It seems poll after poll about American’s views on LGBT people have shifted dramatically in favor of equality in recent years. But there is a group that hasn’t seemed to get the memo: Republicans in the House of Representatives.

Moving into the overcrowded sub-urban high school I called home for freshman year was an unusual ex-perience; partly because I had just left an environmental charter school with a graduating class of thirty-two where I had come to expect both

fresh air and a sense of community in my academic life,

but mainly because I knew, as a queer transkid, I was

walking into a metaphorical lion’s den. I had attempted

to skip the whole experience by applying to various

arts’ boarding schools with the hopes of my portfolio

earning me a scholarship, but the spotty grades of a

gifted LD student didn’t skew the odds in my favour; I

would just have to make the most of it.

! I’m hesitant to say that my experience that year

would have been drastically different if I had gone

through it as a hetero normative fourteen year old boy,

I met quite a few good friends, earned some respect-

able grades, and had more admirers than most: what

high school is all about. That being said; the year was

!"#$%&''$"% $()*'&+,#-.$,#$/(+$0-$1&+#$+,2!,13(!#$-'(&$"% $my gender transition, which is pretty much impossible

to cover up.

By the end of the school year, people where

starting to read me as a girl, and it didn’t go unnoticed.

I have pretty tough skin, but eventually I felt it nec-

me, but I came to realize that I had judged too quickly

and gradually built a sizable network of queer and allied

friends. Things started to change after that; my grand-

father died from aggressive lung cancer, my mother

went through a divorce, and my father disowned my

sister and I. My family came to the consensus that the

best choice was to skip town and combine households

with my grandmother who lived in Lake Bluff. I was

going to be the new kid all over again.

From everything I had heard, Lake Forest’s

school was a pretty good place, besides from the issues

you would imagine belonging to a school situated in

a community that is consistently rated as one of the

wealthiest towns in the country. I was greeted by the

school’s new student committee and met some other

transfer students, and I really wasn’t concerned about

making friends. While I may not have been concerned

with transfer, the faculty saw me coming from a mile

away, something my Mom and I realized when we

went to tailor my schedule only to be greeted by every

administrator I can think of off the top of my head

asked weird question, and even though I’m hardly ever

attracted to them, all of the of guys began to avoid

me like the plague. Everyone was more conservative

in my new community, not politically, but in how they

presented themselves and interacted; you didn’t share

your personal life, and I was forced to wear mine on

my sleeves. There are LGBT students in my school,

people know it, and they treats us with respect, but the

concept of being out means something entirely differ-

ent here. Being a visible LGBT kid in any community

has a string attached to it, you have to display a level

when they think of the gay community.

I am currently a rising junior looking forwards

to school in the fall ; seeing all the friends I have made

and hope to meet, the seven-to-seven days stuffed with

extracurricular, taking too many science classes, and

returning to the leadership committee of the wildly

successful GSA I helped to found. I can’t say that more

issues won’t arise, but I can guarantee that it will be

more that worth it and that everyone will know my

name.

A few years ago I was having a conversation with one

of my makeup artist friends about smoky eyes. The

trick to a smoky eye is to give yourself a subtle, smoul-

dering look. If you apply a bunch of dark shadow all

over your eyes, you take a smoky look and turn your-

5. Black eyeliner

6. Black non-waterproof mascara

7. Eye shadow primer

Step 1: Apply eye shadow primer to both eyelids, and

let sit for about 30 seconds.

Step 2: Take your eyeliner and line about ¾ of your

bottom lash line.

Step 3: With your eye shadow brush you will want to

apply your lightest color eye shadow on your entire

eyelid, all the way up to your brow.

Step 4: Take your medium color, taupe, and apply that

with the same brush only on the outer half of your

eyelid and slightly into the inner part of your eye lid,

but do not go all the way to your inner corner.

Step 5: Take your smoky eye brush and dip it lightly

into the ivory, and apply that to the inner corner of

your eye, this will give you the illusion of a “wide eye”

look. Then use that brush to line the top-inner part of

your eye, and the bottom-inner part of your eye, mak-

ing sure to overlap your black eye liner just slightly so it

looks as though it is fading from light to dark.

Step 6: Using the same smoky eye brush, apply a very

small amount of taupe on top of your black eyeliner

using left and right sweeping motions, and then pull it

slightly down and out on the bottom, and up and out

on the top. This will also help with the smouldering

look that you want to create.

Step 7: Once again, using the smoky eye brush, you

will want to dip it in your black eye shadow and start-

ing, in the middle of your eye, run it along your upper

lash line, coming to a slight point at the end of your

outer corner. Then you will want to do the same thing,

starting in the middle of your eye, run the brush along

the crease of your eye and touch it to the point you

created on the bottom, creating a sideways V. This is
