap-ons collection. Bob, who was 41, wasa native of Richmond, Va. Memorialservices were held April 22. He issurvived by his widow, Mrs. LillianWright.

Jack R. EvansJack R. Evans, a Librascoper

since Sept 1953, died at his homein North Hollywood April 16, afteran illness of four months. Cause ofdeath was heart disease. Well-known and well-liked throughoutthe organization, Jack was a partsinspector in Quality Control formost of his years with the com-pany. Burial services were held inKingston, Pa., Evans' former home.Fellow employees, through the Pre-cisioneers, sent a floral tribute.

Machine Shop, told the LIBRA-ZETTE. "If it hadn't been for theinsurance, I could see a loanagainst my property and I'd stillbe paying."

Douke vividly recalls that Sun-day afternoon in 1960. He waswatching television when he heardthe blast in the basement of thefamily's Highland Park home.

Tom and two friends had beenworking feverishly on their home-made rocket. Tom's job was to loadthe booster. With a hammer andnail, he tamped sulphur from matchtips into a large CO-2 cartridge.

WHEN THE CARTRIDGE ex-ploded, the palm of Tom's handtook the full force of the blast.

The doctor worked on Tom oversix hours that day. But shortenedtendons and severed nerves left theboy with little use and feeling inhis hand.

Eight months and many therapytreatments later, specialists wereable to perform another operationtransplanting tendons and nervesfrom other parts of his arm, andTom was on the way to recovery.

"HE NOW CARRIES with him asmall sponge-rubber ball to exer-cise his fingers," Douke said, "and,remarkable as it seems, I think hehas more strength in that handthan ever before."

After several months on theFAA project, Paquin transferredtemporarily to the Glendale branchto lend assistance to the ASROCprogram, which had run into somedifficulty. Eight months and manj60-hour work weeks later, theASROC team had successfulljphased-out the program. By April1960, the Librascope system wasin-fleet and operational.

Following a brief return to Spe-cial Devices, Paquin was recallecto the Glendale branch for worton its top-priority SUBROC pro-gram. Again pressed by deadlinesPaquin and the rest of the Glen-dale team performed yeoman dutjin successfully hurdling many olthe program's obstacles.

Now a permanent addition tcthe Glendale staff, Technical Di-rector Paquin is helping to guidethe SUBROC program through itsfinal stages.

Machines Improved:

Toolmaker Solves Eyeletting ProblemTiny metal eyelets, about the

size of a husky ant, have long beenproblem children for Glendale cir-cuit board production.

The tiny eyelets, which serve asrims in cricuit board holes, had alengthy record for jamming eyelet-ting machines used in the Process-ing, Wiring and Assembly opera-tion.

But no more. Continual improve-ments in the machines by ToolMaker Walter Marcy, of the Glen-dale Tool Room, has eliminated thecause of much of the delinquency.

TWO MACHINES in the eyelet-ting section of Bids'. A-18 havebeen equipped with Marcy's latestinnovations, and the changes haveproven successful. Others will soonbe similarly modified.

The eyelet's history of troublestemmed from the time they wereplaced in the hopper at the top ofthe eyeletting machine.

Here the eyelets, several thou-sand strong, were juggled about thehopper by revolving brush sweep-ers until they landed upright ontheir flanges and fell, one by one,through a hole leading to the ma-chine's raceway. By gravity theywere fed down the raceway into thestamping or inserting part of themachine.

WORKING ON the law of prob-ability, the theory of the machinedesign was that of all these littleeyelets dancing around in the hop-per, one was bound to light theright way and slip through the holeoften enough to keep the machinerunning.

But some days the law justcouldn't seem to keep up.

The eyelets would either jam the

hole or fail to come out fast enough.The problem was somewhat un-

derstandable, however, since thehole demanded that the eyelet comeout sitting upright on its flange, aposition of rather precarious bal-ance.

TOOL MAKER MARCY theo-rized that if the eyelet was having

ready for stamping. This processworked!

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS byMarcy for the eyeletting machinesinclude brass raceways for fasterand smoother travel by the eyeletson their journey from the hopper.Raceways were also modified to in-clude adjustable tracks for eyeletsof many sizes.

The tool maker is now workingon a variation for the brushing ap-paratus inside the hopper which willfurther decrease possibilities of anerrant eyelet fouling the machines.

trouble balancing on its flange, hewould cut a groove in the bottomof the hopper to catch the eyeletsin the opposite position (flangesup). The groove would then serveto guide them in a steady flow tothe raceway.

This created another problem.The eyelets in the groove were inthe wrong position to go into thestamping part of the machine.

So Marcy's next step was to puta half-twist in the raceway to allowthe eyelet to invert its position onthe way from the hopper and be

A 14-week course in "Manage-ment Leadership" is now underwayat Librascope for some 34 super-visors and managers representingall Branches of the company.

The course, presented Tuesdayevenings after work, features eightlecture sessions by Max B. Skousen,founder of the Skousen tax servicefirm, and one of the leading special-ists in the field of management de-velopment.

Other sessions are being con-ducted by members of the Trainingstaff.

Purpose of the course, said W.P. Strong, Training Director, is toprovide "practical examples and ap-plications on how the manager canget his job done effectively andeconomically."

The course covers a wide area ofmanagement problems such as dele-gation of responsibility, motivation,communications, and cost control.

Sessions are scheduled to be com-pleted late in June.

In addition, the low-cost con-verter can be modified to performas a digital servo, converting non-linear data into digital form, and toperform digital-to-voltage conver-sion functions.

DEVELOPED BY the Burbankbranch for the Laboratory forElectronics, Boston, the design ofthe new converter stresses minia-turization of component parts andpackaging. As a result, the Model791-S converter weighs only 18ounces, is 7 inches long, 1% inchesdeep, and 17s inches wide.

Gustavson Joins10-Year Rank,Retires in June

A six-month visit in his nativecountry of Sweden will introduceSven Gustavson to a life of leisure-living when he retires from Libra-scope June 1.

Gustavson, a recent 10-year Li-bravet, is a machine engine latheleadman in the Glendale BranchMachine Shop. He joined the com-pany in April, 1951, and has beena leadman for the past nine years.

He and his wife plan to leaveCalifornia June 8 and fly to Swedento visit Sven's brother and sisterwho live near Kristianstad. Enroutethey will stop off to visit friendsin Chicago.

It was in the Windy City thatGustavson settled after coming tothe United States at the age of 16.There he met and married his wife,Gunhild. The couple moved to Cali-fornia when he started at Libra-scope and now make their home inNorth Hollywood.

When they return from Sweden,the Gustavsons are planning a quietlife of leisure, if, as Sven says, "wecan take it."

prevent many injuries and mini-mize others when your car is in anaccident, Safety Coordinator W. E.Hamrick told LIBRAZETTE thismonth, but the driver in search ofprotection should be careful of whathe buys.

"YOU NEED a belt capable ofholding you in place when your cartries to turn you into a bullet topierce the windshield," Hamricksaid. "Your belt should withstanda pull of 5,000 pounds, becausethat's the forward thrust exertedon a driver when his car hits asolid object while traveling at thelow speed of 21 miles an hour. Mostinjury-causing accidents occur be-tween 20-25 miles an hour, inci-dentally."

The ideal belt has a metal-to-metal buckle, is easy to slip on andoff — to encourage use — is madeof nylon with nylon stitching, andis anchored through the floor, not tothe seat. It should be rated at notless than 5,000 pounds. Belts madeto the specifications of the Califor-nia Highway Patrol and the Gen-eral Services Administration of theFederal government, meet thesestandards, Hamrick said.
